Dear Alums and Friends<br />

of <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong>:<br />

It’s my pleasure to report back<br />

to you on a wonderful year made<br />

possible through your generous<br />

support. Once again our seniors<br />

did well;<br />

• 100% graduated with<br />

Regents Diplomas<br />

• 22% earned Regents<br />

Diplomas with Distinction<br />

• One senior earned a full<br />

scholarship to Brown<br />

• Two will be Lasallian<br />

Scholars at Manhattan<br />

College, majoring in<br />

engineering<br />

• Another senior is attending<br />

at the US Naval Academy<br />

• 97% are college bound<br />

This is an extraordinary level of<br />

accomplishment for an inner city<br />

secondary school. The Schott<br />

<strong>Report</strong> tells the alternative story<br />

when a young person does<br />

not have access to a quality<br />

education. In this parallel world<br />

only 27% of African Americans<br />

graduate from high school. You<br />

and <strong>Loughlin</strong> provide a window<br />

of opportunity for young people<br />

grossly underserved by the<br />

educational structures available<br />

to them. In our Lasallian view<br />

an education that provides for a<br />

young persons success in this<br />

world is salvific.<br />

This year and moving forward<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> has committed<br />

to strengthen its academic<br />

programming. We added an AP<br />

Environmental Science course<br />

to the curriculum and this in the<br />

2011-12 academic year we are<br />

adding an AP Physics course.<br />

The result will be to have one or<br />

more AP courses in each of the<br />

academic disciplines. Through<br />

our Admissions Director we are<br />

recruiting a freshman class that is<br />

stronger academically. Scholarship<br />

and grant-in-aid allocations<br />

support this effort. Currently 55%<br />

of our students receive some<br />

form of tuition assistance with<br />

an average award of $3200.00.<br />

Your generosity helps to keep a<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> education accessible to<br />

students and their families<br />

The entire school community is<br />

very proud of the Cozzi-Murray<br />

Performing Arts Center and<br />

Lancer Music Studio, which<br />

opened in April. Since moving<br />

in, students have taken over<br />

the space with instruments and<br />

other tools of the trade. Both<br />

instrumentalists and vocalists<br />

have been recorded, resulting in<br />

great insight and improvement.<br />

The director of the program is<br />

spending the summer learning the<br />

computerized console for mixing<br />

and controlling sound so no time<br />

will be wasted come September.<br />

Some of our more recent alums<br />

have dropped in to admire this<br />

new addition to our venerable<br />

facility and have offered rave<br />

reviews. The center will play a<br />

significant role in our recruitment<br />

efforts this fall.<br />

In June, the Board of Governors<br />

endorsed our strategic plan. This<br />

summer, my administrative team,<br />

the Principal, Admissions and<br />

Development Directors as well as<br />

the Directors of Individual Giving<br />

and Marketing/Communication,<br />

has spent time crafting action<br />

plans to implement the plan’s<br />

broad goals strategies centered<br />

on finance, development, facilities<br />

and programs. All these efforts<br />

are directed at achieving the goals<br />

articulated in the strategic plan:<br />

Making <strong>Loughlin</strong> sustainable for<br />

the long term and the school of<br />

choice for the families we serve<br />

and would like to serve.<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> John <strong>Loughlin</strong> Council Luncheon<br />

This year’s <strong>Bishop</strong> John <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

Council Luncheon was held on<br />

December 4, <strong>2010</strong> at Giando’s on<br />

the Water in the Williamsburg section<br />

of Brooklyn. This year’s event was<br />

all about our some of our greatest<br />

assets- our students and the alumni<br />

whose generosity keeps <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

thriving. Christmas music welcomed<br />

our guests as they entered the room,<br />

performed by Meghan Deberry ‘11<br />

on the violin, Grace Brancale ‘12 on<br />

the flute, and songs sung by Jessica<br />

Concepcion ‘11. Andrew Paige ‘11 and<br />

Melissa Tropnas ‘12. They expressed<br />

their gratitude to our alumni for the<br />

quality Lasallian education they<br />

shared at <strong>Loughlin</strong>. Armand Keller ‘11<br />

produced a video story on a day in<br />

Junior and Senior <strong>Loughlin</strong> students<br />

the life of a <strong>Loughlin</strong> student. Several<br />

other students hosted the afternoon,<br />

sharing their <strong>Loughlin</strong> experiences,<br />

their plans for the future, and their<br />

gratitude with alumni and supporters<br />

in attendance. Brian Connolly ‘73,<br />

Vice President of <strong>Loughlin</strong>’s Board of<br />

Governors, emceed the event keeping<br />

all in focus, moving the program along,<br />

and ensuring an upbeat tone. This<br />

event also launched a new initiative<br />

called the “Save a Student” Campaign.<br />

This program targets 9th, 10th, and<br />

11th graders with academic potential,<br />

with the goal of providing financial<br />

assistance to their families so that they<br />

may continue attending <strong>Loughlin</strong> in the<br />

upcoming academic year.<br />

HALL OF FAME<br />

Lion Alumni Athletes, legendary coach<br />

and students honored at Hall of Fame<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

held its Twenty-first <strong>Annual</strong> Athletic<br />

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on<br />

Saturday, May 7, 2011. The Hall of<br />

Fame Committee formally inducted<br />

seven former <strong>Loughlin</strong> athletes. Those<br />

honored were: Frank Thomas ’51<br />

(Track), Elisa Edwards ’99 (Track),<br />

Neave Maynard ’91 (Handball),<br />

Michael Boynton ’00 (Basketball),<br />

Clifford Strong ’98 (Basketball), Major<br />

Irving Fannell ’73 (Track) and Edward<br />

Haggerty ’64 (Swimming). The day<br />

started out with a Mass followed by a<br />

Cocktail Hour, the Induction Ceremony<br />

and a Dinner. Brother Dennis<br />

Cronin FSC, President of <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>, welcomed all present.<br />

