With a goal of increasing diversity in <strong>FFA</strong> and agricultural education programs in San Antonio,<br />
Texas, a partnership was formed between the National <strong>FFA</strong> Foundation and Texas A&M University<br />
to invest five years in three of the city’s schools: Southside High School, Burbank High School<br />
and Southwest High School. The funding for this program was provided by Toyota Motor<br />
Sales USA.<br />
Currently in its third year, the program has helped to develop and implement interventions<br />
that increase student diversity in agricultural education programs, and membership,<br />
participation and leadership in <strong>FFA</strong>.<br />
The results, thus far, have been astounding. Overall membership has gone from 110 members<br />
to 238 members – an increase of 136%. Diversity in the program has also skyrocketed, with<br />
a 75% increase in Hispanic involvement. The success of the program belongs not only to the<br />
sponsors and the students themselves, but also to the teachers, administrators, parents and<br />
alumni who have all supported the project’s mission.<br />
