president’s message
On a lighter nOte, a big
congratulation goes to our
new judge Dorie Vlatten-
Schmitz who passed her German
Judges Training Course. This was
the remaining requirement left for
her to become a fully-fledged AHS
judge after having been a learner
judge. Dr. Ludwig Christmann told
us, “As expected, she did a good job
and I will propose to our board to
accept her as a Hanoverian breeding
judge; you can expect to use her as a
full judge this summer.” The same
can be said about Ursula Hosking,
a candidate from Ontario, Canada.
Congratulations! We look forward
to having Dorie judging for the AHS.
The inspection tour is now in full
swing. Few people know how much
time and thought was spent on making
changes and improvements for this
year’s inspection tour. Many thanks
go out to the members of the Inspection
Review Committee and our office for
working together on this daunting
task. The goal was to improve the
overall tour experience and safety
for our members and participants as
well as to protect our society and
hosts in case of a mishap. The committee
suggested some great ideas
and worked with our office, insurance
companies and attorney on ways to
implement them. Committee members
4 T HE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN
Dear AHS Members:
On June 19 we lost our dear friend and fellow horseman Fritz Floto at the age of 88.
Fritz was a Hanoverian pioneer in North America, a long-standing member of the AHS
Mare and Stallion Committee as well as an honorary AHS member. Fritz would speak
his mind and had great knowledge to impart with a good sense of humor. He will be
missed by many. You can read more about Fritz and his wonderful lifelong contribution
to Hanoverian horses and breeders on page 9 of this issue.
Above: Fritz Floto
hours mulling things over until they
were workable improvements. This
year’s tour took a considerable amount
of planning after the Review Committee
examined every step the office takes
each year to organize this most
important event. It also involved
scheduling time for the new Futurity
offered at every site, a bit of an
unknown because this is the inaugural
year. A questionnaire indicated at
which sites more or less participation
can be expected. Emphasis was put
on planning sufficient travel time for
the judges so they get to the sites
rested as well as allowing adequate
time at the sites for judges to answer
questions from participants and
spectators. The inspections are the
only face to face contact we have with
most of our members so it is important
we schedule to spend quality time rather
than rushing through a list of horses.
We finally closed the hole on insurance
coverage (or lack thereof) as we now
require each site’s insurance company
to name the AHS as an additional
insured on their liability policy. I
think former AHS President Doug
Leatherdale, also the former CEO of
one of the largest insurance companies,
will be happy to hear this has finally
been acted on as he has told the board
numerous times how lucky we have
been to not run into trouble. New
liability waivers were designed and
approved by our insurance company
and attorney. A system with wristbands
will be used to identify all who
sign the waiver. New forms were
devised to report needed improvements
and/or injuries.
A secretary will be at each site to
assist participants and to help the
judges ensure that the paperwork is
done properly so the inspection can
continue smoothly without a delay.
Scoring and reporting systems used
by the judges have been redesigned
and appear in a new format. We also
recognize that even though verbal
comments are always given, many
owners and handlers are so involved
showing and catching their foals that
it is often hard to hear or remember
them. Foal owners and handlers will

eceive written comments handed
to them after their presentation this
year along with the traditional spoken
comments.
In June, Mare and Stallion Committee
Chair Suzanne Quarles informed the
judges of all the changes during a
webinar organized for the Mare and
Stallion Committee with the help of
Natalie and Annetta. Another webinar
has been designed to inform the inspection
site hosts, and will be held in small
groups of hosts before their respective
tour dates. None of this would be possible
without the computer expertise
of Annetta Coleman who is helping
us utilize our digital cyber options,
thanks Annetta!
As part of the Inspection Review
Committee’s evaluation, Annetta Coleman
visited the AHS office to literally see
and understand all the steps the office
takes to organize the tour. Part of her
mission was to better understand the
computer system they work with. Our
computer system does the job it was
designed for very well; printing papers,
but that is about it. It is a 15-year-old
system and it has been hard to retrieve
any specific data out of our database.
When our Information Technology
consultant, Tim Forshee, resigned last
month Hugh had the USEF computer
department, our neighbors in the park,
come in and give us a quote to “redo”
and maintain our system. With the
help of Annetta we came to an agreement
that was both unique and competitive.
It was approved by the AHS board. The
unique part is that the USEF computer
department is equine-related and that
they have already set-up several registries
with an “alike” system that works
very well with little or no maintenance
needed once up and running. The office
will be able to make its own queries,
which will save a lot of programming
expenses when data is needed for new
projects. Now we will be able to find
out which of your horses did what and
when, with the touch of a button.