The Honorees were presented with<br />

Hall of Fame plaques by Brother<br />

Dennis. Each of the inductees<br />

gave a short acceptance speech<br />

expressing their appreciation to<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> for the fine education<br />

and training that they received in<br />

both the class room and from the<br />

coaching in their particular sport.<br />

The late Harry Benvenuto, the<br />

legendary Swimming and Water Polo<br />

Coach at <strong>Loughlin</strong> for over twenty-five<br />

years was also memorialized with a<br />

special ceremony that concluded with<br />

the unveiling of a special plaque in<br />

his memory. Many of his swimmers<br />

and water polo players were there to<br />

honor him. Kevin Gallagher ’66 spoke<br />

on behalf of the many swimmers<br />

present to honor their coach.<br />

The Nugent Brothers Awards – given<br />

to two senior student–athletes were<br />

presented to Jaylen Henderson<br />

’11 and Flora White ’11. The award<br />

is given for exemplifying Christian<br />

character and athletic achievement.<br />

The ceremony concluded with a<br />

delicious dinner in the cafeteria<br />

and a whole lot of reminiscing<br />

about those “great old times”.<br />

Charlie O’Donnell ’59 acted as<br />

Master of Ceremonies for the day.<br />

2011 Lion/Lancer Golf Outing Re-Cap<br />

On June 23, 2011, <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

held its fifteenth annual Lion/Lancer<br />

Open Golf Outing at Middle Island<br />

Country Club. Despite the weather,<br />

145 golfers participated in this year’s<br />

outing. It was a smashing success<br />

thanks to <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> and St.<br />

Augustine alumni and friends.<br />

Even with clouds and gray skies, our<br />

registration area welcomed golfers as<br />

they made their way up the hill from<br />

the country club’s parking area to the<br />

clubhouse, with smiles on their faces<br />

ready to face the day and hopefully<br />

even go home with prizes. Golfers<br />

checked in, picked up their goodie<br />

bags, which contained an assortment<br />

of things such as colognes, lotions,<br />

golf balls, a cooler and more, and<br />

then headed into the clubhouse where<br />

they enjoyed a continental breakfast.<br />

For many golfers, just the joy of<br />

meeting with their old classmates<br />

and receiving their goodie bags made<br />

the day get off to a great start.<br />

The shotgun start was at 10:30 am,<br />

and with it our golfers were off to<br />

their assigned holes and greens to<br />

begin their fun-filled day. As the day<br />

went on, the clouds gathered and it<br />

began to rain. After about a half hour,<br />

the rain subsided and our golfers<br />

headed back out from the clubhouse<br />

to brave the elements once more<br />

with the hopes of completing their<br />

18 holes. Unfortunately, a few hours<br />

later it began to rain again and most<br />

foursomes were only able to complete<br />

12 holes of golf. Although the rain<br />

had dampened their clothes, shoes,<br />

and golf bags, everyone refused to<br />

let the rain dampen the high spirits<br />

of the day. The staff at Middle Island<br />

Country Club moved up cocktails<br />

and dinner an hour earlier with ease<br />

and once our golfers dried off, they<br />

convened in the upstairs dining room.<br />

Throughout the cocktail reception<br />

and dinner student volunteers, most<br />

of whom were 2011 graduates, sold<br />

raffle tickets to participants. During<br />

the dinner ceremony, attendees heard<br />

from John Klemm ’65, Director of<br />

Development, as well as Br. Dennis<br />

Cronin, FSC, President of <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>. Both thanked everyone<br />

for their continued support of this<br />

event, as well as their support<br />

of the students and teachers at<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong>. Several prizes<br />

were raffled off, including items<br />

such as golf clubs, cash prizes, golf<br />

bags, and alumni merchandise.<br />

We would like to give a special<br />

thank you to our event sponsors,<br />

staff and student volunteers,<br />

and our faithful attendees to this<br />

event. We look forward to seeing<br />

familiar and new faces at our 16th<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> Golf Outing in 2012!<br />

REUNIONS<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> McDonell Reunion<br />

On Saturday, April 16 the <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

McDonnell <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> reunion for all<br />

the anniversary classes was held at St.<br />

Francis <strong>School</strong> for the Deaf. St. Francis<br />

is the former <strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>. We had about 240 attendees.<br />

The day included a welcoming<br />

light brunch of coffee, tea, cheese,<br />

crackers, vegetables and dip.<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell merchandise was<br />

available for those who wished to<br />

purchase fleece jackets, t-shirts, cloth<br />

bags...all with the <strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell<br />

name or logo. Many were lined up to<br />

get merchandise for themselves and<br />

others who could not attend. The<br />

gym was filled with memorabilia from<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong>’s. There were mannequins<br />

dressed in <strong>Bishop</strong>’s uniforms and<br />

gym suits, old sweatshirts and school<br />

blazers on display.<br />

Photos were being taken all day by<br />

Rob Munroe, a <strong>Loughlin</strong> graduate who<br />

is now a wonderful photographer.<br />

BMHS Reunion 2011<br />

Mass was celebrated by Rev. Kevin<br />

Sweeney in the Msgr. Ross auditorium.<br />

This was followed by a welcoming<br />

ceremony with Mary Macchiarola ‘58<br />

as the M.C. Gintare Malinauskaite,<br />

a Music teacher at <strong>Loughlin</strong>, played<br />

the piano and <strong>Loughlin</strong> students<br />

led the singing. Doris Jean-Charles,<br />

a graduate of <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong>,<br />

now attending Fordham University,<br />

addressed the <strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell<br />

women on what it meant to her to<br />

have a scholarship at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong>.<br />

Maureen Moss McInerney ‘66 spoke,<br />

encouraging all of her sister graduates<br />

to contribute to the <strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell<br />

Scholarship Fund.<br />

Finally, there was a wonderful catered<br />

dinner held in the cafeteria where<br />

friends and classmates enjoyed the<br />

food and the conversation with women<br />

they had not seen for many years.<br />

For Its 28th <strong>Annual</strong> Reunion<br />

On Saturday, October 16, <strong>2010</strong>, alumni<br />

came back to their alma mater for their<br />

high school reunion. The day began<br />

with Mass, followed by an anniversary<br />

suite for the Class of 1960, while other<br />

reunion attendees enjoyed an all-class<br />

alumni reception in the cafeteria. The<br />

afternoon continued with a welcome<br />

ceremony. During the ceremony, John<br />

Klemm ’65, Director of Development,<br />

presented a slideshow highlighting<br />

memories from the anniversary<br />

classes that included school<br />

happenings as well as what was going<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>2010</strong> reunion<br />

on in the world during their graduation<br />

year. Each class could be heard<br />

cheering as their year was displayed<br />

on the big screen. The Class of 1960<br />

presented the school with a Class Gift<br />

of $94,535. The <strong>Loughlin</strong> Band, led by<br />

Louis Maffei, played a medley of songs<br />

from the various decades represented<br />

at the reunion. After a rousing rendition<br />

of the school song, alumni headed to<br />

the cafeteria for cocktails and dinner.<br />

More than Just a Degree<br />

Student Spotlight: Andrew Paige<br />

Brustman Scholarship Winner Goes To Annapolis<br />

5 am wakeup? No problem, that’s<br />

when Andrew Paige’11, a Ray<br />

Brustman Scholarship recipient, will<br />

be starting his days at the United<br />

States Navel Academy at Annapolis,<br />

Maryland this summer to become<br />

a member of the Academy Class of<br />

2015. Last summer, Andrew attended<br />

the American Legions’ Boys State of<br />

New York Program participating in<br />

classes in U.S. Government and the<br />

role citizen’s play, leadership and team<br />

work classes, and a public speaking<br />

skills work shop.<br />

Andrew was drawn to the Navy<br />

because of the flexibility and the high<br />

caliber of academics, especially the<br />

engineering. His admission required all<br />

the standard essays and applications<br />

as well as fitness test and a congressional<br />

nomination. Post graduation,<br />

Andrew will be serving our country for<br />

five years.<br />

Andrew has been an incredible leader<br />

at <strong>Loughlin</strong>. He has served as the<br />

student body vice-president and the<br />

National Honor Society with an 87.7<br />

cumulative average while attending<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>. Andrew remains most grateful<br />

