Overview of all Rottweil shotshells 38
The foundation of the Rottweil powder factory
on the Neckar goes back, according to old documents,
to the 15th century. The name Rottweil
became famous thanks firstly to the red Waidmannsheil
shot cartridge and since 1921 to the current day
thanks to the legendary “black Waidmannsheil” with its
cardboard case. Rottweil shot cartridges have been made
since 1971 in Fürth-Stadeln under the control of the company
RUAG Ammotec GmbH. Rottweil hunting and sport
shot cartridges have always had a good reputation with
regards to their quality and performance and are appre-
RWS started development of rust-free propellants
back in 1901. Instead of the previously
used potassium chlorate, which often caused
rust formation and barrel erosion, the ammunitions
specialist tested various other substances
such as e.g. barium nitrate. Increasing numbers
of slow-rusting propellants came into use after 1910.
The main breakthrough only came in 1918 once trizinate
had been tested for use in ignition caps. Trizinate is very
storage stable and has excellent ignition characteristics,
The brands
ciated equally around the world by hunters
and sporting shooters. Most of the “Rottweil
employees” are themselves enthusiastic hunters
and clay pigeon shooters. Their valuable
experience is constantly added to the development process
and has an influence on even the smallest details of the
Rottweil shotgun cartridges. This personal engagement
is a part of our company philosophy: At the moment of
firing, hunters and sporting shooters can concentrate on
the essentials and place their trust at all times in Rottweil
shot cartridges.
but is also very insensitive. Only the addition
of tetraze made trizinate sensitive enough for
use. This propellant was patented in 1926,
called SINOXID ® and is, as a focal invention,
now used around the world. The advantages
of the SINOXID ® mixture are still valid today: Rust and
erosion-free action, uniform action, high storage stability
and reduction of environmental pollution thanks to
the mercury-free components.
A Nobel prize for ammunition
... This doesn’t actually exist, but
when Alfred Nobel created the Alfred
Nobel & Co. in 1865 to produce the
dynamite he had developed, the pioneering
spirit and inventiveness he
demonstrated were the keys to his
success. The search for new ways,
the visions of new products and
properties were part of the company philosophy from
the very start. The Nobel Peace Prize created by Alfred
Nobel, and awarded many times over to researchers,
artistic and socially engaged people, proves every year
what importance aiming for improvements had, even
in the personal life philosophy of the company founder.
The company retained this spirit of
research even after Nobel’s death
in 1896. In the spring of 2002, the
ammunitions business of Dynamit
Nobel was taken over by the Swiss
technology group RUAG. The newly
created RUAG Ammotec GmbH can
now take advantage of the chance
to create new synergies and further develop the latest
ammunitions technology. It is no wonder that millions
of hunters and sporting shooters around the world place
their trust in the traditional brands of RWS, Rottweil,
Norma, HP and GECO.
High quality products
For more than a century now,
ammunition products have been
manufactured at the Fürth-Stadeln
RUAG Ammotec GmbH factory.
The company has had a lively
history. In 1855, Heinrich Utendoerffer
received permission to set
up a laboratory for the production of propellants. In 1889
Utendoerffer then sold his company, which was then still
located in Nuremberg, in 1889 to the “Rheinisch Westfälische
Sprengstoff-Actien-Gesellschaft” (RWS) founded
in 1886 in Troisdorf. After there were repeated problems
2 3
in Nuremberg with regards to concession
allocations, the factory was
moved in 1894 to today’s Fürth district
of Stadeln. In 1971, the shot
cartridge production, founded in
Rottweil am Neckar and located
for decades in Karlsruhe-Durlach,
was moved to Fürth-Stadeln. Since then, Rottweil shot
cartridges for hunting and sport have been produced
here together with another wide range of products with
“explosive characters”. Production is carefully monitored
so that you can shoot successfully and safely.
The case
Up until 1960, shot cartridges only came
with cardboard cases. Since the increased
industrial use of plastics in the 70’s, completely
non-swelling plastic cases have also
been in use. However, some cartridges are
still produced with cardboard in order to
counter increasingly significant environmental
problems. The cardboard case tube
is produced with several, glued-together
layers of a high-quality Kraft paper, perfectly
calibrated and glazed, then lacquered
as protection against moisture. The
base plug in cardboard cases consists of a
special cardboard, perfectly dimensioned
and produced by strongly compressing spirally
wound cardboard strips. This stabilises
the case floor, contains the propellant
and seals the case to the rear during firing.