Participate in the $3,000 AHS Futurity
at your local site on this year’s tour!
Have a great inspection! n
Sincerely,
Edgar Schutte
Registration. We’d like to acknowledge and thank committee members Rick
Regalo and Sanceo Top Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Western Selection Trials
the future Of dressage in the
U.S. was on display this weekend
as horses and riders contested
the 2012 Markel/USEF Young
Horse Dressage Western Selection
Trials in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.
Held in conjunction with the Dressage
at Flintridge CDI*Y/J, these combinations
were vying for a spot on the
USEF Young Horse Dressage Short
List and attempting to qualify for the
FEI World Breeding Championships
that will be held in Verden, Germany
later this year. Regalo, the winner of
the five-year-old division and Sanceo,
the six-year-old division winner, both
qualified for the short list after producing
scores above the required 7.8.
Caliente DG, who finished second
place in the five-year-old division, also
earned a spot on the USEF Young
Horse Short List.
“We just finished the Markel/USEF
Young Horse Dressage Western
Selection Trial at Flintridge Riding
Club. The number of entries was down
this year, however the quality was
excellent.” Reflected USEF Young Horse
Dressage Coach Scott Hassler, “All the
combinations showed very well and
finished with high scores which were
deserved through good performances.”
In the five-year-old division Lientje
Schueller rode Pinky Roberts’ Regalo
to a decisive victory and earned a spot
on the USEF Young Horse Dressage
Short List. The Oldenburg gelding
produced an overall score of 8.1 after
earning an 8.1 in the Preliminary Test
which counted for 40 percent of the
total and an 8.2 in Saturday’s Final
Test which counted for the remaining
60 percent. Regalo (Rosario-Dandiell/
Nandino) now stands on the top of
the 2012 Markel/USEF Five-Year-
Old Ranking.
6 T HE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN
The Hanoverian Sanceo (San Remo-SPS Rivera/Ramiro’s Son II), owned by Alice Womble and ridden
by Sabine Schut-Kery, was named the winner of the Six-Year-Old division at the 2012 Markel/USEF
Young Horse Dressage Western Selection Trials.
Finishing in second place in the fiveyear-old
division was Caliente DG
(OO Seven-Satina/Contango) ridden
by Craig Stanley. Brenda Linman’s
Dutch Warmblood mare finished with
an overall score of 7.9 after earning
an 8.4 in the Preliminary Test and a
7.7 in the Final. Caliente DG has also
earned a spot on the short list.
Alice Womble’s Sanceo (San Remo-
SPS Rivera/Ramiro’s Son II) was the
lone entry in the six-year-old division
but made the trip to Flintridge worth
it by earning a place on the USEF
Young Horse Dressage Short List.
While doing so, Sanceo scored high
enough to earn a spot representing the
U.S. at the FEI World Breeding
Championships for Young Horses in
Dressage. Those championships will be
held August 5-11 in Verden, Germany.
Sanceo, ridden by Sabine Schut-Kery,
scored an 8.7 in the Preliminary Test
and an 8.6 in the Final Test earning
an overall score of 8.6.
Hassler was very impressed with the
stallion and the way he has come
along over the years.
“Sabine presented Sanceo beautifully
both days. He has matured a great
deal since last year and would hold
his own over in Europe. It has been
fun to see this combination develop
over the last few years.”
The Breeders Challenge Sweepstakes
is a new breeders’ contest open to
beginning with foals born in 2011.
Through this program Hassler Dressage
and award breeders with prizes and
All entrants were scored blindly – no
pedigree, owner information, gender
the judges. Only a video and photographs
submitted by the foal’s owners
Foals were judged on five categories:
walk, trot, canter, conformation and
respected breeding expert Jacques
Championship for Young Horses
8 T HE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN
breeder and top stallion producer
submitted their scores independently.
Once all scores were tallied,
Hassler Dressage kept the results
quiet until they made an announcement
at Dressage at Devon.
