The National <strong>FFA</strong> Day of Service was introduced as a new feature to the <strong>2006</strong> National<br />
<strong>FFA</strong> Convention. Four Indianapolis sites (Gleaners Food Bank, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful,<br />
Habitat for Humanity and Indianapolis Parks & Recreation) were selected for <strong>FFA</strong> members to<br />
participate in a community service project. Each service activity offered a unique project aimed<br />
at improving a part of the community while creating an educational experience for participating<br />
<strong>FFA</strong> members. More than 800 <strong>FFA</strong> members, advisors and alumni provided nearly 3,000 hours<br />
of community service.<br />
Vital to the success of this event was support from Timberland PRO and Toyota. In<br />
addition to a significant financial contribution, Timberland provided in-kind support, including<br />
staff time from key personnel. The<br />
Timberland Social Enterprise team<br />
provided experience and knowledge<br />
that proved to be very useful in<br />
planning and launching the Day of<br />
Service.<br />
An innovative partnership was<br />
launched between central Indiana<br />
Toyota dealerships and seven<br />
central Indiana <strong>FFA</strong> chapters.<br />
These partners worked together<br />
to raise the awareness and need<br />
for food donations to community<br />
food banks. In three weeks, these<br />
unique partners worked together<br />
and collected nearly 5,000 pounds<br />
of canned food and other<br />
nonperishable items.<br />
