Editorial
Th e Summer ended with
a burst of activity as the
Annual Activities Week
brought the seaside to the
Village. Th ere were too many
photos for us to be able to
include them all - especially
as there was also the Flower
Show and the Dog Show.
- but we had a go! It was
an exhausting month for
everyone involved- but great
fun.
At the end of September you
will have received a small gift
to celebrate our benefactor’s
birthday, an annual event
that William Whiteley had
written into his will. What a
great idea as we get older -
to give gifts on our birthdays
rather than receive them!
We reckon that the thank
you letters and appreciation
we’d get from family and
friends would be just like
another birthday!
Along with all the photos
and fun items this month
please note important advice
(p6) about Pension Credits.
New 2013 Guest House
Prices are on p8 - it’s always
good to book early if your
family or friends are visiting
- the rates will still represent
remarkable value for the area.
Finally, our grateful thanks
to all those contributors,
who got their articles to us
early this month. Hazel and
Heather.
The Warden
Writes
am always very wary
I about using the magazine
to “berate” village residents
because it is “a blunt
instrument” that cannot be
accurately aimed but I’m
afraid that this is one such
occasion. Th e problem I wish
to raise only stems from the
actions of a small number of
people, but it raises a general
policy that needs to be
understood by everybody.
Th e subject is the behaviour
of some residents towards
staff . As you would have seen
in many large organisations
such as hospitals, railway
stations and so on there are
notices up saying that “abuse
of staff is not tolerated”. Th e
same applies within Whiteley
Village, but there have been
some examples of residents
behaving very inappropriately
towards staff . In eff ect they
have taken to bullying the
staff .
Th ere is never any situation
in which it is acceptable to
be rude or aggressive towards
a member of staff . Being
aggressive includes raising
your voice or gesticulating
wildly towards them or
just standing too close so
that they are intimidated.
Th ere are always means
of raising complaints or
bringing dissatisfaction to
the attention of the Trust and
none of them involve such
aggressive behaviour.
If you have a complaint
about an individual member
of staff you should take your
complaint to the Head of
Department. And if you
don’t know who they are then
the Offi ce or my PA ( Julie)
will be able to advise you.
Our policy is simple: We
believe everyone has a right
to be treated with respect and
courtesy. be they members of
staff , villagers or visitors. We
reserve the right to take the
appropriate action against
those who are not prepared
to behave in a reasonable
manner, particularly towards
staff .
As I say, there are only a few
who breach this policy and I
am sure that you are not one
of them but, if you are, no
more please.
Turning to more cheerful
and upbeat matters, there
is much in this edition on
Activities Week. I take
this opportunity to thank
everyone who made it
possible and everyone who
joined in with the activities.
However, I must highlight
the contributions of Vanetia
and Kelly who were tireless
balls of fun and energy both
beforehand in coming up
with the ideas and setting
up the whole week, but even
more so during the week -
thank you, ladies and I hope
that you have now recovered!
Continuing the upward
trend, also mentioned
elsewhere are the
celebrations of Founder’s
Day. I hope that you enjoy
the lovely Founder’s Day
gifts and my congratulations
go to the two cup winners
who will be announced and
have their cups awarded by
the Chair of Trustees on
Sunday 30 th September.
Ending on an even more
happy matter, by the time
you read this Hazel, our
erstwhile chaplain and editor
of the magazine will have
been married to James. We
wish them a long and happy
life together. Mike Roycroft
The Paralympics were brilliant
- and I was there
As I write this, the summer
seems to have come to an
abrupt end. Not only has
the brief bout of warm
September weather been
and gone, but Coldplay are
entertaining the crowds as
they bring down the fi nal
curtain on what has been a
very successful summer of
Olympic activity.
My applications for Olympic
tickets met with only limited
success, as I only succeeded
in getting tickets for a
football match. Disappointed
at my eff orts, my wife, Esma,
made her own attempts at
securing tickets to an event at
the main Olympic Stadium,
eff orts that resulted in us
both attending a paralympic
session. What an eye opener!
Th e eff orts of the many
athletes we witnessed really
do make one question
whether our spoilt and
overpaid professional
footballers deserve the
attention they receive.
