USAF ACADEMY, COLORADO
Colonel Bartholomew W. Weiss
Commander
5220 Cedar Dive, Suite 117
USAF Academy CO 80840-3100
Dear Cadet Candidate Select,
Congratulations on your selection to attend the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School.
This July you will be taking on a challenging program that will test you mentally and physically. Not all
students complete it, but those who do will not only be prepared for the rigors of the Air Force Academy,
but also have a firm foundation for serving the United States Air Force as officers of character.
As you prepare to attend the Preparatory School, you should know a few things. This is a military unit
and you will be required to adhere to all military standards. We have an outstanding 1 to 4 staff-tostudent
ratio. In comparison to other collegiate or preparatory programs our classes are exceptionally
small allowing our dedicated and professional staff to provide individual attention. The physical portion
of our curriculum is demanding, even more so because of the Academy’s location at 7,258 feet altitude. I
strongly urge you to begin a daily routine of jogging ½ to 1 hour a day and doing as many push-ups, situps,
and pull-ups as you can.
A few prohibitions: as required, you have signed a form listing any prior drug use and pledged not to use
illegal drugs. Shortly after you arrive, you will be tested for illegal drug use. Should you test “positive,”
you will be disenrolled. Additionally, underage drinking and providing alcohol to minors are treated as
very serious offenses and will be dealt with harshly. Finally, you may not have any dependents while
attending the Preparatory School.
Must do: please complete the information contained in this package accurately and immediately. See the
Required Items Checklist in this package for a complete list of documents we need you to return
promptly. The form letters are for information only and designed to familiarize you with our program.
Parents and family are encouraged (but not required) to accompany you to in-processing. While here, they
will be briefed in detail about the program. Those unable to attend in-processing may hear a similar
briefing during Parent’s Weekend.
If you or your family have any questions concerning this package or the Preparatory School in general,
please do not hesitate to contact our Director of Student Services at (719) 333-2583.
Again, congratulations on your Preparatory School Selection. We look forward to helping you become
the nucleus of the United States Air Force Academy Class of 2017. Go Huskies!
2
Sincerely,
this clause is included in your orders.
added expenses. If needed, have hair relaxers applied before arriving. All females must be
capable of pulling hair up into a hairstyle within regulatory standards (must be conservative (bun,
French braid, etc) and shorter than a parallel line drawn along the bottom of the collar of the
b) Have a tapered appearance on both sides and back, both with and without headgear. A
tapered appearance is one that when viewed from any angle outlines the individual’s
hair so that it conforms to the shape of the head, curving inward to the natural
termination point. Block cut is permitted with tapered appearance.
2) Men’s hairstyle will NOT:
a) Contain excessive amounts of grooming aids, touch eyebrows when groomed or
protrude below the front band of properly worn headgear.
b) Be worn in an extreme or fad style or in such a way that exceeds length or bulk
standards or violates safety requirements.
e. Do NOT bring large radios, tape recorders, stereos, etc. because very little storage space is
available.
CELL PHONES
MAIL
a. Cadet Candidates will turn in their cell phones upon arrival for BMT and are NOT allowed to
make or receive personal phone calls except during scheduled times during BMT. Therefore, any
calls to family/friends must be made prior to arrival at the Preparatory School.
b. Cell phones will be returned to Cadet Candidates once the academic year begins at the discretion
of the Prep School Commander.