The ignition
The shot cartridge ignition is a centerfire
ignition (also called: medium ignition)
and is located in the ignition bell of the
case floor. It is an anvil ignition because
the ignition case contains the ignition
cap with the very impact sensitive propellant
and the anvil. The housing, anvil and ignition cap
form a compact unit. The ignition can only work reliably
Quality decides
The plastic case tube consists of polyethylene
(PE). Polyethylene is, according
to technical regulations, not a hazardous
substance and can therefore be disposed
of in domestic waste/general waste. A
thick-walled tube is produced and this
tube is continuously bi-axially stretched
in a special system. This results in fivefold
strengthening of the output tube. The
tube is pressed, together with the brass
head, to form the cartridge base by means
of the base plug. The brass head is made
of sheet steel and then brass-plated. The
imprinted numbers indicate the calibre
of the cartridge. The brass head in plastic
cases replaces the card inlay thanks to its
special shape. This results in both a solid
fit of the primer and good sealing thanks
to the high elasticity of the plastic material.
when a perfect firing pin strikes deeply
enough into the centre of the ignition
cap with sufficient energy. The propellant
is pushed against the anvil by the
firing pin impact where it ignites within
a thousandth of a second. This energy
is transferred in the form of a powerful
flame through the flash hole and ignites the powder.
A balanced mixture
The intermediate material (wad)
The fibre wad, card wad, H-wad and plastic case plug
all act separately or in combination as the intermediate
wad material sealing the powder chamber away
from the shot load in the cartridge. The wad is necessary
to transfer the surge of combustion gases as force
against the shot load. It also acts as an effective sealant
against the escape of hot powder gases to the
shot load. If this extreme heat acted directly
on the lead shot load, it could cause lumps
to form through the sticking together of shot
grains. This would lead to a hit pattern with
poor coverage and the clumped shot grains
would also have a greater range, thus putting
considerable areas around the target area in
danger. The wad material must therefore be
so elastic and plastic that it expands circularly
when compressed by the pressure of the combustion
gases. This ensures secure gas sealing
behind the shot load both in the case, the
chamber cone of the firing chamber and when
passing through the barrel. In addition to gas
sealing, it also effects reliable cleaning of the
barrel walls, removing residues and deposits
left by the previous shot. The plastic cup wad
prevents the lead shot from being abraded in the barrel.
The rear section acts like a collar seal during the shot;
powder gases cannot therefore escape in that direction.
The powder
The smokeless nitrocellulose powder is an offensive
combusting powder. When it is ignited, the powder
charge is converted almost without smoke and without
residues into a large gas volume which provides the
shot with the necessary energy. The type and amount of
powder is decisive in determining the gas pressure, to a
4 5
large extent the speed and to some extent the shot pattern
scatter, the recoil and the function of the cartridge
in self-loading shotguns.
The shot charge
The shot grains, made of a special lead alloy, are cast
in a shot tower 43 m high. The molten lead drips from
the top of the tower through a sieve-type container
into a water container at the foot of the
tower. The fall through the tower creates the
ball shape of the shot. A mechanical sorting
device automatically sorts out irregular and
incorrectly dimensioned grain sizes. Rottweil
shot cartridges use GECO-X hard shot which
contains special alloy supplements and is surface
treated. This almost completely prevents
deformation of the shot and lead deposits
in the barrel. Lead shot has been increasingly
criticised over the past years because of
increasing environmental awareness. Rottweil
has therefore concentrated in detail on alternatives
to lead shot. It was however determined
that currently there are no high-quality,
technical and cost effective replacements for
lead shot apart from soft iron shot. Steel shot
however has different ballistic properties and cannot be
dealt with here in just a few sentences. We have therefore
dedicated a separate chapter to the topic of “steel
shot” (see Page 18 and 26).
The crimp
In modern shot cartridges, the case mouth is crimped
closed over the shot charge in a star crimp pattern,
which reduces the length of the cartridge (in comparison
to the roll crimp with cover wad that is only used
infrequently).
The different calibres
The calibre designation for shotguns comes from England
and is internationally valid. The calibre is based on
the number of uniformly round balls, cast from pure
lead, that weigh precisely one English pound (453.6 g).
