Five medals in London
Hanoverian horses returned home from the Olympic Games with one gold, two silver
and three bronze medals. The Games in London were joyous and went smoothly.
Greenwich Park offered first-class conditions for horses and riders.
Von Britta Züngel
219 horses entered in the Olympic Equestrian
Games including reserve horse/rider combinations.
65 horses were bred in Germany. Hanoverians
held the largest share with a total of 20 fourlegged
competitors.
The event riders started with dressage on the very
first day of the Games. The German team was aiming
for gold after two days of dressage with FRH
Butts Abraxxas by Heraldik xx/Kronenkranich xx
(breeder: Friedrich Butt, Bülkau) and rider Ingrid
Klimke as the best German pair in forth position.
The pair took the lead after an exciting cross–
country day. Eventing legend Mark Todd from New
Zealand entered the jumping course as the third
rider with NZB Campino by Contendro/Pinkus
(breeder: Hans-Jürgen Abel, Bremervörde) after excellent
performances in dressage and on the crosscountry
course. Abraxxas and Campino unfortuna-
tely had jumping faults but significantly impacted
earning medals for their respective countries: gold
for Germany, silver for Great Britain and bronze for
New Zealand. Ingrid Klimke withdrew “Braxxi”
from the final for the individual medals; Mark Todd
finished in 12th place with “Kinky”. Sam and rider
Michael Jung became dual Olympic Champions
followed by silver medal winner Wega and Sarah
Algotsson-Ostholt. Sandra Auffarth and her mount
Opguns Luovo won bronze.
We looked forward to the dressage competitions
with great anticipation. When they finally began
the German trio impressed with good performances.
The team medals were awarded after the
Grand Prix and the Special for the first time. The
final outcome was close. The Hanoverian black duo
consisting of Diva Royal by Don Frederico/Warkant
(breeder: Heinz Braul, Lehrte) and rider Dorothee
Schneider who exceeded all expectations and the
impressive sire Desperados FRH by De Niro/Wolkenstein
II (breeder: Herbert Schütt, Hemmoor)
won silver with team member Helen Langehanenberg
and her mount the Westphalian Damon Hill
by Donnerhall. Team Great Britain impressed with
phenomenal performances and won gold by a very
small margin. The bronze medal was awarded to
the Dutch team which had brought proven Salinero
by Salieri/Lungau (breeder: Horst Bünger, Essel)
and rider Anky van Grunsven to the Games on the
Themse River. The top eighteen riders qualified for
the freestyle. The spectators witnessed one of the
greatest moments in the sport of dressage. In the
end Valegro with Charlotte Dujardin from Great
Britain won gold ahead of Parzival and Adelinde
Cornelissen and Mistral Hojris and rider Laura
Bechtolsheimer. The judges awarded the ideal
score of 10,0 to Parzival a total of 13 times during
his performance. Kristina Sprehe rode her Desperados
FRH into eighth place in a field of very tough
competitors. “I rode my best freestyle of ever,”
Kristina Sprehe said overjoyed. The only mare of
the entire competition was Diva Royal and finished
in seventh place with an almost impeccable freestyle.
The pair made two small mistakes though.
“One should not make those at the Olympic
Games,” Dorothee Schneider said with a touch of
disappointment in her voice. This was the last performance
for this pair. Stella Charlott Roth who is
the daughter’s owner will ride Diva Royal again in
the future. 18-year old Salinero who was the Olym-
pic Champion of Athens and Hongkong was the
best Hanoverian in the freestyle. He impressed
with a lively and elastic performance. Anky van
Grunsven masterfully brought out his strengths
and received the six-best result. The Dutch rider
had already broken a record by winning the team
bronze medal. It was the ninth medal at her seventh
Olympic Games. “These were very emotional
days for me and I am so glad that Salinero had
such strong performances,” Anky van Grunsven
said at the end.
The story about the jumping competitions is
quickly told from a Hanoverian point of view!
Christian Ahlmann and Codex One by Contendro/
Glückspilz (breeder: Wilhelm Berghorn, Stolzenau)
experienced one of their darkest career moments
in the qualification. 15 penalty points shattered
the dream of an individual medal. The team competition
also took an undesired turn. Even though
Codex One had only one jumping fault the entire
team just did not measure up. The German equip
came to London as one of the favorite teams but
did not qualify for the second round. Accompanied
by cheering crowds team Great Britain won gold
ahead of the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia. Temple
Road by Antaeus/Graf Dagobert (breeder: Karl
Rabeler, Egestorf) was the best Hanoverian placing
twelfth with Cassio Rivetti representing Ukraine.
Nino des Buissonnets won Olympic gold with Steve
Guerdat, followed by London and Gerco Schröder
and Blue Loyd under Cian O’Connor n
Rutherglen was scheduled to become a Verden auction horse and already belonged
to the collection of the Summer Auction in 2007. However, he had to be
withdrawn. Since 2009, he has been stabled with Andrew Hoy. Photo: Lafrentz
Butts Leon by Heraldik xx /Star Regent xx
B.: Friedrich Butt, Bülkau, R.: Nina Ligon, Thailand
Four years ago, Butts Leon was Andreas Dibowski’s Olympic horse. Following
the victory in the four-star competition in Luhmühlen, he sold
Leon with a heavy heart to Nina Ligon who lives in the US and who is
competing for Thailand. The dam line of Liebeslust also produced Leonas
Dancer who competed with “Dibo” at the Olympic Games in Sydney.
Latina by Landor S/Silvio (above)
B.: Dr. Karl-Otto Jacobs, Bierbergen, R.: Takayuki Yumira, Japan
Latina found her way to Great Britain where she participated at first one-star-tests in 2008. Last
year, she was ridden by Lucinda Fredericks before she was taken over by Takayuki Yumira. Both
earned a sensational fourth place at the CCI*** in Vairano. Elwood and Firth of Lorne are more
successful representatives of the dam line of Norm. Photo: Caremans
Shamwari (Hessian) by Star Regent xx/Der Clou (left)
B.: Gita Zühlsdorf, Mühlheim, R.: Ludvig Svenerstal, Sweden
Shamwari is the only horse with a Hessen brand in London. Chris Bartle is coaching his rider.
Shamwari was first trained by Peter Thomsen who will compete in the German team. Ludvig
Svenerstal has been sitting in the saddle of the black-brown horse since 2009. Shamwari comes
from the dam line of Sanftmut. Photo: Lafrentz
Don Auriello (VA) by Don Davidoff/White Star
R.: Tinne Vilhelmson Silfven, Sweden
Don Auriello is also a former Verden auction horse, belonging
to the dressage horse collection of the 2006
Elite Autumn Auction. One year later, he competed at
the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young
Horses under his trainer Birgit Wellhausen-Henschke before
he was sold to Tinne Vilhelmson Silfven. Photo: Rau
St.Pr.A. Whisper (VA) by Wolkenstein II/Grenadier (above left)
B.: Klaus Kamps, Cuxhaven, R.: Hiroshi Hoketsu, Japan
Whisper is also in the team of dressage horses from the Verden auctions. She was sold as
state premium candidate at the Elite Auction in October 2000. The chestnut mare will
compete at her second Olympic Games, and her rider Hiroshi Hoketsu will be the eldest
competitor in London. The winning stallion His Highness comes from the foundation line of
Noria just as privately owned stallion Scolari, the World Champion of Young Dressage
horses in 2006 Dramatic, and the Olympic competitor Crisp. Photo: Bronkhorst
Bates Antonello by Anamour/Winnebago (above right)
B.: A. J. Simson, New Zealand, R.: Louisa Hill, New Zealand
Bates Antonello was born in New Zealand. His sire Anamour by Aalborg/Lombard came to
New Zealand after having successfully completed his stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf.
Grandsire Winnebago by Winnetou/Wulf was a popular sire in New Zealand in
the 70ies. Photo: Lafrentz
Santana (VA) by Sandro Hit/Rubinstein (right)
Z.: Ingo Pape, Hemmoor, R.: Minna Telde, Schweden
Santana was sold to Sweden as non-licensed stallion at the 2003 Stallion Sales. He returned
to Verden in 2006 and 2007 to participate at the World Breeding Dressage Championships
for Young Horses. Flagship of the dam line of Cabanda are Pik Bube I and II, Bugatti Hilltop
Sancette is one of the most successful dressage horses
in Australia. He came from the US to the fifth continent.
The dam line of Pilanka also produced Crossing Jordan
who will compete in London for Mexico in show jumping.
Codex One (VA) by Contendro/Glückspilz
B.: Wilhelm Berghorn, Stolzenau, R.: Christian Ahlmann, Germany
Privately owned stallion Codex One was already in Verden twice: He was sold as licensed
stallion in 2002. Two years later, he became top-priced horse of the Elite Auction
in April. In 2007 and 2008, he was placed in the Final of the Federal Championships
under Karl Brocks. Codex One only changed to the stable of Christian Ahlmann last year
who then further advanced him to the top. Photo: Lafrentz
Al Calypso by Askari/Calypso II
B.: Meike Fischer, Bad Bevensen, R.: Samuel Parot, Chile
Al Calypso qualified for the Olympic Games almost unnoticed. After having achieved
excellent results in Florida, he came to Europe to be prepared for the London event. His
breeder purchased his dam, state premium mare Camilla, at the Elite Foal Auction, and
she passed on her fantastic sport capabilities to her progeny. Half brother Escapado by
Escudo is also successful in advanced level courses. Photo: Lafrentz
Crossing Jordan by Champion Du Lys/Calypso II (above left)
B.: Jürgen Ernst, Essel, R.: Nicolas Pizzaro, Mexico
The list of riders who successfully competed with Crossing Jordan is long. Sebastian
Holtgräve-Osthues placed him at the 2005 Bundeschampionate. He owes his first international
successes to Alois Pollmann-Schweckhorst. He descends from the same dam
line as Sancette who will compete for Australia in dressage in London. Photo: Lafrentz
George by Garant/Don Juan (above right)
B.: Carsten Wiedemann, Uelzen, R.: Jill Henselwood, Canada
George delighted the audience as four-year-old during the Free Jumping Competition of
the Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program in Verden. He found a new owner right after
the competition who brought him to North America. Dam Depeche delivered nine successfully
competing offspring, among them Samquist by Stakkato and Romana by Rio
Branco who are successful advanced level jumpers. Photo: Lafrentz
Temple Road by Antaeus/Graf Dagobert
B.: Karl Rabeler, Egestorf, R.: Cassio Rivetti, Ukraine
Temple Road has a successfully competing dam: Granola was successful up to advanced
level. She was ridden by Meik Martens who also competed with Temple Road from novice
to medium level. Cassio Rivetti celebrated first successes in July 2011 after he had
taken over the bay horse from the Irish Cian O’Connor. Photo: Rau

Success series
under Olympic Rings
German competitors were highly successful at Olympic Games from Seoul to
Hongkong. The flood of medals began in Barcelona. Hanoverian horses shone
especially in Hongkong. All individual dressage medals were awarded to horses with
the desired Hanoverian foal brand.
By Susanne Hennig
The sensation of Seoul 1988
Nobody would have ever dared to imagine how
the events actually unravel in Seoul, Asia in 1988.
Team gold medals in all three equestrian disciplines;
individual gold in dressage as well as bronze
– only the officers at the Berlin Games in 1936 had
an even higher medal harvest! In the first jumper
qualification for the individual final course desig-
ner Olaf Petersen does not build the fences to the
allowed limit; this leads to clear rounds for 17 out
of 74 participants. Germany’s riders Franke Sloothaak
on Walzerkönig, Dirk Hafemeister on Orchidee,
Karsten Huck on Nepomuk and Wolfgang
Brinkmann on Pedro finish the course amidst the
better half of the participants. The German team
wins. After dressage and eventing it is the third
team gold medal ahead of the favored American
team. The German eventing team lays the foundation
for an overall victory in the dressage ring.
Claus Erhorn/Justyn Thyme, Mathias Baumann/
Shamrock, Thies Kaspareit/Sherry and Ralf Ehrenbrink/Uncle
Todd master the cross-country course
without eliminations or jumping faults. They only
add a few time penalty points to their dressage
score which keeps them in the lead. Lots would
have to go wrong for Germany to loose its gold
medal position and nothing did! Great Britain wins
silver and New Zealand bronze. Mark Todd NZ’s
top rider once again wins the individual gold medal.
The Olympic dressage competitions are not
only noteworthy because Germany’s series of victories
continues but also because dressage gets a
new face: Three young riders prove with impressive
rides that they can break into the well-established
and older generation of dressage competitors. 21year
old Nicole Uphoff from Duisburg and her eleven-year
old bay Westphalian Rembrandt quickly
become the crowd’s favorites. The other representatives
of the young dressage guard are Monica
Theodorescu on Ganimedes and Ann-Kathrin Linsenhoff
on Courage. The German team wins gold
with Dr. Reiner Klimke and Ahlerich; Switzerland
gets silver and Canada bronze.
A flood of medals at the turn of the
millennium
The Olympic Games in Barcelona in1992 are the
beginning of an exemplary success series for German
riders during the medal-rich nineties. Germany
is certainly not considered to be in the contention
for a medal after the first round of the Nation
Prize because of the sale of the horse Pamina and
several injured Olympic hopefuls beforehand. In
the second round all hopes are on the last rider
who is Ludger Beerbaum on his Holstein mare
Classic Touch. The noseband of the hackamore
breaks at the third fence. Very unfortunate! Eleventh
place is the sobering team result! The team
from the Netherlands becomes Olympic champion.
The individual competition is decided in a most
dramatic finish. Beerbaum is the only rider to complete
two double clear rounds. Piet Raymakers
from the Netherlands is his toughest opponent.
The Dutch rider also has two faultless rounds on
Ratina Z. The horse becomes Beerbaum’s future
partner. He however lost his chance to win gold
because of 0,25 time penalties. The Games in Barcelona
become a total triumph for Germany’s dressage
riders. One nation wins team gold and all individual
medals for the first time in the history of
the equestrian games. Nicole Uphoff and the Westphalian
Rembrandt once again impress with brilliant
performances winning the Grand Prix as well
as the Special. The results are very close in the
Grand Prix. The difference between the title defendant
and Olympic newcomer Isabell Werth on the
powerful Hanoverian Gigolo by Graditz is only 6
points. Klaus Balkenhol on the Westphalian Goldstern
by Weinberg finishes both tests in third place.
Monica Theodorescu completes the German success
story with taking forth place in the Grand Prix
on her eleven-year old Hanoverian Grunox by Grunewald.
In the Special she has to sit out as only the
top three competitors of each nation are allowed
to participate. 49-year old Herbert Blöcker achieves
a glorious highlight in his long-standing career
as an event rider. He impresses not only with a
flawless ride on the difficult cross-country course
but also with a double clear round on the stadium
course with his 16-year old partner Feine Dame
who is a Holstein mare by Diplomat xx. He is awarded
a well-deserved silver medal in the individual
competition and the bronze medal with his team
that consists of Matthias Baumann/Alabaster, Rolf
Ehrenbrink/Kildare, Cord Mysegaes/Ricardo and
Blöcker. The riders from Australia win the individual
as well as the team gold medals in this division.
1996 - Gold in Atlanta
The worry about tremendous heat and high humidity
that is typical for the region around Atlanta
during the time of the Olympic Games is on
everyone’s mind in 1996. In eventing the riders
participate in two different competitions (individual
and team) for the first time. The Olympic competition
ends in a disappointment for the German
team. The equip places ninth; only two team members
being Bettina Overesch and Bodo Battenberg
actually finish. Hendrik von Paepcke being the
youngest team member at 22 saves the German
honor placing seventh on the Hanoverian Amadeus
by Afrikaner/Servus in the individual competition.
The riders from Australia, New Zealand and the
United States once again prove their dominance in
eventing in Atlanta. A subscription to Olympic gold
for Germany’s dressage riders though: Isabell
Werth/Gigolo, Klaus Balkenhol/Godstern, Monica
Theodorescu/Grunox and Martin Schaudt/Durgo
take gold ahead of the Dutch team that takes silver.
In the individual competition a duel takes
place between Isabell Werth and Anky van Grunsven.
While Isabell Werth wins the Grand Prix on
Gigolo, Anky van Grunsven wins the Special on
Bonfire. Isabell Werth proves to have the stronger
set of nerves in a very exciting freestyle-final. She
performs an incredibly difficult freestyle to the
tune of “Just a Gigolo”. Anky van Grunsven wins
silver after mistakes in the one- and two-tempi
changes in front of her teammate Sven Rothenberger
on the Hanoverian Weyden. Just as in dressage
the Olympic Games end for Germany’s jumper riders
with two gold medals, too. There are dramatic
moments at the beginning of the first round when
Franke Sloothaak has a fall with Joly Coeur. The
pressure is now on his team members Ludger Beerbaum/Ratina
Z, Lars Nieberg/For Pleasure and
Ulrich Kirchhoff/Jus de Pommes. Lars Nieberg and
Ludger Beerbaum impress with double clear
rounds. The German team wins with only 1,75 penalty
points ahead of the United States and Brazil.
Ulrich Kirchhoff then wins the final of the 40 best
competitors. German horse breeders are also the
winners at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Breeding
products from Germany stamped the dressage and
jumper championships like seldom before. 13
Olympic dressage competitors carried the Hanoverian
brand. Hanover has the strongest contingent
with 19 representatives even in jumping.
Sydney 2000: “The greatest Games of all
times”
When the aged IOC-President Antonio Samaranch
described the Sidney Olympic Games in 2000 as
the greatest Games of all times there were only a
very few to disagree. Just as in Atlanta there are
two competitions in eventing. The team competition
starts out positively for Germany. Marina Köhncke
on Sir Toby (bred in England) finishes without
penalty points. Nele Hagener on the Hanoverian
Little McMuffin by Lemon xx and Andreas Dibowski
on the Hanoverian Leonas Dancer are unable to
fulfill the expectations. Even though they have falls
and refusals they remain in the competition and
finish it. A good performance of Ingrid Klimke and
Sleep Late cannot save the team that has to be
satisfied with a disappointing forth place. Australia,
Great Britain and the United States carry the
medals home. The field of participants in the individual
competition is rather inhomogeneous. Blyth
Tait from New Zealand wins the gold medal with
Ready Teddy. In the dressage ring the performances
of the German and Dutch teams become more
and more similar in respect to quality that is higher
than ever before. Germany wins gold for the tenth
time; the Netherlands follows in second place. The
US-Americans win the bronze medal. Isabell Werth
on Gigolo, Nadine Capellmann on Farbenfroh as
well as Alexandra Simons-de Ridder on Chacomo
deliver excellent performances in the Grand Prix.
Ulla Salzgeber’s Rusty does not perform in accordance
with his ability. His result is the scratched
score. The duel for the individual medals between
Isabell Werth and Anky van Grunsven continues.
Both riders compete on 17-year old horses and
both horses enter their well-deserved retirement
after these Olympics. The performance of the Dutch
pair in the Grand Prix Special is the first step for
the outcome of who will win the individual gold
medal. A faultless and very harmonious freestyle
enlarges the lead for the Dutch pair even more.
Isabell Werth only has positive comments though,
“Today Gigolo and I did not loose the gold medal;
we won the silver medal instead.” Unfortunately
bad weather conditions impair the jumper classes.