Amongst the many very
watchable activities, the most
impressive displays I saw
have to have been the F12
Long-jump (for the blind).
With many athletes clearing
six metres, they were far,
far better than I was in my
prime, although I reckon
my landings were the more
graceful ;-) Th e dangers of
this event were not restricted
solely to the athletes, as
the take-off judge and the
coaches, who gave vocal
directions, all ran the risk of
being involved in a collision.
I am sure I speak for most
in saying the London 2012
event made me proud to be
British. Paul Martin
Wanted You
to Celebrate
his Birthday
Some of you may have heard
that a descendant of William
Whiteley paid a visit to the
Village recently. Th is was of
course a timely visit, in that
we celebrate Founder’s Day
at the end of September each
year.
One of the year’s biggest
challenges is to fi nd a
suitable gift to meet the
Founder’s wish that you are
all presented with a little
something to mark the
occasion. Shopping bags,
diaries, torches, diaries,
manicure sets, diaries,
umbrellas, diaries, calendars,
and even the odd diary have
all been delivered over the
years.
I was tempted to source the
fi rm favourite, safe in the
knowledge that the other
diaries you have are now out
of date, but eventually opted
for something diff erent. I
hope you all welcome this
year’s little gift (there will
be a small number of extra
examples available if you
would like to purchase a
second set). PM
Are You Receiving Pension Credit?
Welfare Manager Barbara Collins advises on two types of
Pension Credit and guides you through the system
Some of you may be in
receipt of Pension Credit. If
you are, you need to know
that there are two types.
One is “Savings Credit” and
the other is “Guaranteed
Credit” – and there is a
huge diff erence between
these two benefi ts. It is
really important for you to
understand the signifi cance
of this diff erence.
GUARANTEED CREDIT
“Guaranteed Credit” is
the amount by which the
Department for Work and
Pensions (DWP) will topup
your income to bring it
up to the minimum amount
that the Government thinks
you need to live on. If you
receive this type of Pension
Credit, it does not count as
income when assessing you
for other benefi ts, and you
will automatically be entitled
to full housing benefi t and
full council tax benefi t, as
well as various other forms
of assistance. Guaranteed
Credit is the benefi t that
most people associate with
the term “pension credit” and
there is a tendency to use the
terms interchangeably.
SAVINGS CREDIT
“Savings Credit” does count
as income when assessing
you for other benefi ts. It
does not automatically entitle
you to any other benefi ts. In
many ways, it is a great pity
that the DWP included this
benefi t as a part of Pension
Credit, instead of making it
an entirely separate benefi t,
with a completely diff erent
name.
YOU ARE EXPECTED
TO TELL THE
COUNCIL OF
CHANGES
Some of you may have
been in receipt of both
Guaranteed Credit and
Savings Credit. Please
check if this is still the
case. If you lose Guaranteed
Credit for any reason, this
could mean that you are
entitled to less housing and
council tax benefi t than you
were receiving before – and
you are expected to notify
the Council of this change.
If you don’t do so, this could
result in an overpayment of
benefi ts, which the Council
will try to recover from you
when it becomes aware of the
situation.
Unfortunately, the letters
from the Pension Service
are not always as clear
as they could be about
the signifi cance of losing
Guaranteed Credit and what
you need to notify the Council
about.
HAPPY TO HELP
If you used to receive both
Guaranteed Credit and
Savings Credit, but are now
only receiving Savings Credit,
you are welcome to get in
touch with me and I will
be happy to do a “benefi ts
assessment” for you and off er
you advice on how to deal with
this change in your situation.
I am also happy to do a
“benefi ts assessment” for any
other Villager who would like
to have this done. Barbara
Collins, Welfare Manager
Estate
Clippings
On 11 th September my staff
and I had the pleasure of
guiding 30 Villagers and staff
around some of the grounds
for a walk and talk. Th is took
us on quite a lengthy trail
around the Estate woodlands.
Th e walk started at the back
of the Village Club and took
us through the arboretum,
past the Summerhouse and
down into the depths of the
woods.
