We are “GROWING” the distance in 2013! Our expansion into 

Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches this past Fall experienced an incredibly

and Parkland this May! That magazine will be owned and published by Julie

Dear Residents, 

As we close the holiday season, our thoughts go to families in our 

community who continue to do the best they can in this adverse economy. Our 

thoughts also go to our returning military men and women who are rejoining 

their families and their communities at a time of diffi cult economic realities, but 

as a community in the City of Pembroke Pines, we always pull through because 

of the dedication and concern that people show to one another. 

I wanted to write this article about the American Cancer Society and the 

Relay for Life to be held on March 1-2, 2013 at Walter C. Young Middle School 

here in Pembroke Pines. This year’s Relay for Life, chaired by WPLG Channel 10 

news anchor Kristi Kruger, and I as honorary co-chair, is so important for cancer 

survivors. The planned weekend of Relay for Life activities has teams that come 

together to raise money to help eradicate this terrible disease. The City of Pembroke 

Pines used to be number one in past Relay for Life fundraiser efforts, but dropped in 

recent times because of inclement weather and other obstacles. My team is called 

The Mayor’s Gang in which many city employees— fi refi ghters, police, teachers and 

general employees—participate to raise money to support cancer research and help 

cancer survivors. The City of Pembroke Pines and the American Cancer Society want 

to invite all residents to this 18-hour event to help fi nd a cure for cancer. This overnight 

event features many activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. 

Activities include Survivor Dinner, Survivor Walk, Luminaria Ceremony and team 

activities throughout the event. 

For our March 2013 event, I am hoping that many more people in the community 

will participate by joining in the activities planned to take place at Walter C. Young 

Middle School, 901 NW 129th Avenue in Pembroke Pines, Friday, March 1st through 

Saturday, March 2nd, 2013. Or you can go online to donate to this worthy cause 

through Relay for Life of Pembroke Pines at relay.acsevents.org and search for team 

“Mayor’s Gang” where you can enter your donation. If you have questions about the

After participating in Season 3 of NBC’s “The Voice,” seventeenyear-old 

Joselyn Rivera has become a super star. She is currently putting 

the fi nishing touches on her fi rst album, which she expects to release 

this year. Although she has worked with some of the biggest names 

in the music business, she still has a special place in her heart for her 

hometown of Pembroke Pines. 

Born prematurely, Joselyn was in and out of hospitals when she 

was young. Until the age of fi ve, she was extremely introverted and 

refused to speak. After seeking guidance from a variety of specialists, 

one doctor prescribed music therapy instead of medication. It did not 

take long before she broke out of her shell and discovered her passion 

for performing. “I started to sing, dance, and express myself,” said 

Joselyn. “The power of music healed me and I hope it can do the same 

for others. It is my goal to make a difference in this world through the 

power of music.” 

Joselyn performed in public for the fi rst time when she was 10 

years old. She entertained at local events in Pembroke Pines, such 

as the Snow Fest, Veterans Day ceremony, Kids’ Connection, July 4th 

celebration, Memorial Day ceremony, and more. She worked closely with 

Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator, who vividly remembers the fi rst 

time she heard Joselyn’s demo tape six years ago. “We immediately 

recognized her talent and gave her the opportunity to perform whenever 

possible,” said Francie. “We watched her grow up on our little stage. We 

are so proud of her.” On October 15, Mayor Frank C. Ortis declared it 

“Joselyn Rivera Day.” “My city means so much to me,” said Joselyn. “I 

am grateful for the support of so many people and would not be where 

I am today without them.” 

Throughout the years, Joselyn participated in a variety of 

competitions and performed at several major events. She sang at a 

Monday Night Football halftime show, the Florida Derby, the opening 

of the Marlins new baseball stadium, and a Miami Heat game. She 

performed live in front of Archbishop Desmond Tutu during the Cavalia 

presentation in Miami in 2011. She worked with major recording artists 

like Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and many others in 

fundraiser videos for Gota de la Vida- City of Hope Cancer Research. She 

was a lead singer on the opening song of the 2011 Univision Network’s 

Christmas Special. She also won a singing contest on a local Spanish 

Television show “Aqui Todos Ganan.” 