to the St. Augustine Diocesan <strong>High</strong><br />

Andre Paige ‘11<br />

<strong>School</strong> Alumni Association for their<br />

support of the Brustman Scholarship.<br />

He writes, “I would like to sincerely<br />

thank you all from the bottom of my<br />

heart for everything you’ve done for<br />

me and every other <strong>Loughlin</strong> student<br />

who receives your support.”<br />

Education Conference<br />

Concepcion – spoke and presented<br />

their award winning video at the<br />

“Educating for Democracy in a Digital<br />

Age” conference held at Georgetown<br />

Law in Washington D.C. on March 29.<br />

Their video, “Random Acts of<br />

Kindness”, highlights the civic and<br />

personal benefits derived by helping<br />

others no matter how big or small<br />

the task. It won Best of Show in the<br />

iCivics and Virtue Foundation digital<br />

storytelling initiative.<br />

Justice Sandra Day O’Connor<br />

and Arne Duncan, Secretary<br />

of Education, were the keynote<br />

speakers. Conference panelists and<br />

moderators included digital pioneers<br />

and education policymakers from<br />

across the country, including Harvard<br />

Education professor Howard Gardner<br />

and former California Secretary of<br />

Educator Bonnie Reiss.<br />

Aria, Jessica and Jennifer were invited<br />

to begin the conference with The<br />

Pledge of Allegiance, presented their<br />

video and spoke about conveying<br />

their message of community service<br />

and civic duty through the use of<br />

Meet the Hendersons<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> has had the unique opportu-<br />

nity to educate generations of young<br />

people. Once such story is that of the<br />

Hendersons. This family has invested<br />

in sending their 4 children to <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>. Three of the siblings, Janele<br />

‘04, Ozzie ‘08, and Jaylen ‘11, have all<br />

graduated from <strong>Loughlin</strong>. The similarities<br />

don’t end there however. All three<br />

also maintained perfect attendance<br />

while attending school from their<br />

formative years. If that wasn’t enough,<br />

they have all been stand-out students<br />

while attending <strong>Loughlin</strong>, representing<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> as excellent student athletes.<br />

While Janele led the Lady Lions in<br />

basketball, Ozzie and Jaylen excelled<br />

in track and field. As juniors, they all<br />

received the James Bonilla Award,<br />

which honors two juniors who have<br />

added to the high school experience of<br />

others by their participation in athletics<br />

and other extracurricular activities.<br />

During their respective senior years<br />

in <strong>Loughlin</strong>, Janele, Ozzie, and Jaylen<br />

were all awarded the Nugent Brothers<br />

Award. This award honors the athletic<br />

achievement of John ‘40, James ‘43,<br />

is given to two seniors who exemplify<br />

Christian character and outstanding<br />

athletic achievement.<br />

The youngest of the Hendersons,<br />

Christian, is on track to fill the big<br />

shoes his older siblings have left for<br />

him to fill. Christian will begin his junior<br />

year at <strong>Loughlin</strong> this fall.<br />

A dedication ceremony for the<br />

Cozzi-Murray Performing Arts Center<br />

& Lancer Music Studio was held on<br />

Sunday, April 10th. At the opening,<br />

students performed for an audience of<br />

alumni from <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong>, <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

McDonnell, and St. Augustine <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>s.<br />

Michael Murray ‘63, and his wife Jane,<br />

a <strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell alumna, for<br />

whom the center is named, maintain<br />

a strong connection to their alma<br />

maters. “These schools were very<br />

good to us in terms of our growth and<br />

our development,” he said. “One of<br />

the things that <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> and<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell taught us is to help<br />

others. And what better way to give to<br />

others than to give to the high school<br />

that taught us those values.”<br />

Jim Flaherty ‘65, St. Augustine <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> was the master of ceremony.<br />

He serves on the board of governors<br />

for <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> and volunteered<br />

to help raise money for this project.<br />

Nearly 100 alumni from St. Augustine<br />

donated and raised $150,000.<br />

“The logic behind this was to provide<br />

a music facility that existing students<br />

can take advantage of for their musical<br />

talent and to give <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> a<br />

recruiting edge,” he said.<br />

opening,” said Alexandria Guy ‘11, senior.<br />

“And just listening to the alumni’s<br />

stories made me feel like I was part of<br />

something amazing.”<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> now hosts the Brooklyn<br />

Philharmonic student competition for<br />

high schools throughout Brooklyn.<br />

This year, vocalists from <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> received third place in the<br />

competition. Louis Maffei, chair of<br />

the arts department believes that the<br />

new space will help current music<br />

program expand.He would like to invite<br />

professionals to use the center and<br />

in exchange teach students. Another<br />

plan he has for the center is to record<br />

music with students from China to<br />

expand students’ experiences.<br />

Renovations at LaSalle Hall<br />

The smell of fresh paint and the<br />

sounds of a busy construction<br />

crew echo the empty halls of<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong>’s LaSalle Hall the<br />

boarding program sponsored by<br />

Boys Hope Girls Hope. Renovations<br />

are in motion to restore and give<br />

the dorm rooms a new face-lift,<br />

as well as the renovation of two<br />

additional floors to accommodate<br />

eleven new students this falls.<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> in partnership with Boys Hope<br />