I was delighted to have the
opportunity to explain exactly
what we do with regards to
the work which not many
residents see. Th is included
the reinstatement of forest
rides which had previously
been overgrown, conservation
measures for badgers
and owls and the careful
management of derelict areas
of woodland. Th e walk itself
took an hour and a half to
complete and by the end of
it my voice was beginning to
suff er. I hope that those who
attended found it enjoyable
and informative. I will run
another one later in the year
and let you all know when
this has been organised.
Now the grass has begun
to slow its growth we will
soon continue with the path
upgrades. I am hoping to
have this completed as soon
as I can. Th is will enable
those of you with buggies to
access the woodlands a lot
more freely. With any luck
these upgrades will be ready
for the next walk and talk.
eBay Sale of Treasures
As mentioned last month,
we have opened an account
for Whiteley Village on the
auction site eBay, and will
launch our fi rst sale of items
on Monday 15 th October.
You’re welcome to donate
further items to the sale (the
criteria for inclusion is simply
“could this raise more online
than it would in the Village
charity shop?”) and we hope
to hold many more sales in
the months ahead.
Th e Auction Lots for our
fi rst sale include a silverplated
Ianthe rose bowl;
a Beswick “Connoisseur”
Alsatian fi gurine; “Th e
Living Bible” boxed set of 12
Sir Laurence Olivier spoken
16mm Coronet camera; a
boxed set of (Edwardian?)
shirt buttons; a pair of wood-
framed embossed metal
plaques; a Weatherby Royal
Falcon 6” plate, painted
with a pair of spaniels; a
Portmeirion Porcelain vase
(white, 7” high) and a very
Alms Race
Th e Trustees have backed the
idea of staging a fundraising
event in Whiteley Village
next year (probably in June),
to be called Th e Alms Race.
Th e event will be a crosscountry
fun/obstacle race,
designed to make the most
of our wonderful woodland
surroundings but also routed
to run the runners ragged
round the Octagon Road.
“Age is no barrier”, they
say – even if a water jump
might be – so why not think
of entering (individuals or
teams of up to four people)
and test your best against the
rest.
Th e Alms Race should be
a wonderful opportunity to
help explain the meaning
of the word “alms” and thus
convey what an almshouse
charity is all about. We would
welcome enquiries from any
individual or business with
an interest in sponsoring this
unique event.
very good news regarding the
funding we need to convert
The Peace and Hope Trust gets much needed
help from Our Care Centre
Although we are a charity
ourselves, we have
been privileged to be able
to support another charity,
overseas, this month!
In 1990, after ten years of
civil strife, the Peace and
Hope Trust was invited by
President Violeta Chamorro,
President of Nicaragua, to
support the programme
of reconstruction and
reconciliation. Since then,
PHT has continued working
in Nicaragua through a range
of initiatives designed to
improve the lives of some
of the most disadvantaged
people on the planet.
Th e charitable Trust is very
pleased to accept any surplus
medical equipment for the
hospitals. Th ey fundraise for
a large container which is
fi lled with these items and
sent out, directly under their
supervision, to the hospitals.
Brighten
Someone’s Day
Th e Care Centre is always
pleased to welcome new
volunteers to help with
activities or chat to residents.
Please ask at Whiteley House
Reception to arrange a
preliminary visit.
Pictured: Matron Hilary Harding with some of the Hope Trust
helpers as they collect beds for Nicaragua.
On a recent visit to a
fundraising stall in Ross on
Wye, I saw pictures of the
beds that hospital patients,
young and old, are sleeping
on; ripped mattresses and
rusty old beds are the norm.
I immediately realised that,
as we have a plan to replace
our beds in the Care Centre
with electric profi ling beds,
for our residents’ ultimate
comfort, we could send our
old hospital beds to be used
for a good cause, instead
of going for scrap. Mike
Gibbons, CEO for the Trust
brought his van up and has
collected beds, mattresses,
old uniforms and other old
equipment from the Care
Centre and Huntley House
to go out to Nicaragua on the
next container.
Lorraine Russell
retires and heads for
Australia
We will be saying farewell to
two key members of staff in
the next couple of months,
both who have worked here
for many years.
Lorraine, our Training
Manager for the Village, is
retiring and heading off for
a year of travelling around
Australia with her husband.
