THE HANOVERIAN
No 06| June 2012

Thank you for this
unforgettable experience!
The planning went on for months. The first Mounties from Canada arrived with their
Hanoverians in Verden at end of April. They practiced for about a week before the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police enchanted the audience in the sold-out
Niedersachsenhalle with their magical musical ride!
By Dr. Ludwig Christmann and Julia Martin
The Canadian flag with the maple leaf flew above
the stables of the training and sales center
on Lindhooper Street in Verden for about a week.
36 black Hanoverians had moved into the barns
and were prepared for the big performance. The
Mounties appeared at numerous appointments including
a ride through the city of Verden with an
entry in the city’s Golden Book which was a very
special moment for all participants. Mayor Lutz
Brockmann said, “Horses are of great importance
to the people in the city and in the region. We are
therefore very proud and delighted to be able to
welcome the famous Mounties from Canada.”
It is Friday night, May 4 th : The performance of the
Mounties with their world famous Musical Ride. A

ooth of the Province Saskatchewan placed in the
entry area of the Niedersachsenhalle and brochures
of the Province Alberta helped create a Canadian
atmosphere. The Mounties were awarded standing
ovations for their Musical Ride which was
almost unsurpassable in its precision and its rich
variety with 32 horses participating. The overall
impression was phenomenal with the magnificent
red uniforms and the black horses of Hanoverian
descent. The presentation was not performed with
military seriousness but with a smile in accordance
with good Canadian tradition. The entire group appeared
at the “Meet and Greet” at the very end in
an uncomplicated and sympathetic fashion. Every
spectator had the opportunity to meet the riders
and horses. The riders, male and female and all
trained police officers, approached the guests with
friendliness and openness representing their
homeland Canada as perfect ambassadors.
The remarkable evening began with other program
highlights that were received well, too. The State
Stud represented itself in the colours red and black,
too. Two black stallions being Dancier ridden by
‘Obersattelmeister’ Wolfhard Witte and Hochadel
on a long rein controlled by ‘Gestütsoberwärter’
Heiko Tietze showed off their talents while Wolfhard
Witte as the third member in this act impressed
with an excellent presentation on Lissaro.
Hermann-Josef Witte introduced a presentation
called “Wüstenwind” (desert wind) in cooperation
with Verden’s Riding Clubs Aller-Weser and the
Drag-Hunt Riding Club. The Mounted Games created
quite some excitement. The mounted police
squadron of Hanover under the tutelage of main
police inspector Rabe showed most impressively
what police horses are capable of doing while on
active duty. It was a meeting of the mounted police
from a larger area. The visit of Prime Minister
David Mc Allister was the final highlight. He gave
the starting-signal for the Musical Ride. The longstanding
and good co-operation between the Hanoverian
Association and the RCMP in building up
the breeding program of black horses had laid the
foundation for this presentation. After the performance
the RCMP moved on to Great Britain for a
performance during the throne anniversary celebration
of Queen Elizabeth II. The Musical Ride was
an absolute highlight which will be recorded in the
annals of the Hanoverian Association. The good
relationship with the RCMP was strengthened and
new friendships were created. n
A highlight for all: The Mounties in
front of Verden’s town hall..
In an Interview: Marty Chesser and training‘s leader Martin Kohnen
THE HANOVERIAN: How did you perceive
the days in Verden?
Marty Chesser, Martin Kohnen, “It was an incredibly
wonderful time. We were welcomed with
open arms; the entire organization and the stabling
for our horses was excellent. We last performed
in Germany 20 years ago. The RCMP performed
its Musical Ride at the CHIO in Aachen in
1988. The reception at the town hall was a very
special moment. We were so honored that Mayor
Lutz Brockmann invited us to be recorded in the
Golden Book of the City of Verden. This was a moving
experience for our entire group.”
THE HANOVERIAN: What are the qualifications
for riders and horses to become a part
of the Musical Rides?
