§12.5 The K<strong>in</strong>gdom of God<br />

legend (1 Kgs. 10.1-10), but <strong>in</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong>' m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>the</strong>re was someth<strong>in</strong>g greater! Jonah<br />

was famous for <strong>the</strong> success of his preach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> N<strong>in</strong>eveh (Jonah 3.5), but <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Jesus</strong>' m<strong>in</strong>istry someth<strong>in</strong>g greater was happen<strong>in</strong>g! The implication is that <strong>the</strong><br />

Galileans' failure to follow <strong>the</strong> lead given by <strong>the</strong> queen and <strong>the</strong> N<strong>in</strong>evites made<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> more culpable. We today may recoil at such a high self-esteem attributed<br />

to <strong>Jesus</strong>' mission. But it would be unwise to discount <strong>the</strong> tradition's testimony<br />

to <strong>Jesus</strong>' own remembered evaluation of his mission on that account alone.<br />

The similar note of a markedly changed situation, of someth<strong>in</strong>g new, which<br />

decisively relativizes previous or normal practice is also struck <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r small<br />

collection of parabolic say<strong>in</strong>gs preserved <strong>in</strong> Mark 2.18-22 pars.<br />

Matt. 9.14-15<br />

14 Then <strong>the</strong> disciples of John<br />

came to him, say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

'Why do we<br />

and <strong>the</strong><br />

Pharisees fast (often), but vour<br />

disciples do not fast?' 15 And<br />

he said to <strong>the</strong>m, 'The wedd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

guests cannot mourn as lone as<br />

<strong>the</strong> bridegroom is with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The days<br />

will come when <strong>the</strong> bridegroom<br />

is taken away from <strong>the</strong>m, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y will fast'.<br />

Matt. 9.16-17<br />

16 No one puts a piece of<br />

unshrunk cloth on an old cloak.<br />

for <strong>the</strong> patch Dulls awav<br />

from <strong>the</strong> cloak,<br />

and a worse tear is made. 17<br />

Nei<strong>the</strong>r do <strong>the</strong>v out new w<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong>to old w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s; o<strong>the</strong>rwise.<br />

<strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s burst,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e is spilled, and <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s are destroyed;<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y put new w<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong>to new w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s, and so<br />

both are preserved.<br />

Mark 2.18-20<br />

18 Now <strong>the</strong> disciples of John<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Pharisees were fast<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

and people came and said to<br />

him, "Why do <strong>the</strong> disciples of<br />

John and <strong>the</strong> disciples of <strong>the</strong><br />

Pharisees fast. but vour<br />

disciples do not fast?' 19 And<br />

he said to <strong>the</strong>m, 'The wedd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

guests cannot fast while<br />

<strong>the</strong> bridegroom is with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

can <strong>the</strong>y? As long as <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

<strong>the</strong> bridegroom with <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

cannot fast. 20 The days<br />

will come when <strong>the</strong> bridegroom<br />

is taken awav from <strong>the</strong>m, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>v will fast on that day'.<br />

Mark 2.21-22<br />

21 No one sews a piece of<br />

unshrunk cloth on an old cloak;<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise, <strong>the</strong> patch pulls away<br />

from it. <strong>the</strong> new from <strong>the</strong> old,<br />

and a worse tear is made. 22<br />

And no one puts new w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to<br />

old w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s; o<strong>the</strong>rwise, <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>e will burst <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s, and <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e is<br />

destroyed, and so are <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s; but new w<strong>in</strong>e is<br />

for new w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

Luke 5.33-35<br />

33 Then <strong>the</strong>y said to<br />

him, 'The disciples of<br />

John frequently fast and pray,<br />

like those of <strong>the</strong> Pharisees, but<br />

yours eat and dr<strong>in</strong>k'. 34<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong> said to <strong>the</strong>m, 'You cannot<br />

make wedd<strong>in</strong>g guests fast while<br />

<strong>the</strong> bridegroom is with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

can you?<br />

35 The days<br />

will come when <strong>the</strong> bridegroom<br />

is taken awav from <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>v will fast <strong>in</strong> those<br />

days'.<br />

Luke 5.36-38<br />

36 He also told <strong>the</strong>m a parable:<br />

'No one tears a piece from a<br />

new cloak and puts it on an old<br />

cloak; o<strong>the</strong>rwise <strong>the</strong> new will<br />

tear, and <strong>the</strong> piece from <strong>the</strong> new<br />

will not match <strong>the</strong> old. 37<br />

And no one puts new w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to<br />

old w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s; o<strong>the</strong>rwise <strong>the</strong><br />

new w<strong>in</strong>e will burst <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s and will be spilled,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s destroyed. 38<br />

But new w<strong>in</strong>e must be<br />

put <strong>in</strong>to new w<strong>in</strong>esk<strong>in</strong>s'.<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w and Luke appear to be dependent on Mark for <strong>the</strong>ir tradition,<br />

though we note <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of all three characteristic features of oral retell<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

That is to say, several of <strong>the</strong> pecularities of each make better sense as free<br />

retell<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> tradition which reta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> more or less <strong>the</strong> same<br />