Wendy and Marty were awarded
$5,000 as well as a $100 breeding
credit for any stallion in the Hassler
Dressage program. The couple was
also invited to Riveredge for a celebration
Fritz Floto
(1924-2012)
At the age of 88 years Fritz Floto passed
away on June 19, 2012 at his farm near
Fergus, Ontario. “The word Hanoverian and
the name Fritz Floto are synonymous in
North America,” well described this old
school horseman in the Canadian magazine
Horse Sport in September, 1992. Fritz Floto
was the pioneer of Hanoverian breeding in
Canada and had much influence on the
development of the Hanoverian breed in
the U.S. For his merits he was awarded the
Golden Badge of Honour of the Hannoveraner
Verband in 1980. The Chamber of Agriculture
Hannover awarded him with a Golden Medal
in recognition of his achievements in building
up and promoting the Hanoverian breed
in North America, and from the German
Equestrian Federation he received the Gustav
Rau Plaque. Mr. Floto was also a lifetime
member of the Hanoverian Breeders’ Club
of Eastern Canada.
“The word Hanoverian and the
name Fritz Floto are synonymous
in North America.”
—Horse Sport magazine
Fritz Floto was born at Gut Gaedebehn in
Mecklenburg in 1924, the son of a family
with a long tradition in horse breeding. He
IN PASSING
experienced the horrors of World War II
in a cavalry regiment and with the artillery
in Russia, where he was wounded several
times. In 1952 Fritz Floto emigrated to Canada.
He and his wife Erica settled down in the
Guelph area in Ontario and started a dairy
farm. The couple had two sons. He sold his
cattle in 1968 and accepted employment
at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph.
In 1961 he bought two mares, Windrose,
by Weiler, and Fernanda, by Fernjaeger, as
well as the stallion Weimar, by Firnis, all
of which had been imported to Calgary a
short time before. With these horses he
laid the foundation of Hanoverian breeding
in Canada. In close cooperation with the
German Hannoveraner Verband and the
Lower Saxony state stud at Celle he imported
further stallions in the following years
such as Denar by Duft, Waidmann by
Waidmannsdank xx, Ansturm by Adlerfarn II,
Equuleus by Eindruck II, Sandsturm by
Sendbote, Lepanto by Leibwächer, and
lastly Welfenschatz by Walhall.
As a judge and its branding representative
Fritz Floto was for many decades a pillar
for the Hannoveraner Verband in Eastern
Canada. He was an honorary member of
the American Hanoverian Society and a long
standing member of the AHS Mare and
Stallion Committee. The Hannoveraner
Verband in Germany and Hanoverian breeders
all over North America mourn the passing
of a great horseman who was always
open to discuss the issues with breeding
and raising Hanoverians.
The 23-year-old was very pleased with his horse’s performance
but believes that Lombardo has yet to show his best.
“There’s just small mistakes that need cleaning up, so
how solid he’s been and at this competition. He’s been so
steady for both tests,” Said Hafner. “I’m fortunate to have
Gold dominated the breeding industry, winning numerous
awards for his progeny’s success in the show ring.
“He was a real gentleman’s gentleman,” Steffee explained.
“Goldie knew his job very very well. He was just delightful
and we miss him so much. He was the whole spirit of this
farm. All the mares that were here were his girls, and all the
babies were his. He was the king. He handled his responsibilities
in such a wonderful way, and brought joy into so
many hearts.”
After two decades of showing and siring, All the Gold has
etched his name in history, and his legacy is one that will
never be forgotten. His incredible achievements have left
footprints in the equestrian world, from influencing the
acceptance of Warmbloods in the hunter ring, to reshaping
the breeding industry. His descendants continue his legacy,
and his name will forever be remembered in the National
Show Hunter Hall of Fame.
“All the Gold was an incredible horse, and not only did he
excel as a top show horse, but also as a breeder stallion. There
were so many influential people involved in his career, and
Billie had an incredible way with of all of it,” Susie Schoellkopf
explained. “I was so honored and touched to have been the
one to induct All the Gold, he was a true character, and he is
a horse that truly deserves the honor.”
“There has never been and may never again be a more talented
and beloved hunter stallion than All The Gold,” DeVita said.
“He was for so many years and for many different riders a
consistent winner and competitor. He was a very special and
interesting horse to train, so very smart and clever, one who
rarely ever touched the depths of his talents and abilities. To
me the driving force and real hero of Goldie’s fabulous
career is his owner Billie Steffee. She believed in his abilities
and his future from the beginning, as a show horse and a
breeding stallion. Goldie will always be in our hearts and
remembered as the true Champion he was, and sire of so
many incredibly talented show horses!”