16 uniformly sized balls are therefore known as calibre
16. The most common shotgun calibres are 12, 16, 20,
28 and 36 (=.410). The calibre data and the manufacturer
data are imprinted on the cartridge base of shotgun
cartridges. The case length is also given with the calibre
information, e.g. calibre 16/70. The entire case length is
defined, e.g. 65, 67.5, 70, 76 or 89 mm. Sealed cartridges
are generally approx. 6 mm shorter with roll crimps and
approx. 11 mm shorter for star crimps than the nomi-
nal measurement given for case length. Therefore cartridges
with longer cases can fit without problem before
firing into shotguns with shorter firing chambers. When
the case mouth opens or unfolds after firing, the chamber
cone of a shorter firing chamber prevents complete
opening of the case. This causes a blockage of the shot
load in the firing chamber cone and this can lead to
an increase in gas pressure. In order to manufacture a
single cartridge type for the chamber lengths 65 and
70 mm, cartridges with a case length (average length)
of 67.5 mm have been developed for 12, 16 and 20
calibres.
In Germany, as in other C.I.P. * member states, shot cartridge
manufacturers must comply with specific limits
set out in the firing laws. This specifies that the average
gas pressure in calibre
12 must not exceed a value
of 740 bar, 780 bar for calibre
16 and 820 bar for calibre
20. With the shot pattern, it is
not the initial speed directly
before the barrel mouth (V 0 )
that is measured, but the V 2.5 ,
i.e. the speed at 2.5 m distance
from the barrel mouth.
The flight speed of the shot
grains is mainly dependent
on the shot grain size. V 2.5
measurements may vary considerably
even if the initial
speed is identical, as shot
with smaller diameters lose
speed more rapidly due to
the air resistance acting on
the lower intrinsic weight
of the shot. The total shot width of lead shot, i.e. the
distance where it could endanger the area surrounding
the target, can be roughly calculated as follows:
Shot size x 100 = danger area in m.
Playing it safe
15 m
normal cartridges
25 m
normal cartridges
6 7
Example: 3 mm shot x 100 = 300 m. This is the greatest
possible hazard with a favourable firing angle. This hazard
area is significantly lower for soft iron shot because of
the lower specific weight
of the shot. Clumping shot
however forms projectiles of
greater weight and therefore,
depending on the weight of
the shot lumps, can endanger
the surroundings at significantly
greater distances. The
15 m
spreader cartridges
25 m
spreader cartridges
huntsman shot firing distance
using lead shot is between
35 and at the most 40 m
depending on calibre and shot
grain size. In addition, scattering
is so great that there is
not sufficient patterning. The
penetration force and therefore
the effective killing effect
of the shot decreases with
increasing shot distance – and
this occurs more rapidly, the
smaller the shot is.
Waidmannsheil pappe – Masterfully perfected for demanding hunters
The legendary Waidmannsheil Pappe has been around for
almost a century now and it can look back upon a long
tradition. Generations of hunters are familiar with this
cartridge, which originally used to be produced with a red
and blue case. The constant optimisation process means
that the Waidmannsheil Pappe has developed into one of
the most mature shot cartridges with practically no rivals
amongst the other shot cartridges available.
This cartridge type is characterised by the highest possible
shot weights in calibres 12 and 20. The high shot weight
of the Rottweil Magnum guarantees sufficient killing force
even at long-range limits. This can be a factor of hunting
success in particular for small game hunting where longrange
shooting is often necessary due to unfavourable
surroundings. The Magnum cartridge may only be used in
shotguns with 76 mm (3”) firing chambers.
THE SPECIAL QUALITIES AT A GLANCE:
• The biodegradable cardboard case and intermediate
material made of a cardboard wad and fibre wad means
that this cartridge is particularly environmentally-friendly.
• The case is also coated with impact-resistant paint that
protects the cartridge against moisture. The cartridges
can be loaded even in damp weather or rain.
• The 20 mm brass head makes this cartridge particularly
high quality.
• The high quality intermediate material combination
of fibre wad and cardboard wad means that different
choke bores can be better utilised. This has in turn a
positive effect on the patterning.
• The additional cardboard inlay optimally seals off the
powder chamber. This ensures uniform combustion of
the powder.
• The shooting pattern of the Waidmannsheil Pappe is
perfect in every aspect.
Magnum – Particularly powerful for more patterning
THE SPECIAL QUALITIES AT A GLANCE:
• The high shot weight ensures excellent patterning even
for longer distances.