We wish her all the best with
this adventure and say a big
Th ank You for all she has
done for not only the Care
Centre but for all the staff
in the Village to ensure we
have received the required
training. Lorraine has been
a very valuable and highly
respected member of the
team here. I am sure many
of the staff will be thanking
her individually for the
part she has played in their
personal development and
encouragement in their
various positions. She also
has another very important
job! Lorraine has been
responsible for cleaning out
our fi sh tank every week in
A Golden Afternoon at the ‘Pictures’
Residents of Whiteley House and other Villagers enjoyed the
fi lm afternoon organised by Vanetia and Kelly as part of the
Village Activities Week. Th e fi lm, ‘Th e Best Exotic Marigold
Hotel’, was very amusing and they enjoyed eating popcorn
and choc ices - a real cinema experience!
Pictured from left to right:
there is anyone
out there who
has an interest
in looking after
fi sh, please do
feel free to off er your services!!
Susan Clancy is also
retiring - but we’ll still
see her
Susan Clancy, Manager of
Ingram House, is also going
into semi-retirement. She
will continue to work on our
bank but feels it is time for
a change from the full time
commitment. I think this may
have something to do with a
new addition to the family, a
lovely springer spaniel puppy
called Millie!
Susan has shown great passion
and a deep caring attitude
for the residents and staff
in Ingram House and is
very highly respected by all,
especially the residents and
relatives of our residents.
Ladies’ Lunch
I have been asked by several
of the ladies in the Village
when the next Ladies’ Lunch
will be. I will be arranging one
soon, details in next month’s
magazine. Hilary Harding
Some of My Favourite Sayings
I love to collect sayings,
things like: “Today’s mighty
oak is just yesterday’s nut
that held its ground.” I have
friends who send me sayings
that they read or hear and my
collection grows and grows.
Some of these sayings make
me laugh and some make me
realise that I sometimes take
life too seriously, while others
often speak of a situation I
fi nd myself in and help me to
think it through.
Th is last month friends have
come to visit while going or
coming back from holidays
(it’s one of the joys of living
near the airports) and they
have brought me sayings
which have come from their
holidays or books they have
been reading while travelling.
From the book ‘Sacred Space’,
a book about fi nding God in
life:
“You have a lesson for us
(God), we do not learn it if
we simply circle the wagons
and defend the way we have
always been.”
From a plaque in a
remembrance garden in
Jerusalem:
“While it is easier to throw
rocks, building memorials
out of them is more
constructive.”
Heard by a friend in Spain:
“Life isn’t about how to
survive the storm but how to
dance in the rain.”
But the one that made me
laugh as it was sent by a
friend who is over 90 and
she may have been thinking
about me when she sent it,
“Better to keep your mouth
closed and be thought stupid,
than to open it and remove
all doubt” (thanks Pam)
Sayings, whether they are
used in the family, the
culture or by individuals can
remind us of people, places
and shared times of joy or of
sorrow; they can, as I often
fi nd, make you laugh or help
you refl ect.
I would love to hear some of
the sayings you use or those
you hear or read and perhaps
one day I will write a book
to share the best ones with
everyone. Rev Terrie
Animal Service
4th October at 3pm
in St Mark’s Church
Th is service will be a time
when we as a community
can come together with
our pets to thank God for
the companionship of all
creatures.
We are holding it on the
feast of St Francis of Assisi
who was the founder of the
Franciscan order. Brother
Ramon, an Anglican
Franciscan friar, said that
“Franciscan spirituality
is marked by spontaneity
and emotional freedom, by
openness to every human
being and love for nature. It
is rooted in a biblical faith
and in reverence for the
whole of creation”
My dogs certainly bring
spontaneity, openness to
people and love in all they
do, and I expect everyone can
share stories of times when
the wonders of the created
order has led us to stand in
awe at the wonder of God.
Th e service is open to
everyone, with or without
a pet, and will be a simple
service of praise and
thanksgiving with a time to
share fellowship over a cup of
tea afterwards.
All Souls Service
4th November
at 3:00pm
in St Mark’s
Church
A few months ago one of the
ladies in Whiteley House
said to me that she was sad
because she never hears her
husband’s name said any
more. It got me thinking
about how we honour and
remember those who have
died and how we keep their
memories alive.
