Enriching Lives: One Camper at a Time
Gabe did not speak until the age of 5. He did not participate in activities
with other children. There was no interaction with others outside
his immediate family and even then, it was minimal. You see, Gabe is
on the autism spectrum.

It's Never Too Late to Discover Your Inner Artist
Rose Schmuckler's talent is astounding
for someone who has only been painting
for 14 years. Her colors are vibrant, and
her artwork skillfully created. But what
is truly incredible is that Rose was 80
years old the first time she held a paintbrush.“I
picked up a kit of $10 brushes,
and gave it a try,” says Schmuckler.
Now 94 years young, Rose can be found
on Monday mornings painting with art
instructor Christine Lyons Rendell in the
JCC’s Saltzman Foundation Life Long
Learning Institutes (LLL) art class.
Inspired by the paintings of John
Singer Sargeant and Van Gogh, Rose
says that the class has helped her to
continue to grow as an artist and perfect
her technique. But according to Rose,
that is not the only reason she shows up
for class each week.

well as other important life skills.
“Gabe goes to camp just like every other kid. He gets to run and
jump. He has the opportunity to play games and be a part of a team.
Other children cheer for him and he gets to cheer for others. Most
of you may not think this is a big deal, but to our family, it is a miracle,”
says Jennifer.
When Gabe began camp at age 7 this was the first time he was in an
“inclusion” environment. He was with typical children that didn’t
know him – children that weren’t in his daily routine at this time.
Jennifer recalls, “I remember when Gabe was accepted into the
program, I was so nervous. I wasn’t sure if this was the right thing
for him. I worried about how he would function in this type of
environment without me or my husband around him. My worries
were for nothing.”
Now 5 years later, Gabe continues to thrive and flourish at the JCC
Camps in Medford with the help of a warm and loving OH/OD staff
that includes his own one-on-one advocate. His favorite activities at
camp include basketball, gaga, fishing, and free swim.

“I come into class full of problems and
tensions and once I begin painting I
relax completely. I just become part of
a different world,” relates Schmuckler.
“Everyone in class becomes family.”
In addition to her art class, Rose keeps
a full schedule at the JCC each week.
“Everyday I have a different activity
that keeps me busy --Monday is art
class, Tuesday is Yiddish Group,
Wednesday is Life Long Learning's
Current Events, Thursday is LLL
Opera and Friday is LLL Bible. I also
eat lunch in the senior meal program
and am a writer for the Scene Magazine
(the adult department newsletter).”

with dynamic music and instructors giving constant encouragement and feedback
throughout the session. The classes are always easy to follow too, with no complicated choreographed
moves, so there is no danger of feeling lost or self-conscious.”

brings her enthusiasm,
expertise and exuberance
to the Sari Isdaner
Early Childhood Center
at the Katz JCC.
Gail served as a
Director of Federation
Day Care Services in
Philadelphia for 25
years and the Director
of Beth Sholom
Goldman Preschool in
Gail Cohen reads to students.
Elkins Park, PA for
five years. While at
Federation Day Care Services and Beth Sholom Goldman Preschool,
Gail introduced and helped implement the infant toddler programs
that are still being utilized today. Most recently Gail was the Director
of the Kindercare Learning Center in Yardley, PA.
A true advocate for early childhood learning, Gail shared that it is her
responsibility as a director to provide the best environment for children
to learn and grow. “My goal is to always have a safe and happy child
who enjoys coming to school” she explains.
A native of Northeast Philadelphia, Gail earned her Masters in
Education from Beaver University, known today as Arcadia University.
Gail currently resides with her husband Mark, three children Felicia,
23, Brandon, 20 and Rachael, 14 and her two dogs and two cats.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gail as our Early Childhood Director,”says Ruth
Gluck, JCC Associate Director. “She will bring a new vitality to our school.”
JCC Camps At Medford Has Lost A Great Friend
JCC Camps at Medford has lost an amazing man
and a great friend. Buster Hayes was one of camp's
greatest ambassadors. If you or your child attended
the JCC Camps at Medford during the last two
decades, you surely remember his vibrant smile and
always cheerful manner. Buster worked at camp for
25 seasons as Maintenance /Site Director getting to
know generations of campers, many of whom are
now camp parents themselves.
Always a friendly presence, Buster was front and
center at every camp open house, warmly greeting
each prospective family and telling them he hoped
to see them that summer. For 25 summers, every
camper, staff and visitor received a warm “Buster
Welcome” each morning and a Shabbat Shalom
every Friday. He always made time to wave and
smile to any camper calling out, “Buster, Buster...”
He was such a formidable presence, that
generations of campers thought Buster
owned the camp.
According to Aaron Greenberg, JCC Camps at
Medford Director, “Those who were lucky to
know him year round, received a Yom Tov
(Good Holiday) greeting for every Jewish holiday,
major or minor. Buster was also proud that
he was born the same year as the State of Israel.
Did I mention that Buster wasn’t Jewish?”
Buster was one of the kindest, gentlest men
ever and we can never describe what we have
lost. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his
wife Sue, and his children Joe, Tina and
Jeffrey. Donations made to the JCC Camps at
Medford will be used for a special project in
Buster’s memory.