The last participant literally decides the exciting
competition for the gold medal. Once the German
team members - Otto Becker/Dobel’s Cento, Ludger
Beerbaum/Goldfever, Marcus Ehning/For Pleasure
and Lars Nieberg/Loro Piana Esprit FRH –
have finished it looks very much like a French
victory as long as the last rider called Philippe Rozier
has a clear round. Three rails however bust the
hope for gold and once again team Germany becomes
the Olympic champion. The team from Switzerland
earns silver and Brazil takes the bronze
medal. The two Dutch competitors Jeroen Dubbeldam
and Albert Voorn earn individual medals together
with the largely unknown Khaled Al Eid
from Saudi-Arabia. Lars Nieberg and his Hanoverian
mount Esprit FRH show off their experience and
finish the individual competition in forth place together
with Marcus Ehning on For Pleasure and
Otto Becker on Cento.
Athens in 2004: brilliance and misery
A century of equine competition and breeding
ends six months before the anniversary of the German
Equestrian Association in Berlin with the
Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. The eventing
competition appears equivalent to a “Greek tragedy”.
The German team impresses with exceptional
performances in all part disciplines and earns the
Olympic gold medal rightfully so. Bettina Hoy and
her Irish grey Ringwood Cockatoo are in second
position after dressage and cross-country while
Ingrid Klimke and her English Thoroughbred Sleep
Late are in sixth position. The third team member
Frank Ostholt and his Hanoverian Air Jordan by
Amerigo Vespucci xx hold ninth place after dressage
and cross-country. Hinrich Romeike on Marius
and Andreas Dibowski on Little Lemon also
perform well. The best prerequisites to once again
win team gold 16 years after the success in Seoul!
Bettina Hoy and Hinrich Romeike complete the stadium
course without any faults; Andreas Dibowski
takes one rail down. The German team wins the
gold medal with this final result – at least that is
what everyone thinks! The cheering silences
quickly when the judging team punishes Bettina
Hoy with 14 penalty points for exceeding the time
limit. Supposedly she crossed the starting line twice.
This decision strongly impacts the final result
for the team competition: Germany finishes in
forth place behind France, Great Britain and the
United States. The German team leaders successfully
appeal with the Court of Arbitration. Once
gain cheering for winning Olympic gold! The day
after the individual competition the teams from
France, Great Britain and the USA appeal to the
CAS. Two days later and after long deliberations
the CAS pronounce sentence: The decision of the
Court of Arbitration is not admissible and
Germany’s event team looses the gold medal. Ulla
Salzgeber would have loved to retire Rusty after
winning an individual Olympic gold medal. The pair
wins the Grand Prix by a wide margin that allows
for hope for an overall victory. After the Special
and the Freestyle however she has to give precedence
to Anky van Grunsven from the Netherlands
who prepared a new horse for international competition;
the 10-year old Hanoverian Salinero by
Salieri. The German dressage team in Athens consists
of new faces on Hanoverian horses. In addition
to well known Ulla Salzgeber and Rusty, Heike
Kemmer participates on Bonaparte, Hubertus
Schmidt on Wansuela suerte and Martin Schaudt
on Weltall VA. Together they win the gold medal
for Germany ahead of Spain and The United States.
Hubertus Schmidt justifies his Olympic nomination
rather impressively. The professional rider and trainer
from Westphalia is considered to be one of the
best in his field. He rides Wansuela suerte by Warkant
into fifth position in the individual competition.
Only one week prior to the games Marcus Ehning
makes the difficult decision to leave his
stallion For Pleasure home because of a mild tendon
injury. Reserve rider Marco Kutscher unexpectedly
gets the opportunity to compete in his first
championship with Montenderwho is a Dutch stallion.
He has two double clear rounds in the Nation
Prize just like his teacher Ludger Beerbaum on
Goldfever. Even though Christian Ahlmann on the
Holstein Coester and Otto Becker on the Holstein
Cento do not remain faultless they both still have
solid rounds. With a total of only eight penalty
points Germany wins the Olympic gold medal
ahead of the Unites States and Sweden. The
equestrian sport makes headlines again six weeks
after the debacle about Olympic eventing. The FEI
announces that some German championship horses
had positive results from the A-analysis (a drug
test). The results are confirmed through the B-analysis.
Goldfever is affected! Ludger Beerbaum is
disqualified because it was his duty to announce
that he treated his stallion with a Cortisone cream.
This information leads to the dispossession of the
gold medal. Without Goldfever’s clear rounds the
team finishes in third position.
Light and shadows in Hong Kong 2008
Four years later in Hong Kong the drug tests of five
jumper horses from five different nations are positive;
a devastating result. The sport is in a crisis.
Especially in Germany numerous measures are implemented
to guarantee a clean sport! The Olympic
Games in Hong Kong also have highlights. Two
gold medals for Hinrich Romeike from Holstein on
Marius are frantically celebrated. The other members
of Germany’s golden team are FRH Butts Abraxxas
with Ingrid Klimke Butts Leon with Andreas
Dibowski. The dressage team consists of only Hanoverian
horses: Bonaparte by Bon Bonaparte/
Consul ridden by Heike Kemmer, Elvis VA by Espri/
Garibaldi II ridden by Nadine Capellmann and
Satchmo by Sao Paulo/Legat with rider Isabell
Werth. Germany wins gold in front of a very strong
Dutch team that consists of two Hanoverians
among others. They are Sunrise by Singular Joter/
Werther and Salinero by Salieri/Lungau. All medals
are awarded to athletes with the desired foal
brand in the individual competition. Anky van
Grunsven who writes history with this success and
Salinero become Olympic champions. She is the
first female Olympian to win the gold medal in one
discipline three consecutive times. Satchmo and
Isabell Werth who are in the lead after the Grand
Prix Special end up winning silver. Heike Kemmer
and Bonaparte earn the bronze medal. Shutterfly
by Silvio/Forrest xx and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum
compete for Germany in jumping. Other
teams unfortunately win the medals; the Unites
States win in front of Canada and Norway. In the
individual competition there is a jump-off for third
place and Shutterfly is in it. After a clear round the
chance to win a medal dwindle only with the nextto-last
competitor: Beezie Madden’s Authentic has
a clear round, is faster and wins bronze. n
The British Hanoverian mare Woodlander Farouche
dressage horses in 2011. The chestnut mare is more
mature as a six-year old and very convincing.
hardly believe the success when Jan
Pedersen honored World Champion
Woodlander Farouche. Photo: Frieler
“Simply wonderful, textbook ready,” main judge
Dr. Dietrich Plewa raved in his commentary right
after the impressive performance of the Hanoverian
mare Woodlander Farouche by Fürst Heinrich/
Dimaggio (breeder: Lynne Crowden, Great Britain)
and British rider Michael George Eilberg in the
class for 6-year old dressage horses. This performance
will go down in the history of the World
Championships for young dressage horses in Verden.
The judging team awarded the ride with a
score of 9,88. The moving artist received a dream
score of 9,72 for her performance in 2011. Over
the past 16 years only Florencio by Florestan/Weltmeyer
and Don Davidoff by Don Gregory/Rubinstein
had received higher scores, 9,8 and 9,76. In
2012, Woodlander Farouche was able to pass by
these two exceptional horses to become the high-
est scored Dressage World Champion with a world
record.
Quiet and fully focused in the dressage ring
Eilberg and Woodlander Farouche entered the
World Championship-arena completely relaxed in
rising trot. These two stayed totally calm and focused
while other riders try to impress with extensions.
After all they were both fully aware of their
quality. At the end of the test Dr. Dietrich Plewa
could not but comment, “I say this up front: We
saw two mistakes: the last flying change was not
executed to perfection and we would have loved
to see a little more mouth activity. Otherwise there
is nothing for us to complain about in this ride.”
Farouche approached her task “with lightness,
true cadence, consistent connection and impulsion
development.” Farouche received a 9,8 for her trot
because of a small rhythm mistake. The walk was
active, always forward with immense ground cover
and always in a four-beat rhythm. The walk pirouettes
were textbook ready – a 10 - outright! The
canter was, too “wonderful and effective with constant
cadence”. Unfortunately Farouche made a
small mistake in the last flying change which reflects
in the score, 9,9. The judging panel scored
the throughness with a 9,7, overall impression
again with the top score of 10,0. “What else do
you want from a six-year old horse?” The main
judge asked himself.
The expert audience rose from their seats and celebrated
the “Queen of the World Championships”
with well-deserved applause. Just as in 2011 and
after a grandiose performance Woodlander Farouche
became the absolute highlight of Verden’s
World Championships. After many discussions
about the famous black sire from the Netherlands
over the past months, this British chestnut mare
has proven that we have options. With a lot of
charm, light-footedness and elegance in all three
basic gaits we witness a horse develop into a firstrate
dressage athlete based on naturally built-in
qualities. “There is no need for me to enter Farouche
in so many shows,” so her rider 26-year old
Michael George Eilberg, “She already perfectly
masters all the movements. Farouche is just a
sweet and wonderful horse even when handling
her every day.” Eilberg will continue to compete
Farouche’s 10-year old dam Dornroeschen in England
after a short excursion to the Olympic Games
in London. After all the pair had qualified for the
second reserve spot on the British team for London
2012.
Breeder and owner Lynne Crowden proved her
sense of humor at a press conference while descri-
ing Farouche as a young foal, “She was really not
attractive. She had a pink nose like a pig – we
called her Ginger Pig. I have to thank Dr. Ludwig
Christmann from the German Verband for when he
declared her Champion Foal at the Foal Championships.
Everybody realized what a fantastic horse
she really is when she moved under saddle for the
first time. The joy is enormous.” Lynn Crowden
breeds Hanoverian horses in England with more
than 20 mares. She manages the renowned breeding
farm Woodlander in the Welsh Raglan with
her husband Dave. As a board member Lynne
Crowden also runs the British Hanoverian Association.
“I obviously try to breed more foals with
Farouche’s qualities; however that is not easy. This
will be my life’s mission as well as a challenge.”
