Editorial
Heather and I would like to
take this opportunity to thank
the many people who have
contributed to the magazine
over the last year. We are
particularly grateful to the club
secretaries who manage to get
their articles in so promptly,
and to the hard working
photographers. Special thanks
also go to Jim Buckley for the
work he does in getting photos
ready for printing.
An ailing print machine is
proving increasingly unreliable
in reproducing photos and we
know how disappointing that
can be for the photographers.
Th e engineers, now frequent
visitors to the Village, were
surprised to fi nd that the
machine was working at all,
as it has produced more than
a million prints - mostly
magazine! Th e Trust is
looking at ways of improving
production in the future but
until then, please bear with us
- and keep those photos and
articles coming.
Th ere are a number of new
initiatives in the Village for
2013 ranging from the opening
of a small shop in Huntley
House to a new club and a
monthly treat for classical
music fans. It’s all in these
pages.
May all your wishes for 2013 be
granted. Hazel and Heather
Blessed are those who
can laugh at themselves
for they shall never
cease to be amused.
January 2013 Whiteley Villager 3

The Warden
Writes
Our cover photo of Ivy
Gosden and Santa sums
up much that is good about
this wonderful time of year in
Whiteley Village. Santa was a
great hit at the Drop In as party
goers forgot the years, donned
paper hats and joined in the
festive fun.
To Santa, and to all the staff
and Villagers who ‘went the
extra mile’ I would like to say a
heartfelt thank you on behalf of
us all. I know that I mentioned
last month the work that
was going on for Christmas,
and some might dismiss staff
eff orts as “only being their
job”, but the reality is that a
great deal of thought and love
goes into making the season
special. I am aware that for
some Villagers, Christmas can
be a diffi cult time coping with
failing health or sad memories
of loved ones and Christmases
past but a huge, unseen eff ort
is put in by many staff and
caring Villagers to help their
neighbours through this time.
It seems, to me at least, that
the Christmas events in the
Village go from strength to
strength and some of them this
year were the best we’ve ever
had. Th ank you to everyone,
organisers and helpers alike,
who helped to make them so
good.
Christmas is, of course, a time
for giving, and for receiving. Th e
Trustees and staff , and certainly
Carole Ann and I, would like to
thank those Villagers who sent
us Christmas and New Year
greetings. It is always good to
feel valued, but it does bring me
to the delicate subject of gifts
for staff .
Some of you are perhaps not
aware of the Trust policy of not
permitting staff to receive gifts
from Villagers or their families
at any time, as they can be so
easily misconstrued. In the past
we have turned a blind eye to
the occasional box of toff ees or
biscuits as the sentiments such
gifts expressed were readily
appreciated.
However, this year we were
quite overwhelmed with the
generosity of some of the
gifts off ered and, as refusal
can so easily off end, it became
quite awkward on at least one
occasion. Th ere is clearly a
balance to be struck and we
will have to be fi rmer in future.
Meanwhile, if you are feeling
especially grateful to a member
of staff for help given, why not
simply write a thank you card?
You would be surprised how
much a few words are valued
and the embarrassment of
refusing a gift is easily avoided.
LIVING HISTORY
Even in Whiteley Village,
where longevity of individuals
and marriages is often taken
for granted, Mr and Mrs
Twilley, George and Gwen, are
remarkable. Th ey have recently
celebrated their Blue Sapphire
anniversary. Th at is an amazing
65 years of marriage. Elsewhere
in the magazine Mr Twilley
has described how they met
and the role of the Second
World War in their story. His
wife was a Wren (Gwen the
Wren, it was made to be!) who
met Eisenhower, Churchill
and Monty… but enough
from me, read their article. It
reinforces how remarkable are
the experiences of our residents
and how important it is that we
capture some of them before
the memories fade. I have
mentioned before an initiative
to record Villager life histories
for posterity through our
museum. If you would like to
have your story included please
contact Richard Exworthy.
Staying with that link, I
understand that, following
on from Richard’s article last
month, some hardy folk have
volunteered to undertake
sponsored parachute jumps
for the Trust. All I can say is
– I salute you! Having had my
undercarriage sorted out once
(a new knee!), I do not intend
to tempt fate by joining you.