All Souls is traditionally a
time in the church’s year
when services of memorial
are held for those who we
have loved but see no longer,
it’s a time to come together
to remember them and to
hear their name said out loud
as we light candles and give
thanks for them.
Th e service will be a quiet
refl ective service when we
will listen to contemporary
music played on CDs, we
will say prayers, sing hymns
and light candles for those
who we come to remember.
I will put up lists in the
Shop, Huntley, Ingram and
Whiteley Houses as well as
in church to collect names
of those who people want to
remember.
It will be lovely if you and
your families come to share
in this service.If you need
a lift to the service then
please let me know and I will
arrange one for you. Rev
Village Flower Show
Despite worries at the
beginning of the week with
lack of entries coming in,
the Show on Saturday was
quite a success. It was nice to
see new Villagers had made
the eff ort to enter and had
actually won fi rst prizes and
others. Th e judges were very
impressed by the standard
of the entries; there were
some mistakes, but that was
put down to lack of
experience and in
most cases adjusted
by myself, Bill or
the Stewards. Th at
is why we only
have it as a Village
Show and not for
outsiders, because
then it becomes a
diff erent ballgame
altogether.
Bill and I were very
impressed with the eff ort
people had made with their
entries. Well done everyone,
we now hope you will be
inspired and more of you
will have a go, particularly
with growing vegetables and
fruit on the allotments, if you
have one, but you can also
grow veg etc. in pots on the
patio. Th e fl owers around
your gardens can also be
entered if you think they are
good enough. Th e schedule
for 2013 does not come out
until February/March, but
all fl owers, pot plants, fruit,
vegetables stay the same.
Th e Classes changed are
Domestic, Flower Arranging
and Children’s each year. So
if you have lost your 2012
schedule and need to know
what to plant for next year,
Hi de Hi! It’s Whiteley Village Holiday Camp
Fun and Games at our Annual Activities Week
Activities Week in its various
guises has always been
blessed with more than its
fair share of June sunshine.
It was therefore with some
trepidation that Kelly and
Vanetia, like all parents
working to a tight budget,
booked an ‘out of season’
visit to the Whiteley Village
Holiday Camp for the week
in September that coincided
with the start of the school
term. Th ey need not have
worried, as a brief Indian
Summer ensured that all
events went ahead in warm
and dry conditions.
Th e Holiday Camp theme
was probably best portrayed
on the Th ursday, when Th e
Green was transformed into
a seaside location, complete
with donkeys, sand, and
candyfl oss. It could be
argued that, whilst good, the
pre-planned entertainment
provided by a Clown
workshop was surpassed
by the hula-hoop skills of
the Warden. Rumour has it
he has already been signed
up for the next series of
Britain’s got Talent. It was
also pleasing to see the event
receiving the
full support of
our Accounts
Department,
who were
handing out
popcorn and
jellied eels
instead of the
usual bills and invoices.
A blast from the past for
many was the ‘Punch & Judy
Show’ where the Professor
managed to deliver adult
entertainment (as was the
norm in the origins of
such shows). Although the
entertainer is traditionally
called Th e Professor, “Th e
Octopus” might be a far more
appropriate name… as he
appeared to be capable of
operating six or more glove
puppets at any one time.
It was also pleasing to see
the local Girl-Guides join
in once again, leading an
evening of “sausage sizzle
and campfi re sing-a-long”,
which was then immediately
followed by a far more
boisterous session from the
visiting Morris Men.
Of course, as with all
Holiday Camp entertainment
schedules, the calendar
included a good number of
competitions; Bob Howard
as Mr Whiteley Village and
Pearl Wilkinson as Mrs
Whiteley Village, deserve
special mention. As does Les
Powell who showed how
versatile he is with a club by
winning the crazy golf event.
I believe the Village versus
Police “Snooker and Darts
Challenge Match” ended
in a very diplomatic draw,
whilst the winning quiz team
consisted of both Police and
staff .
Th anking individuals is
always fraught with danger,
as invariably important
names get left out. However,
whilst many supported the
events, I would like to single
out John and Bernice Elson,
Graham and Lea Chapman,
and George and Gwen
Twilley, Peggy Ruff and Pat
Smythe, who appeared to be
at just about everything. Also
worthy of mention were
the residents of Huntley
House, who turned up in
numbers throughout.