A special partnership
Farouche’s dam Dornröschen carries Erlenkette
dam line blood out of which foundation sire Florestan
alsoemerged. With the producers Fürst Heinrich
and Dimaggio there are two sires in Farouche’s
pedigree that were World Champions for young
dressage horses themselves. Lynne Crowden has
sent her horses to Family Eilberg for several years.
It is a family of riders located in Worcestershire. “I
can feel the special partnership that connects the
two whenever I watch Michael and Farouche in the
dressage ring. It can not get any more harmonious.
I am very happy to have Michael at my side as a
rider,” she describes the intense relationship she
has with the trainer of her horses.
The Dutch gelding Borencio by Florencio/Lord Sinclair
was the second horse to pass the magic score
of 9. He and his rider Emmelie Scholtens won the
silver medal for the Netherlands in the final for sixyear
olds with a total score of 9,1. “An athlete with
the right attitude; eager and always ambitious,”
the judging jury commented. The Oldenburg Sir
Donnerhall II by Sandro Hit/Donnerhall earned the
bronze medal with his Danish rider Thomas Sigtenbjerggaard.
The six-year old sire is trained in the
barn of Andreas Helgstrand.
Five additional Hanoverians participated in the
qualification. Leonie Bramall presented Richthofen
by Royal Blend/Wolkentanz (breeder: Fritz-Harald
Strodthoff-Schneider, Jade) for Canada and finished
on a score of 8,14. Marcus Hermes and Flynn
PCH by Falsterbo/Walt Disney (breeder: Gerhard
Finck, Padinbüttel) did not perform to their true
potential. The score of 7,82 reflected this. The United
States sent Sabine Schut-Kery and Sanceo by
San Remo/Ramiro’s Son II (breeder: Gerhard Dustmann,
Melle). Christilot Boylen had tacked up Florencia
by Florencio/Weltmeyer (breeder: Axel Windeler,
Hawtins Floriana by Florestan/Weltmeyer who was
bred in Great Britain just like Farouche. The share
of German bred horses is certainly respectable in
the division for six-year olds. The World Championship
title was awarded to a Hanoverian bred in
Great Britain and the bronze medal wnet to an Oldenburg
stallion – what else could we wish for? In
addition to that there were five very good placements!
Three Dutch horses, two Swedish and one
Danish horse joined the seven German horses.
The title remains in Germany
The World Championship title in the five-year old
division stayed in Germany. Eva Möller delivered
two almost perfect rides on Sa Coeur by the Oldenburg
Sir Donnerhall at the World Championships in
Verden. Another pair from Germany won the silver
medal. Ann-Christin Wienkamp presented the
Westphalian sire Revolverheld by Rockwell/Landstreicher.
The black sire Capri Sonne Jr. by Rhodium/San
Remo (KWPN) won bronze with his Dutch
rider Dinja van Liere.
Eva Möller advanced to becoming the best rider at
these World Championships with a gold medal in
the five-year old division and a forth place in the
division for six-year olds. She was impressed by Sa
Coeur, “We already understand each other very
well even after only two months. Sa Coeur is very
people-oriented, totally relaxed in the show ring
and has above average movement.” “You don’t
get such a horse every day,” Eva Möller looks towards
the future with a laughing and a crying eye.
The head judge and commentator Marietta Sanders
van Gansewinkel from the Netherlands rea-
lized very quickly the potential of Sa Coeur in the
final for five-year olds. “We cannot even imagine a
better walk, just wonderful” and awarded the
highest score of the day, a 10,0. As a competitor
with a perspective Sa Coeur received the following
other scores: Trot 9,6; canter 8,9; throughness 8,8
and a 9,6 for general impression. With an overall
score of 9,38, Sa Coeur was the only horse in this
division to pass the magic score of 9,0. All other
horses stayed below including the Westphalian
sire Revolverheld with an overall score of 8,98.
The Hanoverian sire Sir Donovan by Sir Donnerhall/
Weltmeyer qualified for the five-year old final as
the only Hanoverian with his rider Nick van Laer
from Belgium. The pair finished on 13th place with
a final score of 7,88. They had placed seventh with
a score of 8,38 in the qualification. On the final
day the sire showed slight weaknesses in the canter,
“certainly correct and rhythmical however we
would have loved to see a bit more energy and
carrying power today.” The beautiful stallion
showed his true qualities in the qualifying class. He
received a score of 8,9 for his trot and an 8,8 for
his canter.
A total of eight Germany-bred horses participated
in the final for five-year olds; five Oldenburg horses,
one Hanoverian, one Westphalian and one
Rhineland horse. Five horses came from the
Netherlands and one each from Denmark and Finland.
Five other Hanoverians competed in the fiveyear
old division next to Sir Donovan: the stallion
Deveraux by Depardieu/Donnerhall under Steffen
Drahm (breeder: Dr. Ulrich Kriebel, Bienenbuettel),
the gelding Domenikus by Don Marco/Rosentau
(breeder: Werner Rückgauer, Krautheim) under
Holga Finken, the gelding Dhannie by Don Crusador/Weltmeyer
(breeder: Hinrich Engelke, Doerverden)
with rider Juan Francisco Fernandez Munoz
from Spain, the mare Della Scala by De Niro/Rubin-
Royal (breeder: Daniel Sabel, Gersten) with rider
Anthony Astier and the stallion Belissimus by Belissimo/De
Niro (breeder: Dörthe Nölkenhöner, Raddestorf)
under Eva Jancarikova. Even though the
different performances were quite good they were
not good enough for a final qualification. Jan Pederson
from the WBFSH (World Breeding Federation
for Sport Horses) was very satisfied with the
international field of participants as well as with
the quality of the horse evaluations. “It was the
horse that had been trained correctly and had solidity
in accordance with its age that mattered and
not just spectacular movement at the World Championships
as well as at the Olympic Games in London.
I am saying this with true conviction.” The
World Championships for young dressage horses
in 2012 were once again perfectly organized. n

Reunion in Verden
The Hanoverian Jumper Horse Championships started on Wednesday because of the
high number of entries. Following the Herwart von der Decken-Show the qualification
for four-year olds began in the arena. This presented an opportunity to many
spectators of the mare show that they took up.
By Ulrich Hahne and Dr. Ludwig Christmann
Cantara won in the six-year old
division with Thomas Brandt (left).
old champion under rider Karl
Brocks. Photos: Ernst
great number of presented horses at various
A ages had been in Verden before. It was almost
a reunion of Verden’s auction horses. Other horses
in return will become future auction horses. 53
four-year olds participated in the jumper horse
class at the A-level ** to receive the permission to
compete in the final on Sunday that was an L-level
class. The horse had to receive a score of 7,6 to
achieve this goal. Small and excusable mistakes
denied a sometimes better horse the participation
in the final. Concalido by Calido/Contendro remained
unbeaten in both classes. Sabine van den
Weghe, Badbergen rode the stallion that jumped
with confidence and radiated his experience. The
stallion descends from the dam line of Imortelle
that is also the dam line of the international jumper
competitors Caballero (Sebastian Freese) and
Delon VA (Lars Nieberg). Stanton by Stalypso was
an exemplary representative of this dam line in the
five-year old division. Concalido especially im-
pressed with his rhythmical canter which allowed
him to jump the fences at any time out of any situation
with a kind of sovereignty; this was truly
amazing for a four-year old. Concalido became the
unchallenged champion in the division for fouryear
olds with a score of 8,8 in the qualification
and a 9,0 in the final.
The privately owned sire Semper Fi by Stakkato/
Grannus presented himself under his rider Sebastian
Elias with much ambition and ardor but not
quite equipped with the continuity of a champion,
however. Breeder Wilhelm Ovelhey from Isernhagen
exhibited Semper Fi on Verden’s foal auction.
Semper Fi descends out of an excellent jumper line
just like Concalido. He obtained his nobility and his
athletic focus from his Arabian ancestors on the
dam side of his pedigree. His score of 8,8 in the
final would have turned out even higher, if he had
not been quite so fresh in the beginning. A mare
won the bronze medal. Cassata by Cassus/Stakkato
is no stranger in Verden. Last year the grey mare
out of the breeding program of Dr. Jürgen Lehner,
Müggendorf, brilliantly performed in Verden’s freejumping
competition (2nd place) and in free-jumping
on the Herwart von der Decken-Show. She
then received a Ih-prize. She has impressed even
more with her jumping talent this year. The powerful
yet a bit short-lined mare finished in third place
with rider Joachim Winter with a score of 8,6 from
the qualification and the final.
The group of five-year olds was of exceptional
quality. It was by no means a small and elite group
of competitors but a field of 68 participating horses.
It required an even 8,0, which stands for good,
in the jumper class at the L-level to qualify for the
final. Stallions dominated both divisions. The final
consisted of a jumper-horse class at the M*-level.
Eight horses participated in a jump-off. The qualifying
score for the jump-off was 8,2 and better. Five
stallions were in the group of eight being Commissario,
Inliner, Chacco Gold, Van Helsing and Scentender;
four were licensed.
Top scores for the champion
Commissario by Catoki/Contendro (breeder: Dr.
Carsten Haack, Freiburg) entered the ring as the
last competitor under rider Karl Brocks in both the
qualification as well as in the final. The privately
owned stallion rightfully left the stadium with top
scores regardless of the results he had obtained
prior to his performance. Even though his score in
the final was not quite as high as in the qualification
because it took a little bit of time for him to
find his rhythm his combined score of 9,0 put him
in the lead for the jump-off. And he was not about
to give up this top position. The judging committee
that consisted of Joachim Geilfus, Klaus Gosch and
Hans Wallmeier awarded Commissario scores between
8,8 and 9,2, while judging independently for
the stallion’s powerful jumping ability. The stallion
took first place with a final score of 27,00.