Lisa and Ed Eichen joined the JCC in June 1997. They have 3 sons
Adam, 16, Ian, 14 and Bryan, 8.
WE JOINED THE KATZ JCC:
to participate in Jewish educational and sports programs for our
family. The 3 boys have attended the Sari Isdaner Early Childhood
Center, played Jr. Maccabi, and attend JCC Camps at Medford.
OUR MEMBERSHIP HAS A VALUE TO US BECAUSE:
we are able to participate and volunteer in activities important to us with a Jewish theme. Our sons
have played soccer since age 5. The Maccabi experience brings them closer to the world of sports with
a Jewish perspective. There is a feeling of comfort when you walk in the building, to be in a place that
promotes Jewish values. There is so much the center has to offer to families at every stage in their lives.

Volunteering. Ed has been a soccer coach for 3 years, serving 2 years as a JCC Maccabi Games coach
and 1 year as a Mid-Atlantic Jr. Maccabi coach. Ian, for his Bar Mitzvah project volunteered tutoring
young children after-school at the JCC’s Homework, Helps and Hugs program. Lisa served for several
years on the JCC Craft and Fine Arts Committee.
EVERY YEAR WE LOOK FORWARD TO:
JCC Camps at Medford. Collectively, the three boys have spent 30 years as campers/staff at the JCC
Camps at Medford. Adam (13 years) is now a counselor, Ian, (11 years) a CIT and Brian (6 years) a
camper in Shalom. “The boys love Medford so much they have never wanted to go to overnight camp.”
WITHOUT THE JCC OUR FAMILY WOULD:
be missing some of the social aspects the center has given us. The JCC rounds out the Jewish
upbringing of our children. We do belong to a synagogue but the JCC imparts Judaism
through sports, camaraderie and socializing.

Teens Strengthen Jewish Identity at JCC Maccabi Programs
Fifteen year old Cari Winiarski will be
one of 65 talented Jewish athletes
representing South Jersey from
the Katz JCC to participate in
the JCC Maccabi Games taking
place in San Antonio Texas and
Mid-Westchester, NY. The JCC
Maccabi Games is an Olympicstyle
event held in multiple
communities each summer for
Jewish teens ages 13-16 to compete
in a variety of sports including bowling,
boys’ soccer, boys’ & girls’ basketball,
tennis, baseball & swimming. But more than an arena for sports
competition, the Maccabi Games offer Jewish teens an opportunity
to enrich their Jewish identity in an informal setting. “In addition
to athletics, the teens participate in Tikkun Olam volunteer
projects, Opening Ceremonies that include a tribute to the Munich
Olympics, and bond with Jewish teens from across the US and
Israel,” according to Andy Kaufman, Maccabi Games Chair.
“It is amazing to see the Jewish pride the
kids have as they march out as one of 45
delegations at Opening Ceremonies. To
see 1600 Jewish teens in one venue is
incredibly moving,” said Kaufman.
For Winiarski, who will be entering her sophomore
year at Eastern Regional High School
this fall, this is her first experience with the
Maccabi Games. Winiarski brings not only enthusiasm and team spirit
to the basketball court, but also seven years of basketball experience.
Winiarski feels incredibly grateful for the chance to compete in the
upcoming Maccabi Games. “As soon as I was given the opportunity
to participate I knew I wanted to. Hearing about the Games from
other kids and how much fun it is, made me want to do it more”,
said Winiarski.
A JCC member for the past four years, Winiarski is active at the J.
She is a counselor at the JCC Camps at Medford, volunteers for
KIDSLAND and spends time in the fitness center, swimming pool
and of course on the basketball courts.

