<strong>February</strong> <strong>2012</strong><br />

� The Iroquois Knowledge Bowl team competed in the Winter <strong>2012</strong> Knowledge Bowl<br />

Open on January 25, <strong>2012</strong>. They did an excellent job placing 2nd in New York State<br />

and in the top half overall. The competition included thousands of students from the<br />

United States as well as students from Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Arab<br />

Emirates.<br />

The Iroquois Knowledge Bowl team consists of Brenna Bigenwald, Jenny Buckley,<br />

Robin Kirchgessner, Aaron Freedman, Max McHale, Adam Mendenhal, Michael Murphy,<br />

Leah O'Sullivan, Tommy Rand, Emel Terzioglu, Bobby Thompson and Julia<br />

Walters. They meet once a week to practice with their advisor Mrs. Sue Smith.<br />

The Knowledge Bowl Open is an academic competition comprised of one hundred<br />

challenging multiple choice questions that cover over thirteen curriculum areas.<br />

� Last December several students of German at IHS took part in the the National AATG<br />

German Exam - a test given to over 25,000 students across the US. The test measures<br />

listening comprehension, reading ability, vocabulary and grammar. This year, many<br />

honors were given to our IHS students, including a special honor for senior Sarah<br />

Nadeau who place first in the greater Rochester area on the advanced test and also<br />

scored in the 96th percentile nationally!<br />

Other students receiving honors include: Amanda Carini (grade 12), Alex Ruhling (12),<br />

James Ornelas (11), Aubriana Kuhmann (9), Lindsay Haefner (9), Nathan Hauk (9),<br />

Elizabeth Caceci (11), Grace Kunkel (9), Peter Ruhling (9), Emma Mendenhall (9), and<br />

Devin McHale (10).<br />

� In January, elementary school students collected winter clothing for students at<br />

Stepping Stones Learning Center. Some of the students at Stepping Stones did not have<br />

warm winter clothing, which meant that they could not go outside to play during the<br />

school day. Under the direction of Dr. Karen Rosenbloom (WICSD) and Danielle Latore<br />

(Stepping Stones) students collected 22 jackets, 42 pairs of snowpants, 3 snowsuits,<br />

118 hats, 120 pairs of gloves and mittens, 20 scarves and 12 pairs of boots!<br />

� Victors Gymnastics Level 7 gymnast Taylor Hoehn received the <strong>2012</strong> I Love NY Cup<br />

Leadership Award for the senior who has shown outstanding leadership in the gym, at<br />

school, and in service to her community.<br />

Taylor Hoehn started with Victors Gymnastics in 2006. In 2009 as a Level 5 gymnast<br />

Taylor was crowned New York State balance beam and all-around champion. She is<br />

currently a Level 7 gymnast.


� The <strong>West</strong> <strong>Irondequoit</strong> <strong>Central</strong> PTSA announced the winners of the creative arts<br />

program, “Now look what I’ve done!” Over 60 entries were received in the categories<br />

of Drawing and Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Mixed Media, Literature and<br />

Musical Compositions. The winners are:<br />

� IHS senior Maria Currie was selected by WROC-TV as a winner of a Scholastic Arts<br />

Spotlight. She was featured in a video on news broadcasts on <strong>February</strong> 13th.<br />

� The <strong>West</strong> <strong>Irondequoit</strong> <strong>Central</strong> PTSA presented Honorary Life Awards to Mary Beth<br />

Lenzi, Mary Beth Sadler and Dave Verweire on Tuesday, <strong>February</strong> 7. This award is<br />

given to those who have shown outstanding service to children and youth.<br />

� IHS kicked off its celebration of Black History Month with an assembly Feb. 1st<br />

featuring "DJ Sight" and "DJ Justin-Credible" from radio station WDKX. The appearance<br />

was arranged by sophomore class President Shania Brinkley to help launch the 10thgraders'<br />

major fund-raiser for their junior prom. The radio personalities shared some<br />

motivational thoughts about the importance of academics, and invited a number of<br />

students to the stage to perform their own hip-hop compositions.


� Students in Mrs. Carrier, Mr. Gardner and Mrs. Verhagen's classes participated in the<br />

Polar Plunge for the second consecutive year. They nearly doubled their fund-raising<br />

goal, raising $2,205 in pledges for the Special Olympics! Those braving the frigid, slushy<br />

waters of Lake Ontario were students, Bryan Hart, Karl Herbert, Tarie Minchak, Ricky<br />

Rivera and Philip Williamson and faculty members, Mr. Shafer, Mrs. Carrier, Mrs.<br />

Verhagen, Mrs. Glidden, Mrs. Orcutt, Mrs. Lenahan, and Mrs. Porter.<br />

� IHS sophomore Madison Russell was recognized with two Silver Key awards in the<br />

Scholastic Art and Writing Contest, Northeast Region. She submitted one short story<br />

and a collection of poems and both won recognition.<br />