Finally, I am sure I speak
for everyone in saying a
big WELL DONE! to
Kelly and Vanetia. Th ey
put in many unpaid
hours in preparing
for and delivering the
event, and a second
place in the quiz (with
the accompanying box
of toff ees) was hardly
adequate reward. Paul
We were pleased that
We would especially like to
this as a big thank you to
Ian, Matt and Lewis for
Extra special thanks must go
to Pat Hawes and Huntley
drove the bus for us to ensure
as many people as possible
could get to the various
events. Finally, Bernice
who managed to make our
Th e eff ort and wonderful
all was fantastic (I had
was so much to enjoy and
to have made everyone
was above and beyond
A Reply to ‘Cats as part of
the Village’
I do so hope that the ‘no cats’
rule is about to be changed.
So many times I have heard
“I wish I could have a cat!”
Why not? Cats are far more
delicate in their habits than
dogs, or foxes, or deer, or
squirrels. Th ey would help to
keep the rodent population at
bay – and maybe the rabbits.
But most importantly a cat
is a warm, living, loving
companion, independent by
nature, making few demands,
helping to make a house a
home. Beautiful to look at,
can we not give them a try?
Th ink what we are missing
– after all ‘God made cats
so that we might have the
pleasure of stroking a tiger.’
(Of course, there would be
complaints – but cats and
their owners could rise above
that.) Sister Kate Coombes
and Chips Supper. Th is was
without any question the
most enjoyable night we have
spent in the year since we
came to Whiteley Village.
It was such a pity that more
people did not turn out. To
hear the excuse “We can
get fi sh and chips for £2
less at lunch time” is really
exasperating. We had a disco,
fancy dress, dancing all for
only £2 more than a fi sh
dinner. Tell me anywhere
else you can get an evening’s
Tea on the afternoon of
certainly a lot of chatting
going on judging by the
noise! It was good to see
some of those in our section
A Popular
Misconception
about Bowling...
... is that it’s ‘a game for old
people!’ Anyone thinking of
taking it up might be told (as
I was) “Surely you’re not old
enough for that yet!”
Do not be deceived! Having
tried it, under the expert
eye of Kate Haywood, I can
confi rm that Bowling ‘ain’t
for Cissies’ (to paraphrase
Mae West). It takes a degree
of fl exibility and balance (all
that bending and stretching),
a keen eye for placing
the wood (the ball) some
distance away, a competitive
instinct for strategy... and a
strong right (or left) arm. It
certainly keeps you fi t.
Dare you take up the
challenge and have a go? It
doesn’t matter if you have
never played before, there is
always someone willing to
teach you.
As Roy Corke says in
the Bowling Club article
overleaf, there is something
very charming and oldworldly
about a Bowling
team, in their whites,
competing on a summer’s
afternoon. In the winter, of
course, there’s indoor bowling
in the hall - why not pop
along and have a look? Hazel
allotments
Th ey do say, “better late than
never”. I’m not entirely
convinced, but it is true
that the good weather has
appeared, even though it has
only arrived in time to start
planning next year’s harvest!
Soon our plots will be cleared
of everything but the winter
vegetables. For many of us,
this is a time for a re-think
about what to grow and
where to grow it.
Th ere will be no need to
order seed catalogues – they
arrive uninvited in what
appear to be truckloads.
If you have been thinking
about taking on a plot, not
only to enjoy the fruits of
your labour, but also to share
in the camaraderie with other
plot holders, now is a good
were sometimes nail-bitingly
good; the outcome of a
the fi nal bowl.
On Saturday, in all that
heat, Don Bale won both
his games! Sunday morning,
Dave Wood won his match,
then, in the afternoon, the
Over the last few years
we have had our numbers
It is time to invite any person
As the August meeting
had been cancelled due to
Olympic pressure, it meant
our September meeting was
extra busy.
High on the agenda was
our AGM which kicked
off with an annual review
of the year outlining the
various activities for the club.
Th is led to a discussion on
delegation of duties designed
to get more members
involved with running the
club. Greater involvement by
club members in formulating
the coming year’s programme
would lead to more eager
participation in its execution.
Th is in turn led to a general
surge in interest, not only
to keep the club going but
construct a programme
which would fulfi l members’
needs.
