§8.4 The Tradition<br />

i. The Still<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Storm<br />

Matt. 8.23-27<br />

23 And when he got <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

boat, his disciples followed him.<br />

24 A<br />

great storm arose on <strong>the</strong> sea, so<br />

great that <strong>the</strong> boat was be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

swamped by <strong>the</strong> waves;<br />

but he was asleep.<br />

25 And <strong>the</strong>y<br />

went and woke him up. say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

"Lord, save us!<br />

We are perish<strong>in</strong>g!" 26 And he<br />

said to <strong>the</strong>m, "Why are you<br />

afraid, you of little faith?" Then<br />

he got up and rebuked <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

and <strong>the</strong> sea;<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re was a dead calm.<br />

27 The men were amazed,<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

"What sort of man is this, that<br />

even <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ds and <strong>the</strong> sea obey<br />

Mm?"<br />

Mark 4.35-41<br />

35 On that day, when even<strong>in</strong>g<br />

had come, he said to <strong>the</strong>m, "Let<br />

us go across to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side".<br />

36 And leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> crowd<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong>y took him with <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> boat, just as he was. O<strong>the</strong>r<br />

boats were with him. 37 A<br />

great stormw<strong>in</strong>d arose, and <strong>the</strong><br />

waves beat <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> boat, so that<br />

<strong>the</strong> boat was already be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

filled. 38 But he was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

stern, sleep<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> cushion;<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y woke him up and said<br />

to him, "Teacher, do you not<br />

care that we are perish<strong>in</strong>g?"<br />

39 He<br />

got up and rebuked <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d,<br />

and said to <strong>the</strong> sea, "Be quiet!<br />

Silence!" Then <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d ceased,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re was a dead calm.<br />

40 He said to <strong>the</strong>m, "Why are<br />

you afraid? Have you still no<br />

faith?" 41 And <strong>the</strong>y were filled<br />

with great awe and said to one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

"Who <strong>the</strong>n is this, that<br />

even <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d and <strong>the</strong> sea obey<br />

him?"<br />

Luke 8.22-25<br />

22 One day he got<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a boat with his disciples,<br />

and he said to <strong>the</strong>m, "Let us go<br />

across to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong><br />

lake". So <strong>the</strong>y put out, 23 and<br />

while <strong>the</strong>y were sail<strong>in</strong>g he fell<br />

asleep. A stormw<strong>in</strong>d swept<br />

down on <strong>the</strong> lake, and <strong>the</strong> boat<br />

was fill<strong>in</strong>g up, and <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong><br />

danger. 24 They went to him<br />

and woke him up, say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

"Master, Master,<br />

we are perish<strong>in</strong>g!"<br />

And<br />

he got up and rebuked <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d<br />

and <strong>the</strong> rag<strong>in</strong>g waves;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y ceased,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re was a calm.<br />

25 He said to <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

"Where is your<br />

faith?"<br />

They were afraid and amazed,<br />

and said to one ano<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

"Who <strong>the</strong>n is this, that he<br />

commands even <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ds and<br />

<strong>the</strong> water, and <strong>the</strong>y obey him?"<br />

Here aga<strong>in</strong> we have <strong>the</strong> characteristic features of different retell<strong>in</strong>gs of a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

story about <strong>Jesus</strong>. The key po<strong>in</strong>ts rema<strong>in</strong> constant: <strong>Jesus</strong> with his disciples <strong>in</strong> a<br />

boat (on <strong>the</strong> lake); a great storm and <strong>Jesus</strong> asleep (differently described); <strong>the</strong> dis-<br />

ciples rouse <strong>Jesus</strong>, he rebukes <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d and sea and a calm results; <strong>Jesus</strong> ques-<br />

tions <strong>the</strong> disciples' lack of faith and <strong>the</strong>y express wonder. The key l<strong>in</strong>es are<br />

clearly: 'he got up and rebuked <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d(s), and <strong>the</strong>re was a calm'; 'who is this<br />

that even <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d(s) obey him?' 204 Round this core <strong>the</strong> story could be told and<br />

retold, <strong>the</strong> details varied <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> context of retell<strong>in</strong>g and with any<br />

particular angle <strong>the</strong> storyteller wished to br<strong>in</strong>g out. 205<br />

Once aga<strong>in</strong> it is quite possible to argue for a purely literary connection —<br />

204. It is widely recognized that <strong>the</strong> story is structured on <strong>the</strong> pattern of <strong>the</strong> story of Jonah,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> key l<strong>in</strong>es dist<strong>in</strong>ctive to br<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t, How much greater than Jonah is here;<br />

see, e.g., Davies and Allison, Mat<strong>the</strong>w 2.70.<br />

205. In particular Mat<strong>the</strong>w's retell<strong>in</strong>g emphasizes <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes of discipleship/follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(akolou<strong>the</strong><strong>in</strong> — 8.19, 22, 23) and of 'little faith' (oligopistos/ia), dist<strong>in</strong>ctive to Mat<strong>the</strong>w (8.26;<br />

cf. 6.30; 14.31; 16.8; 17.20). See also below § 13.2b.<br />