However, I will be cheering you
on, but with both feet fi rmly on
the ground!
A very happy and healthy New
Year to everyone - see you in
2013! Mike Roycroft
An Appreciative
Look Back at
the Last Days
of 2012
One of the quirks of magazine
deadlines is that I am having
to write this during an icy, subzero,
pre-Christmas afternoon,
whilst with any luck you will
be reading the words during
a January ‘Indian Summer’
(… but maybe not). Anyway I
wanted to take this opportunity
to wish everyone the best for
2013.
It is also a good opportunity
to thank a few people for their
eff orts during December:
Th e Support Workers, Kelly
and Vanetia did a grand job
in putting on the “Dropin
Christmas Party”, even
persuading our local ‘Bodie and
Doyle’ who were in attendance
to forego their usual blue
uniforms in favour of bright red
cloaks and white whiskers.
Th e Villagers’ Christmas
Party on 13 th December was
probably the best for many
years. A big thank you to Roy
Hone for undertaking much
of the organisational work that
goes on behind the scenes.
Hopefully, everyone will now
understand that with numbers
restricted to 120 it is important
to book your ticket to any
social event well in advance. I
think Dionne, Patsy, and Th eo
from Caterplus also deserve a
mention for delivering such a
good spread on the night.
Finally, and moving away
from the December focus, I
would like to publically thank
Bedroom Tax, and other
methods of separating
a man from his money, have
been much talked about in
the media in recent weeks.
Earlier in the year there was
the same type of speculation
about whether Housing
Benefi t would be scrapped.
Th e problem is often that the
anxiety provoking questions
are being asked well in
advance of government
providing us with answers.
I now feel comfortable
enough with the information
available to be able to allay
some of the anxieties that may
be out there:
For the year commencing 1 st
April 2013 it is expected that
the Housing Benefi t criteria,
as far as it relates to those
living in our cottages or in
Huntley House, will remain
broadly unaltered. If you
currently receive full Housing
Benefi t you should continue
to do so. If you do happen
Benefi ts Update
two gentlemen who have been
invaluable to the Village during
2012. Peter Aldhouse, has been
a real friend to the Activities
Centre users, giving of his time
every week to ensure the place
is clean and tidy. John Elson
has similarly given his time to
help support the shuttle bus
service, and particularly to drive
the regular Tuesday service to
Brooklands.
Happy New Year to all! Paul
Martin
to receive a letter telling you
otherwise then please make an
appointment to see someone
from the Welfare team as soon
as possible.
Th ere should be no one living
in our cottages who needs to
worry about the “bedroom tax”
– you live in a property that is
currently excluded from such
concepts.
You may also be aware that
assistance with Council Tax
is changing. Th e statement
made by Elmbridge Boroough
Council in mid-December
seems to confi rm that they are
fully behind the policy that
pensioners should be protected
from any change. Th erefore if
you currently pay no council
tax it is likely that this will
continue to be the case next
year.
I must qualify the above advice
by saying that it does not apply
to either staff housing or Coach
House Mews. Paul Martin
Getting Fund Raising Off to a
Good Start for the New Year
eBay for Whiteley Village
A number of kind people have
recently donated some truly
beautiful items to be sold on
eBay in aid of Whiteley Village.
Th e quality - and therefore the
likely value - of the donated
items suggest that we are right
to give e-Bay a try, but to
ensure that we really do get
the best return the sale process
needs a vigilant eye.
Is there a Villager with the
skills and experience of eBay
who would be happy to help
me with this? I would like to
get things moving as soon as
possible so please do have a
chat with me if you think this is
something you would like to be
involved with.
We had to be in it to win!
Just in time for Christmas,
Awards for All (aka Th e
National Lottery) have
confi rmed a grant of £10,000
to the Care Centre, which
will go towards the cost of
transforming an old courtyard
into an indoor sensory garden,
easily accessible by all. Read
more about this in Matron’s
article on Page 10.
Professor Mark Britton
Following the retirement of
Bill Biddell, who had served
Whiteley Village as a Trustee
for some 15 years or more,
Mark Britton has kindly agreed
to serve as the new Chairman
on the Trustees’ Fundraising
and Marketing Subcommittee.
