7.2 Results of Working Group 2 Creating a Culture of Internet Use within the EMS Fellowship � Interactive Internet-Use / e-groups (15 points) Explanation: What do we mean by "Culture" => we use the term in the sense of "habit" that is the way people use the internet 1. What to achieve? - create forums for EMS decision-making bodies - networking between Church groups (for example youth, women) with specific purposes - looking for a broader basis of participants on the net - creating an open forum dealing with particular issues (for example mission....) 2. Limitations - technical limitations - capacity and know how - human resources - time 3. Conclusions and recommendations - EMS need to establish an interactive web-site with e-groups… - establish interactive working forums for MC and commissions - EMS in collaboration with Churches should offer training courses - there should be an up- and download section on the website for reports, news… Comments from the plenary - there should be a conscious effort to broaden the basis of groups and networking by facilitating access to training courses - has an existing "internet culture" been taken for granted during discussions of group 2? - you can only create an internet culture by using its instruments! - there is need for education to make people internet-literate - attention should be given to the fact that the use of the internet and the global networking also pushes forward the globalisation process and endangers local cultures 36
7.3 Results of Working Group 3 Technical capacity (15 points) and contribution by reformed-online /cooperation between EMS and reformed online (eleven points) - provide equipment and training at least for the seminaries (limitation) - training for the use of PC and internet could be provided by ecumenical volunteers - training of trainers for reformed online (to make maximum use of its potential) - cooperation: EMS and its member churches and partner churches give important documents to "reformed online" to be provided in the data base - this could reduce the number of printed papers provided - databasing for EMS by reformed online - investment of personnel capacities - use the internet forums of reformed online Comments from the plenary - train ecumenical volunteers in the use of the internet and they provide their knowledge, train others and share the information with other young people there (snow-ball system) - training for networking - training for development issues - different training concepts are necessary - data bases are very expensive, therefore, a cooperation with others (for example reformed online) is necessary and makes sense - we need to develop contextualised contents within the reformed families - no internet access in remote areas => a solution could be to build Church internet cafes which could form "communication islands" 37