Duty Officer at (719) 338-5648.
a. You will receive your mailing address during in-processing. Family and friends should NOT send
mail to you in care of the Preparatory School and should wait until you have provided them with
your PO Box address. You may not receive boxes until the end of BMT.
b. During in-processing you will complete and mail home an "arrival" postcard. This card will let
your family know you have arrived safely and provide them with your new PO Box mailing
address. The arrival postcard will be mailed to the person of your choice shortly after arrival.
c. It is advisable that you bring a supply of stamps and stationery to correspond with family and
friends during BMT since e-mail is not accessible until after BMT.
d. First Class mail (letters, cards, and boxes) delivered by the United States Postal System (USPS)
should be addressed to your PO Box address.
e. United Postal Service (UPS) or Federal Express (FEDEX) delivered mail cannot be addressed to
5220 Cedar Drive
USAF Academy, CO 80840
WEAPONS
a. Weapons are NOT permitted at the Preparatory School. Weapons include but are not limited to all
projectile and thrown weapons regardless of type of propellent, knives of any type or size,
edged/blunt weapons or tools, and training weapons to include non-fuctioning “dummy” mockups.
b. These items will be confiscated and may be destroyed.
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
7

a. We recommend that you do NOT bring large supplies of prescription drugs with you. Bring a 3week
supply of any necessary prescription drug(s).
b. If you are on medication for any reason, Air Force medical personnel will review the prescription
with you during in-processing and validate its necessity. Any applicable refills or new
prescriptions will come from military medical personnel.
PERISHABLE ITEMS
a. Do NOT bring any perishables or foods with you such as candy, cookies, fruit, cakes, etc. You
will not have a place to store them and you will not be allowed to receive/keep these items during
BMT.
b. These items will be confiscated during BMT and will NOT be returned unless in factory sealed
packaging.
VACATION
a. Each student will accrue 25 days of leave (vacation) each year. Three periods during the year are
set aside for leave: Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break.
b. If a student takes more than 25 days, he/she will be required to pay back the government prior to
graduation. The student's last paycheck will reflect the deduction for any unearned leave.
c. The dates listed below reflect tentative vacation periods until more detailed information or release
and return times are provided to Cadet Candidates. DO NOT make non-refundable plane
reservations that conflict with these dates. When scheduling airline reservations, you must allow
for travel time to the airport--plan 3 hours to the Colorado Springs Airport (COS) and 5 hours to
the Denver Airport (DIA) due to potential weather, traffic and airport security delays.
d. Both parents and Cadet Candidates must be aware of the Preparatory School schedule when
making flight reservations during Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break periods.
EXCURSIONS OR DECREASED AIR FARES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED JUST
CAUSE FOR EARLY DEPARTURE OR LATE RETURN.
e. TENTATIVE Break Periods. Students will be provided actual leave dates soon after arrival.
− Thanksgiving Break 20 November (after Noon) - 26 Nov (no later than 6 PM)
− Winter Break 21 December (after noon) – 3 Jan (no later than 6 PM)
− Spring Break 22 March (after 6 AM) – 31 Mar (no later than 6 PM)
Priors
a. You are NOT required to bring your leave balance to zero prior to arrival.
b. You will earn 25 days while at the Preparatory School and are required to take 25 days of leave.
c. If you receive an appointment to the Air Force Academy, any leave balance remaining will be
used during the time period between Preparatory School graduation and the first day of Basic
Cadet Training (BCT) which is approximately 5 weeks.
d. Excess days beyond the time period before BCT will be lost.
8

e. If you do not have any leave remaining after graduation from the Prep School, you will not be paid
during your 5 week break prior to BCT.
ACADEMICS OVERVIEW
a. Grading
1. You will take 4 or 5 courses per 9-week quarter with 4 quarters per year.
2. We use a ½-letter grading system (A, A-, B+, etc.), with course grades for each class and
subjective instructor comments given at the mid-quarter (Prog) and the end of each quarter.
3. Your instructors will provide extra instruction (EI) as needed. Be prepared for a demanding
program based on excellence.
b. Classes
1. During each grading period, you will take two mathematics courses (algebra/math applications
and trigonometry/calculus), one English course, and one science course (chemistry). You will
also have a life/study skills class first quarter and a reading course during one of the final three
quarters.
2. Additionally, you will have mandatory study time each evening, Sunday through Thursday.
Expect 4 hours of homework each day and as many as six quizzes per week. It is critical that
you study on weekends. Most successful students put in 8-12 hours per weekend.