Steffee concluded, “I will never hope to have another one like
him. Nobody could replace him.”
fires blazing aCrOss the COlOradO
Hundreds of horses have already
a 2002 Hanoverian stallion bred by Marefield Meadows.
when earl’s restaurant’s
founder Bus Fuller was
faced with the dilemma of
re-homing his anti-social cockatoo
Lilly, he had no idea he would be
replacing her with a 1,200 pound
creature that would steal his heart –
and line his office shelves with
trophy after trophy! His architects,
Pemberton, Canada locals Grace and
Ernie Collins, suggested he meet their
neighbors Jill Giese and John Dingle
who provided new homes for animals
that didn’t quite fit their original
ones. Delivering the problematic Lilly
to her new digs at Dreamcatcher
Meadows, breeding and training center
of talented sport horses, Bus and
Rikki Fuller were moved by the site
of the “Girls Club,” a field of rescued
mares enjoying a second chance at
life, becoming the surrogate mothers
for the embryos transferred from
Dreamcatchers’ top competition mares.
Offering a donation to help with the
large cost of looking after these discarded
animals, Jill suggested they
buy a foal and then have something
of interest to show for their generosity.
Bus was initially disappointed when
he learned his pick of the 2008 born
foals was not for sale. He just trusted
John and Jill’s guidance that the
gangly dark brown filly standing
aloof from her stablemates was the
“pick of the litter.”
Dressage has been described as an
art form combining two souls – one
equine and one human; a true form
of live artistry and love. With the
support of Bus, the team of coach
Jill, rider John and diva Ballerina
DMV tirelessly worked towards
perfecting their art. Three years later
Bus found himself on a stage in San
Diego receiving a Horse of the Year
award presented by the United States
Dressage Foundation for the accomplishments
of his young mare, Ballerina
DMV. The gawky filly had blossomed
Ballerina DMV
into a regal athlete, receiving scores
throughout her first year of dressage
competition that most in the sport
only dream of.
It was with a huge sigh of relief,
and much celebration, that the
Dreamcatcher Meadows team celebrated
Ballerina DMV’s 2012 competition
debut. At the Beaujolais
Classic Dressage Festival June 16-18
her accomplishments were simply
astounding! On Friday, sport horses
of all ages and breeds were presented
in-hand (without a rider) as they were
put through their paces before internationally
acclaimed judges. After
winning her age group, she was
declared Mare Champion of the show,
followed by the Champion of her
breed, Hanoverian. Her younger threeyear-old
stablemate Lady of the
Dance DMV and two-year-old stallion
Lordsley DMV also enjoyed victories,
but Ballerina DMV earned the top two
scores of over 200 show participants!
Competitors are thrilled to achieve
scores in the 70 percentiles. Throughout
the show, John and Ballerina DMV
posted scores ranging from 83.5% to
an unbelievable 88.5%! The final and
most prestigious of the class competitions,
the Markel United States
Equestrian Federation class, was held
and showers. Each of the four- to six-
year-olds in the class had exhibited
talent in the past, earning an invitation
By scoring at least 7.2 (72%) in two
qualifiers, a participant qualifies to
held in Wayne, Illinois in August.
Each horse completed the mandatory
movements set out in a five-minute
pattern specified for the relevant age.
This class is unusual in that the judges
address the audience, publicly critiquing
each performance, announcing
the three-day show. It was delightful
to hear clear affirmation from the
audience when she was announced
class winner with a whopping 8.65!
With 9’s awarded for walk, canter and
With a total of seven wins in her
final victory literally ranked his girl
anxiously as the season progresses,
looking forward to personally attending
But for now, he’s just thrilled that
Lilly found a happy second home
and he’s discovered a new girl in his
“I can’t say I fully understand yet the
magnitude of this accomplishment
as I am new to being a horse owner
and to this sport, but it sure is exciting
to have this new adventure at this
Legacy, I could not help but fall in
horse I have ever met, he was beautiful
and he was incredibly tolerant of
my less than stellar riding skills. So,
just as he turned six, he came home
with me. Unfortunately, soon after I
brought him home, he had a series
of injuries that all together meant
that we were never able to have him
Luckily for me, I had a patient trainer,
Barbara Strawson, her able barn
and the help of Tony Eiler, our local
‘horse whisperer’ who was willing
to get on his back and get him going
after a five-month stint in the stall.”
with a 73.243%. He also placed
second in First Level, Test 2 with
73.243% and was third in two First
Level, Test 3 classes with 69.839%
and 68.871%.
Waterloo was imported from Germany
in 2007 as a five-year-old. Adrian
has had the 16.3-hand, black gelding
for a little over three years and has done
most of the training himself, but
once you hear his story you may be
surprised they made it this far at all.