In fall 2012, Joselyn auditioned for Season 3 of the Voice and was 

selected. She was a top contender among the judges from the very fi rst 

episode. They consistently raved about her performances, as well as her 

stage presence and star qualities. She made it all the way to the second 

round of live performances, until the public voter her off the show. “It 

was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Joselyn. “It was incredible 

to part of a competition with so many amazing artists and vocalists.” 

While she was on the show, she had the opportunity to work closely 

with Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine. “Christina is super nice, but 

she is a very tough coach,” said Joselyn. “She really challenged me and 

taught me to be more confi dent in my own style. Adam also taught me 

a tremendous amount, including ways to connect with the audience and 

to add energy to my performance.” 

Joselyn says that she has had many offers since she left the 

show. She spends most of her time at the studio, where she works 

under the tutelage of Emilio Estefan, as well as a number of talented 

writers and producers. “I have been working on developing my 

own music, sound and style,” said Joselyn. “I am looking forward 

to releasing my first album.” 

Joselyn still fi nds time to volunteer at her church and for charity 

events for children’s causes, such as Easter Seals, Make a Wish 

Foundation, Jack and Jill Children’s Center, Love Jen Foundation and 

many more. “It is such a great feeling when my singing brings a smile 

to a child’s face,” said Joselyn.

Prepares One Hundred and Three (103) 

Thanksgiving Baskets Complete with Trimmings!

The Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to provide Thanksgiving baskets for the 

less fortunate in the City of Pembroke Pines is a thirty-seven year tradition organized 

and implemented by the staff at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. 

For the fourth year in a row, the Pembroke Pines Professional Fire Fighters 

Local 2292 supported the Thanksgiving meal program with a donation of 

$1,000.00. “This donation made it possible for us to round out the Thanksgiving 

baskets and purchase 103 Turkeys,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community 

Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Donations were also 

received from the students and teachers from the Pembroke Pines Charter 

School System, City employees, residents, businesses and our own Southwest 

Focal Point Community Center members.”

“The Thanksgiving Baskets are complete with a turkey, and all the trimmings 

including a pumpkin pie!” said organizer Diane Shawcross of the SWFP Community 

Center. “The Professional Firefi ghters of Pembroke Pines wanted to insure that the 

citizens of Pembroke Pines enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the 

trimmings,” said Captain Sammy Brown, who also serves as the President of the 

Professional Fire Fighters of Pembroke Pines Local 2292. “We extend our thanks 

to everyone in the community who has donated to help make this Thanksgiving 

a happy one for families in need,” added Shechter.

Pembroke Pines to 

Celebrate 53rd BirthdayBy Debby Teich 

Join the City of Pembroke Pines as it celebrates its 53rd 

birthday with the Pembroke Pines Fair, featuring a carnival, 

concerts, entertainment and a variety of community based 

activities and events. The Fair will be held from April 4 - 14, 

at the Pembroke Pines City Center, located at 10300 Pines 

Blvd. Proceeds will benefi t the City of Pembroke Pines Charter 

Schools. “Although Pembroke Pines has grown into a large city, 

it still has a strong sense of community,” said Francie Novo, 

Special Events Coordinator. “The fair is a great way to celebrate 

the City’s birthday with family, friends and neighbors.” 

The event kicks off on March 22, with Mayor Ortis’ 11th 

Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament 

at Pembroke Lakes Country Club. This exciting 18-hole 

tournament includes a putting contest, lunch, dinner, prizes, 

awards, live and silent auctions, and more. Golfers will also have 

the opportunity to win a car in the hole-in-one competition. 

The fourth annual “Taste of Pines” will be held on April 4, 

from 6 to 9pm. Guests will enjoy samples of delicious cuisine 

from more than 30 restaurants throughout the Pembroke Pines 

area, complimented by an assortment of beverages, as they listen 

to the sounds of a local jazz band. Last year, approximately 

500 people attended and organizers are hoping to double that 

number. Tickets will be sold through the Charter School 

system, as well as at various locations throughout Pembroke 

Pines. Quantities are limited. 

