and argued <strong>in</strong>stead that <strong>the</strong> parables look back from <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> process of<br />

growth, from <strong>the</strong> time of harvest. 382 In view of Matt. 9.37-38/Luke W.llGTh 73<br />

<strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t cannot be ignored: 383 <strong>Jesus</strong> was recalled describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> harvest as here<br />

already, ready to be reaped; God's rule had already come to its expected fruition.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, both Mat<strong>the</strong>w and Luke, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mission <strong>in</strong>structions which<br />

follow, <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> commission to preach, 'The k<strong>in</strong>gdom of heaven/God has<br />

drawn near' (Matt. 10.7/Luke 10.9). So <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t should not be pressed. 384 We<br />

should ra<strong>the</strong>r hesitate before sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se parables firmly <strong>in</strong>to one or o<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong><br />

alternative time-frames reviewed above. 385 They belong to <strong>the</strong> scatter of images<br />

on which <strong>Jesus</strong> probably drew <strong>in</strong> his preach<strong>in</strong>g of God's k<strong>in</strong>gdom, and he may<br />

have been a good deal less concerned about questions of tim<strong>in</strong>g than are modern<br />

questers. The parables of growth are worth not<strong>in</strong>g at this po<strong>in</strong>t precisely because<br />

<strong>the</strong>y express <strong>the</strong> tension and diversity with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition's talk of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom's<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g. 386<br />

In sum, it should now be clear that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition conta<strong>in</strong>s a second<br />

strong strand <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom motif which emphasizes that <strong>in</strong> some sense <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom has come, is already present. As with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r (future) strand, <strong>the</strong> term<br />

'k<strong>in</strong>gdom' itself does not always feature. And aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are plenty of <strong>in</strong>dications<br />

of <strong>the</strong> tradition be<strong>in</strong>g retold <strong>in</strong> a variety of performance variants. But <strong>the</strong><br />

strand is held toge<strong>the</strong>r by a common sense of fulfilment, of a new th<strong>in</strong>g happen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of supreme importance, of <strong>the</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>gs expected for <strong>the</strong> age to come already<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g experienced, of a complete change of tone from <strong>the</strong> Baptist's message, of<br />

arrival of <strong>the</strong> harvest which noth<strong>in</strong>g can <strong>in</strong>fluence, that is <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of <strong>the</strong> parable [Mark 4.26-<br />

29]' {Promise 128). The harvest would come 'only through <strong>the</strong> miracle worked by God:<br />

automate he ge karpophorei' (Hengel, Charismatic Leader 60), '<strong>in</strong>dependent of every human<br />

act' (Bultmann, Theology 1.8), 'unfathomably, miraculously, without visible cause' (Schräge,<br />

Ethics 21).<br />

to have confidence <strong>in</strong> God's future' (Rediscover<strong>in</strong>g 158-59). Oakman (<strong>Jesus</strong> 123-28) and<br />

Crossan (Historical <strong>Jesus</strong> 276-81) focus more on <strong>the</strong> ironic (or shock<strong>in</strong>g) humour of us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

weeds (and leaven) to image <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />
