§12.5 The K<strong>in</strong>gdom of God<br />

which renders speculation as to its future irrelevant. This note, <strong>the</strong>n, is clearly registered<br />

<strong>in</strong> all strands which go to make up <strong>the</strong> Synoptic (and Thomas) tradition, and<br />

all three Evangelists regarded it as particularly characteristic of <strong>Jesus</strong>' mission. It<br />

can hardly have been o<strong>the</strong>rwise with <strong>the</strong> tradition on which <strong>the</strong>y drew.<br />

c. The Difference between <strong>the</strong> Baptist and <strong>Jesus</strong><br />

The 'already here' motif is nowhere more obvious than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> difference marked<br />

out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tradition between John <strong>the</strong> Baptist and <strong>Jesus</strong>. John had predicted a<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g judgment (§11.4). That note chimes <strong>in</strong> with some at least of <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

attributed to <strong>Jesus</strong> (§12.4). But John had noth<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 'already come' emphasis,<br />

whereas <strong>the</strong> Synoptic tradition regarded that too as central to <strong>Jesus</strong>' preach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Here we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> chief difference between <strong>the</strong> preach<strong>in</strong>g of John and that of <strong>Jesus</strong>.<br />

We have already h<strong>in</strong>ted at it above (§ 12.5a), but <strong>the</strong> contrast is most obvious<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> material which was ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> subject by Q and expanded by<br />

both Mat<strong>the</strong>w and Luke — ano<strong>the</strong>r example of <strong>the</strong> tendency with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> oral tradition<br />

to br<strong>in</strong>g material on <strong>the</strong> same subject toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> sequences. 303<br />

'Go and tell John what YOU hear and see:<br />

5 <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d receive <strong>the</strong>ir sight, and <strong>the</strong> lame<br />

walk, <strong>the</strong> lepers are cleansed, and <strong>the</strong> deaf hear.<br />

and <strong>the</strong> dead are raised, and <strong>the</strong> poor have good<br />

news brought to <strong>the</strong>m. 6 And blessed is anvone<br />

GTh<br />

18 The disciples of John reported all <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

to him. So John summoned two of his disciples<br />

19 and sent <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> Lord to ask, 'Are vou <strong>the</strong><br />

one who is to come, or are we to wait for<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r?' ... 22 And he answered <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

'Go and tell John what vou have seen and heard:<br />

<strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d receive <strong>the</strong>ir sight. <strong>the</strong> lame<br />

walk, <strong>the</strong> lepers are cleansed, and <strong>the</strong> deaf hear.<br />

303. See above, §8.6b. For <strong>the</strong> GTh parallels see above, § 11.2c. Q evidently had 7.24-28<br />

as a s<strong>in</strong>gle unit; <strong>the</strong> separation of two of its elements <strong>in</strong> Thomas can be expla<strong>in</strong>ed as <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r that <strong>the</strong> two say<strong>in</strong>gs circulated separately, or that Thomas's formation is <strong>the</strong> result of its<br />

abandon<strong>in</strong>g/reject<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Baptist tradition (see aga<strong>in</strong> § 11.2c above).<br />