April 4 also kicks off 11 days of fun at City Center, including 

a full carnival with Midway rides, food and attractions – 

with something special happening every day. There will be 

continuous entertainment from local bands, dance groups, local 

school groups and organizations. There will also be a business 

and vendor Expo, as well as special visits from the Food Truck 

Round Up. Hundreds of visitors will get a slice of the ten-foot 

birthday cake during the celebration. 

On April 6, the Professional Firefi ghters of Pembroke Pines 

Local Union 2292 will present the Little Miss Sweetheart 

Pageant. Approximately 40 girls, ages 3 to 5 years old, will be 

judged on their poise and personalities. They will all be treated 

like royalty and judges will crown a princess and a queen. All 

contestants must be residents of Pembroke Pines. 

One of the nights will be a designated for Charter Schools, 

with a variety of performances and activities related to the 

Charter School Systems in Pembroke Pines. Students and 

parents will have an opportunity to meet their principals and 

show their school spirit. 

Organizers will also continue their efforts to promote 

recycling. Last year, students, residents and businesses brought 

over 1,000 cans to Fair to support the City’s participation in 

the 2012 Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge. They built 

a fi ve-foot birthday cake with cans and won fi rst place in the 

“Most Innovative Campaign” category of the Challenge. The 

City received a $25,000 grant as part of the award. Novo, who 

led the effort, is still considering ideas for this year. 

Elizabeth Rakow attended the Fair last year and plans to 

bring her three children again this year. “My kids and I look 

forward to the event all year,” said Rakow. “The kids love the 

rides and the entertainment is always great. I am proud to be 

a resident of Pembroke Pines and look forward to helping the 

City celebrate.”

Each year Pembroke Pines is represented 

by three separate Optimist Clubs within the 

American Youth Football League (AYFL). 

Pembroke Pines Optimist, West Pembroke Pines 

Optimist and Pasadena Lakes Optimist Clubs 

continually field the best of the best football 

programs, coaches and players in the AYFL and 

2012 was no exception! In fact, 2012 could be 

referred to as nothing less than EXCEPTIONAL! 

Pembroke Pines Optimist (PPO) had a 

dominant season amassing 69 total regular 

season wins and had the following divisions 

go undefeated in regular season: PW, 95, 105, 

115 and Unlimited! PPO earned their spots as 

high seed in 5 of the 7 divisional Superbowl 

finals. The PPO 95s won over West Park 8-7; 

PPO 105s massacred Miramar 22-0; PPO 115s 

pummeled Plantation 32-20; and PPO Unlimited 

trounced Tamarac 26-14. Congratulation to PPO 

for bringing home four Superbowl 2012 titles! 

West Pembroke Pines Optimist (WPPO) took 

38 total regular season wins, had the 125‘s go

the final round of playoffs, and earned high 

seed in the 125s Superbowl Game. The Wildcats 

finished off Plantation in overtime with a 7-6 

victory and Superbowl Title! Way to go WPPO

Pasadena Lakes Optimist (PLO) had a great season 

winning 37 total regular season games and had two 

teams in the fi nal round of playoffs. They represented 

well in the playoffs knocking out a PPO team 8-6 to 

earn high seed in the 140s Superbowl. However, they 

were not able to overcome Davie in the end, losing 

6-19. Great job PLO for a great season! 

Three Optimist Clubs in Pembroke Pines had 

at least one team representing in all seven AYFL 

division Superbowls and they walked away with 5 

Superbowl Championships!

Yong-In Tiger 

At Yong-In Tiger, we teach Olympic style Tae Kwon Do. We have an Elite Sparring 

Team as well as Demonstration Team. In 2012 we had 17 students represent Yong-In 

Tiger at the Florida State Championship; each placed with a medal. This summer we 

also entered fi ve students in the National Junior Olympic Championship held in Dallas, 

TX. Our students gave a stellar performance earning three medals – (1) Gold, (1) 

Silver, and (1) Bronze. 

We offer classes at several times throughout the week in order to accommodate the 

busiest schedules, including lessons on Saturdays. In addition, we offer a Family Class 

which encourages family members to work together in a self-motivating environment. 

Family Class is an ideal way to interact with your children! 

As of late November we launched a Self Defense Boot Camp catering specifi cally 

to ladies. Our Self Defense Boot Camp places an emphasis on cardio vascular work and 

self defense, using real life scenarios. We teach our lady participants how to react under 

stressful, life-threatening circumstances while also providing them a fun environment in 

which to exercise and lose weight. 

At Yong-In, we offer Junior and Little Tiger classes by belt levels for ages four and up. In 

addition, we also have a Black Belt only class which caters to our most advanced members. 

Finally, we offer special private lessons for members seeking individual attention. 

Our main instructor, Master Yu has been an active participant in Tae Kwon Do for 

over 25 years, and has achieved the title of 6th Degree Black Belt. Master Yu started 

competing as a child in Korea, and in 2001 was the Korean National Champion. He 

received a Bachelor’s Degree from Yong-In University in 2004 after having majored 

in Tae Kwon Do. In fulfi llment of a life-long dream, Master Yu came to the United 

States where he immediately pursued a career as an instructor. His background as a 

young competitor provided Master Yu the foundation to help children and adults alike, 

achieve their maximum potential by developing their skills physically and cognitively. 

Curriculums focus on the needs of the individual and cater to their personal abilities. 

Master Yu is joined at Yong-In Tae Kwon Do by Chief Instructor Tony Egues, and 

Instructor Erik Heh. Yong-In is recognized by KuKKiwon, which is the World’s Headquarter 

for Tae Kwon Do. KuKkiwon certifi es our black belt degree.

While academic skills are important, research has shown that the life 

skills that are learned through play are even bigger indicators of success 

Chase Singletary has been passionate about wrestling for as long as he can 

remember. His bedroom is fi lled with trophies and awards. The fi fteen-year-old 

student at Somerset Academy in Pembroke Pines recently won a national title 

and was excited to add his fi rst belt to the collection. 

Chase participated in the prestigious Super 32 Challenge Wrestling 

Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina, held October 20-21. He competed 

in the 145 lb. middle school division, along with over 400 wrestlers from 

throughout the United States. He won one of only 28 belts given to the 2,400 

wrestlers at the tournament. “I have been dedicated to wrestling my whole 

life and have worked really hard to get where I am,” said Chase. “It feels 

amazing to win a national title.” 

He entered his fi rst wrestling tournament when he was only three years 

old. He started competing at the national level when he was ten. Since then, 

he has placed third at two national tournaments and second at two world 

tournaments. Locally, Chase has been competing against 18-year-olds at FHSA 

high school tournaments since he entered middle school. 

In 6th grade, Chase won 2nd place at the state tournament. “This was 

the fi rst time that a 6th grader has ever made it to the state fi nals in Florida,” 

said Joe Blasucci, who has been coaching him for the past three years. In 7th 

grade he won fi rst place and became a high school state champion. “Chase is

later in life than a child’s academic readiness. Good grades and academic 

ability can help a child get to where they need to go but creativity, 

determination, follow through and being able to work with others will 

take them above and beyond that place. 

Play often involves engaging others socially, which is another vital life 

skill. When children don’t have adequate opportunities to play with other 

children, they don’t have the chance to practice the skills needed in fostering 

relationships. Two children working together in the sandbox to build a castle, 

negotiating the give and take of play could translate later in life to two adults 

working cooperatively as a team on an important architectural project for 

their firm! Play is that vital for future success! 

Play comes in many forms and can include play dates, the playground, 

dramatic play and blocks at the preschool age to team sports, 

neighborhood play and game nights with older children. Play can be 

structured or unstructured, guided by adults or led by children. For some 

children play will come naturally, but for others it may need to be coaxed 

and encouraged. Regardless of how it’s done, it’s important for parent to 

provide environments that allow for play and foster that type of learning 

so that our children are well prepared for a competitive future.

Chase wrestles all year long as part 

of Somerset’s South Florida Lightning. During the season, which runs from 

October to February, he practices a minimum of three hours a day for local 

competitions. The rest of the year, he travels with the team to tournaments 

to compete against some of the best clubs in the country. 

