PROJECT DESCRIPTION<br />
<strong>The</strong> project aims at the strengthening <strong>of</strong> <strong>Belarus</strong>ian museums as<br />
centres <strong>of</strong> national identification and democratic development.<br />
It will combine three modules:<br />
• A permanent working group <strong>of</strong> participants <strong>of</strong> different<br />
museums <strong>of</strong> <strong>Belarus</strong> which will take place at least seven<br />
times during the the year for one day with final round table<br />
discussion between ICOM <strong>Belarus</strong>, ICOM Germany and<br />
German Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Museums</strong>;<br />
• two capacity-building seminars <strong>of</strong> two days<br />
• publication <strong>of</strong> bilingual (German and Russian) handbook<br />
(with English introduction) <strong>of</strong> working materials and<br />
additional CD.<br />
Working group and seminars will be lead by German museum<br />
experts.<br />
Purposes:<br />
1. Strengthening the capacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Belarus</strong>ian museum pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />
in essential functions that any museum has to perform to fulfil its<br />
mission;<br />
2. Development and implementation <strong>of</strong> international pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
standards for museums as social and educational institutions.<br />
3. Encouraging international collaboration between museums and<br />
museum pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />
4. Strengthening <strong>of</strong> international network structures.<br />
5. Providing <strong>of</strong> broad discussion on current concerns and prospects<br />
for museum development and museum-to-museum partnership.<br />
Handbook and CD:<br />
During the project will be realized a German-Russian handbook and<br />
additional CD which will be devoted to current issues <strong>of</strong> museum<br />
practice and analyse the museums’s role as social and<br />
communicative institution, focussing <strong>Belarus</strong>.<br />
<strong>Museums</strong> have always been points <strong>of</strong> access to knowledge about<br />
cultures and centres <strong>of</strong> formal and non-formal education; they<br />
contribute to mutual understanding and social cohesion, and as are<br />
essential for sustainable human development. <strong>The</strong>y help us to<br />
understand where our societies come from, and apprehend our<br />
common future. Having in mind this background, the edition will<br />
focus on the problem <strong>of</strong> interaction <strong>of</strong> museums and society and<br />
their role as centres <strong>of</strong> knowledge and education<br />
This project will be seen as a landmark to strengthen the capacity<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Belarus</strong>ian museums in responding to the challenges <strong>of</strong> the XXI<br />
century.<br />

which will <strong>of</strong>fer more than a half <strong>of</strong> the budget. <strong>The</strong>refore and to be able to spread the handbook in<br />
<strong>Belarus</strong> and the surrounding region, the languages <strong>of</strong> publication will be German and Russian.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> additional CD will provide the printed material <strong>of</strong> the handbook to use as samples and forms for own<br />
projects on any PC.<br />
• Edition: 500 copies, 200 pages, brochure with text, photos, graphics etc., editor: ICOM <strong>Belarus</strong>, Institute<br />