Mark, who has some wonderful
experience in fundraising with
the Ashford and St Peter’s
Hospitals NHS Trust and the
British Lung Foundation, will
introduce himself more fully to
you in a future edition of this
magazine.
Mark is arranging a meeting in
the Village Hall to introduce
himself and talk about his wish
to see a Villager Fundraising
Committee - see Page 8.
Village…
A number of brave/crazy*
(delete as applicable!) people
have contacted me to enquire
about making a sponsored
Parachute Jump. It would be
great to have a large enough
group of people to organise
a jump solely for Whiteley
Village, and at a nearby
location. So, if you haven’t
made your New Year resolution
yet….?
Th e Weybridge Festival of
Running
I’m delighted to confi rm that
Th e Weybridge Festival of
Running will take place within
and around Whiteley Village
on Saturday 1 st June. In
the morning, there will
be a 5k or 10k road-andwoodland
race against
the clock (entry fees
will apply), whilst in the
afternoon sponsored
teams of runners will compete
in Th e Alms Race, a fun-run
meets obstacle-course. If your
running shoes won’t fi t you any
more, perhaps you could be a
volunteer helper on the day?
More information on this and
Estate
Clippings
I would like to wish everyone in
the Village a warm welcome to
the New Year. Th ere will be a
few changes in the department
and hopefully new staff to help
us in our tasks. Presently the
team is working on thinning
some neglected areas on the
estate which will improve not
only the visual aspects but
increase the variation of fl ora
and fauna living in the area.
Work on the woodland paths
will begin again shortly and
with any luck should be
completed by late spring. All
we can hope for is some drier
weather over the coming
months allowing us to continue
without producing too much
mud during the project.
Once again, please pass on any
requests for any work needed
during these cold months to
Lois or reception and we will
endeavour to get to them as
soon as possible. Ian Lansley,
Dodging the Dog Walkers Store Driving Miss
Daisy?
Th e population of Whiteley
Village has probably grown by
10% over the past 12 months, as
properties are refurbished and
re-occupied, and with the new
arrivals at Coach House Mews.
It seems that the number of
dogs has grown by an even
greater percentage (with a
signifi cant contribution from
Agnes and Rev Terrie).
Can I ask that dog owners who
are out walking their pets early
morning or late evening take
measures to make themselves
visible to car drivers. Th ere have
been several reports of ‘near
misses’ in recent weeks, with
drivers not having seen the dog
walker until the last moment.
A luminous jacket of the type
cyclists often wear or a torch
attached to your clothing might
be all that is required. But
hey, it is not just dog walkers,
anyone walking around the
Village after dark might want
to at least consider some light
coloured clothing. Paul Martin
Fundraising Meeting 16 th January
I was delighted to be asked a
few months ago to work with
the Whiteley Village Trustees
and lead the Subcommittee
responsible for Fundraising
and Marketing as it supports
Richard Exworthy in his work.
I would now like to explore the
possibility of forming a Village
Fundraising Committee. Th e
Committee would be open to
Residents of Whiteley Village,
their family and friends, and
other interested people, such
as our neighbours in Waltonon-Th
ames, Weybridge and
Hersham, local business-people,
sports clubs, etc. Th is new group
will be encouraged to organise
its own fundraising activities
and events – but also to help
make communication to and
from the Trustees easier and
clearer. Th e Trustees have plans
for a very exciting fundraising
event next year, to be held
in the grounds of Whiteley
Village, and we will need to
work together with you to get
the most out of it for everyone
concerned.
I have arranged that we can
meet for an open discussion
in the Village Hall on
Wednesday 16 th January.
Please arrive from 2pm for a
2:30pm start. Tea and coff ee
will be laid on. I hope to see a
good turn-out and look forward
to meeting you all.
Prof Mark Britton, Chair of
the F&M Subcommittee of the
A big thank you for all those
lovely cards from Villagers. We
do appreciate it.
