§8.5 The Tradition<br />

Matt. 18.15,21-22<br />

15 "If your bro<strong>the</strong>r s<strong>in</strong>s aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

you, go and po<strong>in</strong>t out <strong>the</strong> fault when you and he<br />

are alone. If he listens to you, you have rega<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

your bro<strong>the</strong>r".<br />

21 Then Peter came and said to him, "Lord, if<br />

my bro<strong>the</strong>r s<strong>in</strong>s aga<strong>in</strong>st me, how often should I<br />

forgive him? As many as seven times?" 22 <strong>Jesus</strong><br />

said to him, "I tell you, not seven times, but<br />

seventy-seven times".<br />

Luke 17.3-4<br />

3 Be on your guard! If your bro<strong>the</strong>r s<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

rebuke him,<br />

and if he repents, forgive him.<br />

4 And if<br />

someone s<strong>in</strong>s aga<strong>in</strong>st you seven times a day, and<br />

turns back to you seven times and says, "I<br />

repent", you must forgive him.<br />

Matt. 22.1-14 Luke 14.15-24<br />

1 Once more <strong>Jesus</strong> spoke to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> parables,<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g: 2 "The k<strong>in</strong>gdom of heaven may be<br />

compared to a k<strong>in</strong>g who gave a wedd<strong>in</strong>g banquet<br />

for his son. 3 He<br />

sent his slaves to call those who had been <strong>in</strong>vited<br />

to <strong>the</strong> wedd<strong>in</strong>g banquet,<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y would not come. 4 Aga<strong>in</strong> he sent o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

slaves, say<strong>in</strong>g, 'Tell those who have been <strong>in</strong>vited:<br />

Look, I have prepared my d<strong>in</strong>ner, my oxen and<br />

my fat calves have been slaughtered, and<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g is ready; come to <strong>the</strong> wedd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

banquet'. 5 But <strong>the</strong>y made light of it and went<br />

away, one to his farm.<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r to his<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

6 while <strong>the</strong> rest seized his slaves, mistreated<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, and killed <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

7 The k<strong>in</strong>g was angered. He sent his troops,<br />

destroyed those murderers, and burned <strong>the</strong>ir city.<br />

8 Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedd<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

ready, but those <strong>in</strong>vited were not worthy. 9 Go<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> streets, and <strong>in</strong>vite everyone you<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> wedd<strong>in</strong>g banquet'.<br />

10 Those slaves went out <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> streets and<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>red all whom <strong>the</strong>y found, both good and<br />

bad;<br />

so <strong>the</strong> wedd<strong>in</strong>g hall was filled with guests.<br />

11 But when <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g came <strong>in</strong> to see <strong>the</strong> guests,<br />

he noticed a man <strong>the</strong>re who was not wear<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

wedd<strong>in</strong>g robe, 12 and he said to him, 'Friend,<br />

how did you get <strong>in</strong> here without a wedd<strong>in</strong>g robe?'<br />

And he was speechless. 13 Then <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g said to<br />

<strong>the</strong> attendants, 'B<strong>in</strong>d him hand and foot, and<br />

throw him <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> outer darkness, where <strong>the</strong>re<br />

will be weep<strong>in</strong>g and gnash<strong>in</strong>g of teeth'. 14 For<br />

many are called, but few are chosen".<br />

15 One of <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner guests, on hear<strong>in</strong>g this, said<br />

to him, "Blessed is anyone who will eat bread <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of God!" 16 Then <strong>Jesus</strong> said to<br />

him, "A certa<strong>in</strong> person gave a great d<strong>in</strong>ner and<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited many. 17 At <strong>the</strong> time for <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner he<br />

sent his slave to say to those who had been<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited,'Come; for it is now ready'. 18 But <strong>the</strong>y<br />

all alike began to make excuses.<br />

The first said to him, 'I have<br />

bought a farm, and I must go out and see it;<br />

please accept my regrets'. 19 Ano<strong>the</strong>r said, 'I<br />

have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

try <strong>the</strong>m out; please accept my regrets'. 20<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r said, 'I have married a wife, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore I cannot come'. 21 So <strong>the</strong> slave<br />

returned and reported this to his master. Then <strong>the</strong><br />

owner of <strong>the</strong> house became angry<br />

and said to his slave.<br />

'Go<br />

out at once <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> roads and lanes of <strong>the</strong> town<br />

and br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> poor, <strong>the</strong> crippled, <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> lame'. 22 And <strong>the</strong> slave said, 'Sir, what you<br />

ordered has been done, and <strong>the</strong>re is still room'. 23<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> master said to <strong>the</strong> slave, 'Go out <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

roads and lanes, and compel <strong>the</strong>m to come <strong>in</strong>, so<br />

that my house may be full. 24 For 1 tell you,<br />

none of those who were <strong>in</strong>vited will taste my<br />

d<strong>in</strong>ner'".<br />