Adrian relates, “Waterloo has a very
colorful past. I got him from Danielle
Fleegle who is a good friend and
owner of Morgan Run Stables in
Westminster, Md. She bought him
from a trainer who was boarding with
her at the time [2008]. This trainer 4
S UMMER 2012 17

was going to have him euthanized after
he bucked her off one Sunday morning.
Dani stepped in and purchased Waterloo
for a dollar. That’s when I first met
Waterloo because I start youngsters
and work with problem horses. To
make a long story short, he was in a lot
of pain and bucked everyone off that
ever tried to work with him, including
me! [That episode, in March 2009, sent
Adrian to University of Maryland Shock
Trauma.] So, Waterloo bounced around
from barn to barn and was even sent
back to Germany to be sold with no
takers. I worked with him for about a
month and was planning on going to a
schooling show until he sustained a
massive wire cut to his right hindleg
that required nine months and many
thousands of dollars to rehabilitate
him. Some at the farm tried to persuade
Dani to put him down once again, but
she saw something in him and if there
was a chance of saving him, she was
going to do all she could. After that, I
lost track of him for almost a year until
I got a call asking if I wanted him and,
of course, I did. It’s been a bittersweet
road with him but one I wouldn’t
change for anything because I’ve learned
so much. With the help of a great chiropractor,
[a specialist discovered the
horse had two misaligned ribs that
caused him pain when mounted] I’m
able to keep Waterloo feeling good so
On the other hand, paperwork is absolutely
complete on Figaro HP. He was
bred by High Point Hanoverians, Md.,
and is all-American. Kathleen says she
bought him as a five-year-old from a
lady who had purchased him from High
Point as a yearling “but soon realized
with his size he was never going to work
for her. Lucky me!” Kathleen says, “He
had been given his four-year-old year
off because he was growing so fast. He
had been back under saddle just a few
months, so basically I was starting from
scratch.” Kathleen has done all the
training on Figaro herself with lessons
from Linda Zang and Nicky Vogel. She
continues, “He has been a challenge and
a joy. With his big body and movement,
it can be a lot to get everything coordinated,
but when it all comes together
he can be just amazing. The great part
is his attitude. He is one of the sweetest
horses I have ever had the pleasure to
work with and he will try anything and
never says no. The hardest part has
been being patient and letting him
grow and mature in his body so that he
stays sound and happy.”
Kathleen continues, “At this show, we
did our first Musical Freestyle. It was
great fun and even though we had a
little faux pas in the counter canter, he
still got a great score and we won the
class. We also rode Second Level, Test 3
to qualify for GAIGs and even though
I didn’t think it was one of our better
rides, the judge must have seen something
she liked because he won that
class as well! On Sunday we rode Third
Level for the first time. (Lots of firsts
that weekend!) We did what I would
consider an okay job. We made some
mistakes but I was still very happy with
the overall ride. I think that given a
little more time and practice Fig will
do really well at Third. Right now our
future plans are just to keep taking
things one level at a time. I’m not in
a rush to push him and am really
enjoying the journey; not that going
FEI wouldn’t be fabulous!”
Third Level
in third level, bellisariO (belissimO
“Bo” is a flashy 16.2-hand, seven-year-

old chestnut gelding owned and ridden
by Amy Dahlgren, Va., who purchased
him in November 2009. “At that time he
was well started but all legs and angles,
absolutely no ability to carry himself,”
Amy says. Besides her demanding
career as an emergency room physician,
Amy is raising three small children
and, needless to say, she doesn’t
have as much time as she would like to
work with a trainer. In 2011, Amy with
her family and Bo moved from
Michigan to Virginia and soon discovered
the young trainer/instructor
Lauren Sprieser in Marshall, Va. Amy
has done most of the training on Bo
herself, but takes lessons from Lauren
as often as possible.
Amy boards Bo at a small hunter barn
near her home. She says, “We are the
anomaly there although I have had the
trainer, Kristin Kadar, jump Bo. I don’t
jump but he seems very talented at it
and seems to enjoy it. Bo has the best
personality. He’s like a big lap dog. He
comes over every time he sees me. He
lets my girls (Gabrielle 7 and Amanda 4)
lead him, brush him and feed him lots
of treats. They both ride him (pony
rides at this point) and I joke that he’s
their horse, not mine. I have no doubt
it will not be long before they are
really riding him. I love it when he
hangs his head over the fence and let’s
them hug his nose.”