3. All students are required to have their own graphing calculator. Students may own any
brand of graphing calculator, but the Mathematics Department teaches with Texas
Instruments calculators. If you already own a graphing calculator, bring its manual with
you. If you do not currently own a graphing calculator, we recommend you purchase
one before coming to the Prep School. A TI83/83+/84 or other brand of calculator with
comparable capability will meet all math requirements. We do not recommend highordered
(higher cost) calculators such as the TI-89 or 92, since their capabilities are
beyond the requirements of our courses.
4. You will not be allowed to use the TI-89 or equivalent calculator for some assignments or
exams. If you arrive without a graphing calculator, expect to spend $120 to purchase a
calculator immediately following the end of BMT and before classes start. If you have
any questions contact Dr. Schooff at (719) 333-7162.
5. Courses taken at the Preparatory School are solely to prepare you for success at the Air Force
Academy. Therefore, they are non-accredited and college credits are not awarded. Students
will receive a copy of their student grade transcript upon request.
USAF Academy CO 80840-2608
SUBJECT: Preparatory School Finance In-Processing
1. Congratulations on your selection to attend the US Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Our office requires
your Declaration of State of Legal Residence (DD 2058) and Fast Start Direct Deposit form (FMS 2231) with your
bank account information in order to build your computerized travel pay record. These forms must be filled out and
mailed with your completed forms package and a copy hand carried by you to in-processing.
2. The Declaration of State of Legal Residence is used to determine your state tax payments as well as some
veterans’ benefits. For Direct Entries this will be the state you entered the military service in and are registered to
vote in, i.e., your home state. Every state sets their residence requirements, so check with your state agencies to
determine if you are eligible to claim legal residency in that state.
3. The Direct Deposit form is required for all military personnel by federal law. It is used to pay you so it is very
important it be completed accurately and legibly. Please fill out blocks 1, 2, 3 & 5. Check the “Net Pay” box in the
“Type of Payment” block. This form must be a personal bank account with your name on it or it will be rejected by
the finance system.
4. During your move from home or old duty station to USAFA you are entitled to a Permanent Change Station
(PCS) travel allowance.
a. You are not authorized Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) travel payment within 150 miles of the USAF
Academy in accordance with POV restrictions in PLI 36-1.
b. If you travel by air you will be sent an airline ticket by USAFA Admissions and only be entitled to 1
travel day and per diem for that travel day. Keep your airfare receipt and any documentation of airline
rescheduling.
c. PCS travel vouchers will be filed during the finance in-processing briefing at the USAFA Preparatory
School for reimbursable expenses authorized by federal law.
5. The following information is required to compute and process your PCS travel voucher. The following
documents must be hand carried and presented upon your arrival at the Finance in-processing station:
a. PCS Orders or Reporting Instructions Letter depending on which you received from the Academy
Admissions Office.
b. Fast Start Direct Deposit (FMS 2231) and State of Legal Residence (DD 2058) forms.
c. Airfare, Taxi, Shuttle, Toll and Excess Baggage receipts for expenses over $75.
6. Any questions regarding these forms should be directed to the USAFA Finance Customer Service Section at
pencils, paper on the day of in-processing. This amount can total more than $2,000. These materials
will be purchased through AAFES with the MILSTAR card used in lieu of personal checks, cash, and
i. – NAME (last, first, middle initial): Self-explanatory.
ii. – SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: Self-explanatory.
b. Scholarship information: Scholarships can be used instead of the MILSTAR card for uniforms, textbooks and
supplies in accordance with the terms of the scholarship; however scholarship recipients are still required to apply
for and maintain a MILSTAR card for later use.
1. The USAFA Preparatory School is unable to process checks made payable to the Air Force Academy or
the Air Force Academy Preparatory School. If a student receives a scholarship from a company or local
organization, the scholarship check must be made payable directly to the student or the Army and Air
Forces Exchange Service (AAFES).
2. Checks made out to AAFES that exceed $1500 will be reimbursed to the student for the remainder of the
check by AAFES. All questions regarding scholarship awards can be directed to Student Services at
during Basic Military Training.
monthly paycheck. These expenses include but are not limited to:
Spring semester textbooks and supplies (significantly less than book costs for the first semester)
 Graduation expenses
 Military social functions
 Legacy gift
 Morale trips
 Replacement uniforms
Travel during breaks (You are obligated to pay for all leisure travel within your total five years at the
Academy)
expenses at the Preparatory School. However, upon arrival you will be required to make several purchases.
b. If you already have a MILSTAR card, ensure you have approximately $1300 of credit available. If you require
financial assistance please call (719) 333-2583 or DSN 333-2583.
PAY
a. It is your responsibility to manage and budget your money. The Air Force, the Air Force Academy and the Prep
School comply with federal law concerning military personnel who write checks/make withdrawals without
sufficient funds.
27

. You are required to have direct deposit for your paycheck as paper paychecks will not be issued. Students are not
required to have an account at a banking institution on USAFA grounds. You may stay with your current banking
institution or there are two banking institutions within walking distance of the Preparatory School if you wish to
open an account locally. If you opt to stay with your current banking institution you must hand carry with you all
your banking information (bank name, account number, and routing number) to in-processing. You will be given
the opportunity to open an account with one of the local banking institutions if you so desire.
c. If you have any loans or creditors, you are highly encouraged to pay them off prior to arrival. If you cannot pay
them off, it is your responsibility to let your Academy Military Training NCO (AMT) know after your arrival.
Your Academy Military Training NCO (AMT) will see that you receive prompt financial management training.
Direct Entry
a. You will be paid on the 1st of each month. Reserve Airmen are paid at the equivalent rate of 35% of the pay
grade O-1 with less than 2 years (approximately $900.00/month). This is sufficient to cover all of your expenses
at the Preparatory School.
b. Please do not consider a lack of funds to cover initial expenses a reason to decline admittance. Payment
arrangements will be made for those who need financial assistance. Contact Student Services at (719) 333-2583
for questions regarding financial assistance.
Priors
a. You will be paid on the 1st and the 15th of each month at the pay grade equivalent to what you have earned by 6
How do I enroll for healthcare while at the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory
School?
Once you in-process you will be enrolled in TRICARE Prime. TRICARE Prime is similar to a
civilian HMO. In this program you will be assigned to a Primary Care Manager (PCM) and will
receive all your primary care/specialty care at the United States Air Force Academy Military
Treatment Facility (MTF).
How do I receive primary and specialty care services while at the United States Air Force
Academy Preparatory School?
Primary care is received by calling the clinic and making an appointment to see your PCM. If
you require specialty care services for further diagnosis or treatment, you must first see your
PCM and the PCM will submit a referral to access services from specialty practitioners and
coordinate the referral request through TriWest, our region wide Managed Care Support
Contractor.
Primary Care definition – Basic or general health care traditionally provided by doctors
trained in: family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, and occasionally gynecology.
Specialty Care definition – Specialized health care provided by physicians whose
training focused primarily in a specific field such as neurology, cardiology,
rheumatology, dermatology, oncology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and other specialized
fields.

What happens if I am away from the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School
and need emergency Care?
If you are outside the local area and require emergency care, go to any emergency room and
identify yourself as an active duty military member under Tri-Care. You must notify your PCM
as soon as you are physically able and make them aware of your situation. If you require urgent
care you need to call your PCM and obtain authorization to seek medical care from the local
urgent care clinic/emergency room. Failure to alert your PCM could result in a Point of Service
charge where you will be responsible for the bill. If this occurs you could submit the claim
through your parents’ medical insurance if you are still a covered beneficiary.
