BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT Please see Explanatory Memorandum for Guidance (additional sheets may be used to a one page maximum) PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project aims at the strengthening of Belarusian museums as centres of national identification and democratic development. It will combine three modules: • A permanent working group of participants of different museums of Belarus which will take place at least seven times during the the year for one day with final round table discussion between ICOM Belarus, ICOM Germany and German Association of Museums; • two capacity-building seminars of two days • publication of bilingual (German and Russian) handbook (with English introduction) of working materials and additional CD. Working group and seminars will be lead by German museum experts. Purposes: 1. Strengthening the capacity of Belarusian museum professionals in essential functions that any museum has to perform to fulfil its mission; 2. Development and implementation of international professional standards for museums as social and educational institutions. 3. Encouraging international collaboration between museums and museum professionals 4. Strengthening of international network structures. 5. Providing of broad discussion on current concerns and prospects for museum development and museum-to-museum partnership. Handbook and CD: During the project will be realized a German-Russian handbook and additional CD which will be devoted to current issues of museum practice and analyse the museums’s role as social and communicative institution, focussing Belarus. Museums have always been points of access to knowledge about cultures and centres of formal and non-formal education; they contribute to mutual understanding and social cohesion, and as are essential for sustainable human development. They help us to understand where our societies come from, and apprehend our common future. Having in mind this background, the edition will focus on the problem of interaction of museums and society and their role as centres of knowledge and education This project will be seen as a landmark to strengthen the capacity of Belarusian museums in responding to the challenges of the XXI century.
