§4.8 The Flight from Dogma<br />

rem<strong>in</strong>der that <strong>the</strong> tension, or perhaps better, confrontation between faith and history<br />

is still strong and that <strong>the</strong> flight from dogma cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be a motivat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

force <strong>in</strong> attempts to reconstruct <strong>the</strong> historical <strong>Jesus</strong>.<br />

4.8. Conclusion<br />

To sum up, <strong>the</strong> flight from dogma has left us a number of markers for future consideration:<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance of <strong>the</strong> gap between <strong>Jesus</strong> and his followers, Paul <strong>in</strong><br />

particular (Reimarus, Harnack); <strong>the</strong> problem of miracle and <strong>the</strong> importance of<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention of <strong>the</strong> miracle narratives seriously (Strauss); <strong>the</strong> necessity to<br />

check tradition aga<strong>in</strong>st its orig<strong>in</strong>al sources and <strong>the</strong>refore to recover <strong>the</strong>se sources<br />

(Liberals and neo-Liberals); <strong>the</strong> importance of some experiential rapport between<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpreter and <strong>the</strong> text (Schleiermacher) and of tak<strong>in</strong>g seriously <strong>the</strong><br />

ethical outcome of beliefs (Liberals); <strong>the</strong> danger of moderniz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Jesus</strong> and of<br />

fail<strong>in</strong>g to recognize his o<strong>the</strong>rness, with particular reference to his eschatological<br />

preach<strong>in</strong>g (Schweitzer); <strong>the</strong> importance of recogniz<strong>in</strong>g that faith played an important<br />

part <strong>in</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tradition from its earliest stages (Kahler); <strong>the</strong> need to<br />

take account of <strong>the</strong> social context of <strong>Jesus</strong> and of <strong>the</strong> movement he <strong>in</strong>itiated<br />

(Theissen, Horsley); <strong>the</strong> necessity to extend our search for sources of <strong>Jesus</strong>'<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g beyond <strong>the</strong> boundaries of <strong>the</strong> canon (Koester, Crossan). O<strong>the</strong>r items<br />

could be added, but <strong>the</strong>se certa<strong>in</strong>ly provide a substantial agenda to be go<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

with.<br />

And all this is still only one side of <strong>the</strong> story.<br />