Girls Hope Foundation are preparing<br />

to accept eleven more students to<br />

the boarding program this year. The<br />

program was only able to board<br />

twenty-one students in the past. Due<br />

to the success of the program and<br />

the demand to help more qualified<br />

under-served male students, the<br />

expansion at LaSalle Hall became an<br />

issue that both <strong>Loughlin</strong> and Boys<br />

Hope Girls Hope wanted to address.<br />

With the financial support from<br />

the <strong>Loughlin</strong> Alumni Association<br />

Foundation and the Peter Jay Sharp<br />

Foundation, the project to expand<br />

housing for more students became a<br />

reality. The foundations contributed<br />

$90,000.00 in donations, which made<br />

the renovations to the third and fourth<br />

floor possible. The school and Boys<br />

Hope Girl Hope can now open the<br />

program to more students in need.<br />

“A boarding program for students who<br />

will thrive in a structured environment<br />

is not only consistent with <strong>Loughlin</strong>’s<br />

mission, it enhances the mission.<br />

Students can move from a structured,<br />

pleasant living environment to a<br />

structured, challenging academic<br />

environment where the adults,<br />

teachers and residential, share a<br />

common vision which promotes the<br />

students growth and development.<br />

The support of the <strong>Loughlin</strong> Alumni<br />

and Peter Jay Sharp Foundations<br />

are really extending the reach of a<br />

creative, innovative, and transformative<br />

program.” Brother Dennis explained.<br />

The construction commenced the<br />

day after school was closed for<br />

the academic year. A completely<br />

restored third and fourth floor is in<br />

full construction to make more dorm<br />

rooms available by September. The<br />

project will include new bathrooms,<br />

dorm room expansion and an overall<br />

upgrade to the living space at the hall.<br />

“The construction of the 3rd and<br />

4th floors is moving forward as<br />

scheduled and has an anticipated<br />

substantial completion date of August<br />

26th 2011. Painting and flooring<br />

is under way alongside of framing<br />

and plumbing. No problems have<br />

been encountered and none are<br />

foreseeable,” says the Director of<br />

Maintenance, Gerald Pointing.<br />

LaSalle Hall, erected in 1881, is<br />

a historic landmark, which once<br />

housed Brooklyn’s first three <strong>Bishop</strong>s,<br />

including the high school’s namesake<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> John <strong>Loughlin</strong>. Later LaSalle<br />

Hall was gifted to the De LaSalle<br />

Christian Brothers, who were relocated<br />

in 1932, for the first renovation to<br />

convert the house into dormitories.<br />

Today, the tradition to provide the<br />

best Catholic education of <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

John <strong>Loughlin</strong> and the continued<br />

teachings of the LaSallian Education,<br />

“Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve”, still<br />

resonates through the halls of LaSalle.


CLASS NOTES<br />

Thomas Henry ’39 (R.I.P.) his family<br />

sent us comments after he passed<br />

away “he always cherished his experi-<br />

ence at BLMHS. It was a very positive<br />

experience for him and he had always<br />

said that. Graduating in ’39, he was<br />

present at his 65th anniversary reunion<br />

(2004). In attendance were four (4) ’39<br />

grads including his best friend, Frank<br />

McDonald. In his living room over the<br />

fireplace hung a photo that Tom was<br />

very proud of including him and the<br />

other three (3) grads from that 65th<br />

anniversary.” (Ed. note: Francis (Frank)<br />

McDonald died June 6, 2011)<br />

John A. Farrell ’40 is 88 years old,<br />

retired, and served as an Air Force<br />

officer 1942-1946.<br />

Ralph Mastoloni ’40 remembers<br />

some great teachers – Brothers Albert,<br />

Anthony, Francis, Thomas, Leo and<br />

Matthew. He has moved to Greenwich,<br />

Ct. as of July <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Francis J. Murray ’41 is approaching<br />

