The Lakers went wire to wire as the #1 team in the<br />

country. Grand Valley got <strong>of</strong>f to a bit <strong>of</strong> a rough start<br />

early in the season, but was able to peak at the right<br />

time despite suffering key injuries on the <strong>of</strong>fensive line<br />

and defense.<br />

GVSU moved through the play<strong>of</strong>fs without too much<br />

<strong>of</strong> a scare, defeating South Dakota, North Dakota, and<br />

Delta State by an average score <strong>of</strong> more than two<br />

touchdowns.<br />

In the championship game, Grand Valley defeated a<br />

determined NW Missouri State for the second year in a<br />

row, 17-14. Cullen Finnerty was responsible for both<br />

Laker touchdowns, while Billy “Pix” Brechin intercepted<br />

two passes and recovered a fumble to clinch<br />

the win.<br />