Regarding the show and future plans
Amy says, “I was very happy with how
we did at the show. It was our first time
out at Second and Third Level and we
won both of those classes. He needs to
be stronger for the collection, though.
I would love to see him become an FEI
horse. I think he’s talented; I just hope
I’m good enough. Of course, I plan to
ride with Lauren as much as possible.
We haul up for lessons and I hope to stay
for a few weeks of more intense training
this summer. I just think Bo is amazing!
It would be difficult to find another
horse with his brain and talent!”
scored 72.432% in Fourth Level, Test 2
and 68.429% in Fourth Level, Test 1
for the win in both classes. Rider/
trainer Silva Martin says of him, “Du
Vent is a very exiting horse. He is very
powerful and a great athlete. I am having
a great time training and showing
him. Du Vent sure is on the hotter side,
but I like that about him. He has been
challenging at times but I really think
we have worked through that. We
understand each other very well and I
am very lucky to be riding such a great
horse.”
His owners T. Larry Smith and Melinda
attempt at breeding, having started our
Hanoverian breeding operation in 2002.
Du Vent possesses a remarkable presence,
Silva Martin has been working
him this year. They won both of the
Fourth Level classes in which they
“Silva also competed Du Vent’s half
– at the same show. Benefactor was
also bred by us and was sent to Silva in
was Benny’s first competition and he
and Silva won both the Materiale class
“As breeders, we have emphasized the
69.474% on Sunday. And it couldn’t
happen to a nicer young lady. Brandi is
a joy to know – always pleasant, optimistic
and energetic. She tells us about
Fenice, “He was so good at that show.
He has really started to mature over
the past year. I have been working with
Heidi Berry here in Virginia, and I also
go up to Maryland to get help from
Scott Hassler. They have both helped
me tremendously with him.”
But it hasn’t always been easy. Brandi
explains, “Fenice has taken a long time
to figure out the changes (I’m talking
years!) and over this last winter he
finally got them! This has been a huge
breakthrough for him. He has been
schooling the piaffe/passage/pirouettes
for a long time, but the changes have
been holding us up. This weekend was
a big confidence builder for me in realizing
that my horse is solid now in the
changes and I can start to focus on
making other things better.”
Although Brandi admits to being nervous
going into the test on Saturday,
she says, “I knew we were ready, but in
the back of my mind I couldn’t help
but wonder if everything would just
fall apart. As soon as I turned down the
center line and made the first halt/
salute any worries I had, completely
vanished. He was amazing. He was
confident, relaxed, and full of power.
The test was flowing and energetic and
the changes were clean and big! He
waited for me in the tempis and never
got flustered. All the years of work and
trying new exercises, and being happy
with small micro-steps of improvement,
paid off after that test. I was sitting on
a solid FEI horse that I had made from
the beginning! There is something really
special about that.
“Sunday the test was also good. It lacked
a little of the power that the other test
had, and he got a little tighter, but my
changes were clean and he actually
scored better. What made me really
happy was that two different judges
had seen my horse go on two different
days, and both scored him very similarly.
This made me even more confident
in my horse and his training.”
“I think what I’ve learned through these
“I’m very proud of him in this heat,”
said Gallman of Woden. “He gets sort
of nervous, we were worried about
him being far from home. My team
test was really good. The trot wasn’t
as great as we would have liked it to
be, but it was still better than average.
I was happy. Every show has been an
improvement.”
Gallman, 17, and Woden, 14, started
training with Steven Birchall at Clear
Spring Farm in Rancho Santa Fe,
Calif., last November. “Woden came
Facing: Seventeen-year-old Cassidy Gallman
of Poway, Calif., and her 14-year-old Hanoverian
gelding Woden (Weltmeyer-Derby/Ankum)
won all three of the FEI Junior classes at the
Golden State Dressage Classic & CDI* with
scores of 67.207%, 68.026% and a 71.125%
for their Freestyle. Woden was bred by
Above: The four-year-old Hanoverian mare Cabria JW (Cabalito-Pagoda/Prinz Gaylord) and Carrie
Harnden of Escalon, Calif., scored over 70% in all of their classes, winning four of their five classes.
Cabria was bred by Josie Walsh of Los Gatos, Calif.
into my barn for sale and I thought
they would be a super match,” said
Brichall. “They’ve just been awesome.
He’s not the easiest horse – he’s a
Weltmeyer and is a little opinionated.
They started out in this season’s first
CDIs not doing well but have increased
their scores 10 to 15 percentage points.”