Please keep your own
for every Villager who uses the
laundry, please make sure you
empty the lint tray and clean
inside the dryers. I am sure you
don’t want other people’s fl uff
on your clothes (especially since
they have just been washed) so
please extend the same courtesy
to others. Carol
Smokers – a
little reminder
Please could you
refrain from putting
cigarette ends into
the planters around
sorts of banking. (Th erefore you
don’t have to take the bus into
you are in touch 24/7), don’t get
caught having a red reminder
such as phone/electric. We will
happily make sure your bills are
paid without any admin fees.
Charity Shop Congratulations!
Th e volunteers who give of their time each week in the Charity
Shop can sometimes feel disheartened when their daily takings
appear small. It therefore seemed appropriate to highlight the
total for the past year, from November 2011 to November 2012.
You raised a whopping £3,144.07!!!!
Th is money all goes into the Welfare Fund for the benefi t of all
Villagers and is very much appreciated. Well done everybody - and
thank you to all those who donated goods during the year. Jenny
Have you popped in to visit the Charity Shop?
We have some excellent items for sale and are always glad of good
saying hello so why not call in?
Care Centre Celebrates Lottery Grant
We are going to start the
new year off with some good
fortune. Richard has been
working hard on securing a
Lottery Grant for £10.000 to
transform our courtyard garden
into a sensory garden for our
residents and we have just heard
that we have been granted this.
We have also been fundraising
as we need a total of about 13K
to complete the project.
We are so pleased that this
vision will become a reality. It
will be a sheltered area which
residents will be able to access
and enjoy.
New Year Factoids
Evidently you should not eat
lobster or chicken on New
Year’s Day as they can bring
you bad luck - lobsters move
backwards and chickens scratch
in reverse and it is believed
that eating them on New Year’s
Day might cause a reversal of
fortune!
Big Bingo for
Please join us for
a fun evening
40% to 45% of adults make one
or more resolutions each year.
Top ones are to lose weight,
exercise, quit smoking and
better money management, by
the second week of January
25% have abandoned their
resolutions!
And lastly in Italy people wear
red underwear on New Year’s
Day as a symbol of good luck
for the following year!! Hilary
Huntley House
Over the Christmas period
many residents and villagers
enjoyed the Musical Evening
held in our dining room, the
festive bingo, the Christmas
Carols followed by mulled wine
and mince pies in Huntley
House.
Nearly 80 people sat down for
Christmas Day lunch and the
festive feasts continued with
special lunches for Boxing Day
and New Year’s Day, with many
guests joining us for those too.
January naturally will be a
quiet month, however, our chef
is currently organising a Th ai
evening to take place on 26 th
January.
On behalf of myself and my
staff I would like to wish you
all a very Happy New Year and
prosperity for 2013. Agnes
A shop will be opening
in January in Huntley House
on a Monday morning (date
to be announced).
It would be appreciated
if Residents would add to
the form provided, any items
or groceries they would like
stocked.
We look forward to this
venture and meeting
Th e Deputy Facilities Manager
would like to remind cottage
residents that the Trust must
survey and agree locations for
satellite dishes prior to residents
ordering their services. Th ere
are strict restrictions on where
and how such equipment is
installed. Failure to contact may
result in the installation having
to be removed.
Th at’s the way to do it!
Please remember that the best
way to ensure that your job gets
done is to report it through
the Help Desk (that is a fancy
way of saying Lois!). We still
get many residents throwing
themselves in front of milk
fl oats to ask for work to be
done.
If you use the Help Desk
(01932 825825 or call in at
Centre Point between 09:30
-11:00 Monday to Friday) we
will give you a job number so
Peterbus to end in March -
Does this service cut aff ect you?
Th is week the Surrey Herald
carried the news that the
Peterbus service is to cease as
from the end of March 2013.
Th is service, which passed
through Hersham and Walton,
was a transport service intended
to take patients and visitors to
St Peter’s Hospital.
Th e reason given for the service
being pulled is one based upon
a lack of use, with the bus
typically carrying no more than
fi ve passengers. If this is indeed
the situation, then it makes
me even more disappointed
that you can chase us up if we
don’t turn up. If you are not
given a job number, please insist
on being given one.
Please sir can I have some
more?