age 88 with reasonably good health,<br />

but had to give up golf. He is looking<br />

forward to a reunion in June 2011 with<br />

his classmates of ’41. He says they<br />

have been doing this every five years<br />

since about 1966.<br />

John G. Sweeney ’41 best remembers<br />

Br. Albert and the tennis team. He<br />

played second doubles. It was a good<br />

experience traveling to Coney Island and<br />

the Bronx on the subway for matches.<br />

This year will be 70 years since they<br />

graduated, and he would like to attend a<br />

reunion luncheon once more.<br />

Lawrence A. Schmidt ’42 (R.I.P.) his<br />

family sent comments after he passed<br />

away “he was retired – spouse Ruth –<br />

8 children – 2 are deceased Kathleen<br />

and Lawrence Jr. <strong>Loughlin</strong> was a<br />

wonderful experience – great education<br />

– super classmates and teachers<br />

- Unforgettable.”<br />

Mark A. McGowan ’43 after 60 years<br />

he still has fond memories of <strong>Loughlin</strong>.<br />

Most of all the Brothers – in particular<br />

Brother James. He remembers Brother<br />

calling him Marcus Aurelius. He had an<br />

opportunity last year to visit Rome and<br />

see statue of Marcus Aurelius on his<br />

mighty steed. Very impressive! Best<br />

wishes to <strong>Loughlin</strong>.<br />

Francis J. Palamara ’43 says that<br />

his 4 years at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> from<br />

1939 to 1943 were the years that gave<br />

him the base for the rest of his life. He<br />

learned how to study, how to live with<br />

his fellow man with integrity and honesty<br />

and it taught him how to compete.<br />

The next 3 years were service in the<br />

US Navy during 1943 to 1946 – World<br />

War II. <strong>Loughlin</strong> gave him the preparation<br />

that was invaluable during those<br />

years. He is proud to have been a<br />

founder of the Christian Brothers Boys<br />

Association that was the beginning of<br />

Alumni relations for <strong>Loughlin</strong>.<br />

Harold Thompson ’43 and his<br />

late wife Virginia have 10 children<br />

– 23 grandchildren and 4 great<br />

grandchildren.<br />

Hugh Horning ’44 has attended five<br />

colleges and universities, but the<br />

school that means the most to him<br />

is <strong>Loughlin</strong>, when it was an all-boys<br />

scholarship school of the Diocese.<br />

He learned there that you could be a<br />

scholar, be spiritual and still be a man!<br />

Thanks to the wonderful examples and<br />

dedication of the Christian Brothers.<br />

He and his wife were married 60 years.<br />

They had 6 children, 12 grandchildren<br />

and 9 great grandchildren (3 more<br />

on the way). He says they are indeed<br />

blessed!<br />

Gabriel M. Liegey, Jr. ’44 is a Deacon<br />

working at St. Patrick Church in<br />

Fairfield, Vt. He and his wife, Mary celebrated<br />

41 years of marriage. Thanks<br />

to Lou Castellano he keeps in touch<br />

with some of the classmates of June<br />

1944.<br />

Arthur Bickmeyer ’46 is a “Snowbird”<br />

– 6 months in Virginia, 6 months in<br />

Florida. He still plays tennis and golf.<br />

Henry Fairchild ’46 just celebrated<br />

65th year as alumnus and 55th year<br />

of marriage to Eileen. He is happy<br />

that the LaSalle spirit still prevails and<br />

produces fine graduates for today’s<br />

William (Bill) Seufert ’46 and his wife<br />

Claire are celebrating their sixtieth (60)<br />

wedding anniversary on January 13,<br />

2011. Both retired over twenty years<br />

ago. The family is celebrating in the<br />

Church of St. Michael with their children,<br />

grandchildren, great grandchildren<br />

and friends.<br />

Joseph B. Edden ’48 remembers<br />

stopping off each morning on the way<br />

to <strong>Loughlin</strong> at St. Casimir’s Church to<br />

visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament<br />

before getting to school. It was a great<br />

source of graces.<br />

don’t seem to contribute at a rate commensurate<br />

now grandparents to an even dozen.<br />

old – retired NYPD – wife Eleanor,<br />

Henry A. Tragert ’51 retired after 40<br />

years with General Electric, and lives<br />

on a 300 year old “gentleman’s farm”<br />

in New England. He is keeping track of<br />

his 14 grandchildren. He truly values<br />

his <strong>Loughlin</strong> education.<br />

Andrew T. Wittman Jr. ’51 retired<br />

9/30/90 after a law enforcement career<br />

of 38 + years in, Town, Suffolk County<br />

and New York State governments. Not<br />

wanting to stay at home, he ran for<br />

and was elected 5 times for a 15 year<br />

total as a trustee of the Bayport-Blue<br />

Point <strong>School</strong> Dist. As of 12/30/10 he<br />

will retire from the Eastern Suffolk<br />

BOCES Board of Ed after 6 years. He<br />

is still an active volunteer firefighter<br />

working on year 60.<br />

Edward J. Cooke ’52 says to keep<br />

on September 1, <strong>2010</strong> to Assistant<br />

Professor of Mathematics at Suffolk<br />

Robert J. Baumert ’53 offers continued<br />

congratulations to Joseph P. Dunne ’65<br />

who serves on the <strong>2010</strong> – 2011 Board of<br />

Governors of BLMHS. He further adds<br />

that Chief Dunne was the former Chief<br />

of Department (the highest uniformed<br />

member of the NYCPD), and it was an<br />

honor to serve under his command.<br />

Raymond F. Grossman ’53 tells us<br />

that Kevin and Marie Glynn hosted<br />

a cocktail party in early December<br />

at their beautiful home in Rockville<br />

Centre. Kevin’s January 1953 classmates<br />

present with their significant<br />

others were: John Gasperin, Ray<br />

Grossman, Jerry Iovane, Fred<br />

Keating, Rich Kiley, Tom Loebs, Gene<br />

O’Connor, Walt Schnell and John<br />

Vorst. A great time was had by all!<br />

Fred Keating ’53 is still in the college<br />

classroom, teaching composition<br />

and research at St. Joseph’s College<br />

(Patchogue, NY). Pat, who retired several<br />

years ago, enjoys his four grandchildren.<br />

He shares that the <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

Long Island alums got together in<br />

December at the home of Margie and<br />

Kevin Glynn and had a great time.<br />

Tom Myers ’53 says retirement is<br />

great. He volunteers at Meals-on-<br />

Wheels and a Problem Pregnancy<br />

Center. He makes the “big bucks”<br />

working as a ticket taker at Cincinnati<br />

Reds, Xavier U. basketball and U. of<br />

Cincinnati football games.<br />

Gabriel J. Trotta ’53 is retired from<br />

the field of engineering and lives in a<br />

rural scenic area of New Hampshire.<br />

In his retirement, he is known for his<br />

skill as a woodcrafter and clockmaker.<br />

He and his wife JoAnn celebrated<br />

their 50th wedding anniversary in<br />

October <strong>2010</strong> at a special parish<br />

Mass attended by family, friends and<br />

members of their parish community.<br />

The Mass was followed by a gala, funfilled<br />

party given by JoAnn and Gabe’s<br />

three children, and their spouses and<br />

participated in by all nine grandchildren,<br />

plus JoAnn and Gabe’s newest<br />

Grandson-in-law.<br />

Joseph G. Kiefer ’54 after graduating<br />

from BLMHS, he went to St. John’s<br />

University and graduated with a B.S.<br />

in Math in June ’58. He taught at<br />

St. Pascal Baylor HS in St. Albans,<br />

Queens-teaching Math for 3 years<br />

before moving to N. Babylon HS for<br />

the next 34 ½ years. He got married in<br />

’69 (moon, marriage, Mets – triple NY)<br />

and had 3 children, Joey, Kathy and<br />

Stephen. His wife is Mary Ann.<br />

Anthony Spinelli ’54 made his annual<br />

trip to LaBolle, France. He says,<br />

thank God for Br. Edwin and all of the<br />

Christian Brothers.<br />

John J. Zebrowksi ’54 is still active as<br />

a Deacon. This May is the 30th anniversary<br />

of his ordination. He would like<br />

Robert Walter ’55 is very thankful for<br />

the education he received at <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

