§13.1 For Whom Did <strong>Jesus</strong> Intend His Message ?<br />

Matt. 5.15<br />

No one ignit<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

lamp puts it under<br />

a bushel, but on a<br />

lampstand, and it<br />

gives light to all<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> house.<br />

Matt. 10.26-27<br />

26 So have no<br />

fear of <strong>the</strong>m; for<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g is covered<br />

up that will not be<br />

uncovered. and<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g secret that<br />

will not become<br />

known.<br />

27 What I<br />

say to you <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dark. tell<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light;<br />

and what vou hear<br />

whispered.<br />

proclaim on<br />

<strong>the</strong> housetops.<br />

Mark 4.21<br />

He said to <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

'Is a lamp brought<br />

<strong>in</strong> to be put under<br />

a bushel, or under<br />

<strong>the</strong> bed, and not<br />

on a lampstand?'<br />

Mark 4.22<br />

22 For <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g hidden.<br />

except to be<br />

disclosed; nor is<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g secret.<br />

except<br />

to come to light.<br />

Luke 8.16<br />

No one after<br />

light<strong>in</strong>g a lamp<br />

hides it under a<br />

jar, or puts it<br />

under a bed, but<br />

puts it on a<br />

lampstand, so that<br />

those who enter<br />

may see <strong>the</strong> light.<br />

Luke 8.17<br />

17 For<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>e is hidden<br />

that will not be<br />

disclosed, nor<br />

anvth<strong>in</strong>g secret<br />

that will not<br />

become known<br />

and come to light.<br />

Luke 11.33<br />

No one after<br />

light<strong>in</strong>g a lamp<br />

puts it <strong>in</strong> a cellar<br />

or under a bushel,<br />

but<br />

on a<br />

lampstand. so that<br />

those who enter<br />

may see <strong>the</strong><br />

radiance.<br />

Luke 12.2-3<br />

2 Noth<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

covered up that<br />

will not be<br />

uncovered. and<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g secret that<br />

will not become<br />

known.<br />

3 Therefore<br />

whatever you<br />

have said <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dark will be heard<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light, and<br />

what vou have<br />

whispered beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

closed doors will<br />

be proclaimed on<br />

<strong>the</strong> housetops.<br />

GTh 33.2<br />

No one lights a<br />

lamp and puts it<br />

under a bushel.<br />

nor does he put it<br />

<strong>in</strong> a hidden place,<br />

but ra<strong>the</strong>r he sets<br />

it on a lampstand<br />

so that all who<br />

enter and leave<br />

may see its light.<br />

GTh 6.4; 33.1<br />

6.4 There is<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g hidden<br />

which shall not be<br />

made manifest,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g covered<br />

that shall rema<strong>in</strong><br />

without be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

revealed.<br />

33.1 What you<br />

shall hear <strong>in</strong> your<br />

ear proclaim <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ear upon<br />

your housetops.<br />

Here aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>re seems to be a sense of contested truth, <strong>the</strong> disciples' sense of<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g been privileged with revelatory <strong>in</strong>sights by <strong>Jesus</strong>, which <strong>the</strong>y had a duty<br />

to make known and which would be v<strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> end. Quite what it was that<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong> had said rema<strong>in</strong>s obscure(!), but <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t is that he is recalled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se say-<br />

<strong>in</strong>gs as imply<strong>in</strong>g that his message was illum<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g, 33 and that (presumably) his<br />

disciples had a responsibility to share it more widely before its truth is f<strong>in</strong>ally re-<br />

vealed to all. It is worth not<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> say<strong>in</strong>gs have not been much developed or<br />

made <strong>the</strong> base for a more elaborate Christian claim to div<strong>in</strong>ely given <strong>in</strong>sights, 34<br />

33. The imagery of teach<strong>in</strong>g, particularly Torah, as light giv<strong>in</strong>g guidance for life is<br />

firmly rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Psalms and Wisdom literature of Israel (e.g., Pss. 43.3; 56.13; 119.105;<br />

Prov. 6.23; Eccl. 2.13; Sir. 32.16) (H. Conzelmann, 'phös', TDNT 9.322).<br />

34. Notably, <strong>the</strong> material ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>in</strong> Mark 4.21-22, 24-25 rema<strong>in</strong>ed scattered through<br />

Q, as also <strong>in</strong> Thomas (see above, chapter 8 n. 295). But Matt. 5.15/Luke 11.33 has been <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a similar 'light' cluster <strong>in</strong> Matt. 5.14-16), and comb<strong>in</strong>ed differently <strong>in</strong> Q <strong>in</strong>to a light/<br />

darkness cluster (Luke 11.34-35/Matt. 6.22-23).<br />