Marty Chesser, Martin Kohnen, “The riders
must identify themselves 100 percent with the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police and the Musical
Ride. They have to be proud of their country and
the organization they represent. Do not forget that
we travel six months every year. Team spirit is important.
The riders have to be open towards other
people. After all we are an advertisement. It is not
imperative that participants in the Musical Ride
are excellent riders. There are more important qualities.
We are also are very selective with the horses:
Next to the black color they should measure
1,68 to 1,78 meters in height. The walk and trot
steps of our horses must be about the same length.
Our riders are not professionals; some have been
riding for no more than six months. Therefore the
horses should not have Olympic-quality gaits. Actually
the movement should be rather flat and easy
to sit.”
THE HANOVERIANS: You exclusively ride Hanoverian
horses. Why?
Marty Chesser, Martin Kohnen, “We have
used Hanoverian horses for about 20 years. In earlier
times we used horses with a high share of Thoroughbred
blood. They were not very suitable
though because of their construction and constitution.
The rideability has greatly improved since we
have been using Hanoverians. When former colleagues
visit us today they often cannot believe the
high level of quality of our horses.”
THE HANOVERIAN: What has changed since
you have been using Hanoverians in your
breeding program?
Marty Chesser, Martin Kohnen, “In short: almost
everything! The horses have better conformation
and more caliber. Rideability and suppleness
are important criteria. We have reached a
high level in these criteria. The interior of a horse is
a decisive factor for the Musical Ride. We used to
have horses that revved up during the performance.
We have been very successful since we
have been using Hanoverians. The horses are
good-natured and at the same time exhibit working-willingness.
They master their tasks with excellence
even under inexperienced riders. The riders
nervousness does not influence them. We are
very fortunate that we were introduced to Hanoverians!”
THE HANOVERIANS: What characterizes
your two Hanoverians?
Marty Chesser, “I ride 23-year old Hector. He has
seen it all in his lifetime and he has a lovable interior.
The other horses trust him blind-folded. At 23
Hector is actually a retiree. The use of a horse in a
group does not depend on a certain age but on its
health. They stay as long as they are top fit and
enjoy the work. We usually take the horses from
the breeding farm into the Musical Ride when they
are six years of age. If we are under the impression
that they cannot cope with the demands physically
and/or psychologically we give them more time.”
Martin Kohnen, “My horse’s name is Brent.
He descends from Earl/Weltruhm. I appreciate that
he shines in all three disciplines. He loves to jump
on the cross-country course, masters S-level movements
and he drives. a truly versatile Hanoverian!”
“I have been on tour with the Musical Ride for a
year. Eleven-year old Visty and I have a very good
relationship. She has participated in the Ride for
six years now. She has a strong personality that is
a big challenge at times. But I quickly have her
back under control as she always reacts properly
on given aids.”
“My mare Anne is nine years old and has participated
in the Musical Ride for four years. She is
sensible but honest. She is also very experienced. I
have participated in the Musical Ride since last December.
It has always been my dream to become a
member of the team. I grew up on a horse farm.
We always had quarter horses. Riding English is a
new experience that I greatly enjoy.”
Sarah Brophey with
Pichou by Lincoln/Maurice
“I have participated in the Musical Ride for two
years. I have ridden the 13-year old mare Pichou
for the last year. She is intelligent and always
sweet-tempered. Working with her has taught me
a lot about myself. Pichou does not operate under
pressure. It is all team work.”
“2012 is my third year in the Musical Ride. I am so
grateful for this phenomenal experience to be an
ambassador for Canada as one of the Mounties.
Dude is five years old. It is his first time on tour.
Everything is new to him. He carefully observes all
that happens around him. In spite of his impressive
size he still is a little baby at heart. He relies on me
for everything. I fully appreciate that.”
Breeding
„The circle
closes here!“
He is one of the world’s most successful jumper
riders: Ludger Beerbaum. His name is closely
connected with his top Hanoverians Ratina Z,
Goldfever and Gotha FRH with which he has earned
numerous medals. He has also managed a stallion
station for the last two years.
8 The Hanoverian 06|2012
THE HANOVERIAN: There has been a stallion
station called ‘Beerbaum Stable” since
2010. What is important to you in respect to
breeding?
Ludger Beerbaum, “Establishing the stallion station
had only pragmatic reasons. We have always
competed stallions that we have had to ship somewhere
for semen collection. This grew continuously
until we had to set aside one person just for the
stallions. After mature consideration we decided it
would be better to do this in Riesenbeck. We strict-
ly offered a service to the stallion owners during
the first years. Now with Beerbaum Stables we ‘kill
all birds with one stone’. I have to admit that I was
very skeptical in the beginning. Now I am happy
that everything is runnig so smoothly. We certainly
are no measure for the current situation in the
breeding of horses but the breedings are consistently
increasing. We have a much-improved
connection to the breeders because of the stallion
station. We organize a foal show and the breeders
offer us their young horses. This is where the circle
closes.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Supposedly stallions
that are in breeding service are more difficult
in competition. What are your experiences?
Ludger Beerbaum, “I would not exclusively connect
the behavior of a stallion to his use as a breeding
stallion. There are always stallions that are
difficult to handle. And then there are stallions in
breeding service that are very gentle. It is important
though not to overly stress the stallions. We
reduce the competitions for the stallions we often
collect. It is a balance; we weigh the pros and cons.
There is no difference in the feeding as we already
cater to the needs of each individual competitor in
our competition barn.”
THE HANOVERIAN: How do you evaluate the
Hanoverian breed? Where are the strengths
and where the weaknesses?
Ludger Beerbaum, “For years people smiled almost
pityingly about Hanover and its rigorous selection
and about the importance Hanover placed on the
correctness of the exterior and on the dam lines. It
has showed however that these political moves
were correct. Breeding with correct horses out of
consolidated bloodlines is Hanover’s trump card. A
horse that is correctly put together is less prone to
injuries and is ultimately capable to perform better
over a longer period of time. It is wrong to build up
a breeding program on short-term successes - that
usually does not prove effective.”
THE HANOVERIAN: The number of horses
you have ridden to success is large. All were
different. What is most important to you?
Ludger Beerbaum, “I forgive a horse most everything
as long as bad behavior does not turn out
to be a permanent character flaw; but I have never
encountered that. Many problems that appeared
in horses 15, 20 years ago turned out to be problems
in the keeping of horses rather than issues
with the disposition or the rideability. We see a lot

of improvement in the way that horses are kept. I
see hardly any criteria for exclusion in respect to
the conformation. I have had many extremes in my
barn. You can ignore a lot if the interior is good
and the horses are willing to cooperate.”
THE HANOVERIAN: How important is the pedigree
to you?
Ludger Beerbaum, “The horse as an individual is of
primary importance to me; the breeding is always
interesting though. It is just like a good dinner: If
the ingredients and the preparation are first class
the food tastes better right away. The pedigree is
secondary and my decision is not contingent upon
it. The pedigree plays an important role in the marketing
of horses but is insignificant during the daily
training.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Horses from the Netherlands
and Belgium have taken on a leading
role in show jumping. How do you evaluate
the current German breeding program?
Ludger Beerbaum, “Competition stimulates the
market! In my opinion we are dealing with a normal
cycle that changes over the years. Nonetheless
Hanoverian breeders should not turn their backs
on their principles and continue to breed correct
horses. Breeders in smaller countries like the
Netherlands or Belgium have an advantage: competition
and breeding are closer together. This fact
still bears great potential for the future.
Some breed associations in Germany are far removed
from competitions. Riders and breeders must
meet at all events, on horse shows as well as mare
shows and communicate. The breeding and competing
of horses must harmonize!”
THE HANOVERIAN: You grew up in Lower
Saxony. What is your relationship to the Hanoverian
breed?
Ludger Beerbaum, “I grew up in Adelebsen and
started riding there. I made it into top competitions
through my participation in numerous team competitions
and smaller as well as larger championships.
From that period of my life I know today’s
president Manfred Schäfer and his father Jürgen. I
often met them on horse shows. I competed in the
same team as Manfred Schäfer as a young rider.
We are still in contact.”
THE HANOVERIAN: You were very successful
with Hanoverian horses: Ratina Z, Goldfever
and currently Gotha FRH. Which horse holds
a special place?
Ludger Beerbaum, “Posing this question is to me
as if you ask a mother which is her favorite child! I
cannot answer that question. A very special horse
in my life was the one I started my career with in
1979 when I was 16 years old: Wetteifernde by
Wolfsburg/Duden II – more Hanoverian blood is
probably impossible to find! I rode everything with
her from jumper classes at the A-level to earning
the bronze medal at the European Championships
for young riders in Cervia; I spent many nights with
her in her stall; we had a very special relationship.
She spent her retirement years with me until she
died in 2001 at the age of 27. I consider my biggest
competitive success winning the Olympic gold
medal with Classic Touch in Barcelona in 1992.
THE HANOVERIAN: Olympia 2012 is right in
front of our doors. Gotha FRH is currently
your championship horse. What makes her
special?
Ludger Beerbaum, “Gotha FRH is clearly my number
one! She has her peculiarities and from her
exterior point of view she is not unproblematic.
But she convinces with her talent. I allow for compromises
in rideability if I cannot achieve perfection
and harmony also with respect to the contact.
Gotha FRH came to Riesenbeck as a four-year old
was too well fed, just broken to saddle and without
condition or strength. Her first small jumps
gave me an inkling of her talent. That convinced
me to keep her. I spent most of my time lunging
her to get rid of the tension. I rode her for three
months in walk, trot and canter only. The contact
was inconsistent; to jump her was out of the question.
A pure challenge! As Gotha FRH became older
the focus on her training at home remained on
dressage work especially on the improvement of
her submissiveness and subtleness. It is sound advice
to not start attacking a problem two to three
days before a horse show; deal with these challenges
during the off-season instead. Gotha FRH is a
personality and she will not subordinate 100 percent.
That does not just apply to riding her in competition;
it also applies to leading her.”
THE HANOVERIAN: What is the training of
Gotha FRH like in preparation for the Olympic
Games?
Ludger Beerbaum, “Principally the training is the
same as during every other season when working
the horses towards a show highlight whether it is
towards a championship or the Olympic Games. I
save Gotha FRH for the decisive qualifications. I
have developed a horse show schedule with larger
breaks. I focus on intense work and training during
these breaks.” n
Breeding
A strong team from Riesenbeck:
Henrik v. Eckermann, Ludger Beerbaum,
Marco Kutscher and Philipp
Weishaupt.
Satisfaction FRH is not only in
demand as a breeding stallion; he is
also highly successful in competition
with his rider Marco Kutscher.
At 3 P.M. the powerfully moving and very charming
mare with head number 1 called Serena-Serenity
entered the Niedersachsenhalle to
start off the May-Auction. She trotted right into
the hearts of the spectators with elastic and supple
movement. “The mare is a dream,” auction rider
Philip Ruwe raved. “She is in a good mood every
day and tries very hard to do everything right. She
is an ideal horse for training.” Sabine Tietz from
Loxstedt exhibited this daughter of Sandro Hit/Fuerst
Heinrich. Her breeder is Heinz Günnermann,
Loxstedt. Jeanine Pagel an advisor for dressage
horses remembers, “The mare was presented on
the final selection date here in Verden. We liked
her right away with her three exceptional basic
gaits. She has a special appearance and everyone
who tried her was filled with enthusiasm!” Serena-Serenity
entered the final ring as the collection’s
favorite. Auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener,
“I am happy about the exhibitors trust in the auction
program here in Verden. This trust was confirmed
when she placed the mare in our care.”
The auction started. The bids came fast. Eight different
yellow bidding boards were raised alternately.
They reflected buying interest. Auctioneer
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen kept track of the bids
in his usual fashion and finally dropped the hammer
at 40,000 Euros. A young family - seated in
block 22 - was overjoyed. It had won the bidding
duel. The mare does not have to travel far to her
new stable in Hannover. Serena-Serenity will be
with a loving family that is looking forward to a
joint future so much. Guests from more than 15
nations witnessed the sale of a collection of riding
horses that included dressage and jumper horses
next to recreational horses. Versatility was the
trademark of this year’s May auction.
A special selection of leisure horses
In addition to dressage and/or jumping ability 17
riding horse impressed with their composure and
reliability. They presented themselves as special
offers for leisure riders. The 13-day auction training
period provided information about the suitability
of the horses as leisure partners. Some riding horses
developed beautifully and accepted the training
with plastic tarps, umbrellas and rattleboxes
just fine. Advisors Jeanine Pagel and Thomas Schönig
confidently recommended these auction participants
as riding horses also suitable for leisure
use. The leisure horses were earmarked through
description, impressive photos and videos in the
auction catalog. We addressed a broad spectrum
of prospective customers through this effort. We
did not only speak to the dressage or jumper rider
but also to the recreational rider. We shall offer riding
horses with leisure suitability on every winter-,
May-, summer- and November auction and
also at the Alsfeld Advent.”
Especially foreign customers appreciated the collection:
37 horses sold to 14 different nations.
Conte du Rouet by Contendro/Balou du Rouet
Conte du Rouet by Contendro/Balou du Rouet does
not only convince with his talent at a fence but also
with his good disposition. He was the most expensive
horse from the jumper cadre with a sale price of
20,000 Euros.

(breeder/exhibitor: Dr. Alexandra Görgens, Mühlen)
was the top selling jumper. Customers from
France bought the talented jumper mare for
20,000 Euros. Shiny black Lubina sold to customers
from France, too for 14,000 Euros. During the
training period the mare exhibited her moving ability
with best rideability and complete trust in the
rider. French advisor Ariane Pourtavaf had recommended
both athletes to her customers. Neighboring
country Great Britain is not only in top shape
with respect to dressage. Buyers from the United
Kingdom acquired the second largest contingent
Your Opinion
Stefanie Sarah Scherer wrote this email after
the May-auction:
“I am looking for a new horse in the near future as
mine has sustained a serious injury. I do not like
many dealers’ or private sale’s ads in the Internet.
They do not sound honest and reliable. For this reason
I attended Verden’s May auction last weekend.
Unfortunately you do not always hear good
things about auction horses, i.e. ‘If you buy a horse
there you will have to turn it out for a year so it has
time to recover.‘
The auction surprised me in a positive way! You
cannot deny that some horses reflected the stress
from the days before; many appeared tired and
slept. Others however exhibited strong nerves.
They gave the impression that they enjoyed the
of horses with a total of five young Hanoverians.
These buyers included standing clients as well as
new customers who bought young talents for
eventing.
Breeding manager Dr. Schade and auction manager
Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener agreed, “The price
structure was moderate. The auction was buyerfriendly
and we were able to serve many different
levels of buyers. The market is content. Customers
willing to spend 10,000 Euros for a Hanoverian
horse of good quality were well taken care of. n
tasks at hand. A note I found very considerate
caught my attention. It asked for everyone’s understanding
that some young horses could not be tested
on the day of the auction because it would just
have been too much for them. Furthermore I liked
the “Latest News” column in the auction brochure.
It listed something special about each horse for
instance if a horse trailers well or if a rider needs to
be careful mounting the horse. In addition to these
first impressions I was surprised in a positive way
about the organization, the care and the management
of an auction and will now consider
purchasing a horse on an auction as a valid option.
Praise to the team and to the association! I might
just bid on a horse at your auction in the near future.”
The official change of hands of a
evening before the May auction.
The auction department had
auctioned off services of some
employees during the gala evening
of the 126 th elite auction.
For instance Thomas Schönig
had offered to be a chauffeur for
one day. Jörn Ahrends offered
his services as a trainer on a horse
show, Sabrina Schönfeld as a
horse show groom, Jeanine Pagel
as a lorry driver and Philip
Ruwe as a rider. Hartmut Kettelhodt
offered a seat next to him
on a selection trip. Auction manager
Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener received
the highest bid for his
service: 4,000 Euros. He will
mow the lawn on an estate in
Great Britain! The total amount
generated during this fundraiser
was 7,625 Euros. A cheque over
this amount was presented to
the organization “Lebenshilfe
When father
and son ...
First pony Felix moved onto the farm of the Schulze
Family in Steinhorst then Fjord horses followed and
finally the jumper mare Penny. Father Hermann and
son Torben have been devoted to the Hanoverian
breed for more than 20 years.
12 The Hanoverian06|2012
“The amount of time and labor horse breeding requires
is truly immense,” 37-year old Torben Schulze
says, “we decided to sell our breeding products
as foals right from the beginning.” Father Hermann
(64) managed the horse breeding operation
with his 61-year old wife Hannelore as a sideline.
“Sometimes you wonder whether family life and
free time suffer too much or not,” the young building
engineer adds. A life without horses however
is unthinkable to him and his father. “All foals are
included in the family and especially the time of
foaling compensates for all the efforts!” The almost
retiree Hermann Schulze admits that raising
foals adds a lot to the quality of life. As a matter of
fact horses did not play a large role in the life of
Family Schulze in the beginning. Workhorses
handled the farm work during the era of the
grandfather but in time were replaced by modern
machines. That special equine virus slowly but
steadily infected all family members when the
children Michael and Torben received a pony as a
gift. The sons quickly outgrew the Shetland pony
so Father Hermann went out and find a suitable
horse for his growing children.
“One day my husband showed up on the farm
with a Fjord horse mare,” Mother Hannelore remembers,
“He was supposed to buy a riding horse
for our children.”Being the sensible one in the family
her husband had to work hard to convince her
that Fjord horses would suit the sons beautifully
and that breeding horses was a sensible responsibility.
“The Fjord horses allowed for a quiet and
gentle entry into horse breeding,” Hermann Schulze
is still proud of the development, which started
30 years ago. Breeding horses invigorated the family
life. The Schulzes would spend the weekends
together because of the combination of riding and
breeding. Hermann Schulze proved his good sense
for successful breeding combinations while breeding
Fjord horses. The breeding farm Steinhorst
quickly became a sought-after address in the Pony
Association Hanover.
Especially his oldest son Michael developed strong
ambitions in competitions. Even today the 41-one
year old competes in jumper classes at the M-level
and manages his own boarding facility in neighboring
Hankensbuettel. Father Hermann once again
had to start a search for a suitable horse with the
appropriate jumping ability to meet the demands
of his son with respect to the sport of jumping.
Eight-year old Penny was the first sport horse to
enter the barn in Steinhorst and the love for Warmblood
horses was awakened in Family Schulze. The
foundation for a Hanoverian breeding program
was laid with the acquisition of the mare Diana by
Don Juan/Wienerwald (breeder: Heinrich Pengel,
Dannenberg) who came to the barn of Family
Schulze as a yearling in 1990. Hermann Schulze
immediately landed a direct hit! Diana delivered
the successful competitor Felicitas by Fabriano in
1992. Felicitas competed in jumper classes at the
S-level with her Hessian rider Peter Gutberlet in
the past and currently does with Anne Gutberlet.
As Family Schulze decided to redirect their breeding
program to dressage lines Diana was sold.
She was successful at the S-level herself after four
breeding seasons.