This opportunity to attend a camp alongside typical campers, has
changed him into a different child, explains Jennifer. “Gabe is now
more outgoing and willing to participate in group events. In fact,
earlier this month we took him to a new place with other children he
did not know, and he had no apprehension at all. This never would
have happened without the camp experience.”
According to Cathy Samuel, OH/OD Director, the benefits are
immeasurable to campers . The typical children benefit as much as
the children with special needs. The program creates positive
awareness and acceptance of all people no matter what their perceived
differences may be. Isn’t that what we all want to teach our children?

Through the relationships formed with peers and staff, Winiarski will
join the ranks of many former Maccabi athletes who have become
mentors and role models in the JCC’s youth sports programs. After
returning from the games, she will serve as a teacher and official for
younger budding athletes, in the Jr. Maccabi basketball league.
Andrew Garonzik, 16 will
compete in his second
Maccabi ArtsFest in Orange
County, CA along with 9
other aspiring artists from
the Katz JCC. Maccabi
ArtsFest is a forum for Jewish
teens in 8th-12th grade to
showcase their creative and
artistic talents through workshops,
exhibits and performances. Teen artists spend the majority
of each day in master classes with a professional artist-in-residence,
preparing for the closing event.
ArtsFest was created to give teens that are not athletically inclined,
the opportunity to gain the same meaningful Jewish experience as
the Macabbi Games. In the evenings, the teens relax with their host
family, enjoy fun social events at the local JCC and volunteer in a
Day of Caring and Sharing service project in the host community.
Garonzik will showcase his trumpet skills while performing in the
specialty of Jazz Ensemble. A self-motivated musician, Garonzik
had previously played the clarinet, but after listening to Chicago, he
switched over to the trumpet. It was only after six months of playing
the trumpet that Garonzik performed in ArtsFest for the first time
in 2007.“The support I got last time while having so little experience,
really made me want to perform again,” said Garonzik.
No stranger to the JCC, Andrew has been a member with his family
since he was a small child. Currently Garonzik works as a lifeguard,
volunteers at different JCC events and works out with his friends.
When asked if he would recommend ArtsFest to friends, Garaonzik
said absolutely. “Maccabi ArtsFest is a great place to meet new
Jewish people from around the country and world and perform in
front of an audience. Anyone who can perform or create any kind of
art should be at ArtsFest.”
• Over 1100 children have participated in OH/OD Program
since its inception in 1993, when 12 children with special
needs were accepted into the pilot program
• This summer 101 children participated in the OH/OD
program
• The JCC Camps at Medford has presented its “Best
Inclusion Practices at Camp” at numerous American Camp
Association (ACA) conferences
• The OH/OD Program has been recognized for its excellence
by the New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education,
Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey and Families Fighting Autism

Norma and Norman Oken enjoyed the recent Adult Department
Hawaiian Luau during the weekly Thursday Night Dinner, part of the
weekly meal program at the Katz JCC. The night included, live entertainment,
a full course dinner, dancing, laughter and more
Gesture of Generosity
Due to the generosity of Ethyl Blumenfeld, campers at the JCC
Camps at Medford are enjoying a new state of the art fishing
dock. Blumenfeld donated the dock, named Charlie B’s fishing
dock, in memory of her late husband Charles who had a passion
for both camp and fishing.

Golfing For A Good Cause
JCC Members Steve Schwartz and Jeff Herskowitz, chaired the
38th Annual Woodcrest Invitational Pro-Am to benefit the JCC
Camps at Medford Scholarship Fund and the Open Hearts/Open
Doors inclusion program for children with special needs.
The event, held at the Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill,
pairs up golf professionals with amateurs for a day of fun and
fundraising. A special feature of this year’s event was a golf clinic
with pro Sean O’Hair.
In addition to a day on the links, golfers enjoy hole in one tournaments,
brunch, cocktails, dinner and an awards ceremony. Community
philanthropist Steve Shapiro received this year’s Daniel B. Toll
Humanitarian Award. This event was made possible due to the
generous contribution of Hill International, keynote sponsor.

are 82, widowed and living alone
• The Katz JCC is the largest and only kosher Congregate
Meal site in Camden County
• Statistically, older adults living alone, regardless of
income, are malnourished because it is difficult to be
motivated to cook for one

thanks to the funds raised by the Woodcrest Invitational Pro-Am.
Each year, the scholarships help children from disadvantaged or disrupted home lives have a summer experience in a safe and loving
environment. Through the Open Hearts/Open Doors program, children with developmental and/or physical disabilities experience