Reserve champion Inliner by Iberio/Sao Paulo, a
sire from the State Stud Celle ridden by Eva Bitter,
matured positively over the passed year. In 2011
he finished the Hanoverian Jumper Horse Championships
in third place. In 2012 he appeared to
have matured a lot and presented himself with
considerably more athleticism. This stallion that
was bred by Alois Naber, Saterland was able to reduce
the large margin to Commissario from the
qualification considerably in the first round of the
final. Eva Bitter and powerful Inliner added a notch
in the jump-off and closed in on the champion reducing
the difference to 0,2 with a final score of
26,8 after the jump-off.
A mare won bronze just like in the four-year old
division. St. Pr. A. Caramia by Chacco-Blue/Almox
Prints J (breeder: Joachim Betz, Dillenburg) jumped
cautiously and powerfully using her entire body.
Caramia confirmed her positive impression from
the qualification in the final under rider Mathis
Schwentker. She entered the jump-off in forth
place with a score of 8,3. An effortless-appearing
easy-going round in the jump-off guaranteed her a
third place.
21 out of 52 talents qualified for the final for sixyear
olds. The top eight of the first round with
scores of 7,9 and better qualified for the jump-off
that was judged by faults and time used – just as
at the Bundeschampionate. It became really tight
and very exciting! In the end the Hessian mare
Cantara by Cristo/Cassone was the winner with
her rider the renowned jumper trainer Thomas
Brandt; he bred the mare himself. The sire Cristo is
a Holstein stallion by Contendro. Cantara is an adroit
ans noble mare of medium frame with good
technique and ability. She was quickly back on her
feet after each fence. She had qualified for the final
with a third place. She received a score of 8,5
for her first round.
Eva Bitter rode two horses; one into second and
one into third place. Both horses carried Stakkatoblood
as was to be expected. The long-legged Stalido
by Stakkato/Calido finished in second place
entering the jump-off with a score of 9,2. This was
the highest score in the first round. He was not
able to beat the fast time of Cantara, though. Renate
Bosse, Wendeburg bred Stalido out of the
dam line of Odalga. Last year he had placed third
at the Hanoverian Jumper Horse Championships
and had qualified for the final at the Bundeschampionate
in Warendorf. The third-placed horse called
Argelith Squid by Salito/Gibraltar (breeder: Ralf
Girndt, Peine) had a similar history. Eva Bitter had
a clean first round with him and received a score of
9,0. Unfortunately the pair was the first to go in
the jump-off. He showed his phenomenal ability
but had a little rumble after the combination. In
the end he was a second slower than the champion.
Squid could certainly be called the favorite for
the jump-off with a third place in the Federal
Championships in 2011 and as the winner of the
qualification with a score of 9,2.
We witnessed a broad group of top athletes that
should have the potential for international competition
in every age group. The Hanoverian Jumper
Horse Championships were an excellent preparation
for the Bundeschampionate; a large
number of Hanoverian jumpers were able to qualify
for that. n
Isabell Werth is one of the best dressage riders of all
times. She earned her biggest successes riding
Hanoverian horses. The next top horse called Don
Johnson FRH by Don Frederico/Warkant is already in
her barn.
Von Britta Züngel
”Don Johnson is a very elastic and
spectacular horse and is provided
with all possibilities for the sport of
dressage,” Isabell Werth describes
her present top horse. Photo: Frieler
THE HANOVERIAN: You have been highly
successful with Hanoverian horses. What
connects you with Hanover?
Isabell Werth, “The many grand successes in the
dressage ring I have been allowed to celebrate
aboard Hanoverians is unquestionably create a
bond. Weingart was the first; I had my greatest
successes with Gigolo FRH and Satchmo. I love
horses and am crazy about training them. When I
see the reach of the Hanoverian breed and the immense
potential, Hanover obviously presents a
great challenge and is always worth a trip!”
THE HANOVERIAN: Your current top horse is
Don Johnson FRH by Don Frederico/Warkant.
What makes him special?
Isabell Werth, “Don Johnson is a very elastic and
spectacular horse. He holds all the possibilities for
the sport of dressage and still has potential to do
more. The bay has developed beautifully over the
past months. I have been excited about ‘Jonny’
right from the beginning. He was still maturing
when he came to my barn. Even then his moving
mechanics were convincin, and he gave me a very
good feel under saddle. His former rider Matthias
Klatt said that it could go either way with him, ‘up
or down’.
I prefer powerful and naughty horses. ‘Jonny’ is
still very playful but I can channel it. His personality
is the complete opposite to Satchmo’s. On one
side Satchmo was rather domineering on the other
side he also was scared and tense. ‘Jonny’ has total
self-confidence and is not at all scared. He is
naughty in a positive way and nothing bothers
him.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Many of your horses carried
the appendix FRH from the Hanoverian
Support Association abbreviated FRH. Don
Johnson was awarded this honor in Verden.
How important is the FRH to you?
Isabell Werth, “The engagement of the FRH made
it possible for me to keep Gigolo FRH. Great trust
between Herwart von der Decken, the former President
of the support association, and Dr. Uwe
Schulten-Baumer distinguished the co-operation.
They always looked for a way and found it. I am
still incredibly thankful for that. This was also the
beginning of a wonderful co-operation that is
based on great trust. Hanover was the first breed
association to realize and understand the need for
support and established the support organization.
That is what makes Hanover special to always be a
little bit faster and a little bit better than the
others. Over many years the FRH has been a strong
partner for me.”
THE HANOVERIAN: How do you look upon
the position of the Hanoverian horse in the
sport of dressage?
Isabell Werth, “The strengths of Hanover lie in the
broad breeding area and in the healthy foundation
of the breed. Movements will always take place in
the breeding of horses. Once we looked for a bit
more W-blood in the pedigree, then more S-blood
and then another time F- or D-blood. The foundation
of the breed is very strong in Hanover and
everyone benefits from it! The deciding factor for
me is that a breed is healthy and that it is based on
a broad foundation. With this in mind Hanover offers
the largest potential.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Do we select correctly
from the perspective of a dressage rider?
Do we allow the right stallions into the
breeding program?
Isabell Werth, “The answer to the question, if the
right stallions are approved is always very relative.
Unfortunately nobody knows in advance. There are
sufficient stallions people did not expect much of
from a breeders’ point of view. They were described
as being the final product and then the offspring
surprised all. There are however just as
many examples to the contrary. The combination of
Don Frederico x Warkant is an excellent fit as Don
Johnson FRH or Diva Royal have proven. There are
many Don Frederico-descendants in the sport of
dressage that are very hopeful. Other lines may be
more suitable for amateurs but we need amateur
as well as performance horses.
Hanover has always been strong in breeding dressage
horses. We now have the feeling that the
breeding of jumpers is improving, too. Again and
again breeders follow new trends. Foundation sires
like Der Löwe xx or Grande created an incredibly
strong breed foundation that allows for mistakes
here and there.
It is important to search for a healthy foundation in
the breeding program and to not become influenced
too much by trends. A breeder must always
be aware to breed correct and powerfully moving
horses. While observing the developments in the
Netherlands I believe that the breeders there may
have focused a bit too much on show and great
front-end action. We are still on the right track
here in Germany.”
THE HANOVERIAN: What could be improved
in the relation between the sport and the
breeding program?
Isabell Werth, “The contact between breeders and
riders could be better. Isn’t it very important that
talented horses get into the right hands as early as
possible? I believe that we have plenty of good
horses in Germany – we just have to be able to
locate them. Maybe we must address the associations.
I greatly enjoy keeping in contact with the
breeders of my horses. The breeders of Don Johnson
FRH call on a regular basis to inquire about
Jonny. I am delighted when breeders show an interest
in the development and history of the horses.
I keep in contact with the breeders and the often
results in them offering me young horses. For obvious
reasons I cannot view all young horses in every
breeder’s barn. But this presents an opportunity
to identify top horses at a very early stage. It does
take time and experts to find them though. The
first sight can be deceiving.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Which attributes are essential
for a Grand Prix-dressage horse?
Isabell Werth, “Three top basic gaits, elasticity, rideability
and performance willingness. Doctor Uwe
Schulten-Baumer would not touch a horse that
does not display a good walk. I am of similar opinion
because I am convinced that three top basic
gaits are essential. I view all other opinions as
trendy movements with which one cannot exist
long-term. Grand Prix-horse must also be appropriately
spirited and lively.
There is no horse without weaknesses. It is important
as the rider and trainer to have a vision and
the feel to deal with the respective weakness. I let
the horse inspire me. I have had many very successful
horses that were not perfectly built. In general
one obviously wants the ideally constructed
horse. There is nothing you can do though with just
a perfectly constructed body and no movement.”
THE HANOVERIAN: At what age can you detect
the talent for Grand Prix?
Isabell Werth, “Early on you can evaluate type, basic
gaits and rideability. You can then see if a horse
moves with enough elasticity and if the hind leg is
quick enough. One can realistically assess the talent
for Grand Prix as five- to six year olds.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Please give your opinion
on the development in the international
dressage arenas during the past years.
Isabell Werth, “We wanted globalization - we
wanted the competition in dressage, too. Now we
have got it and now we cannot complain. The
other nations have caught up. We as the riders
from Germany have to live with this fact and have
to just be even better. I am convinced that horses
with good and solid basic gaits and an appropriate
interior will perform the almost perfect test and
will have the nose ahead in the end! The ideal is to
combine both. In general the art of riding has continued
to develop. I rode differently ten years ago.
While training my young horses I have become
more and more aware of the increased importance
of the Piaffe- and Passage-tour.” n
Breeding
A denseness
quality
The mare base determines the lasting breed success.
The development of mare quality must therefore
have top priority. One of the main goals of the mare
show system of the Hanoverian Association is to
move this development ahead, to test it and to make
it visible.
Von Dr. Werner Schade
20 The Hanoverian 09|2012
Within the Hanoverian Association the Herwart
von der Decken-Show in August holds
a superior role with respect to the development of
mare quality. The current vintage of three-year old
top Hanoverian mares is presented in direct comparison.
Within a number this years events this
mare show certainly portrays a tentative highlight
as the show is conducted in this concept.