Blasucci says that Chase is very easy to coach. “Chase loves to be 

challenged,” said Blasucci. “He has gotten used to wrestling kids who are 

several divisions ahead of him. He watches and studies good wrestlers and 

is always two steps ahead of his opponent during a match. Wrestling is an 

intense sport, but he remains very calm on the mat. At 6 feet tall, he uses 

his leverage and is very good on top.” 

Chase takes honors classes and has a 3.9 GPA. He plans to attend Ohio 

State University to study law. He is hoping to earn a wrestling scholarship, so 

he can wrestle for his favorite coach, Tom Ryan.

How can my child’s anxiety during the dental visit be reduced?

Are dental x-rays safe and are they necessary?

because they serve as a “roadmap” to help the dentist make an accurate diagnosis of your 

child’s dental needs. We consider x-rays a necessary component in your child’s visit to the 

dentist, but exceptions apply and will be discussed with you by the dentist during your visit.

Is fl uoride safe? 

Studies have shown that topical application of fl uoride has great benefi ts in 

strengthening tooth enamel and reducing dental cavities. We apply a small amount of 

fl uoride either in a gel or varnish directly onto the teeth during your initial and recall 

exams, i.e. twice per year. 

My son/daughter recently had trauma to one of his teeth and now it 

is dark. Is the tooth dead? 

Discoloration of teeth is common after tooth trauma. It is caused by blood being 

extruded from the pulp of the tooth onto the surrounding tissue during the accident. 

Contrary to popular belief, a discolored tooth is not a dead tooth! A traumatized tooth, 

however, has a great likelihood of becoming necrotic and having to be extracted due to 

the formation of an abscess. Any tooth that has been traumatized should be followed up 

on a regular basis to identify if indeed it has developed an abscess. 

Why does my son/daughter have white spots on his/her teeth? 

When white spots are seen on baby teeth, this is usually a sign of 

decalcification that can quickly progress into becoming a cavity if proper 

dietary and oral hygiene measures are not taken. White spots on permanent 

teeth can also be caused by decalcification or from a condition known as 

fluorosis in which excessive fluoride becomes incorporated into the enamel 

of the permanent tooth during its early stages of formation. If white spots 

are seen on teeth, schedule an appointment to discuss with the dentist. If 

caught early, these conditions can be prevented!

SYDNEY & ALEXANDRIA COHEN FOUNDATION 

Donates Incubator to 

Memorial Hospital West By 

Jennifer and Brian Cohen of Plantation have fi rst-hand 

experience dealing with the struggles of premature birth. In an 

effort to honor and celebrate their healthy twin daughters, their 

nonprofi t foundation recently donated a GE OnmiBed Giraffe 

Incubator to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at 

Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines. 

When the Cohen twins were born at 31 weeks gestation, 

Alexandria weighed 2 lbs. 14 oz. and Sydney weighed 3 lbs. 3 

oz. They spent fi ve weeks in the NICU at Memorial Hospital 

West. Today, they are healthy, thriving 9-year-olds with no 

complications from having been born so early. “Although it has 

been many years, I will never forget the sounds and smells of the 

NICU,” said Jennifer. “My husband and I feel very fortunate 

that both of our daughters came out of the NICU without any 

problems, but not all premature babies are as lucky. We knew 

we needed to fi nd a way to pay it forward.” 

In 2008, the Cohen’s started The Sydney & Alexandria Cohen 

Foundation and began raising money to purchase an incubator 

for the hospital. “We wanted to give future babies the best 

chance for a healthy life,” said Jennifer. They partnered with 

local business and restaurants, which donated a percentage of 

sales on certain days. They also sold nail polish, held a penny 

fundraiser, organized a gala, and much more. Although the 

Foundation was struggling to raise the $40,000 necessary to buy 

the incubator, the Cohen’s were determined to succeed. 

Last year, the Foundation received two checks that helped 

make the Cohen’s dream a reality. In January 2012, Jennifer 

was selected as one of four winners of a national search by “O 

The Oprah Magazine” for the “The Beauty of Giving Back” 

promotion with Cover Girl Cosmetics. Jennifer was featured 

in the June 2012 issue of “O The Oprah Magazine” and the 

Foundation received a donation of $2,500. Three months later, 

the Foundation was one of nine national charities selected 

by Wonder Bread as a winner of their “Share the Wonder” 

promotion, and was the recipient of a $10,000 donation. “It 

was the best feeling in the world to know that we could fi nally 

purchase the incubator,” said Jennifer.

dedication of this incubator culminates years of hard work and 

fundraising,” said Jennifer. “It was a way for us to thank the 

hospital that helped us.” 