• The black plastic case made of PE is extremely resistant
to moisture.
• The 20 mm brass head makes this cartridge particularly
high quality.
• The cup wad used in the Magnum is extraordinarily
stable and prevents the shot from wear in the barrel.
• The rear-facing part of the wad seals the shot load
against powder gas thanks to the special construction of
the seal lips. Clumping is therefore prevented.
• The guidance of the shot in the cup wad leads to a
tighter shooting pattern.
“The hunting desire sent me out one evening
last August. I aimed for a small ladder near
to a foxhole, climbed up and got myself in
place. Time passed and it got steadily darker. I
had already accepted the thought of returning
home without any prizes and was picking
up my rifle shotgun to unload it when I
saw a movement near the main hole. A grey
shadow slowly came out of the hole. No more
time for the binoculars so I used the telescopic
sights. It was true: a fox. It suddenly turned
and started going back to the hole. Now eve-
rything went really fast: aim, release and ..
fire! My load of 3.5 mm Waidmannsheil
shot did a good job. The red fox leapt up and
then collapsed on himself. Only then did I
realise how the hunting fever had gripped me.
I climbed down to look at the fox. The closer
I came, the larger he got. An impressive dog
of approx. 8 kg in weight lay before me. My
black Rottweil ® Waidmannsheil once again
gave me good service.”
Jochen Borchert, President of the
German Hunting Association (Deutscher
Jagdschutzverband)
“When winter has returned to the hunting
grounds and the deer and foxes are wearing
their thick winter furs, that’s when I love to
go hunting with the Rottweil ® Magnum.
It’s the first choice when it is important to
hit the game spot-on thanks to its heavy load
and excellent patterning.”
Tiger Disperseur – Classic excellence for short distances
Rottweil was the first shot cartridge manufacturer to have
the idea of using the spreader device originally designed
for clay pigeon shooting also for hunting cartridges. This
special variation of the Tiger Disperseur is ideal for successful
shooting over short ranges, e.g. forest hunting or
crossing ducks. Greater patterning of the shot pattern is
achieved with the spreader device.
THE SPECIAL QUALITIES AT A GLANCE:
• The spreader device effects a greater patterning of the
shot pattern up to approx. 25 m.
• The hit probability is greater through the higher
patterning and the venison loss is lower.
• The H-wad optimally seals off the powder chamber. This
ensures uniform combustion of the powder.
Supertrap 24 HV – Extremely fast for unerring competitors
Amongst shooters, this fast cartridge made a name for itself
since its introduction years ago as a high performance (HV
= High Velocity) cartridge for clay disc shooting. Despite its
speed, the shot is optimally and uniformly distributed. The
HV series is therefore particularly suited for all Olympic
and other clay pigeon shooting disciplines
THE SPECIAL QUALITIES AT A GLANCE:
• The Supertrap 24 HV is extremely fast at 420 m/s. Hit
probability is increased enormously with this speed and
the uniform patterning of the shot.
• The 20 mm brass head makes this cartridge particularly
high quality.
• The cup wad used is extremely stable and prevents the
shot from wear in the barrel.
“In autumn 2004, I was invited to hunt at
an extremely good pheasant shoot. I took my
place with my Rottweil ® rifle 700 Sporting
shotgun and with Rottweil ® Tiger Disper-
seur 2.7 mm in my bags. The driven pheasants
came flying over very fast. I aimed and shot.
The pheasants fell like stones from heaven.
The greater patterning of the Rottweil ®
Tiger Disperseur once again led me to an
excellent hunting success.”
Engelbert Schulze-Heil, hunter
“Many of my greatest successes are due to the
Rottweil ® Supertrap 24 HV. The Super-
trap 24 HV is extremely fast. That allows
optimal triggering on the pigeon. Missed hits
that result from various forward allowances
under different pigeon throwing distances
and wind are reduced here to a minimum.
The Rottweil ® Supertrap 24 HV achieves
equally high speed and top patterning so
that the pigeon safely shatters on the second
shot. This is extremely important for mental
strength during competitions. The excellent
patterning is due to the homogenous shot
in this super-fast trap cartridge. For these
reasons, I put my trust in my Rottweil ®
Supertrap 24 HV.”
Express - Specially developed for particular hunting situations
These special cartridges are produced in various shot diameters.
Normally known as buckshot they are designed for specific
hunting applications and are used in countries where
“rough shooting” is allowed for cloven game. The use of
buckshot can be appropriate especially at short range and
under particular land conditions (e.g. thick bush).