Meanwhile Cliff was
studying the prints set up
for the second phase of
our competition entitled
‘Metal’. As usual there was an
interesting variety of objects
photographed from various
angles. After awarding the
marks, Cliff off ered helpful
suggestions for improvement,
but he said the general
standard was improving all
the time.
Our third and fi nal stage
for this year’s competition
is entitled ‘Anything from
Anywhere, at Anytime!’
Th is means we can submit
4 photographs (of which 3
will be judged) of any subject
taken at any time in the past.
Plenty of scope there, then!
At our next meeting on
Wednesday 3 rd October,
we look forward to seeing
recent overseas travels with
subsequent discussion. Th is
date most convenient. Th ere
will be a list put up outside
the Village Shop on the
WVPC notice board with
a menu. Please enter your
name and menu choice so
I can inform the caterers
in good time. Th e cost per
person will be £11.50 instead
of the £13.95 quoted by
Caterplus as we are receiving
our 10% discount for
booking early.
I look forward at this early
stage to seeing not only
regular members but also to
welcoming new members. I
can assure you, you will not
be disappointed.
Indoor Putting will take
place in the Village Hall
every Friday, commencing
play at 1:45pm and fi nishing
at 3:45. Th e earlier start is
to accommodate another
outside booking in the
Hall, which of course helps
to generate money for
maintenance of the Hall.
Michael Barker
Royal British
Legion
Although a number of people
were on holiday we still had
37 members attending our
September meeting. We
wish Dave Griffi n a speedy
recovery from his operation,
and also all members who are
not so well at this time.
On 21st September we took
thirty-six people to visit
Bletchley Park, the wartime
decoding centre where
several Villagers worked
during those years. It was a
worthwhile and fascinating
outing - and very topical as
a TV drama series has just
been made about it.
ANNUAL BALL
We still have some places for
the Annual Ball available,
but if you would like to
come, I need to know before
6 th October please. I will
also be looking for help to
decorate the hall on 19 th /20 th
October.
Th e list for offi cer
appointments for the branch
is now closed and elections
will take place at our AGM
in November.
SUPPORT OUR SERVICE
MEN AND WOMEN
We will be making a
collection for Headley
Court at our November
meeting and the monies
raised will be used for
Christmas gifts.
DRMC (Defence Medical
Rehabilitation Centre)
Headley Court is a specialist
multi-purpose centre that
focuses on the rehabilitation
of severely injured service
personnel, including polytrauma
amputees and
personnel suff ering from Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder.
You may have seen television
and media coverage recently
when the Prince of Wales
and the Duchess of Cornwall
visited the centre and met
some of the courageous
people being helped there.
BEATING RETREAT
Th e Beating Retreat event
was a great success and the
Villagers, who sat out on
Th e Green to watch it, really
enjoyed themselves. Our
thanks to Tony Ward for
bringing it to the Village.
NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will be
on Monday 8 th October
at 10.00 for 10.30hrs. All
are welcome. Bill McMinn,
Chairman
seekers
Th is term Th e Seekers will
Baptist Minister. Newcomers
are welcome to join. For
story club
Story Club has started up
again with two new members
who are very welcome. We
have decided that to keep
the enthusiasm going we will
meet every other Wednesday
at 3 West Avenue. Th e lady
who phoned and left her
number which I lost has not
tried again. I do hope she
will. Meetings in October -
Wednesday 3 rd , 17 th and 31 st
at 2pm. Hope to see you all
then. Jill Flaherty
A couple were going out for
the evening. Th ey got really
dolled up, cat put out etc,
etc…
Th e taxi arrives and as the
couple go out the cat shoots
back in. Th ey don’t want
the cat shut in the house,
so the wife goes out to the
taxi while the husband goes
upstairs to chase the cat out.
Th e wife, not wanting it
known that the house would
be empty, explains to the
taxi driver, “He’s just going
upstairs to say goodbye to my
mother.”
A few minutes later, the
Last Word
husband returns and gets
into the taxi. “Sorry I took so
long, the stupid old thing was
hiding under the bed and I
had to poke her with a coat
hanger to get her out.”
Th e taxi driver’s face was a
study!