We have only seen a few very exceptional top mares
in the last years but this year the entire collection
reflected a high denseness in quality that has
not been witnessed before to this extent. It began
with the jumper mares. The show starts with openair
free-jumping. The jumping ability as well as the
quality of movement of the mares impressed both
guest-judges Elmar Pollmann-Schweckhorst,
Bergisch-Gladbach and Scott Hassler, USA. All
eighteen mares were of athletic type with strong
dynamics and effective canter strides. Three mares
were by the sire Chacco-Blue; Lordanos, Valentino
and Clinton I were represented by two daughters
each. We saw interesting descendants of younger
Hanoverian stallions as well like Canstakko, Carenzo
and Carlucci. We saw Holstein-blood influence
on the sire as well as the dam side in pedigrees,
which were carefully built up from a Hanoverian
performance base.
The class victory in the first division went to St.
Pr.A. Chantal by Chacco-Blue/Conteur (breeder/
owner: Stefan Kleine, Warmsen). This light-footed
St.Pr.A. Liliefee by Londontime/Falkland convinced in
all criteria and became the champion dressage mare.
Photo: Ernst
and elegant mare impressed with her great carefulness
and generous ability while the difficulties
increased. An impressive horse with the right attitude
towards the fences, cleverness and a good
perspective! A success for the deceased sire Chacco-Blue!
His two other daughters also did well.
St.Pr.A. Diarada KJ by Diarado/Contendro (breeder/exhibitor:
Klaus Jürgens, Sehnde-Bolzum) impressed
with magnificent performances in the second
division. This powerful Diarado daughter disposed
of very productive and animated movement.
She never showed the slightest bit of weakness at
the fences. In spite of her size and her huge movement
the mare was able to easily adjust to the distances
and jumped high fences with ease because
of her exceptional ability. With the impression she
made at the fences and her beautiful presentation
on the triangle this mare became the overall champion
of all jumper divisions.
The class of halfbred mares has shriveled down
considerably over the past years. This year we saw
a total of seven mares in this division. This sad development
was expected after having reviewed the
breeding records. The presentations of these seven
mares were inspiring though. Lauries Crusador xx
clearly dominated the field with his six daughters
just as in previous years. One mare descended
from Likoto xx. This sire attracts attention again
and again with his highly interesting offspring and
clearly deserves more attention from the breeders.
St.Pr.A. Luciana by Lauries Crusador xx/Hohenstein
(breeder: Uwe Heinrichs, Balje; owner: Hermann
Jarck, Himmelpforten) was the first mare of this
division in the ring. This well-proportioned and
high blood-influenced mare with beautiful large
lines impressed the judging commission to such an
extent that no other halfbred mare was able to
take the lead away from her. This mare developed
productive, very energetic and animated movement
out of a powerful push-off. The reserve champion
St.Pr.A. Luciana by Lauries Crusador xx/His
Highness (breeder/exhibitor: Erika Lütjen, Grasberg)
also carries Hohenstein blood on the damside
of her pedigree. She also impressed with her
very ground-covering movement. Each and every
halfbred mare exhibited active hind legs combined
with high elasticity and good productivity in the
walk, which made this division very valuable.
Strong dressage mares
A total of 47 mares were presented in the dressage
divisions which was the largest contingent of
the regional clubs. These mares descended from 25
different sires out of eight lines. Sires that go back
to Donnerhall held the largest share. Don Frederico
and his four daughters and Desperados and Dancier
with two daughters each were the strongest
representatives. Stallions from other lines were Soliman
de Hus, Belissimo M, Londontime, Locksley
II, Quaterback and Sir Donnerhall all of which had
several daughters in the collection. St.Pr.A. Despira
by Desperados/A Jungle Prince (breeder: Gisela
Meyer, Bunderhee) took the lead in the first dressage
division. In very good self-carriage this mare
exhibited energetic and uphill movement. Especially
in the turns on the triangle the mare proved
her ability to collect yet to continue with her im-
pressive movement. The very powerful mare, St.
Pr.A. Butterflay by Belissimo M/Wolkenstein II
(breeder/Owner: Gerhard Dustmann, Melle), followed
closely in second place.
The Furioso-line received attention in the second
dressage division. St.Pr.A. Follow Me by For Compliment/Regazzoni
(owner/breeder: Johannes zur
Lage, Bersenbrueck) was awarded the Ia-prize. Her
carrying power and her light-footed movement
were remarkable. St.Pr.A. Fürstin by Fürst Romancier/Wolkentanz
(breeder/exhibitor: Joern Wedermann,
Wangerland) came second with her impressive
appearance and her supple moving mechanics.
The third dressage division stood out because of
its very strong participants. The Londontime and
Locksley II daughters impressed with their phenomenal
movement. The decision was so close. In the
end St. Pr. A Liliefee by Londontime/Falkland (breeder/owner:
Friedo Dodenhoff, Horstedt) was victorious
as she was more than convincing in all criteria.
This harmonious and strikingly colorful chestnut
mare impressed with her excellent conformation.
Collected or extended, her trot was always balanced
and impressive in its mechanics. Her walk was
also very regular and productive. St.Pr.A. Santanyi
by San Amour/Fürst Heinrich (breeder: Berd
Volbers, Beesten; exhibitor: Heinrich Giesselmann,
Barver) was a close second. This impressive and
large-framed mare disposed of incredible productivity
in her movement. St.Pr.A. Scarlett by Sandro
Hit/Fabriano (breeder: Christian-Wilhelm Ohse, Koenigslutter;
exhibitor: Matthias Klatt, Hahhausen)
won the forth dressage division. This mare exhibited
an energetic push-off; her walk was diligent
and ground covering. St.Pr.A. Soley by Soliman de
and her powerful push-off. Photo: Frieler
Numerous spectators awaited the selection of the
champion mare from the final ring with great excitement.
The ring was filled with mares of high-carat
quality. St.Pr.A. Lilliefee succeeded in showing
herself off even better at this second presentation
to win the overall championship title in front of
reserve champion St.Pr.A. Santanyi. Because of the
high overall quality on this show this is a phenomenal
success for both mares. The impressive mares
on the final ring in the afternoon demonstrated
the impression the show in its entirety had already
conveyed. In addition to long lines all mares impressed
with elegance and athleticism underlined
by good self-carriage in the movement.
The consistently increasing interest in the Herwart
von der Decken-Show on the national but also the
international level was much felt this year as well
- because of the many spectators and much internet
activity. The mare show was excellent advertisement
Full praise
for the team
The Danish Hanoverian Association organizes both its
Hanoverian shows at the end of June. Both events were
enriched with classes for four- and five-year old dressage
horses for the first time.
By Dr. Ludwig Christmann
Alarge-framed two-year old black mare by
De Niro/Robin out of the breeding program
of Christel Bendixen, Randers was
highlighted as champion mare on the small
show in Hedensted. On the final ring she
competed against the important Lady Longlife
by Londonderry/Racot owned by Jens-Martin
Laursen, Thorsoe. The black mare Sauvignon
by San Remo/Davignon out of the
breeding program of Lisbet Jörgensen, Augustenbork
was also on the final ring with a
1a-classification which makes her an aspirant
for the Elite title. She impressed with her
enormous moving potential in the trot and
canter in the mare performance test that
took place the same day. Two other mares
participated in the mare performance test
that had already been presented on the mare
show in Fehrenbötel. One of them was Björk
by Belissimo M/Donnerhall who was exhibited
by Heidi Jensen, Gadjerg. She was highlighted
as the best mare of the performance
test because of her steady and consistent
performances in all three parts of the mare
test.
Ten foals participated in the foal show. The
final ring offered very homogeneous and
high quality. A long-legged son of Krack C/
Lauries Crusador xx (owner: Diana Vejrso
Kruse, Vinderup) was highlighted as the
champion foal. A very powerfully moving
daughter of Fidertanz also out of a mare by
Lauries Crusador xx (breeder: Johannes Sondergaard,
Glebjerg) was highlighted as the
best filly. A large-framed and powerful moving
daughter of Chequille/Davignon (breeder:
Hubert Knigge, Ahlden) caught
everybody’s attention in the division for dressage
horses. This filly had already caused a
stir on Danish dressage horse shows.
In Ringsted south of Copenhagen we clearly
noticed the close proximity to Sweden as several
Swedish breeders presented their Hanoverians.
Nine mares participated in the mare
performance test. Four-year old Queen by
Quaterback/Sandro (breeder: Andrea Lahmeyer,
Bassum) stood out. Lena Nystroem
from Sweden had bought the elegant bay on
the foal auction in 2008. She impressed every
one with her outstanding canter, her high rideability
and also her very good free-jumping.
Another foal auction purchase was selected
as show champion though: Permilla
Stroem also from Sweden had bought Dolle
Sport Breeding
Deern by Dancier/Worldly in 2009. This
youngster had not lost any of her former movement
qualities. As a matter of fact this
mare presented herself in the trot and in the
walk with movement far above average. In
the end she was highlighted as the show
champion. A 2-year old daughter of Stevie
Wonder/Heslegaard’s Rubin was awarded a
Ia-prize on the final ring, too. The third elite
mare candidate next to Dolle Deern and
Queen was the four-year old powerful mover
Quiara by Quarterback/Don Frederico (breeder:
Dr. Thomas Müller, Buchholz; owner: Lise
Steffensen, Farum).
The foal show featured an unchallenged winner;
a filly by Quarterback/Wolkentanz II out
of the breeding program of Anne Kollberg; a
very typy filly with very elastic moving mechanics.