The new Rottweil EXACT slug cartridge has been designed
for precision. Five shots from a distance of 50 meters generally
result in patterns of 2 ½ to 5 cm (see chart below). This
makes it the most precise Rottweil slug cartridge ever. And
it is also an inexpensive alternative to classical slugs with
felt wad.
THE SPECIAL QUALITIES AT A GLANCE:
• This cartridge is designed for special hunting applications.
• The plastic case made of PE is extremely resistant to
moisture.
• The H-wad optimally seals off the powder chamber. This
ensures uniform combustion of the powder.
• The transparent case shows the contents at a glance and
prevents the mistaken use of cartridges with buckshot.
Exact – for outstanding accuracy
THE SPECIAL QUALITIES AT A GLANCE:
• The aerodynamic shape of the head of the slug with spiralshaped
grooves (1) improves the trajectory characteristics
and guarantees outstanding accuracy. Guide rings on
the top and bottom of the slug (2) ensure that it passes
smoothly through the barrel and the barrel constriction,
to achieve the highest levels of precisions for all chokes.
Since only the guide rings of the bullet only make contact
with the inside of the barrel, this construction also reduces
the level of lead choking in the barrel.
• The plastic case made of PE is extremely resistant to
moisture.
• Available in all the standard calibers, also as a magnum
cartridge.
“A slug fired from the smooth barrel of a
shotgun will never achieve the precision of
a spin-stabilised centrefire bullet. However
sometimes using slugs is the most practical
and efficient way of hunting ground game,
particularly running boar, and so the hunter
should use the most accurate and efficient slug
available. I have used the Rottweil Exact in
several of my weapons and am convinced of
its precision and performance. It holds its
accuracy out to 50 meters and the very com-
petitive price makes the Exact the ideal car-
tridge for hunting running boar.“
Norbert Klups, weapon expert, hunting
journalist and author of several books
The fascination of dynamics
At some point in his career every hunter would
like to be successful with a shotgun. Rifle shooting
requires a calm, steady, mental and physical
approach in contrast to using a shotgun, which is
a complex combination of fast physical and mental
adjustments. When hunting, decisions are made in
a split second to ensure that game is killed cleanly
and efficiently. This technique, when hunting wildfowl
or small game requires practice and, of course,
the correct ammunition. With shotshells everything
from the powder to the pellets must be perfectly
balanced to produce a cartridge that delivers the
required performance. To get the combination of
range, pattern and impact requires research, dedication
and production techniques and with Rottweil
shotshells you get all of these together. The
use of selected components and excellent quality
control ensure that Rottweil shotshells not only
perform but perform safely. This is a priority for the
renowned German manufacturer.
If you want to make a days hunting a memorable
ULTIMATE – High Power Tungsten Shot
The new Rottweil Ultimate, a high perfor-
mance cartridge perfect for even the most
demanding of hunters. The Rottweil Ultimate
can be used in the most sensitive environmen-
tal areas where lead shot is unacceptable, and
also in areas where better performance than
lead is required. The strength of the Rottweil
Ultimate is in its use of Tungsten shot. Tungsten
has a density of 12g/cm³, which is higher than
lead, but environmentally it is acceptable as
soft iron. An advantage of the higher density
of Tungsten against lead is that using the same
load a shot size smaller can be chosen. This
means more pellets and a greater chance of a
clean kill.
Information on tungsten
The name of the chemical element tungsten (German
also: wolfram) derives from Tung Sten (Swedish:
“heavy stone”). The special features of this material
are the extremely high density and stability. Furthermore,
it is extremely corrosion resistant. With these
material features when referring to ballistic and environmental
compatibility, tungsten is superior to classic
lead and other lead-free alternatives (like e. g. soft
iron, zinc, bismuth and mixed materials).
Hunting shotshells with standard components for volume users
For hunters with high ammunition consumption,
the shotshells of the Rottweil Basic Line are a good
alternative with small qualitative concessions. The
price advantage results from the use of less expensive
components. The shotshells fulfil all expectations of
even patterning and high performance, as well as a
good hit rate. They are ideal for hunting with high
volume of rounds, for example pigeon hunting.
Steel Line
Soft iron shotshells for hunters that are conscious of the environment
Already for many years, the question of “shooting
waterfowl with lead shot” has been a hot topic
in Europe. As at stagnant or running waters and
in environmentally sensitive areas, there is the
danger that bottom-feeding waterfowl eat lead
shot and come to harm.