Gallman and Woden have won the
FEI Junior Team Individual and
Freestyle tests at their last three selection
trials – Del Mar National in April,
Flintridge Dressage in May and now
the Golden State Classic. Their goal is
to make the Region 7 team for Kentucky.
“He’s a super cool horse,” said Gallman.
“I’ve become a better rider so I know
how to control him now. His trot is
very big and bouncy. The half passes
are my favorite on him.” Wodan was
bred by Herbert and Irene Ilg.
Young rider Jamie Pestana is lucky
to be competing with her eight-yearold
Hanoverian gelding Winzalot
(Wolkenstein II-Franzisca/Frappant).
Winzalot colicked 10 days before last
year’s North American Junior & Young
Rider Championships. He had a perforated
colon and had to have surgery
at UC Davis, where Pestana is now an
undergraduate student with the goal
of becoming a veterinarian. It turns
out that Winzalot was allergic to the
internal sutures so he herniated. He
had a second surgery to replace the
sutures with metal staples, but he
reacted to the staples as well and UC
Davis performed a third surgery to
remove those. It’s been a long haul, and
this was only their second show of the
2012 season. Luckily, Pestana was able
to ride Winzalot a bit between surgeries
and that helped get them back in
the show ring.
“I’m working on getting his strength
back,” explained Pestana. “At each show
he’s been a little stronger. Friday, in the
team test, he was a little excitable but
Saturday’s Individual test was better. I
thought moments of it were some of our
best moves ever. And then there were
movements when his attention span just
wasn’t there. Overall, I was happy with
him considering everything. He’s finally
getting his fitness and strength back.”
Winzalot, a 16.3-hand dark bay, placed
second in all three of the Young Rider
selection classes with scores of 66.272%,
24 T HE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN
68.772% and 73.042%. The pair placed
second in the Freestyle by only .208%.
Their freestyle music was put together
by Terry Gallo, which included “Fun
House” by Pink for the walk work, music
from Slum Dog Millionaire for the
trot, and “Today is Your Last Day” by
Nickelback for the canter.
“I thought his canter work was pretty
good other than one spook,” said Pestana.
“It was the most rideable he’s been in
the canter. His trot work was maybe not
our best but he was still satisfactory. And
his canter pirouettes were really good.”
Pestana purchased Winzalot as a threeyear-old.
Dennis Callin had found him
for Pestana at Catherine Haddad’s barn
in Germany. He was bred by Hans-
Heiner Duescher.
Chelsey Sibley of Sonora, Calif., rode
Starr Vaughn Equestrian’s 10-year-old
Hanoverian stallion Donner Starr to wins
in the Prix St. Georges on all three days.
His scores went up as the show went on
earning 66.97%, 68.289% and 71.842%.
“Here, he’s just been a star,” said Sibley.
“He’s finally starting to get the whole
program down. He’s really strong in
the Prix St. Georges and I’ll start showing
him at Intermediaire I soon.”
“He was so easy and strong riding through
the test,” continued Sibley. “Everything
has gotten better. His pirouettes have
progressed. They’ve sort of been a
problem that he’s had for a little bit, now
he’s doing really well. I’m working on
keeping him up more in the extended
trot. He’s coming out of his shoulder
now that we’ve started working on the
Grand Prix movements.”
“Rancho Murieta was a new place for
him and he was a little worried the first
day and distracted by stuff, but he did
everything I wanted and was really
good. When he’s good he’s easy to ride.
You just sit up there and ride him
through the test and it’s automatic.
He’s been getting like this the last few
months. I’ve had him for two years and
it seems like it takes me about that long
to really get to know a horse and for

them to get to know me and my aids. I feel that we’re really
in sync now and he’s understanding everything that I want,”
said Sibley.
Starr Vaughn Equestrian of Wilton, Calif., bred Donner Starr
(Domiro-EM Waranja/Walt Disney I). His dam EM Waranja
is one of Genay Vaughn’s young rider mounts, and placed
sixth at the Festival of Champions at Gladstone earlier this
month.
Carrie Harnden of Escalon, Calif., scored over 70% in all of
her classes with her four-year-old Hanoverian mare Cabria JW.
They won four of their five classes at the show. Cabria JW is
by the Elite stallion Cabalito out of Pagoda, by Prinz Gaylord,
and was bred by Josie Walsh of Los Gatos, Calif. Harnden
purchased Cabria JW from Walsh as a two-year-old.
