2002 National Champions • 2003 National Champions • 2005 National Champions • 2006 National Champions 122 Quarterback U At the end of the 2006 season, Cullen Finnerty ended his college football career with the Lakers. In four seasons as the starter for Grand Valley, Finnerty became the winningest starting QB in NCAA history with a 51-4 record. Finnerty also led the Lakers to a 14-1 record in the playoffs with three championships. Curt Anes finished at the top with the Lakers, leading GVSU to its first ever national championship during his senior year in 2002. Anes held the school record for most passing yards in a career (10,581) when he completed his four year career. Curt Anes would also go down in history as the 2002 winner of the Harlon Hill Award, he is the only Laker to win the honor. Before Cullen Finnerty and Curt Anes, Holland native Jeff Fox was setting records and laying the foundation for future Laker signal-callers. Fox became the first Grand Valley QB to throw for over 2,000 yards in multiple seasons. each of Fox’s three seasons at the helm of the offense still rank in the top 10 for passing in Laker annals. Kwame McKinnon, Jack Hull, Guy Schuler, Jim Lynch, and David Quinley are just a few more athletes who have stood tall as the field general for the Lakers in past seasons.
Of the four Lakers who have competed for Division II’s top award, three of those have been quarterbacks. Cullen Finnerty was the most recent player to be named a finalist for the award when he finished second in 2006. Finnerty received more votes for the honor than any other QB in 2006. Curt Anes took the Harlon Hill trophy home, along with a national championship trophy in 2002. In 2001, Anes finished second behind Dusty Bonner, even though Anes collected more first place votes. Jeff Fox earned himself a third place finish on the ballot in 1998 after a stellar season where he threw for 3, 260 yards and 30 touchdowns.