For this reason, regulations have been passed in
nearly all German states prohibiting the use of lead
shot for hunting at and above waters. Accordingly,
whoever violates these regulations deliberately or
negligently is fined with up to EUR 5,000.
Whether for older weapons, for long ranges, for
short ranges, for small lead factors or for high
energies: Rottweil offers an extensive programme
of lead-free shotshells that depending on the hunting
purpose is a sensible alternative to lead shot.
Rottweil Steel Game Magnum
– Lead-free for higher patterning
Rottweil Steel Game
– Lead-free for sensitive countryside areas
The shotshell with C.I.P.-conform soft iron shot
was especially developed for hunting in environmentally
Rottweil Steel Game HV
– The fast soft iron cartridge
Rottweil has expanded its assortment of soft
iron shotshells by adding a fast load. This leadfree
cartridge with C.I.P. approved soft iron
shot distinguishes itself from the Rottweil Steel
Game by the high velocity – HV = High Velocity.
It emits more energy at the target also at larger
shooting distances. The Rottweil Steel Game
HV with qualified soft iron shot is especially
beneficial to the environment and suitable for
waterfowl.
Rottweil Steel Game Speed 28
– Fast, light and environmentally friendly
The new „Speed 28“ is a light and fast soft
iron shotshell of the Steel Game series. Due to
the high maximum muzzle velocity (V2.5) of
425 m/s, the lead factor at moving targets can
be reduced.
At the same time, the Steel Game „Speed
28“ can be shot with shotguns with standard
proof marks without restriction in the choice
of the choke. Ideally suitable for smaller up to
medium-sized waterfowl (e. g. teals).
WORLD NOVELTY
Steel Game Disperseur
The world´s first steel shotshell with spreading effect
Ideal and even patterning at shooting distances of up to 20 m.
The shot cone of dispersion of the Steel Game Disperseur
spreads as well as that of spreader cartridges with lead shot and
almost three times better* than regular soft iron cartridges.
Poly-cube soft iron shot due to their out-of-round surface
ensure an ideal dispersion of the shot. In addition to that, the
sharp edges of the shot have a higher lethal effect.
Due to the somewhat reduced velocity of the cartridge a
better dispersion and thus an ideal patterning is achieved at
shorter distances.
– i.e. ideal even distribution of
the hits on the total surface
No special steel shot proofed shotguns necessary.
The Steel Game Disperseur can be shot with all
standard proofed shotguns.
*) The measure to determine the dispersion is the so-called density, i. e. the hit rate
in the inner circle of the test target in relation to the outer circle. Whereas regular
soft iron shotshells have a density of 5.1:1 (more than 5 times as many hits in the
inner circle than in the outer circle) the Steel Game Disperseur has an excellent
density of 1.9:1. The dispersion effect is almost three times higher than with regular
soft iron cartridges.
**) Shooting distance 20m
The secret of these excellent spreading features is the combination
of special poly-cube soft iron shot with an effective
spreader device, as well as an ideal velocity.
The low spreader device increases the spreading effect, however,
due to its lower height leaves more space for shot in
the cup which increases the hit rate. A strong steel shot cup,
which ensures that the square shot does not damage the
barrel of the shotgun.
Rottweil Steel Game Disperseur
– Lead-free for short range
Worldwidely unique this cartridge combines
steel shot with a dispersion effect which so
far is only known from lead shotshells with a
spreader device. Now in areas where no lead
shot is allowed an ideal pattern can be achieved
at short range without destroying the venision.
Out-of-round poly-cube soft iron shot and an
effective spreader device allow an excellent
spreading with an optimization of the amount
of shot at the same time.
You’d rather shoot lead free?
Soft iron shotshells for shooting
sports you will find on page 29.
The flight behaviour of soft iron shot
In comparison to conventional lead shot, soft iron shot has
a disadvantage of a lower specific weight. Soft iron shot flies
slower and not so far with 7.8 g/cm3 compared to 11.0 g/cm3 for lead. In order to compensate the flight behaviour and the
energy loss of soft iron shot compared to lead balls, the size
of the soft iron shot must be selected around 2 shot numbers
higher for the same hunting purpose. In simplified terms:
Instead of a shot cartridge with 2.7 mm (No. 6) lead shot, a
shot cartridge with 3.2 mm (No. 4) soft iron shot must be
used.