We do not mind you asking the
hard working men who turn
up to fi x something to take a
look at another problem that is
annoying you if it is dangerous
or unsafe. In all other cases you
should report the additional
requests through the system
mentioned previously. Th is
helps us to track the type of
work we are doing and provide
the right people for the job.
Please help us to help you.
Th e Facilities Department wish
all Villagers and colleagues
a very happy New Year.
John Pollard, Facilities Manager
that my request last year for
the Peterbus to be re-routed
through Whiteley Village did
not even merit a reply!
It would be very useful to
know just how many Villagers
may suff er as a direct result
of this loss of service. If you
have used the Peterbus service
during 2012, either to attend an
appointment, visit someone in
hospital, or to access some other
point along the route, then
please drop me a note outlining
the details. Th ank you. Paul
New Year
Greeting
from Welfare
Department
I hope you have all enjoyed the
festivities over the Christmas
and New Year period, and
that full of good spirits (be
they liquid or otherwise) you
have made your New Year
resolutions - which for so many
of you will usually involve doing
things to make others’ lives
easier or happier.
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone
who called in to visit us last
month in our new Welfare
Offi ce. We really appreciated
all of your good wishes and
the many Christmas cards we
received. It is so very warming
to feel that love and aff ection,
and it really helps to make our
jobs feel both enjoyable and
worthwhile. Some of you also
gave us chocolates or biscuits,
which was very kind, but really
not necessary – and, when I
get on the scales in the early
New Year, I will probably regret
having enjoyed those particular
acts of kindness!
I know that 2012 will be a hard
act to follow – after all, the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and
the Olympics are over – but
hopefully 2013 will be a happy
year for everyone in Whiteley
Village. Th at is certainly my
New Year wish for you all.
Th e majority of my career
has been spent within an HR
attending zumba / salsa classes
and lyric and poem writing, I
also enjoy teaching children to
Th is month the Church will
be celebrating Epiphany, the
coming of the wise men to
visit the child Jesus. Epiphany
is about God being revealed
to the world and the people
of God beginning a new
journey with him. Th e wise
men followed a star which led
them to the place of a special
birth, God come to earth in
human form, the birth of Jesus
the Christ. Th e Wise Men, or
Magi came from the East to
witness and pay homage to the
child of their prophecy who
was to become a king of the
Jewish people. Th eir journey
would have been hard and full
of danger as they travelled at a
time of political and economic
unrest. Th e feast of Epiphany
comes at the end of the twelve
days of Christmas.
As we begin another year
together {2013} it’s good
to be reminded that life is a
journey through which we can
experience many wonders and
joys, but because it is a life
journey it will also inevitably
hold hardships and sorrows
Th e Journey of Life
as well. My mother used to
say “you cannot always live
in sunshine; it’s the rain that
makes the fl owers grow”. Life
will always have its ups and
downs, it is how you deal with
them and move on from them
which makes life happy or not.
When I look at the heavens I
see the vastness of the night
sky and I realise that I am just a
small part of the great wonder
which is the world our God has
given us.
Faith for each of us is a very
personal experience, and like
the Wise Men who travelled
seeking a king, all of us are
on a journey of exploration as
we fi nd the way of spiritual
awareness which is right for us.
As chaplain, I have the great
privilege to share stories and
experiences of diff erent people’s
journeys and in December Dee
Lockhart gave me a copy of her
personal faith testimony, which
she wrote in 1990, part of
which she has said I can share
with you.
“Faith in the universe
Twelve years ago Voyager 2
was launched on its journey
of exploration into space, and
what wonderful data it is now
beaming back. A brief fi fteen
years ago the outer planets were
unexplored, now, among others,
we “see” Jupiter, a quarter of
a billion miles away, and one
thousand fi ve hundred times
bigger than earth; not solid,
it is composed of gas which
is constantly in motion. A
comforting fact emerges when
we learn our sun still has about
fi ve billion years to go before all
its nuclear fuel is burnt up.
Far from causing my faith to
wobble, learning of all this new
knowledge make me feel like
letting my hair down, falling
on my knees and praising
God; and I echo the Psalmist,
“Th e heavens declare the glory
of God; and the fi rmament
sheweth his handywork”
(what stops me
is the fact that, in the
event, my nearest and
dearest would probably
phone the doctor and
have me carted off ).
