U2.3 The K<strong>in</strong>gdom of God<br />

texts, subject<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>in</strong>tensive analysis, draw<strong>in</strong>g out immediate conclusions<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir likely impact, and <strong>the</strong>n pull<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r texts <strong>in</strong> support — is not<br />

<strong>the</strong> most obvious way to proceed. Questions about <strong>the</strong> larger picture, about <strong>the</strong><br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gfulness of describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividual passages as 'eschatological' (or 'apocalyptic')<br />

or about <strong>the</strong> symbolical or metaphorical force of any particular usage are<br />

unlikely to f<strong>in</strong>d a satisfactory answer by a process of atomistic exegesis.<br />

Instead, <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with <strong>the</strong> methodological decision that we must look first for<br />

<strong>the</strong> broad picture (§10.2), it makes better sense to attempt to ga<strong>in</strong> a broad overview<br />

of <strong>the</strong> full range of <strong>Jesus</strong>' k<strong>in</strong>gdom teach<strong>in</strong>g and its most closely related<br />

<strong>the</strong>mes. In that way we can beg<strong>in</strong> to appreciate <strong>the</strong> motifs and emphases which<br />

most characterized <strong>Jesus</strong>' k<strong>in</strong>gdom preach<strong>in</strong>g. And <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light of <strong>the</strong> full sweep<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom we will be <strong>in</strong> a better position to<br />

tackle <strong>the</strong> three key questions and to ask <strong>in</strong> a more <strong>in</strong>formed and mean<strong>in</strong>gful way<br />

what impact <strong>Jesus</strong> made at this po<strong>in</strong>t, what his preach<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom evoked<br />

<strong>in</strong> his hearers' m<strong>in</strong>ds. From what has been remembered and <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong> which it<br />

has been remembered we will be <strong>in</strong> a better position to clarify (to <strong>the</strong> extent that<br />

that is possible) what response <strong>Jesus</strong> <strong>in</strong>tended to evoke by his use of <strong>the</strong> phrase<br />

'<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God'.<br />

How best to order <strong>the</strong> material <strong>in</strong> such an overview? Various schemata have<br />

been offered at one time or ano<strong>the</strong>r — <strong>the</strong>ological and salvation-historical,<br />

ecclesiological and ethical, social and political. But <strong>the</strong> debate on <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

which exploded at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> twentieth century and reemerged <strong>in</strong> its last<br />

two decades with equal ferocity, has been triggered by one central feature — <strong>the</strong><br />

future/present tension with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition. That is to say, <strong>the</strong> tradition represents<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong> as speak<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom as yet to come but also already present. I<br />

put <strong>the</strong> matter baldly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first <strong>in</strong>stance, though it is capable of almost <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite ref<strong>in</strong>ement,<br />

as we shall see. But <strong>the</strong>re has never been any dispute among questers of<br />

<strong>the</strong> historical <strong>Jesus</strong> as to <strong>the</strong>se bald facts (<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom both future and present <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition), not at least s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> focus turned to <strong>the</strong> say<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>Jesus</strong> and<br />

John's Gospel was sidel<strong>in</strong>ed. Many f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g debate ra<strong>the</strong>r sterile, but<br />

talk of God's k<strong>in</strong>gdom is too central to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition, so that we can hardly<br />

ignore ei<strong>the</strong>r it or <strong>the</strong> debate about it. And s<strong>in</strong>ce this twofold feature, this yet to<br />

come but already present, runs through <strong>the</strong> great bulk of <strong>the</strong> tradition and not just<br />

<strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom passages, <strong>the</strong> future/present emphases cont<strong>in</strong>ue to provide a useful<br />

means of structur<strong>in</strong>g a review of <strong>the</strong> tradition. The immediate concern, of course,<br />

is to clarify how deeply rooted both 'tenses' (future/present) are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition.<br />

But bear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d our three key questions, however, it will be important repeatedly<br />

to ask, In what sense 'future' ? In what sense 'present' ? In what sense 'eschatological'?<br />

In what sense 'symbol' or 'metaphor' or o<strong>the</strong>rwise? And f<strong>in</strong>ally to<br />

ask whe<strong>the</strong>r some grand narrative emerges at <strong>the</strong> end of our analysis, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

first memories of <strong>Jesus</strong>' preach<strong>in</strong>g build <strong>in</strong>to a coherent whole?<br />