A Dancier/Weltmeyer colt out of the
breeding program of Pernilla Svensson from
Swedish Broby became the best colt of the
show. The competition in the division for
four- and five-year old dressage horses delivered
a superior winner with five-year old
Rose Wild CBS by Roosevelt/Wittinger (owner:
Charlotte Olsen, Heddinge) who had
been highlighted as elite mare candidate last
year. The test rider was Lena Gronnemose
and the judge Lorenz Linnet who is the president
of the Danish association. We would like
to commend the organizational team around
Anja Nygaard and Anne Kollberg who did a
phenomenal job to make this event a positive
experience for breeders and spectators. n
With built-in
clockwork
The demands on horses for vaulting has increased
consistently over the past years. After all the score
for the horse constitutes 25 percent of the result in
competitions.
large-framed exterior, a smooth and swinging
A canter and a gentle disposition: The demands
on a modern vaulting horse are high. Radiant like
Totilas, elegant like Damon Hill and Desparados
and possibly bred out of the same lines – the wishes
of the athletes, the trainers and the lunge
handlers know no limits. The pedigrees of the horses
most often take a secondary role in acrobatics
on horses though. Often a very limited budget of
the associated club and diversified training (also
far away from the lunge line) determine the balance
artist with its built-in clockwork on a circle. The
horse factor has increased in importance in com-
petitions over the last few years. At international
competitions the four-legged partner now determines
25 percent of the final score instead of 10
percent as it was for a long time. This circumstance
has clearly changed the demands on and the daily
workout of the vaulting horses certainly at the top
level of competition.
Just as in all disciplines of riding do, the prerequisites
on the horse as a partner depends on the
desired use. It is without question that vaulting at
the beginner level does not require the market’s
best vaulting horse. It often is sufficient to use horses
with unshakable patience and an honest disposition
for recreational vaulting. Beginners that
start their equestrian career with vaulting to develop
contact with and trust in the horse must be
able to safely groom, lead and feed the animal. The
walk to the paddock should be enjoyable and not
a challenge or a risk. Rearing, biting or even kicking
must not be in the horse’s repertoire. The rule
is that a calm interior beats an excellent exterior at
least as long as the competition idea is far off.
Over the past years the sport of vaulting has developed
greatly especially in Germany. The undoubtedly
acrobatic discipline stepped out of the shadow
of the overpowering dressage and jumping
competitions at the latest with the World Equestrian
Games in Aachen in 2006 after the removal of
the age limit one year earlier. Vaulting is no longer
a sport only for children. Vaulting is U18 (under 18
years of age) and sometimes even U30. Vaulting is
in; and it certainly is no longer only an introduction
to equestrian sports. This development also excites
German federal trainer Ulla Ramge. This lady from
Warendorf has served in her position for ten years.
Daring pyramids and always new and spectacular
elements have revolutionized the discipline that
once served as an introduction to equestrian
sports. The level of training for the horses has followed
this development, says Ramge. With respect
to the quality of horses “this sport has really jumped
ahead a lot. “Only a very few clubs lead the
way in excellent training. The quality of horses has
improved considerably.”
Professional daily training
The daily training has clearly become more professional;
this is one reason for the positive trend.
Modern concepts of scientific training methods
have been introduced into the daily training. For
instance Viktor Brüsewitz who is an athlete in the
federal cadre trains almost 30 hours per week. His
horse Rockard H works just as hard in an intense
weekly training’s program. It is undeniable that the
ten-year old Hessian gelding by Rubioso N/Wiener
Domspatz (breeder: ZG Hoehl, Griesheim) is top fit
in the dressage ring, on the trails as well as on the
circle.
Vaulting horses at this level do not just do vaulting.
Diversity in the training’s program plays a
decisive role. Germany’s team veterinarian Dr. Augusto
Fernandez strongly believes in condition training.
He regularly asks the horses that belong to
the federal cadre to perform interval sprints just
like Usain Bolt during his preparation for the Olympic
Games. A diverse training program including
cavaletti work, jumping, dressage training and trail
riding is no longer an option but an irrevocable
prerequisite for competitive use at higher levels. It
is just as important as proper conformation that
includes a broad, flat, insensitive back, a just as
broad, possibly flat, slightly sloping croup and only
moderately developed withers. These are parts of
the physical conformation. The horse’s fundamental
willingness and ability to canter in balance for
longer periods of time is just as important is.
The key to success
The operative word is balance: The key to any and
every success in vaulting lies herein, so the federal
trainer Ramge. “A horse must be able to keep his
balance under a rider in turns and on 10-meter
circles.”Horses are allowed to compete in vaulting
at the age of six at national level; the horses have
to be 7 years old in international competition. “At
this time the horses should be trained according to
their age also in dressage movements,” Ramge
declares.A vaulting horse should be able to effortlessly
complete a dressage test at the L-level.
Otherwise one need not even start with the demanding
weight-shifts which the sport of vaulting
calls for. After all the horses must be able to carry
the additional load of the acrobats. This task requires
good basic training beforehand that will give
the horse the tools to carry and balance himself
and the additional load on a circle of 15-meters in
diameter. Vaulting requires a working canter with
collection ability. Other attributes: the foreheadnose
line is in front of the vertical and the poll is
the highest point. The canter must be clear and
lofty, three-beat and upward in consistent contact.
The hindquarters must carry and show engagement
in jumping under the center of gravity with
an upwardly arched back. Only then can a horse
carry the weight of the vaulting acrobats. This concludes
the theory in accordance with the rule-demands
and on training.
There are however many world champion trainers.
In general the horse is a fleeing animal. Therefore
another component plays a significant role: the
disposition. During the breaks and the in between
phases of individual competitors vaulting undoub-
tedly is one of the loudest, euphoric and enthusiastic
equestrian disciplines. These exceptional situations
that are hard to prepare for are out of the
ordinary and present an enormous stress factor for
numerous horses. “If the fleeing instinct is well developed,
it becomes difficult,” federal trainer Ramge
speaks from experience. The pedigree also plays
an important role. “There are lines that are known
for for not producing well developed mental capabilities,”
said Ramge.
“Much can be achieved with intense and good
training in all other aspects of a horse’s athletic
abilities and skills,” says Ramge. A lot can even be
accomplished with horses that do not carry top
performance genes. “This fundamentally separates
vaulting from dressage and jumping.” The federal
trainer estimates that about 80 percent of the performance
ability can be trained into the horse.
Therefore we always discover new horses appearing
out of the presumed shadow-existence which
exhibit high-level performance because of excellent
lunge-work. It is the person lunging who plays
the most important role anyway. After all he/she is
the one to communicate with the horse through
aids. The apparatus totally and entirely relies on its
conductor. A horse is not allowed to misjudge the
shifting weight on its back as aids, but must follow
the guiding person at the other end of the lunge
line whilst performing its canter strides and circles
evenly, uniformly and steadily like clockwork.
Many weaknesses can be remedied in time through
continued training, some even entirely, says Ramge.
It is noteworthy that presumed farmhorses became
true stars of the circle through these training
If you drive south from Verden for about 700 kilometers
you will arrive in Pfalzgrafenweiler that
Erich Single calls home. The 56-year old businessman
operates a successful Hanoverian breeding
program on a beautifully situated10 hectare farm.
If you look from the farm buildings over to the valley
you will first see a dressage ring and then fields
that are surrounded by woods. When Erich Single
opens the gate of the open-stall where his mare
herd lives, they gallop with their foals to these
fields on paths that were designed for just that
purpose.
You quickly realize that Erich Single is a horseman
once you strike up a conversation with him. The
sparkle in his eyes and the excitement in his voice
when he talks about his horses leave no room for
doubt. He lives with and for his horses. “We had a
small agricultural operation in earlier times,” the
breeder starts telling, “that’s when the contact
with horses began.” He has bred Württemberg
horses since the beginning of the seventies. He
successfully competed locally in jumper classes at
the L- and M-level. Incited by friends the Swabian
put out his feelers towards Hanover almost 20 years
later. If you are from Northern Germany and
you drive onto his farm today you would immediately
notice the Gable of Lower Saxony on the wall
opposite to the house.
The then already retired State Stud employee Otto
Panning offered advise to Erich Single when he
started breeding Hanoverian horses. He drove to
his former place of employment which was the
breeding station Landesbrück with Erich Single.
Since then Grande, World Cup and their descendants
enjoy Erich Single’s respect as a breeder.
“It was not easy to find a dressage filly for 10,000
Erich Single und Famms Enkelin: Gräfin v. Graf Top aus
Shutterflys Vollschwester Shuttergirl. Photo: Hahne
DM.” It had to be a dressage filly as his life-partner
Silvia Schnittenhelm is an enthusiastic dressage
rider. Among others she has successfully competed
up to the S-level on the Hanoverian Walk-Over by
Werther/Daimyo xx. Erich Single found what he
was looking for at Family Kropp in Sittensen. He
bought a mare by Grandferdinand/Waidmannsdank
xx. He adds with a smile, “As a dressage
mare.” “The next year Otto Panning said to me:
This time get a dressage horse. You can use the
other mare as a jumper, too. After all I knew that
you preferred a jumper.” At first Grandy’s offspring
carried the Württemberg brand. The H brand returned
to the left hip of the descendants out of this
dam line one generation later.
Connection to the Olympic champion
“Thoroughbred blood is important,” Erich Single
says, “Even though I never use Throughbreds directly
I pay attention to the fact that the stallions I
use are Thoroughbred influenced. The Thoroughbred
blood always came through in Grandy’s offspring.
For instance in her most successful descendant
Desperado S by Divino de L: he was successful
with Michael Jung from the Bundeschampionate
up to international CIC**-classes.” The connection
between the breeder and the Olympic champion
Michael Jung is very special. “His father rode my
horses,” Erich Single says with pride. When people
asked him who his rider was they often advised
him to look for a real rider. Today nobody says that
anymore. The connection to Michael Jung appropriately
characterizes the way Erich Single operates.
He is not interested in quick success. He relies on
continuity with horses as well as people. If he believes
in a horse he will give it time. Patience is one
of his assets. Erich Single values mutual and reliable
partners and friends.