Anthony Giampaolo ’56 and his wife<br />

Maria are happily expecting their first<br />

grandchild in March 2011. He recently<br />

retired and is spending winters at his<br />

home in Fort Myers, Fl. Expecting to<br />

reunite at the June golf outing.<br />

Thomas (Tom) J. Healy ’56 is looking<br />

forward to the Big “55” reunion this<br />

year and reconnecting with the out-oftown<br />

classmates. A highlight of every<br />

year is the annual golf outing, perhaps<br />

Tony Giampaolo, Frank Dehler, Ray<br />

Russo and I can improve our standing<br />

in the super seniors this year. Currently<br />

he is President of the Greenwich<br />

Retired Men’s Association, which<br />

involves a lot of volunteer work and is<br />

quite gratifying. Last but not least, he<br />

and his wife Kathie are looking forward<br />

to their seventh grandchild anytime<br />

now!<br />

Phil O’Mara ’56 is fully retired from<br />

college teaching, and has continued<br />

with literary research. This year he<br />

presented papers on crowds and<br />

leadership in Shakespeare and on<br />

brotherly love in the twelfth century<br />

literature of monastic reform. For<br />

spiritual reading, he has gone back to<br />

“Asking the Fathers” by Astrid Squire,<br />

from 1977. How he wishes that he<br />

could share it again with his wife Joan,<br />

who died in <strong>2009</strong>. More than ever, he<br />

is grateful to the Latin and English<br />

teachers at <strong>Loughlin</strong> and to his friends<br />

of those days. He heard lately from<br />

Steve Batthany, Fr. Patrick Mundy, and<br />

Ed Rigney, encouraging always.<br />

Donald J. Vanecek ’56 is still enjoying<br />

retirement in New Hampshire with<br />

his wife Maryann of 49 years, his<br />

three children and four grandchildren.<br />

<strong>High</strong>lights are attending the<br />

many sports events his grandchildren<br />

compete in. He sends many thanks<br />

to the good brothers for his wonderful<br />

education at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong>.<br />

Victor R. Basili ’57 is retired from<br />

the University of Maryland, where<br />

he was a Professor in the Computer<br />

Science Department for 40 years. He<br />

still works part-time at the Fraunhofer<br />

Center for Experimental Software<br />

Engineering that he started in 1997. He<br />

is married for 43 years and has 3 sons<br />

and 4 granddaughters.<br />

Peter D. Brady ’57 is fully retired after<br />

45 years in the banking industry. He<br />

has 8 grandchildren, 3 of whom are in<br />

college. He spends a good portion of<br />

his time boating, fishing, and playing<br />

Rev. James F. Fraser ’57 is now at Holy<br />

Family (Flushing) Parish, after 30 years at<br />

Holy Trinity in Whitestone. He had previously<br />

served at Holy Family from 1966-<br />

1980, and is enjoying being back there<br />

and reconnecting with old friends.<br />

Thomas J. Goodwin ’57 is currently<br />

taking graduate courses in English<br />

literature at Iona College, run by the<br />

Christian Brothers of Ireland. Like to<br />

Marco Orlando ’57 says he owes<br />

more to <strong>Loughlin</strong> than he can ever repay.<br />

You are right Br. Dennis when you<br />

say in your letter “you got it right.”<br />

James Orenga ’58-he is blessed to<br />

be able to contribute to the <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

Scholarship Fund every year. He truly<br />

feels that the education he received<br />

at <strong>Loughlin</strong> has given him the success<br />

that he enjoys today. He trusts everything<br />

is going well and let’s hope we<br />

have a great 2011!<br />

Stephen F. Wallner ’58 is nearly<br />

70 and is in his 47th year practicing<br />

medicine. Every time he thinks he is<br />

ready to wrap it up Brother A. Edward<br />

(A.K.A. “Big Ed) appears before him<br />

and says. “Mr. Wallner, God has given<br />

you a talent to work with the sick and<br />

you must not waste it!” He says he is a<br />

Brother’s Boy and an old soldier and<br />

he recognizes that this is not a request,<br />

it is an order. He replies, “Yes, Brother.<br />

Don’t whack me, Brother. I’ll keep<br />

working.” And so it goes for another<br />

year. Best regards in 2011!<br />

Robert G. Edmonds ’59 is still<br />

enjoying his second career teaching<br />

at SUNY Maritime College’s<br />

GBAT department and serving as the<br />

Vice-Chair.<br />

Patrick Farley ’60 says it was a joy to<br />

be at the 50th anniversary last October<br />

and to see that the level of student<br />

and teacher continues to be so high is<br />

tremendous.<br />

John J. Burns ’61 has published his<br />

book of poems entitled “Lifebeats”.<br />

Book is 221 pages in length and<br />

depicts via its poetry - the experiences<br />

and feelings that have shaped his life<br />

and that have in fact blessed it. Book<br />

William J. Fanning ’61 has been<br />

blessed and among his many blessings<br />

was the opportunity to be a<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>ite. He hopes his gift will enable<br />

another youngster to share in the<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> blessing.<br />

Matthew Lukaszewski ’61 is enjoying<br />

retirement in the beautiful mountains of<br />

central Arizona. He continues to travel<br />

to exotic countries but always is happy<br />

to return to the USA.<br />

Kenneth J. McBride ’61 is a “disabled<br />

Vietnam veteran who has been<br />

in a VA hospital since February”. Agent<br />

Orange caused diabetes 30 years ago<br />

and he is suffering from all the complications<br />

including legal blindness. His<br />

wife asks to “please keep him in your<br />

prayers.”<br />

James P. Mc<strong>Loughlin</strong> ’61 says it is<br />

hard to believe that it will be 50 years<br />

since he climbed the stage in the<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> auditorium to receive his regents<br />

diploma. He still has his <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> Student Council metal badge<br />

and a lot of fond memories. He does<br />

not know whatever happened to his<br />

reversible <strong>Loughlin</strong> school jacket but<br />

he seriously does not think it would<br />

fit. Every now and then he remembers<br />

Br. Basil Stephen who was principal<br />

during his 4 years at <strong>Loughlin</strong>. Brother<br />

was firm but fair and he thinks he<br />

detected a gleam of pride in his eyes<br />

as he was handed his diploma. He<br />

fervently hopes to see him again!<br />

Robert C. Sloane ’61 is continuing as<br />

an Executive Job Search Coach, as<br />

principal and co-founder of Optimarket<br />

LLC, now in its tenth year guiding<br />

job-seeking executives to find their<br />

next opportunity in the shortest time<br />

Patrick D. Sullivan ’61 feels fortunate<br />

that he was able to attend <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

when the Brooklyn-Queens-Long<br />

Island Diocese paid the tuition. He<br />

hopes his contribution helps in a small<br />

way to carry on <strong>Loughlin</strong>’s great traditions.<br />

He is already looking forward to<br />

attending his class 50th anniversary<br />

this year.<br />

Robert Borchert ’62 has been an<br />

ordained deacon since 1982 in St.<br />

Louis, Missouri and is now serving in<br />

St. Jude Parish, Fredericksburg, VA.<br />

Patrick Byrne ’62 still appreciates<br />

seeing <strong>Loughlin</strong> do well in sports and<br />

academic activities. Students should<br />

enjoy <strong>Loughlin</strong>, as they often will say<br />

as years go by “those were the best<br />

years of my life.”<br />

Andrew Carney ’62 and his wife Ann<br />

Marie will be celebrating forty years of<br />

blissful married life, thirty-nine of which<br />

have been in Connecticut. They grew<br />

up in Brooklyn and graduated from<br />

diocesan high schools (<strong>Loughlin</strong> and<br />

St. Brendan’s) and received a great<br />

education. His memories of <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

include Br. Stephen, principal, and<br />

Br. Adrian who taught him Spanish for<br />

two years. Many other teachers and<br />

friends helped him enjoy his <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