How does soft iron shot behave in the barrel?
The general rule for soft iron shot is: “the smaller the shot, the
better it is for the barrel”!
speed of maximum 425 m/s are, according to the C.I.P. * decision,
normal cartridges; they can therefore be used without
reservations in normal firing shotguns.
• Shot over 3.25 mm require weapons that can withstand firing
with higher pressures (1370 bar) and soft iron shot firing. The
choke profile of the weapon must be at least 60 mm long and
taper off conically and uniformly. Tested weapons are marked
with a lily.
• Shot above 4 mm diameter may only be fired from weapons
with a throat of ½ choke (max. 0.5 mm).
The shot cups have special significance in soft iron shot car-
tridges. In order to protect the barrel interior from the harder
soft iron shot, the shot cups have thicker walls and are made
of a significantly stronger material.
Brass head Made of sheet steel, brass-plated and surface treated against discolouration and corrosion.
The brass head connects the case cylinder with the base plug and is appropriately
formed around the edge for removal from the barrel.
Brenneke See also Original Brenneke slug.
Calibre The calibre is based on the number of uniformly round balls, cast from pure lead, that
weighs precisely one English pound (= 453.6 g). Calibre 12 therefore is the diameter
of a ball made of soft lead where 12 of these balls equal one English pound in weight.
The precise diameter is specified in the dimension tables of the firing laws.
Cardboard case Produced with several layers of glued, high-quality Kraft paper, which is then calibrated,
glazed and painted to protected against moisture.
Cardboard wad In combination with the fibre wad, this seals off the shot cartridge from the powder
chamber.
Card inlay Restricts the powder chamber and provides the case with additional strength. It consists
of several layers of Kraft paper.
Case floor Bottom of brass head, into which the calibre and the manufacturer’s mark are
imprinted.
Case length Given in mm. This is the full length of the case – not the length of the ready-loaded,
crimped cartridge – 65, 67.5, 70 or 76 mm. Crimped cartridges are generally approx.
6 mm shorter with roll crimps and approx. 11 mm shorter with star crimps than the
nominal measurement given for case length. The case length 67.5 is developed for use
with 65 mm and 70 mm firing chambers.
(ATTENTION! Do not use a 70 mm case in a 65 mm firing chamber or a 76 mm case in
a 70 mm firing chamber!).
Case mouth Front aperture of case for inserting powder, intermediate material, shot charge, etc.
Centerfire ignition Propellant and primer are located in centre of case floor.
C.I.P. Commission internationale permanente pour l‘épreuve des armes à feu portatives.
Defines the dimensions of firing chambers, barrels and action distances for weapons,
dimensions of cartridges and the maximum gas pressure values for all ammunition
types, etc.
Clump formation Produced by the escape of hot powder gases through the intermediate material into
(in lead shot) the shot charge. The direct heat effect on the shot charge leads to the welding together
of shot grains, increasing the danger area and worsening patterning.
Contact energy The contact energy is the kinetic or moving energy of the shot at the moment of contact
with the target.
Contact speed Speed at which the shot reaches the target.
Covered hit field Term for the hit area in which sufficiently effective hits are contained depending on the
shot size and type of game.
Cup wad Intermediate material. Seals the powder chamber in plastic shot cartridges from the
shot charge and encloses the shot charge with a plastic cup that protects the shot from
deformation and wear, and also the barrel from lead deposits.
Density Specifies the relationship of the hit rate in the inner circle to the outer circle of the test
target based on the surface unit. (Hit rate in inner circle x 3, divided by the hit rate in
the outer circle). Together with coverage and speed, this determines the individual efficiency
limit of the shotgun barrel.
Distribution See Density / Hit percentage.
Dud Cartridges that don’t ignite after firing.
Felt wad / Intermediate material, previously made with animal hair (felt), today made with
fibre wad wood fibre (fibre). This seals the powder chamber in shot cartridges with a cardboard
wad or H-wad from the shot charge and serves to uniformly eject the shot weight.
Firing distance Hunting shot firing distance is at most 40 m, depending on calibre and shot grain size.
Above this, scattering is so great that there is not sufficient coverage. The penetration
force and therefore the effective killing effective of the shot decreases very rapidly with
increasing shot distance. It depends greatly on the shot grain size, the ballistic data of
the cartridge, the bore choke, etc. Soft iron shot has a lower specific weight. A distance
of max. 35 m should not be exceeded in this case.