Erich Single has sent his young horses to Eva Hauke
in Gärtringen who starts them under saddle for
more than 30 years. If the development of a horse
takes an unexpected turn into an undesirable direction,
Erich Single does not have to rely on horse
dealers. “Word has got around that I will sell a
decent horse occasionally for less money. If the riders
are satisfied, they pass this information on.
”The Swabian always returns!”
Ruxandra by Rubinstein/World Cup was the second
mare to come to Pfalzgrafenweiler – it was
the said dressage mare! She did not have much of
a dressage career however. Instead she helped Michael
Jung win the German Young Rider Championship
title in eventing! In the early 1990s Ruxandra
was the beginning of a relationship between
Erich Single and the mare’s breeder Hans-Heinrich
Müller, Stade. A relationship that still exists today
according to Hans-Heinrich Müller’s wife Christine.
Once Müller told him, “Many say they will return,
only a few do. The Swabian however returns again
and again.” Erich Single has driven the 700 kilometers
to the Hanoverian breeding area many a
time. Verden’s auction is a must; he visits the
shows in Stade’s breeding area as often as he can.
Erich Single bought his third Hanoverian broodmare
Wahira by Wolkenstein II/ Bolero at Paul Nodop’s
farm. Her performance test result is printed in messing
and decorates a wall in Pfalzengrafenweiler. It
reads almost all nines and tens! Most Hanoverians
came to Pfalzgrafenweiler as foals or yearlings just
like these three Hanoverian mares did.
Part of Erich Single’s continuity is to stay at the
same hotel when attending shows on the Dobrock,
in Freiburg or Ihlenworth and Krautsand. By chance
he met Uwe Dreesmann from Hesel at just this
hotel. The dam of Shutterfly called Famm was then
a young mare and became Hanoverian Mare of the
Year later on. A deep friendship developed out of
the two men meeting at the hotel and resulted in
Graefin by Graf Top/Silvio who is Famm´s one and
only granddaughter so far to live in Pfalzgrafenweiler.
She is in foal to Perigueux. “Dam lines are
important to me,” the successful breeder explains
who sees his breeding program as specialized in
dressage and jumping with an emphasis on the
latter. He does not specifically try to breed an event
horse in spite of his friendship to Michael Jung.
“This seems too difficult,” Erich Single says. Nonetheless
the halfbred racehorse mare Landana by
Colon xx/Hohritt xx (breeder: Bernhard Revens, Le-
xow) moved into the barn of Erich Single. Landana
is a representative of the dam line of Andreas
Dibowski’s Olympic horse Leonas Dancer and Butts
Leon. This year Landana produced a foal by Grey
Top, “I see this dam line as an interesting addition
to my breeding program.” Up to now ten of Erich
Singles mares represent the Hanoverian colors in
Baden-Württemberg.
Erich Single uses stallions of which most have proven
their abilities in competition like Stolzenberg,
Perigueux, Breitling W and Damsey. He focuses on
sport horses for higher demands. Bundeschampionat
successes and competition successes at the Slevel
confirm the considerations of the breeder;
they do not include only performance aspects
though, “They have to look like horses and have a
good disposition, too.”
“I still have two goals,” Erich single says with sparkling
eyes, “to have a licensed stallion in Verden
and to breed a Hanoverian event horse for Michael
Jung.” These goals are by no means far fetched. I
would like to bring the Hanoverian Support Association
FRH to Baden-Württemberg. I am not going
to do anything crazy though. It has to be a good
fit,” he adds with a smile. Erich Single is – after all
– a Swabian! n
The collection included 85 pre-selected riding
horses of which 75 sold on the auction block.
62 participants exhibited dressage qualities and
24 jumping ability. Twelve of them proved to not
only have dressage- and/or jumper talent but also
be suitable for recreational riding. The Hanoverians
that were described as ”suitable for recreational
riding” displayed remarkable calmness, strong nerves
and easy rideability. Highlighting these special
qualities is fairly new to Verden’s auction program.
The entire collection attracted great interest in foreign
countries. 46 Hanoverians found new homes
outside Germany. It was “Love at first sight” for a
customer from Chile who won an exciting bidding
duel, “My decision was made after having test-
A buying group from Finland was overjoyed. They
for 28,000 Euros. Photos: Ernst
ridden Go for Gold. I really wanted this horse!” His
balanced basic gaits were not all that convinced
the customer from Chile; the riding comfort of the
four-year old also impressed her. Go for Gold by
Goldfever II/Landfriese (breeder: Heinrich Bloemer,
Dinklage; exhibitor: Claudia Schroeder, Grossenkneten)
came to Verden with a victory in a riding
horse class. Ursula Müller who the customer advisor
for Spain and Chile advised the buyer. Mrs.
Müller has attended to customers from Spanish
speaking regions for more than 15 years. Being
impressed by the high quality of the dressage horses
the customer from Chile also invested in two
other dressage talents that will be trained in
Chile carefully and in accordance with the
classical way of riding.
Betty by Baroncelli/Sherwood (breeder/exhibitor:
Heinz Koppelmann, Drochtersen) had
already impressed with her very lofty and
swinging movement and her good rideability
at the photo/video date for the summer-auction
participants. She presented herself in a
relaxed and calm fashion during the training’s
period which turned her into a very attractive
commodity for recreational riders. In addition
to her dressage ability she never blinked an
eye when she was faced with opening umbrellas
and tarps with water. She impressed
with her calmness and her intelligence. Everyone
involved quickly realized that Betty’s
talents were no longer a secret. Anett Müller
rode Betty and was very excited about the
four-year old’s attitude towards the training.
“It was a joy to ride this horse every day,”
she raved. Buyers from Denmark held the final
bid of 28,000 Euros on this so even-tempered
mare.
The jumping cadre consisted of a well-selected
group of 24 talented horses. Customer
advisor Thomas Schoenig was very satisfied
with the collection, “A small but high-quality
group of jumpers.” Anton by Argentinus/
Landadel (breeder/exhibitor: Hermann Hoelscher,
Gehrde) was the top seller. The fiveyear
old gelding joined the auction-training
program well prepared and continued to develop
beautifully under auction rider Roman
Duchac. A loyal auction customer and horse
expert from Great Britain held the last bid on
this exceptional talent at Euro 33,000.00.
Auction manager Joerg-Wilhelm Wegener
said with excitement, “This was a very good
auction. We had a broad and well paid for
top group of horses; the foreign share was
very high. Our entire team did excellent
work.” Out of the 75 Hanoverians offered for
sale 18 sold between 11,000 and 14,999 Euros;
25 Hanoverians sold for more than
15,000 Euros. 29 horses will remain in Germany
and 46 will cross Germany’s borders to
foreign countries. The Republic of China
bought 9 Hanoverians being the largest contingent
followed by Demark, France and
Switzerland with four purchases each. n
Riding Batch
Steffen Frahm was awarded the Golden
Batch for his accomplishments in front of
the great backdrop at the Rider Days in
Elmlohe. He earned most of his S-level
successes with privately owned sire Damsey
by Dressage Royal/Ritual (breeder:
Stallion Station Kothe, Niederstrich). Steffen
Frahm competed the stallion not only
in the final of the Bundeschampionate in
Warendorf but also at the World Championships
for young dressage horses in Verden
and in the Nürnberg Burg Cup in
Breeding
Top quality
in the USA
Three stallions were licensed during the inspection
trip. Hanoverians bred in the US demonstrated a high
level of quality at the following mare inspection and
foal registration sites.
By Dr. Werner Schade
34 The Hanoverian 09|2012
Each year the summer inspection trip in the USA
begins with the stallion licensing on Hilltop
Farm. The conditions and the organization of the
event are excellent. A total of five stallions were
presented. Three were licensed; two dressage and
one jumper stallion. The first dressage stallion was
Donnegan by Don Frederico/Walt Disney I out of
the breeding program of Jürgen Westermann in
Salzhausen. Karen Thomson from Canada owns
him. Donnegan is a powerful and important sire
with a very masculine expression and a very good
best fillies auf this year‘s inspection tour. Photo: Private
topline. This well-constructed stallion showed powerful
movement in all basic gaits. A very good
ability for collection was clearly visible in the trot
and the canter. Donnegan has proven his performance
ability in dressage competitions with many
successes at the S-level.
The second licensed dressage stallion is also a representative
of the D-line, Doctor Wendell MF by
Don Principe/Sandro Hit bred and owned by Maryanna
Haymon, USA. This stallion impressed with
his typy and blood-influenced appearance. He
showed outstanding movement in the canter and
in the walk. His sire Don Principe who is already
trained to Grand Prix has proven more than once
that he passes the high quality of his walk on to
his offspring. As Doctor Wendell MF carries a high
share of blood he could also be of great interest to
the breed as a refining stallion.
Vive Victory by Viva Voltaire/Akzent II bred and owned
by Knight’s Gate Hanoverians in Canada is the
third licensed stallion. He impressed the judging
committee as a jumper. This large-framed stallion
with his athletic looking profile demonstrated above
average moving qualities in the trot and in the
canter as well as a very good walk. He certainly
impressed with almost unlimited potential in his
predisposition for jumping. It is exciting that his
sire Viva Voltaire by Voltaire/Grannus (breeder:
Arend Kamphorst, Prieros) who is stationed in Canada
seems to be more and more making a name
for himself as a jumper horse producer in North
America.
New ideas
The foals and mares that were presented on this
inspection tour were overall of very high quality.
One of the best foals was a filly by Don Darius/Liberty
Gold, bred and owned by Otto-Rudolf Fuchs,
Hilton Farm, USA. It is exciting to see that the owner
of the sire Don Darius is very successful with
the use of his own stallion. The ‘Futurity Concept’
proved to be a good innovative idea. It allows for
yearlings and two-year olds to be presented during
the inspection tour. The presentation of these
young horses worked out well and increased the
numbers at the individual inspection sites. After a
successful introduction we now expect this project
to be expanded in future. n