years. Continued success to all!<br />

Steve Chmela ’62 wants to know if<br />

anyone is interested in getting a limo<br />

for the 50th in 2012 from the Suffolk<br />

Robert O. Moylan ’62 is still on the<br />

“right side of the flower bed”!!<br />

Jeff Albies ’63 retired in 2007 from<br />

William Paterson University as<br />

Associate Director of Athletics – Head<br />

Baseball Coach after 33 years.<br />

Married to his wife Andrea for 41 years,<br />

and has two daughters, Erika NYC<br />

and Ashlee, Portland, Oregon. He<br />

says <strong>Loughlin</strong> provided the framework<br />

for a pretty good life.<br />

Joseph E. Coscia ’63 says he cannot<br />

believe he will be 65 soon! He recently<br />

completed working for the <strong>2010</strong> census<br />

which he found to be a very<br />

interesting and rewarding experience.<br />

Peter J. Cunningham ’63 is First VP<br />

– Director of Investor Relations Astoria<br />

Financial Corporation.<br />

Nicholas Estavillo ’63 graduated<br />

from BLMHS – 1964-67 served in U.S.<br />

Marine Corps (1966-67 – Vietnam).<br />

1968-2007 worked for NYPD and after<br />

38 ½ years retired as Chief of Patrol,<br />

NYPD.<br />

Joseph (Joe) Staines ’63 is looking<br />

forward to his 50th anniversary<br />

reunion and he hopes to see many old<br />

friends there.<br />

Br. Vincent J. Adams, OSF ’64 says<br />

although he is a Franciscan Brother,<br />

he has the greatest respect for the<br />

Christian Brothers and lay faculty for<br />

their obvious commitment to their mission<br />

of providing a catholic education<br />

to the poor. Catholic schools do “get<br />

it right”, but while ten catholic high<br />

schools in Brooklyn alone have closed<br />

(one moved to Queens!), <strong>Loughlin</strong> has<br />

kept its doors open and continues to<br />

maintain its high standards and is a<br />

beacon of hope for the future leaders<br />

of America. He feels that the graduates<br />

should never forget our roots!<br />

Joseph M. Favuzzi ’64 has a second<br />

grandchild, Alexa Marie and feels his<br />

family is blessed when she arrived<br />

this past November. He has met<br />

other BLMHS alums in his retirement<br />

community.

to his 50th anniversary reunion!<br />

Jack Mercica ’64 remembers when<br />

the Christian Brother staff outnum-<br />

bered the non brother staff. He asks<br />

to pray for the Christian Brothers and<br />

more vocations. His daughter is a<br />

Carmelite sister.<br />

Gerard Gryski ’65 is currently at<br />

Curtis O. Liles <strong>School</strong> as Professor<br />

of Political Science, and Chair of the<br />

Department, Auburn University.<br />

Dennis Macauley ’65 says he has<br />

fond memories of meeting his wife<br />

Sheila at an afternoon dance in the<br />

cafeteria when he was 16 and she was<br />

15. That, like the fine education, was<br />

another lasting benefit that he gained<br />

by attending <strong>Loughlin</strong>.<br />

Michael J. McEnerney ’65 is still<br />

looking down at the ground and not<br />

up at it – having survived a heart<br />

attack at 42 and cancer at 44…wait-<br />

ing for God to send the locusts! He<br />

retired from the IRS and has gone to<br />

“the Dark Side” and represents folks<br />

against the IRS on occasion. Still<br />

golfing and snow birding to his house<br />

in Palm Coast, Fl. He misses <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

where some great men made some<br />

great men!!<br />

Joseph Saur ’65 said seeing Br.<br />

Dennis’ name reminded me of the<br />

afternoon spent in detention. Still a<br />

scientist with Georgia Tech Research<br />

Institute; field is computer science,<br />

specifically, as it relates to command<br />

and control. He has put 9 of his 12<br />

kids through college, and is working<br />

on the last 3!<br />

Matt Broome ’66 retired as full<br />

Professor from Fordham University.<br />

COO of Broome Associates LLC<br />

which develops educational policy for<br />

school communities as well as train<br />

school and district leaders.<br />

Christopher M. Bryan ’67 is busy as<br />

an Electrical Engineering consultant for<br />

renewable energy projects, including<br />

the Cape Wind Offshore Wind Park in<br />

Massachusetts. He says it is wonderful<br />

to read year after year about the<br />

success of <strong>Loughlin</strong>’s students!<br />

John S. Cusimano ’67 has promised<br />

$5.00 more for every year he stays<br />

alive. He says he is a <strong>Loughlin</strong> man<br />

and has learned to keep his word. He<br />

says he was not the brightest graduate,<br />

but is tenacious and perseveres<br />

against the “slings and arrows, and<br />

carries his alma mater with him to the<br />

battle of evermore.” Does not have a<br />

lot of money, but he is still here to give<br />

it. A toast to “slow & steady” who wins<br />

the race.<br />

Joseph Fennessy ’67 is a partner<br />

at Deloitte & Touche and currently<br />

Vice-Chairman of Board of Directors of<br />

South Nassau Communities Hospital.<br />

Alfred A. Connizzo ’68 is living in<br />

Florida, has his first grandchild in NY.<br />

Retired from career having owned his<br />

own business. Now he is working parttime<br />

for Homeland Security. He misses<br />

getting to reunions and golf outings.<br />

against Parkinson’s disease. Tough<br />

Charles J. Siegel ’69 is married<br />

for over 36 years to his high school<br />

sweetheart who he met at a <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

dance. He is the managing attorney<br />

for an insurance defense firm, the<br />

immediate past chair of the Tort<br />

Insurance Compensation section of<br />

the New York State Bar, and sits on<br />

the Executive Committee of the trial<br />

lawyers section of the state bar. He<br />

has three children and two grandkids,<br />

and says all is well.<br />

Jules Taylor, Jr. ’80 sends his<br />

best to the class of 1980 and other<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>ites “and the beat goes on”.<br />

He feels the spirit continues to live in<br />

all of us, and is thankful for a great<br />

education at BLMHS and 4 wonderful<br />

Dear Alumni/ae and Friends<br />

of <strong>Loughlin</strong>:<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> graduation, always a<br />

joyous occasion, was particularly<br />

inspiring this year given the success<br />

of the Class of 2011. Our seniors<br />

did themselves, their families<br />

and alma mater proud!! Through<br />

their accomplishments, achieved<br />

through dedication and hard work,<br />

the members of the Class of 2011<br />

are providing motivation and encouragement<br />

to <strong>Loughlin</strong> students<br />

coming after them.<br />

Over the last several years,<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>’s administration and faculty<br />

have enhanced the opportunities<br />

and challenges of <strong>Loughlin</strong>’s<br />

academic program, and our students<br />

have risen to the challenges:<br />

developing their talents and capabilities,<br />

achieving academic success<br />

and preparing themselves for<br />

the rigor of higher education. The<br />

“human and Christian education”<br />

received at <strong>Loughlin</strong> prepares our<br />

students for academic success as<br />

well as success in living noble and<br />

purposeful lives.<br />

Inspired by our students and eager<br />

to afford the benefits of a <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

education to generations to come,<br />

the Board of Governors and<br />

school administration have defined<br />

a Strategic Plan for <strong>Loughlin</strong> that<br />

confronts our issues as a tuitiondependent,<br />

urban school.<br />

The plan aims to attain two goals—<br />

Honoring and extending its 160<br />

year heritage, <strong>Loughlin</strong> fulfills it<br />

mission well into the future<br />

<strong>School</strong> of Choice<br />

Students and families <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

wishes to serve have compelling<br />

reasons to make <strong>Loughlin</strong> their 1st<br />

choice for high school<br />

Important milestones on the<br />

road to Sustainability have been<br />

accomplished through an agreement<br />

reached with the Diocese<br />

of Brooklyn to transfer the school<br />

building and adjacent field to<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> and to entrust<br />

all governance responsibilities<br />

for <strong>Loughlin</strong> to the Board of<br />

Governors. These actions were<br />

eagerly sought by the Board of<br />

Governors and Brother Dennis,<br />

and we are grateful to The Most<br />

Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio,<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> of Brooklyn, The Most<br />

