Harlon Hill Award
Quarterback Curt Anes Wins Harlon Hill Award
Grand Valley State University quarterback Curt Anes claimed
the Harlon Hill Trophy as the Division II College Football
Player of the year, with the second highest vote total in the
award’s 17-year history.
Anes recieved 271 total points in the voting and 63 first-place
votes, the second highest in points as well as second highest
total for first-place votes. Anes became the first-ever Harlon
Hill Award winner from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.
The award winner is determined in voting by the Division II
sports information directors and was presented in front of a
crowd of almost 500 at the seventeenth annual Harlon Hill
Trophy award banquet at the Florence Conference Center.
Anes, a senior from Kentwood, Michigan, was the runner-up
for last year’s Hill Trophy, finishing just eight points behind
2001 winner Dusty Bonner. In 2002 he quarterbacked Grand
Valley State to an undefeated regular-season and No. 1 ranking
all season, while ranking third nationally in passing efficiency
and third in total offense. He ranks third in Division II history
for career touchdown passes (114) and first in total offense
(11,881) and is fifth all-time in career pass efficiency. He threw
for 3,692 yards and 47 TDs in 2002 and led the Lakers to a 14-
0 record and to the Division II National Championship.
“Being a part of the Harlon Hill Trophy Award was an incredible
experience,” said Anes. “It is such an honor to be mentioned
in the same sentence as all of the previous winners,” added
Anes.
Anes became one of five individuals to win the Harlon Hill
Award on Friday night and then lead his team to the NCAA DII
National Championship on Saturday.
“This is not an individual award. I was blessed with incredible
team, coaches and support staff that all played a key role in
helping achieve this honor,” stated Anes.
C.W. Post senior running back Ian Smart was second with
180 points and 31 first-place votes, and St. Cloud State junior
quarterback Keith Heckendorf was third with 93 points and 7
first-place votes.