Above: The 10-year-old Hanoverian stallion Donner Starr (Domiro-EM Waranja/
Walt Disney I) and Chelsey Sibley of Sonora, Calif., won Prix St. Georges on
all three days of the Golden State Dressage Classic & CDI* show, scoring 66.97%,
68.289% and 71.842%. Donner Star was bred by Starr Vaughn Equestrian
Center of Wilton, Calif.
“She has jumping lines but she’s proving to be a good dressage
horse,” said Harnden. “I broke her and she’s been very easy
and so uncomplicated. She’s the best horse I’ve owned in my
life. Her trainability is amazing.”
This was Cabria’s third show under saddle and she won all of
her classes at the Shasta Chapter of the CDS show in May and
at the Dressage in the Redwoods show. She was also named the
“Cabria was a little tense out there, but her trainability is so
great,” said Harnden of their Materiale class on Saturday
morning where they scored 78.1%. “She just settled as she
went on out there. She was unflappable. The judge [Sarah
Geikie] loved her. She said all three of her gaits were fabulous
and she could see potential in the mare.” n
a five-year (2012-2016) lifetime foal
recording contract with the United
States Equestrian Foundation (USEF).
Judy Hedreen reported on the possible
development of a Hanoverian Young
Breeders Camp. The concept would
be to introduce young breeders to the
Hanoverian breed with the goal of
having an AHS Young Breeders Team
Executive Director’s Report: The office
is operating well and Carol Hienzsch
is a valued member of the staff. The
office has begun to process inspection
tour and Futurity entries. Terri
Ralenkotter has been engaged as the
AHS’s new Publications Editor. Her
duties will begin with the fall issue of
the quarterly magazine and the 2013
Stallion Book. AHS member Annetta
Coleman spent April 20 at the central
office observing and analyzing
AHS operations. She has provided
valuable input in assessing AHS’s IT
requirements. The inspection tour
itinerary was produced by the Inspection
Tour Planning Committee and the
summer tour was ticketed on May 15.
The office has been working with
legal counsel at Wyatt, Tarrant and
28 T HE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN
that all participants will be required
to sign during this year’s inspection
and Cheryl Johnson are planning the
2013 annual meeting that will be held
January 17-20 in San Diego. At this
time hotels are being reviewed; the
full agenda will appear in the summer
Elections will be held this fall for
open board positions. Those members
whose terms expire at the end of this
year are Steve Carroll, Judy Hedreen,
Doug Langer, Barbara Schmidt, Edgar
Schutte, and Meg Williams. The
office will work with Nominations
Committee Chair Diane Nauman to
implement the election process.
Treasurer Vanessa Carlson reported
for the Finance Committee that the
2011/12 finances are very much in
line with the budget. It is anticipated
that revenues will increase as inspection
tour enrollments are received.
Rick Toering, Chair of the Rules and
Grievances Committee, reported that
a draft of the proposed revisions to
the society’s By-Laws and Rules for
Registration would be available for
the committee’s review within two
weeks.
Suzanne Quarles reported for the 2012
Inspection Tour Planning Committee.
A number of new documents will be
utilized during this year’s inspections,
including a liability waiver which
has been approved by the AHS’s
legal counsel and insurance carrier.
A webinar will be held to familiarize
the judges with this year’s new procedures
and a later one will be held for
site hosts.
DID YOU KNOW? Horses have 16 muscles in each ear, allowing them to rotate their ears 180 degrees.
Doug Langer reported that the Breeding
Assistance Committee is now in operation
with Mary Lou Winn as Chair.
A number of member inquiries have
already been addressed.
New Business. With the April 18
resignation of the AHS’s long-time
computer consultant, the AHS was in
receipt of a proposal from USEF to
meet the AHS’s IT needs, specifically
hardware/software maintenance. AHS
member Annetta Coleman, who had
been invited to lead this discussion,
stated that the AHS’s present system is
outdated and has limitations. However,
the database is sound, functional and
efficient in implementing the work
flow, particularly the issuing of foal
registration papers. The AHS hardware
had not been significantly updated in
15 years and she expressed confidence
that USEF’s proposal was accurate
and could maintain the AHS’s future
software/hardware needs. A lengthy
discussion ensued, including feedback
that had been gathered from the Welsh
Pony and Cob Association, Friesian
Horse Association of North America,
and the United States Hunter Jumper
Association, three of several companies
for whom the USEF IT department
Motion to approve the IT upgrades
outlined in the USEF’s May 1, 2012
the AHS’s hardware/software requirements.