34

Emergency Care definition – Acute symptoms of sufficient severity-including severe
pain-such that a prudent person could reasonably expect the absence of medical attention
to result in placing your health in serious jeopardy, serious impairment to bodily
functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. This is often considered
loss of life, limb or eyesight.
Urgent Care definition – Medically necessary treatment that is required for illness or
injury that would result in further disability or death if not treated immediately. The
illness or injury requires professional attention and should be treated within 24 hours to
avoid development of a situation in which further complications could result if treatment
is not received. The most common form is illness or “the flu”.
What happens if I disenroll (voluntary/involuntary) from the United States Air Force
Academy Preparatory School before I am enrolled in the United States Air Force Academy
4 Year program?
If you choose to separate, it is in your best interest to ensure all medical treatment is received
prior to separation. Any continued care post-separation will be authorized only on a case-by-case
basis (predominantly coordinated prior to separation). If you separate you must understand that
further medical care is your financial responsibility unless you were previously eligible for VA
medical benefits.
Do I need to turn in my medical records?
Medical records criteria will differ depending on your status.
Current Active Duty member (Priors), you will hand carry your original medical records
to the USAF Academy and turn it in during the medical portion of inprocessing.
Current Military Dependant or Civilian (Direct Entry), your medical records must
remain at the last base or clinic you were treated. It is highly encouraged you obtain a
copy of those records. You may turn in that copy during the medical portion of your
inprocessing, or you can keep them. You are not required to turn them over to the DoD
medical system.
MEMORANDUM FOR CADET CANDIDATE SELECTS (Priors and Direct Entries)
FROM: 10th DS/SGD
2355B Faculty Drive
USAF Academy, CO 80840-8200
SUBJECT: Dental Requirements for In-Processing
1. Congratulations on your acceptance to the USAF Academy Preparatory School. On behalf of the
10th Dental Squadron, I welcome you to the USAF Academy and Colorado.
2. It is our desire to ensure that dental concerns do not interfere with your success as an Air Force
Preparatory School student. The Preparatory School staff expects that you will arrive here with no
potentially disqualifying medical or dental conditions; mentally, physically and emotionally ready to
begin a vigorous physical and academic Preparatory Class year. Examples of dental conditions that may
prevent you from performing optimally include (1) the presence of wisdom teeth, either erupted or
impacted, that cannot be maintained in a state of health, (2) cavities that may become emergent problems
if not restored immediately, (3) active orthodontic appliances (braces).
3. Active orthodontic appliances are a disqualifying condition for USAFA Preparatory School
admission. Braces must be removed prior to your arrival at the Air Force Academy Preparatory
School or you will not be admitted into the program. All orthodontic treatment must be completed
and retainers (if indicated) in place prior to entering the Preparatory School. Don’t forget to bring your
retainers with you!
4. Interestingly, wisdom teeth are the leading cause of lost academic time. I highly encourage you to
visit your family dentist for a thorough dental examination, paying particular attention to the abovementioned
concerns. Correction of all dental defects and removal of wisdom teeth, when indicated,
before arriving at the Academy will maximize your dental readiness, minimize lost academic time and go
a long way toward ensuring your success as an USAFA Preparatory School student.
5. Upon arrival at the Academy, you will commence with a myriad of in-processing actions including a
dental examination. The USAFA Dental Clinic has recently converted to digital dental radiology. Thus,
unlike in past years, there is no need for you to bring x-rays or a dental record from your civilian
dentist.
6. Again, welcome to the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Be assured that my
dental staff is eager to serve you and will strive to provide the highest level of dental health for you. If
you have questions, my point of contact is Master Sergeant Kelly Links. She can be reached at
kelly.links@usafa.af.mil or (719) 333-5192. Thank you for your attention to these matters.
