THE MISSION OF JESUS §12.2<br />

we speak of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God as a 'metaphor' 38 for <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g to power of<br />

God as '<strong>the</strong> unconditional will for <strong>the</strong> good' (Theissen and Merz)? 39 At all<br />

events, we should heed well <strong>the</strong> warn<strong>in</strong>g not to treat <strong>Jesus</strong>' k<strong>in</strong>gdom talk <strong>in</strong> isolation,<br />

far less <strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>in</strong>dividual say<strong>in</strong>gs evaluated on <strong>the</strong>ir own. Is <strong>the</strong>re not<br />

a larger story which his teach<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>in</strong>tended to evoke? If so, <strong>Jesus</strong>' k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g can be properly expounded only with<strong>in</strong> that context, at least <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong> context <strong>in</strong> view will be not merely <strong>the</strong> immediate<br />

context of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual occurrences of <strong>the</strong> term with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition or<br />

even <strong>the</strong> context provided by each Gospel as a whole. It will have to be <strong>the</strong> context<br />

of Israel's memory of its own monarchic past, of Jewish current experience<br />

under <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gship of o<strong>the</strong>rs, and of <strong>the</strong> hopes of <strong>the</strong> faithful regard<strong>in</strong>g God's<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gship for <strong>the</strong> future. Here aga<strong>in</strong> we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves caught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terplay between history and hermeneutics.<br />

Such hypo<strong>the</strong>ses as those just <strong>in</strong>dicated cannot be dealt with satisfactorily<br />

at <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical level. They stand or fall by <strong>the</strong>ir success <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g sense of <strong>the</strong><br />

data. The obvious procedure, <strong>the</strong>refore, is to set out <strong>the</strong> 'context of mean<strong>in</strong>g'<br />

more fully, that is, <strong>the</strong> context of usage and association which would have <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

<strong>the</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Jesus</strong>' audiences, or, if you like, <strong>the</strong> context of mean<strong>in</strong>g<br />

which <strong>Jesus</strong> could have been expected to assume for his audiences' understand<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

however he may have attempted to tweak or challenge it. In which case, <strong>the</strong><br />

first task is to clarify <strong>the</strong> more immediate context of mean<strong>in</strong>g for talk of God's<br />

malkut/basileia.<br />

b. God's Reign<br />

Although talk of God's 'k<strong>in</strong>gdom' is relatively scarce <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature of Second<br />

Temple Judaism, <strong>the</strong> content of <strong>the</strong> phrase would have been familiar. The data<br />

have been reviewed several times recently, so all that is necessary here is to highlight<br />

<strong>the</strong> chief po<strong>in</strong>ts of significance. 40<br />

38. Hengel and Schwemer th<strong>in</strong>k 'symbol' is 'zu unverb<strong>in</strong>dlich, variabel und beliebig<br />

austauschbar', and prefer to talk of 'gewisse unveräusserliche Metaphern' {Königsherrschaft<br />
