The Harlon Hill Trophy annually goes to the top football player
in Division II, recognizing that individual as the NCAA Division II
Player of the Year. Five Laker football players have been nominated
a total of eight times for the Harlon Hill Award. Cullen Finnerty was
one of three finalists in 2006, while Michael Tennessee was nominated
in 2003. Curt Anes (2001-02), Jeff Fox (1997-98) and Eric
Lynch (1990-91) earned multiple nominations for the award. These
five former Laker gridiron greats have earned the right to be mentioned
among the top players in Division II football. Finnerty
became the second Laker quarterback to finish runner-up for the
award this decade (Anes 2001). Tennessee was one of six nominees
from the Northeast region to move on to the 24-member national
ballot. Prior to 2002 when Anes won the Harlon Hill Award, his runner-up
finish in 2001 was the Lakers’ highest finisher in the Hill
Award voting. Anes garnered the most first-place votes (52), but finished
eight points (201) behind Dusty Bonner’s total of 209. Laker
quarterback Jeff Fox finished third in the Harlon Hill Award voting
in 1998 with 76 points and two first-place votes. Former Laker running
back Eric Lynch finished tied for sixth in 1989 and eighth in
1990.
QB Jeff Fox finished third in the
1998 Harlon Hill voting. Fox
completed 236-of-394 passes for
3,260 yards and 30 TDs. He led
GVSU to the 1998 MIFC
Championship and a spot in the
NCAA Division II Playoffs. Fox
was a nominee in 1997 when he
passed for 2,422 yards and 18
TDs, while rushing for 482.