Reverend Frank Caggiano,<br />

Auxiliary <strong>Bishop</strong> of Brooklyn,<br />

and Sister Angela Gannon,<br />

Secretary for Catholic Education<br />

and Formation, for their support<br />

in achieving these outcomes and<br />

for their confidence in <strong>Loughlin</strong>’s<br />

future.<br />

Certainly, there are challenges<br />

to achieving the ambitious goals<br />

set out in the strategic plan. And<br />

the Board of Governors and<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> is a Catholic, diocesan, college prepara-<br />

tory high school that draws its Christian perspective from the faith tradition<br />

of the Roman Catholic Church and the Lasallian tradition of the Brothers of<br />

the Christian <strong>School</strong>s. <strong>Loughlin</strong> fosters academic success, builds character,<br />

develops future leaders, and nurtures a vibrant personal relationship with God.<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> stimulates and supports a student’s quest for intellectual, spiritual,<br />

physical, moral and civic development. Students are challenged to achieve their<br />

full potential, to strive for excellence and to further their education at colleges<br />

and universities. <strong>Loughlin</strong> students, faculty and staff are committed to an inclusive<br />

community that respects diversity in its many forms and values excellence<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> values a structured environment as a<br />

in Christian values. The Lasallian tradition holds central the appreciation of<br />

each student’s uniqueness and views the teacher as a minister of the Gospel.<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> is a community of hope and stability for its students. Hope is fostered<br />

primarily through caring adults sensitive and keenly aware of the struggles and<br />

unique challenges of adolescence as experienced in urban America. Stability<br />

is rooted in good order, clearly proclaimed and justly secured through sound<br />

The curriculum and atmosphere of <strong>Loughlin</strong> are designed to meet a wide range<br />

of student skills. <strong>Loughlin</strong> students are encouraged to develop fully their personal<br />

provides an atmosphere where respect for both self and others will grow as<br />

students meet with success, resolve personal conflicts and make responsible<br />

Meet Andrew Leary<br />

In late May, <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> welcomed<br />

a new member to the Alumni and<br />

Development team. Andy has more<br />

than fifteen years of fundraising,<br />

development and public relations<br />

experience. Most recently, he led<br />

a foundation for a national nursing<br />

education organization in lower<br />

Manhattan for several years. Prior to<br />

that position, he served as the Director<br />

of Development at La Salle Academy<br />

in Manhattan for ten years. He also<br />

has spent time “in the neighborhood”<br />

at St. Joseph’s College, serving as<br />

their <strong>Annual</strong> Fund Director.<br />

Andy’s experience in fundraising<br />

and development at La Salle were<br />

impressive as he led an annual<br />

fundraising operation to grow more<br />

than 300% over the course of his<br />

tenure at the school. Andy was<br />

responsible for planned giving, a<br />

student sponsor program, the annual<br />

fund, event planning, online giving, and<br />

many other initiatives at La Salle. He is<br />

In in his words… I believe strongly in the unique mission<br />

of <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. There are<br />

few educational institutions in New York City that achieve<br />

so much with few resources. The generosity of alumni<br />

and friends make it possible for the students at BLMHS<br />

to meet and exceed all expectations and what they thought<br />

possible. I am proud to have a role in this process and I<br />

look forward to meeting the many alumni and friends<br />

who help ensure a successful future. The De La Salle<br />

Christian Brothers have proven that their education model<br />

is second to none, and I am proud to be a part of the living<br />

mission that happens each day at 357 Clermont Avenue.<br />

As the Director of Individual Giving,<br />

Andy will be working with the<br />

President, the Board of Governors, the<br />

Director of Development and others<br />

to help <strong>Loughlin</strong> raise sufficient funds<br />

to guarantee a secure future for the<br />

school. Goals will include continuing<br />

to grow our endowment resources,<br />

meet our capital improvement needs,<br />

and improve our academic program<br />

in a variety of ways. He is excited<br />

to provide opportunities for <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> alumni, St. Augustine alumni<br />

and <strong>Bishop</strong> McDonnell alumnae to<br />

support these areas of need.<br />

Why I Give:<br />

Stephen Nuccio<br />

Stephen Nuccio, class of 1969,<br />

reminisces about his years at <strong>Bishop</strong><br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

His memories are still beautifully<br />

vivid, of the years spent attending<br />

classes at his alma mater. Stephen<br />

still recaps special school events,<br />

names his favorite teachers and<br />

friends as if he were still standing<br />

next to his locker shuffling textbooks<br />

and preparing for his next class.<br />

“<strong>Loughlin</strong> provided me with a good<br />

foundation in which I felt I could excel<br />

at anything. I have great memories<br />

from my <strong>Loughlin</strong> experience.”<br />

Stephen took full advantage of the<br />

classes and activities <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

<strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> had to offer<br />

during his four years in school.<br />

He recalls his memberships in the<br />

National Honor Society and the Math<br />

Club, and being a member of the Math<br />

Team, the Student Senate, the Alumni<br />

Club, and the Public Speaking Club.<br />

He also participated on the Student<br />

Council Patrol and with LaSalle<br />

Ministries; but still had time for intramural<br />

sports all four years at <strong>Loughlin</strong>.<br />

After graduating from <strong>Loughlin</strong> with<br />

honors, Stephen Nuccio attended City<br />

College of New York and graduated<br />

with a BA in Economics and went on<br />

to get his MBA at Baruch College.<br />

“<strong>Loughlin</strong> was my second family.<br />

They took care of me.<br />

Sometimes I think too well!<br />

When I went off to college I missed<br />

that family feeling I had with my<br />

teachers and friends. But I was<br />

completely prepared academically<br />

for the challenges faced in college<br />

and I am truly grateful to <strong>Loughlin</strong>.”<br />

Stephen is leaving an endowment<br />

to <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Loughlin</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>, because he links his success<br />

and good work ethics to his<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong> experience. He has worked<br />

for over 29 years at Guardian Life<br />

Insurance Company but has retired<br />

due to personal disabilities and now<br />

resides at his home in Hicksville, NY.<br />

“I wanted to give to other families<br />

that are economically challenged,<br />

like my family was when I attended<br />

<strong>Loughlin</strong>. If I can ease the financial<br />

weight for incoming <strong>Loughlin</strong><br />

students and their families it will<br />

fundamentally change lives.”