And so once again
on the long road I
am travelling, I pick
myself up, dust myself
down” and rejoice! Our
redeemer lives. (Dee
Lockhart)”
Like the Wise Men
who journeyed
I know there are a number of
also brings extra concerns.
“What will happen to my pet,
if I am suddenly unable to care
Roy and I have recently signed
or long term fostering for pets
and generally help the elderly
to continue a relationship with
their much loved pet, even
Th e Kindness of Strangers at Christmas
was travelling to Wimbledon
I recently to stay with one of
my sons for a pre-Christmas
weekend. In a rush to get on
the train, I inadvertently left
my handbag on one of the seats
on the Platform. Of course it
contained my phone, cash for
the weekend, and the normal
very necessary ‘stuff ’ a woman
carries in her handbag!
However, I was lucky enough to
still have my ticket and Debit
Card in my hand after having
bought it at the machine. I
quickly got off at Hersham to
retrace my steps - but the next
train to Walton was going to be
an hour later and there was no
taxi rank.
In desperation I entered an
offi ce and begged help from a
Receptionist. Th e staff there
were wonderfully kind and
phoned for a taxi for me. But
in this technological age, I
couldn’t remember the mobile
number of my son who was
waiting at Wimbledon Station
for me - as that was in my
phone – in my bag!
Th e taxi driver was also very
kind and actually carried my
suitcase onto the platform
where the offi cials were really
helpful and polite, but said
there was no hope of retrieving
my bag as it was probably
already in a bin somewhere!
I eventually arrived at
Wimbledon, meeting my
son with the news that I had
been very foolish and lost my
handbag - to which he replied
that he already knew!
Whilst I had been trying to get
back to Walton, four pupils
from Selesian School had found
my handbag and contacted my
friends in Whiteley Village.
Luckily these friends had access
to my fl at and left me a quick
note with my handbag to give
the four youngsters names and
their school. My friends went
on to say they had given the
young people a lift home as
it was by then pouring with
rain. Th ey also knew my son
and had his mobile number (in
case I was ill), so were really
pleased to ring him and let him
know what had happened so he
would not be worried if I was
late.
Th e pupils who were so really
very kind are -
Rebecca Burgess, Tom Fox,
Chris Cawley and James
Pompei.
Th is is a heartfelt THANK
YOU to them for not only their
kindness, but their refusal to
accept a reward when it was
off ered.
I am now busy spreading the
word that teenagers these
days are not all bad as is often
discussed by the elderly. I am
really grateful to those four
pupils who have not only saved
me quite a bit of money but
also the hassle of cancelling
cards etc.
My best wishes for the New
Year go to them and also to the
railway staff and taxi driver who
were so kind to me. Patricia
Christmas
Party 2012
Th is year we cracked it, food
excellent, music suitable and
everyone seemed to enjoy
themselves.
Th e idea of charging £2.00
did solve the problem of nonattendance,
only seven missed
the evening compared to the
usual 30+ not turning up for
some reason or another and
food paid for wasted. Every
penny of the £2.00 charged
went on raffl e prizes.
Once again the team of Pauline
and Bill, Alan and Sheila, did a
superb job of laying tables and
making the Hall look inviting.
Sylvia always there to sort any
problems, thank you all for your
time, and thank
you to the people
who donated
prizes.
Th e food I think
deserves a special
mention because
I have on many
occasions had cause
to be unhappy but
I must congratulate
Dionne, Th eo
and the staff
of Caterplus.
Presentation,
quantity and above
all taste were
excellent.
Th ank you all for
supporting the party and thanks
to the Trust for paying the bill.
A Musical Wonderland
On Friday 30 th November
Whiteley Village residents
were given a preview of the
Elmbridge Youth Th eatre’s ‘A
Musical Wonderland’. Th is
is an excellent group of young
people whose combined talent
results in overall and individual
performances of the highest
standard.
Two outstanding performances
should be given special
mention. Kirsty Bottrall gave
a superb performance of Roxy
that any West End artiste
would fi nd enviable. Her
movement, timing and delivery
in this number was faultless.
To my mind she has all the
ingredients required to make a
successful professional artiste.