Firing pin This hits the ignition cap, igniting the powder.
Folded crimp The mouth end is folded together in a star shape over the shot (also star crimp).
Gas pressure When the powder gas ignites, the pressure rises extremely rapidly due to the great heat
development and acts in all directions, i.e. on the case, crimp, barrel wall and wad containing
the shot charge or ball cartridge.
High performance These are shot cartridges with soft iron shot which can only be used in shotguns
cartridges proofed for steel shot cartridges.
Hit percentage The number of hits in a 75 cm test area at 35 m test distance in relationship to the total
number of shot in the cartridge charge as a ratio.
H-wad Intermediate material made of plastic. Seals the shot charge from the powder chamber
in the case.
Ignition cap See Shot cartridge ignition.
Initial speed The shot speed at the barrel mouth.
Intermediate Is used to seal off the lead shot from the powder gases and is combined with
material a shot cup.
Kraft paper Special paper for cardboard cases and wads with extraordinary high strength.
Langenhagener This states that, for huntsman-worthy hunting, the scatter group should be maximum
Norm 10 cm (approx. beer mat size) for 5 shots at 50 m with a Brenneke ball cartridge. The
Nitrocellulose This is an offensive or progressive combusting.
Powder When it is ignited, the extremely small powder volume converts without much smoke
or residue into a large gas volume that provides the cartridge with its firing energy.
The type and amount of powder is decisive in determining the gas pressure, to a large
extent the speed and to some extent the shot pattern scatter, the recoil and the function
of the cartridge in self-loading shotguns.
continues to fly and whose length and width expansion continuously increases with the
increasing distance.
Patterning Term for the uniform distribution of shot on the test target. In addition to the choke
bore, the structure of the cartridge and the shot quality (roundness, uniform diameter)
all influence coverage. A good coverage is therefore when the least possible boundary
shot is present.
Plastic case Prefabricated from axially stretched polyethylene (PE). Polyethylene is, according to
technical regulations, not a hazardous substance and can therefore be disposed of in
domestic waste/general waste.
Powder gas Gas volume that provides the cartridge with its firing energy.
Range See long-range limit.
Recoil Dependent on weight of weapon, shot weight, calibre and type of powder propellant
charge.
Roll crimp A shot cartridge crimp closure with a card or plastic wad, held by the crimped case edge
(see also Top wad).
Scatter Distance of individual shot grains to one another at target. The greater the scatter, the
lower the patterning.
Semi-Magnum Shot cartridge with high shot weight that can
cartridges still be used in standard proofed shotguns.
Shot Term for the pellets in the shot cartridge, usually made of a lead alloy, today there are
alternative materials, e.g. soft iron.
Shot cartridge Consists of the sheath, anvil, ignition cap
Ignition and propellant. Is used to ignite the powder propellant charge.
Shot charge See Shot weight.
Shot grain number Number system for identifying shot diameter, e.g. no. 5 = 3 mm.
Shot grain size Usually between 2 and 4 mm, in steps of 0.25 mm.
Shot pattern See Pattern.
Shot weight Number of shot grains and total weight.
Slug See also Original Brenneke slug.
Soft iron shot (= Steel shot). Alternative to lead shot that is being legally prescribed due to environmental
protection aspects.
Spreader device Cross-shaped plastic insert in shot charge that ensures the shot pattern is formed rapidly
after leaving the barrel. Spreader cartridges are used in game hunting, short-range
and in skeet shooting.
Steel shot (Also called soft iron shot). Alternative to lead shot that is being legally prescribed due
to environmental protection aspects.
Star crimp The mouth end is folded together in a star shape over the shot (also folded crimp).
Subsonic Special cartridges with subsonic speeds and
Cartridges therefore reduced noise level. Required for noise-sensitive shooting ranges.
Sulphur antimony (= antimony sulphide), powder component.
Tetrazes Extremely impact-sensitive compound of yellowish, water-insoluble crystals. Is used as
initial explosive for the ignition.
Top wad Covers the shot charge in shot cartridges with roll crimps.
Total danger Gives the total flight width of the shot, not to.
Zone of the shot be mistaken with long-range limit. Guidelines in meter: Shot diameter in mm x 100.
Trizinate Lead tri-nitro-resorcinate, used as initial explosive for the ignition.