MEMORANDUM FOR PARENTS
FROM: HQ USAFA/PL-DSS
5220 Cedar Drive
USAF Academy CO 80840
SUBJECT: Student Services
1. Hello and welcome to the Prep School Family! I would like to take a moment to speak to
you, the parent, and introduce you to Student Services. As the parent of a cadet candidate you
are now embarking on a long and sometimes confusing journey. Student Services is here to help
you navigate the next 10 months. Many of you may be unfamiliar with the military and all of
our acronyms. For those with a military background, you may have other questions regarding
holiday breaks or Parents’ Weekend information. Regardless of what questions you might have,
Students Services is here for you.
2. The main charter of this office is to serve the cadet candidates and their parents. Among other
things, Student Services oversees Parents’ Weekend, In-processing, Graduation, Student Mail
and Holiday Break Info. We are also the Prep School’s Parent Liaison. If you have questions
about programs or life at the Prep School in general I encourage you to contact my office at 719-
333-2583. Student Services is your one stop information office.
3. One point we would like to stress is that you refrain from sending your son or daughter any
gift packages, cakes, candies, t-shirts, etc. until the day after Basic Military Training is complete
(05 August). Please note that no gift baskets will be delivered to the cadet candidates during this
training period. Once they are done, however, we are sure they would appreciate a gift from
home!
4. Please remind your son/daughter that they will not be authorized to have privately owned
vehicles (POVs) while attending the Prep School. Additionally, if they have dual citizenship in
another country, they will have to renounce that country’s citizenship in our presence and have
that foreign passport officially destroyed by our security manager here at USAFA.
5. Again, I extend to you a hearty welcome to the Prep School family and look forward to
meeting and working with you over the next 10 months. Remember your one-stop destination
for Prep School information … Student Services.
Developing Officers of Character in Service to Our Nation
Fact Sheet: Basic Military Training (BMT)
Mission of the USAF Academy Preparatory School:
The mission of the USAFA Academy Preparatory School is to motivate, prepare,
and evaluate selected candidates in an academic, military, moral, and physical
environment to perform successfully and enhance diversity at USAFA.
Mission of Basic Military Training:
Basic Military Training (BMT) is an intensive 18-day program designed to
produce disciplined, physically fit and professionally motivated cadet candidates
through a challenging and motivating introduction to the military profession and
the Preparatory School environment. We equip each basic cadet candidate with
the essential military skills and knowledge expected of a cadet candidate.
During inprocessing, each basic cadet candidate takes the Oath of Enlistment and
is enlisted into the United States Air Force. After the Oath, basic cadet
candidates are escorted to their dorm rooms by Academy Military Trainers
(AMTs) who will be their cadre, or primary trainers, for Basic Military Training.
BMT initially focuses on the transition from civilian to military life. AMTs will
instruct basic cadet candidates in military topics including customs, courtesies,
the Honor Code, Air Force heritage, marching, personal appearance, and room
order. Their daily physical conditioning includes strenuous exercises, running,
and competitive sports.
A typical day begins with a 4:30 am wake-up, followed by physical conditioning
and then military training. Three hearty meals are served each day in the Dining
Facility. Intramural sports take place in the afternoon. “Intercollegiate” athletic
teams will begin practicing during the last few days of BMT. Afternoon sports
are followed by briefings on Air Force Core Values, the Honor Code, and other
military topics. Taps occurs at 9:00 pm, ensuring the Basic Cadet Candidates get
plenty of rest for the next day’s challenging events. All of these activities will
condition the Basic Cadet Candidates to meet the physical and mental demands
of the Prep School and prepare them for the academic portion of the program.
BMT culminates in a ceremony where the BMT cadre hand over leadership of
the Preparatory School squadrons to the new cadet candidates.
BMT is not an easy program. It will challenge basic cadet candidates physically,
mentally, and emotionally. But once completed, cadet candidates will have
expanded their limits and will emerge with a deep sense of pride and confidence
in their accomplishments and abilities. They will have taken a first step in their
journey to becoming officers of character in service to their nation.
