of abbreviation of Mat<strong>the</strong>w. But Synoptic analysis <strong>in</strong>dicates that <strong>in</strong> much of <strong>the</strong><br />

common material Mark's episodes are actually longer than Mat<strong>the</strong>w's. 17 Such a<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g is more obviously to be expla<strong>in</strong>ed by Mat<strong>the</strong>w abbreviat<strong>in</strong>g Mark's prolixity<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to make room for all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r say<strong>in</strong>gs material which he had to<br />

hand, ra<strong>the</strong>r than by Mark expand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividual episodes while omitt<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong><br />

extra teach<strong>in</strong>g provided by Mat<strong>the</strong>w, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g, for <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>the</strong> Sermon on <strong>the</strong><br />

Mount (Mat<strong>the</strong>w 5-7) and <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom parables of Mat<strong>the</strong>w 13. Why would an<br />

Evangelist who stresses <strong>the</strong> role of <strong>Jesus</strong> as Teacher 18 omit so much of <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

set out <strong>in</strong> Mat<strong>the</strong>w's Gospel? 19 In addition, <strong>the</strong> more detailed differences between<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w and Mark, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great majority of cases, are best expla<strong>in</strong>ed as<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w's improvement on Mark's style or Mat<strong>the</strong>w's avoidance of dubious implications<br />

which could be drawn from Mark's language. 20 Here no more than <strong>in</strong><br />

historical study do we deal <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ties; but much <strong>the</strong> most probable explanation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> available evidence cont<strong>in</strong>ues to postulate Markan priority.<br />

Doubts persist as to whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> NT Mark as such was <strong>the</strong> source used by<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r two Synoptic Evangelists. Should we speak ra<strong>the</strong>r of an earlier Mark<br />

(Ur-Markus), or of different editions of Mark? 21 Most have been content to affirm<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Mat<strong>the</strong>an and Lukan source was as near to <strong>the</strong> canonical Mark as<br />

boy (Mark 9.14-29/Matt. 17.14-21/Luke 9.37-43; see below, §8.4c[iii]).<br />