Th e same must be said of James
Stearn in his rendition of ‘I am
what I am’. Th is young man
raised the roof of the Village
Hall and the Villagers gave
him a thunderous applause. He
too has the talent and stage
presence of the professional
theatre.
Another outstanding
performance was given by the
young men of this group with
singing, dancing and acrobatic
input. Th e sheer power and
energy emanating from these
young men was electrifying.
Th is entire group must be
congratulated in their ability
to maintain such a high
standard when considering
the work and time given to its
Table
Tennis Club
production whilst at the same
time coping with the demands
of everybody’s life either at
school or a full time job.
Finally, one must congratulate
the director, producer and
musical backup team and all
those working back stage,
without whom a show of this
calibre would not have been
possible. Linda Roth
A Blue Sapphire (65th) Wedding Anniversary
for George and Gwen Twilley - Congratulations!
After I left school I trained
as a shoe maker and
repairer. When I joined the
Royal Marines in 1940, I was
attached to the Mobile Naval
Base Defence Organisation
1 (stores) in the shoe repair
workshop. I was based in Egypt
from1941 to1943 followed
by seven months in Ceylon.
In 1944, Mobile Naval Base
Defence Organisation 1, under
the command of Admiral
Ramsey, advanced through
Belgium, then Paris and fi nally
to Minden in Germany. (Th ey
were disbanded and absorbed
into the Marines at the end of
that year).
Gwen enlisted in the WRNS
in 1944 and was stationed at
Portsmouth. She was posted
to Southwick House as a
messenger and was there during
D Day. Th is meant that she had
to stand outside the map room
ready to run communications,
day and night, to the duty
offi cers who were based in huts
in the woods around the house.
She remembers that General
Eisenhower asked her if she
would like a chair and she
replied that she was not allowed
to sit on duty. She also said that
Winston Churchill was polite,
but General Montgomery did
not speak to her.
In 1945 Gwen was attached
to the Allied Naval Combined
Expeditionary Force (ANCXF)
which set up headquarters in
Minden so
Gwen and
I ended up
in the same
place. She
used to pop
in to the shoe
workshop with
a friend for
cups of tea as
we always had
the tea urn at
the ready. On
VJ Day there
was a party to
celebrate the
end of the war
and with some
encouragement
from Gwen’s
friend, we
fi nally spoke to
each other.
We kept in
touch after we
went back to England and once
we were demobbed we were
able to meet.We were married
in Southall in December 1947.
We have two daughters, one
grandson, three granddaughters
and one great-grandson.
For many years, I had my own
shoe repair shops in Hampton,
Middlesex and Gwen and I
worked together. Later, I had
various jobs and Gwen, who
was an excellent typist worked
as an offi ce supervisor.
We retired to Devon in 1997
and spent 13 happy years there,
but we decided we would like
to be nearer to our family and
were lucky enough to move to
Whiteley Village in 2010.
I played cricket for many years
and in later life Gwen and I
played bowls. We are not as
mobile now, but we join in with
as many activities as we can and
enjoy them all.
2012 has been an eventful
year for our family. In July, our
granddaughter Caroline and
her partner had a baby boy
– our fi rst great-grandchild.
In October our granddaughter
Naomi was married. By
coincidence, she met her
husband, who is Bavarian,
whilst working for a German
motor sport team. Th ey live
in Bavaria. Next April our
granddaughter, Suzie is to
marry.
For our Diamond Wedding
anniversary, the family arranged
for a private dinner in the
Admiral’s room on board HMS
Belfast. It was an unforgettable
evening. With so much else
happening in the family this
year, our 65 th Anniversary was
a lot quieter – lunch at the
Club Café- but we do intend
to celebrate our 70 th in style!
camera club
Th e 2012 programme drew to a
close with the fi nal round of the
Challenge Cup competition.
Each member was invited to
submit 4 prints for the latest
title, ‘Anything, anywhere,
anytime’, of which 3 would be
awarded marks out of 100 by
our resident judge, Cliff Bolton.
