THE MISSION OF JESUS §12.6<br />

membered preach<strong>in</strong>g of God's k<strong>in</strong>gdom has to do <strong>in</strong> greater or less degree with<br />

what had previously been hopes and expectations for <strong>the</strong> future. 388<br />

Some of <strong>the</strong>se hopes he claimed were already be<strong>in</strong>g fulfilled. Th<strong>in</strong>gs were<br />

happen<strong>in</strong>g that earlier generations had longed to see. Someth<strong>in</strong>g new, of lifechang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

value, was already before his hearers. Sight was be<strong>in</strong>g restored to <strong>the</strong><br />

bl<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong> lame were walk<strong>in</strong>g, even <strong>the</strong> dead raised. Good news was be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

preached to <strong>the</strong> poor: <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom was <strong>the</strong>irs! The Baptist's message of imm<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

judgment had to be qualified <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light of what was already happen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through <strong>Jesus</strong>' m<strong>in</strong>istry. Satan's rule was already broken. There was an eschatological<br />

harvest already to be reaped. 389<br />

At o<strong>the</strong>r times <strong>Jesus</strong> spoke <strong>in</strong> still future terms. Of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God<br />

press<strong>in</strong>gly close: it had drawn near (<strong>in</strong> his own m<strong>in</strong>istry); it posed a crisis which<br />

had to be responded to at once. Of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God as a sort of Utopian ideal<br />

for <strong>the</strong> future on <strong>the</strong> earth: <strong>the</strong> last first, <strong>the</strong> humble exalted, <strong>the</strong> despised already<br />

able to press <strong>in</strong>to it; some at least of <strong>the</strong> promised reward could be given <strong>in</strong> a fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

phase of history. Of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God as a post-mortem state: to be 'entered<br />

<strong>in</strong>to' after suffer<strong>in</strong>g and self-sacrifice. Of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God as a f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

condition: follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> unprecedented suffer<strong>in</strong>g anticipated <strong>in</strong> apocalyptic<br />

thought (and by <strong>the</strong> Baptist), follow<strong>in</strong>g a f<strong>in</strong>al judgment <strong>in</strong><strong>vol</strong>v<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r generations<br />

and nations, an angel-like existence.<br />

Here <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> quester is faced with a major problem. Both present<br />

and future strands of <strong>Jesus</strong>' preach<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God seem to be firmly<br />

rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition and well established <strong>in</strong> all streams of <strong>the</strong> tradition. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> light of this evidence we have little choice o<strong>the</strong>r than to conclude that <strong>Jesus</strong>'<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g was remembered as be<strong>in</strong>g characterized by both emphases. Attempts to<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>ate one or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r or to give one a weight which overwhelms <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

have not generally been counted successful. 390 Individual items with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vari-<br />

388. '<strong>Jesus</strong> is not a "marg<strong>in</strong>al Jew" <strong>in</strong> his eschatological preach<strong>in</strong>g' (Theissen and Merz,<br />

Historical <strong>Jesus</strong> 276).<br />

389. Riches argues, with reference to such data, that <strong>Jesus</strong> 'transformed' <strong>the</strong> traditional<br />

associations of <strong>the</strong> term 'k<strong>in</strong>gdom' (<strong>Jesus</strong> ch. 5, particularly 103-104), but neglects <strong>the</strong> wider<br />

associations listed <strong>in</strong> § 12.2c above, which suggest that 'transformation' is not <strong>the</strong> most appropriate<br />

term to use.<br />

390. For example, Weiss's future emphasis is one-sidedly pressed by Hiers, Historical<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong>; Sanders is clear that <strong>in</strong> any choice between 'present' and 'future' <strong>the</strong> emphasis has to be<br />

put on <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom as 'immediately future' (<strong>Jesus</strong> and Judaism 152); Allison, <strong>Jesus</strong> of Nazareth,<br />

and Ehrman, <strong>Jesus</strong>, press <strong>the</strong> case more strongly. Caragounis f<strong>in</strong>ds no 's<strong>in</strong>gle k<strong>in</strong>gdom of<br />

God say<strong>in</strong>g which unequivocally demands to be taken <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present sense' ('K<strong>in</strong>gdom of God'<br />

424). On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side, Dodd argued that '<strong>Jesus</strong> <strong>in</strong>tended to proclaim <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gdom of God not<br />

as someth<strong>in</strong>g to come <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near future, but as a matter of present experience' (Parables 46); <strong>in</strong><br />

turn Käsemann argued that <strong>the</strong> irreconcilable contradiction between <strong>the</strong> two emphases could be<br />

expla<strong>in</strong>ed only by postulat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> 'already present' emphasis was au<strong>the</strong>ntic, and <strong>the</strong> 'still to<br />