Director, Student Services
5220 Cedar Drive
USAF Academy CO 80840
DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL
USAF ACADEMY, COLORADO
Dear Parents of Cadet Candidate Selects,
Attending the USAF Academy Preparatory School is a unique experience. This experience,
in small measure, is shared with you through Parents’ Weekend.
Parents Weekend will take place during the Labor Day Weekend, 31 Aug – 03 Sep. This is
an annual event not only for the Preparatory School but also for the USAFA Academy’s nearly
4,000 cadets. For this reason it is important to make reservations for transportation and lodging
as early as possible. As you can imagine, with the onslaught of so many proud parents and
friends visiting the Colorado Springs area, the availability of airline tickets, hotels, and rental
cars is limited. For local information on hotels, rental cars and local attractions, contact Colorado
R & R. Their phone number is (719) 333-7367 or 1-877-517-3381 (toll free) or
www.coloradorandr.com. Another option available is the Colorado Springs Chamber of
Commerce at www.coloradospringschamber.org.
Several activities are planned for this exciting weekend. Some of these activities include a
Preparatory School campus and classroom visit, a Preparatory School military parade, a
Preparatory School football game, and an Air Force Academy football game. In addition to
events specifically provided by the Air Force Academy, there are also many tourist attractions in
Colorado Springs to visit and explore.
Although the schedule is not yet fixed, there are several factors that you might want to
consider when making your plans. Parents and family have the opportunity to accompany their
cadet candidate to class on Friday morning…classes begin at 0735 and end at 1130. Cadet
candidates are required to attend our football game on Friday afternoon, the parade on Saturday
morning, and the USAF Academy Football game on Saturday afternoon. They will be allowed
to spend the remainder of the weekend with their family and friends until Monday evening. You
may call Student Services for updated information at (719) 333-2583. As stated above, the
schedule is not yet fixed. For this reason the cadet candidates will be briefed after classes begin
in August regarding Parents’ Weekend events. After that briefing, your cadet candidate will
have more information for you concerning specific events.
Sincerely,
Fact Sheet: Parents Weekend
Developing Officers of Character in Service to Our Nation
Welcome to your United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School Parents
Weekend. Parents’ Weekend begins on Friday, August 31 st 2012, and ends Labor
Day September 3 rd 2012. The following information is provided to assist you in
planning for the various Parents’ Weekend Events. Please read the information
carefully so that you can closely plan your Parents’ Weekend with your cadet
candidate.
The students have progressed since you last saw them from being cadet
candidate selects to full-fledged cadet candidates. Basic Military Training has
given them new confidence in a strength many did not know they had. We
believe you will be impressed with the changes you see in them as they display
their military precision during the Parents’ Appreciation Parade and their
academic growth during the Classroom Open house. Then of course there is the
Preparatory School Homecoming Game at Husky Stadium.
Arrival at the Prep School:
Parents arriving from outside the Colorado Springs area are encouraged to arrive
on Thursday, August 30 th 2012, as several of the scheduled events begin the
next morning. Please note that due to military training requirements you will not
be able to visit the Preparatory School or your cadet candidate until the morning
of August 31 st .
Parking and Gate Access:
To get to the Preparatory School Parking Lot, you will want to enter through the
Academy South Gate on North Academy Blvd. You will be able to enter the
base with your driver’s license.
Weather:
Due to our location on the Rocky Mountain front range and our high elevation,
weather at the Academy can be highly unpredictable and change rapidly. The
temperature can vary form the high 80s to the low 40s. We recommend that you
come prepared for both extremes as well as rain or fog and that you bring
sunscreen, clear and unopened liquid bottles (to facilitate security screening),
hats for good weather during the scheduled events, and raincoats/hats for bad
weather. To better plan your visit, visit the Academy weather website frequently
prior to your departure at www.usafa.edu/tu/306ftg/oss/weather/sevenday.cfm
for the seven-day forecast trends.
For questions about Parents Weekend, please contact the Director of Student
Services at pl.dss@usafa.edu or (719) 333-2583.
