quickly prized because of its potential import and soon told and told<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> circles of first disciples as a basic component of <strong>the</strong>ir conviction that<br />

God had raised <strong>Jesus</strong> from <strong>the</strong> grave.<br />

18.3. Appearance Traditions<br />

The second sequence of traditions is much more extensive, but also much more<br />

diverse. Indeed, <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g quite like <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> tradition and an effective<br />

synoptic analysis is almost impossible. In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g table I set out <strong>the</strong><br />

data <strong>in</strong> as close to a putative chronological order as <strong>the</strong> data permit, without putt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

any weight on <strong>the</strong> chronological relationships at this stage.<br />

she did not know that it was <strong>Jesus</strong>. 15 <strong>Jesus</strong> said to her, 'Woman, why are<br />

you weep<strong>in</strong>g? Whom are you look<strong>in</strong>g for?' Suppos<strong>in</strong>g him to be <strong>the</strong><br />

gardener, she said to him, 'Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where<br />

you have laid him, and I will take him away'. 16 <strong>Jesus</strong> said to her, 'Mary!'<br />