A path breaking decision
Son Torben made a path-breaking decision in
1992 with the purchase of the mare Lanthana by
Lanthan/Dakar (breeder: Albert Vielitz, Alt-Seeha-

gen) and started breeding dressage horses. From
then on 17-year old Torben was a partner to his
dad with equal rights in respect to the breeding of
horses. “I borrowed money from my godfather to
buy Lanthana as a yearling. I paid him back in installments
over several years. Today I am very glad
that I had the courage to do that,” Torben Schulze
proudly tells about the purchase of his broodmare.
And proud he may be as Lanthana founded today’s
damline of the Schulze Family! The state’s premium
mare is still used as a broodmare in Steinhorst.
Father and son Schulze made another fundamental
decision at the time: They only wanted to continue
breeding with state’s premium mares. They
succeeded in their endeavor because Lanthana delivered
mainly fillies of which among others Pamina
by Prince Thatch xx, Wachau I by Weltmeyer,
Wiena’s Dream by Weltmeyer, Sundrice by Sandro
Hit, Santana by Sandro Hit also received the state’s
premium award. They bought today’s 12-year old
River Queen O by Rotspon (breeder: Matthias Ohmen,
Sinstedt) to complement the damline with
another dressage line. Proven bloodlines from stallions
like Arlberg, Brandenburg, Louis Heslegard,
Conte Cristo and Highcruiser have flown into the
breeding program of Family Schulze through Lanthana
and her line of Dahlie. Outstanding producers
like Lehnsherr, Dorint, Friesenstern, Del Piero,
Don Paulo, Di Versace, Weltjunge, World Diamond
O and Rubiano have been added through River
Queen O and her line of Jugendgespielin.
“We always tried to combine performance willingness
with rideability in our breeding program. The
quality of movement is a decisive factor and its
presence in the bloodlines is essential. Proven producers
like Weltmeyer or Sandro Hit are of utmost
importance to potential buyers and riders,” Torben
and Hermann Schulze both say. All the more important
is the fact that all broodmares have received
a score of 8,0 or better for rideability. “The
grey sire Santini with his elegant appearance and
his big open eyes has always been our personal
favorite.” Sometimes you have to hold back and
listen to the demand on the horse market. This becomes
even more important if you try to market
only foals.
Prospective buyers from Germany as well as from
foreign countries quickly became aware of the exceptional
quality of the foals from the breeding
farm Steinhorst. Verden’s auction program offers
the best marketing possibilities. Family Schulze
also entertains good relations with Paul Schockemöhle.
The personal contact to buyers and the individually
designed care do the rest. The mares
from the home of Schulze are not just excellent
broodmares; they also convince in the dressage
ring with their excellent movement and high performance
willingness just like their male offspring.
The International Dressage and Jumper Festival in
Verden in 2010 became a very special event for
Family Schulze as four horses out of their breeding
program competed. State’s premium mare Hotline’s
Best by Hotline out of Sundrice finished the Hanoverian
Riding Horse Championships in second
place. This mare had already impressed at the
Mare Show in Sottrum as the overall champion. It
comes to no surprise that she was sold to France
for a six-figure amount! Back to the Hanoverian
Riding Horse Championships: Sean Connery by Sir
Donnerhall became champion in the division for
three-year old stallions. The mare River Queen O
produced Sean Connery in 2007. He sold on
Verden’s stallion sales in 2009 for 195,000 Euros.
He was the highest-priced not-licensed stallion.
His one-year older half-brother out of Hotline’s
Best, the gelding Darboven by Don Kennedy, had
also qualified for the World Championships. Darboven
sold for 135,000 Euros on Verden’s elite
auction in the fall of 2009. The stallion Santo by
Santini out of the mare Wachau I has successfully
competed in international dressage classes with
his Dutch rider Kevin de Bruin. The pair placed
forth. In the meantime Santo is successful at the
Grand Prix level. “This is a great validation for us.
After all the successes of our horses in breed
shows or on horse shows add greatly to the marketability
of our foals. They are high in demand. As
we sell them very early on we can but only observe
their further development and where and to whom
they might be sold again,” Torben explains the
other side of the sale strategy. Time limitations
do not allow any further involvement. n