Th ese scores were then added
to the previous 2 phases of
the competition to produce a
fi nal total. It was a close fought
race, in which Kate Haywood
emerged as the winner for this
year to retain the cup, closely
followed by Sonia O’Donnell
and Linda Roth. Commenting
on the entries afterwards, Cliff
said he was amazed at the high
standard of prints and how
much we had all improved
since the club started. Th is
has to be greatly attributed to
Cliff and Jim Buckley for their
unending patience in explaining
the techniques involved in
photography, often for our
individual needs in a variety of
camera models.
Following the presentation and
the seasonal refreshments, the
group was engaged in general
discussion, mainly on the
importance of good focusing
techniques, in particularly in
connection with requests for
the magazine. Cliff took great
pains to illustrate the use of
the ‘macro’ setting for close-up
work. He also talked us through
next year’s competition and a
few ideas for the title ‘Winter
and Spring’ – our fi rst phase
to be judged in April 2013.
We will also bear in mind
any picture which we think
particularly relevant towards
the production of a ‘Whiteley
Village’ calendar – an exciting
development in next year’s
programme.
Th ere were several requests
for more practical help with
basic elements of photography,
especially for more recent
members so with this in
mind we will include it in
our fi rst meeting for 2013 on
Wednesday 9 th January at
2.00pm in the Activities Centre
– a good meeting for anyone
thinking of joining. Kate
golf
Our Christmas dinner, once
again, was a success. Th e
evening was attended by forty
people who all enjoyed the
food. Th e raffl e, which was
organised by Micky Baker, was
popular and our thanks go to
Sheila West and Alan Burrows
who arranged the evening.
Regarding the Course: Due
to the recent bout of cold and
wet weather not much has been
happening, so we will keep our
fi ngers crossed and hope that
the forthcoming spring will
enable us to use all our facilities
and play golf again!
I hope you all enjoyed your
Christmas and would like
to wish you and yours a very
happy and healthy New Year.
library
In my entry for the December
magazine I did not thank the
“trolley ladies” who do the
Library in the Care Centre.
How could I overlook them
when they do such a wonderful
job? So now, many thanks go to
Pattie Cockburn and her band
of ladies who keep the Care
Centre supplied with books.
A special mention must be
made of Elizabeth Whiting and
Winston Sheppard who read
to residents in the Care Centre.
In the past we have thought of
supplying audio books to the
Care Centre but these require
equipment to play them. I do
believe that the personal touch
of having the physical presence
of the reader is a better concept.
It seems that there are many
cat lovers in the Village. You
may not be aware of it but
we have all kinds of cats in
the Library. We have cats on
calendars and cats in pictures.
We have Bob the Street Cat
and Dewey the Library Cat.
We have Pablo, Carlos, Luis
and Max the Maine Coon at
Owl Cottage. We have Derek
Tangye’s Cornish cats and
recently Koko the Sleuth has
joined us. If you have not met
these furry friends come and
make their acquaintance. Of
course, like all felines they may
be out when you call. As we do
not discriminate, you will fi nd
we have some canine friends
as well. See you in the Library.
approximately mid April 2013,
so plenty of time to hone your
the outdoor season.
Th e new format of playing in
geared towards the build-up
to the 100 year celebrations
We have some activities
Th e Formal ball will take place
on 20 th October 2013.
And a band concert will be held
on 17 th November 2013.
Also various bus outings are to
be organised to which all RBL
members and all Villagers who
would like to come with us
will be invited. If you have any
suggestions they will be looked
into with regard to cost and, if
viable, we will put them to the
members.
I am still looking for guest
speakers for the year, so if you
have very interesting travel or
work stories, I would like you to
let everyone know about them
so please get in touch with me.
Th e meeting times will be
posted on our notice boards.
Th ank you to all members who
Last Word
An angel appears at a meeting
of religious leaders and tells
their leader that, in return for
his unselfi sh and exemplary
behaviour, God will reward him
with his choice of infi nite wealth,
wisdom or beauty.
Without hesistating, the leader
selects infi nite wisdom.
“Done!” says the angel, and
disappears in a cloud of smoke
and a bolt of lightning.
Now, all heads turn toward the
leader, who sits surrounded by a
faint halo of light.
One of the others whispers, “Say
something.”
Th e leader sighs ands says, “I
should have taken the money.”
