Israel celebrations & shlichim Upcoming Programs Israel Cinema Nights Israel programs & resource center celebrations & shlichim •Community Shaliach: Samuel “Smulik” Kemper, 305-932-4200 ext. 128 •Chair: Mindy Hardoon The Israel Programs and Resource Center, made possible through a partnership of the MAR-JCC, Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and Jewish Agency for Israel, strengthens the ties that connect Miami-Dade County Jewry with the People and Culture of Israel. Under the full-time direction of a Community Shaliach (Cultural Emissary from the State of Israel), the program menu will include guest speakers and discussions; cultural arts related programs including performances, exhibitions, and film; Jewish holiday celebrations and observances; development of travel programs to Israel; and creating People to People opportunities with our community’s Parnership City of Yerucham. Contemporary Israeli film is brought to the big screen on a bi-monthly basis. Catch a glimpse into Israeli society and culture through some of Israel’s highly acclaimed films. Films, which are English subtitled, are screened at the Frank Theaters Intracoastal. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance through the offices of the Israel Programs Department or at the door, beginning at 7:15 pm. Presented in conjunction with the Israeli House of the Consulate General of Israel Next Film: The Ballad of the Weeping Spring, Thursday, January 10, at 8 pm Meet Amram, the son of Avraham Mufredi, who turns up at the house of the legendary Persian tar (lute) player, Yosef Tawilla. Amram gives him the score of a work that his father, a member of Tawill’s ensemble and his partner, wants to see performed before his impending death. Tawilla and Amram set out on a journey of discovery joined by groups of wonderful musicians. Amram will find love and Tawilla, if he succeeds; will fulfill Avraham Mufredi’s dying wish, maybe to bring succor to his tormented soul. Israel Update: “Israel’s Political Map” Monday, January 14 • 10-11:30am • Free for all With the approach of Israel’s National Elections, get an overview of Israel’s political landscape, who the candidates are, alignment of its political parties, and the impact that it may have on the country’s relationships with its neighbors, the United States, and Europe. Israel programs & resource center celebrations & shlichim Yom Ha’atzma’ut – Israel Independence Day • Monday & Tuesday, April 15 & 16 •Israel 65 Community Celebration - Monday, April 15 Israel’s 65th birthday will be celebrated in a festive manner beginning late Monday afternoon and running into the evening. From transitioning from Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) to a torch lighting ceremony honoring community members whose have significantly strengthened our relationship to the State of Israel, from entertainment to interactive activity stations, from educational programs to an Israeli-style glatt kosher food court, the community is invited to attend this FREE program, that is organized and supported by area synagogues, day schools, and Jewish organizations serving Miami-Dade and South Florida Jewry. •Festival Shirim - Tuesday, April 16 Jewish day school students will come together at the MAR-JCC offering performances in honor of Israel’s Independence Day and participating at activity stations where they will enjoy hands-on experiences that tie into the day’s theme. Lag B’Omer Saturday, April 27, 8:30pm The 33rd day of the Omer (which is a period of a total of 49 days from the second night of Passover and ending with Shavuot) is traditionally celebrated with outdoor activity and bonfires. Families are invited to join with the MAR-JCC Maccabi Tzair program to celebrate the holiday with a medura and fun-filled activities. Israel Travel Furthering the relationship between the MAR-JCC and the State of Israel is achieved through customized travel programs to Israel. The Community Shaliach is intimately involved in developing these opportunities with MAR-JCC department directors including: this winter’s Special Needs Israel trip, (February 17 - 28) this spring’s The Flavors of Israel: Food and Wine Experience (April 28 – May 5) and this summer’s School of Madrichim Leadership Program (July 2-28). People to People Connections •Shinshinim Our connection to Yerucham is re-enforced through the presence of shinshinim, post high school young adults from Yerucham, who bring the flavor of Israel and Zionist spirit of Yerucham to the classrooms of Jewish day schools and Hebrew schools, to Jewish organizations and youth groups, and through assisting the Community Shaliach in the development of community programs and activities. Schools, organizations, and youth groups interested in incorporating the shinshinim into their programming may contact Shmulik Kemper. •Summer Shlichim The MAR-JCC summer camp, Camp Sol Taplin, is enriched with the addition of counselor/specialty staff from Israel, who have been specially trained to work in North American summer camp settings. These post-army young adults bring to the camp a knowledge of working with children and an enthusiasm to bring to North Miami Dade County a greater awareness of their country and its accomplishments.