The hospital immediately put the incubator to good use. A 

plaque identifi es it as the “Cohen incubator” and the nurses 

are quick to share the Cohen’s success story with parents in 

the NICU. “Incubators saved our daughters and we hope that 

every baby who is in this incubator will have the same wonderful 

outcome that our daughters have had,’ said Jennifer. “In that 

way, we will have made something good come from all that we 

have been through.” 

The Foundation has already started raising funds for a second 

machine. “We like to do things in twos,” joked Jennifer.

One of the most important 

skills a child can master is the art of 

effective communication. Developing a 

proficiency in writing and a love of the 

written word will serve your child well 

throughout his or her entire life. However, 

some children find expressing themselves 

through writing difficult or intimidating, 

especially if they are forced (as with a school 

assignment). Showing children that writing can be creative and 

fun will help reduce school anxiety and eliminate barriers to learning. 

Try one or all of these five activities with your child to make writing a 

more enjoyable activity. 

1. Story Starter Deck - Grab a stack of index cards and a pile of old 

magazines and have your child cut out any interesting pictures or phrases. 

Glue or tape each clipping to a card and shuffle the deck. Have your child 

choose one or more cards and use the pictures and words as inspiration for 

a short story. Buy a special journal or notebook for your child to write in 

and collect all of his or her stories. 

2. Ship’s Log - On ships, the captain keeps a daily record of what 

happens on the journey. Have your child keep a ship’s log of what happens 

each day. This activity is especially fun on family trips, but even the banal 

events of your child’s daily life will be fun to read about months and years 

from now. With some added photos or drawings, the completed ship’s log 

could make a wonderful gift or keepsake, too.

3. Greeting Cards - Make a list of any upcoming birthdays, events and 

holidays and set your child to work writing poems and designing greeting 

cards. Look up different poem styles for your child to try-shape poems, 

haikus, acrostics, diamantes or cinquains. Try checking out some children’s 

poetry collections from your library or spending an hour in the greeting 

card aisle at the grocery store to serve as inspiration. 

4. Letter to a Character - Have your child write a letter to his or her 

favorite character from a book or movie. Help your child brainstorm questions 

to ask the character, then ask your child to write a letter from the character 

answering the questions. This activity is a great opportunity to discuss the 

form and parts of a letter, as well as the correct way to address an envelope. 

5. What Happens Next? - Read a favorite story with your child 

(short picture books are ideal for this exercise) and then ask him or her 

to imagine and write down what happens next. Alternately, children can 

write “missing” scenes from books, or describe details that appear in the 

pictures, but not in the text. Older students might enjoy crafting stories about 

themselves interacting with their favorite characters. As a prompt, tell your 

child that his or her favorite character knocks on the door, and then ask, 

“What happens next?” 

Many young students find writing to be difficult, but as with any subject, 

the more they enjoy it, the easier it will become. Give your child opportunities 

to try a variety of writing activities that will help him or her practice and 

improve this skill-while having fun in the process.

New Pembroke Lakes Principal Is 

Already Making a Difference By Debby Teich 

For over 23 years, Sandra Shipman has been involved in education in the 

Broward County School District. This year, she returned to her hometown as principal 

of Pembroke Lakes Elementary School. “It is an honor and a privilege to serve 

as principal of such a high performing school,” said Shipman. “I am thrilled to be 

back in my home community of Pembroke Pines.” 

Before becoming principal at Pembroke Lakes, Shipman taught at the 

elementary and middle school levels. In 1998, she started an internship in 

administration at Silver Trail Middle and in 2000 she opened Falcon Cove Middle 

as assistant principal. In 2008, she joined the staff at Sunrise Middle as an intern 

principal and in May 2009 she became the school’s principal. Shipman says she is 

most proud of some of her accomplishments at Sunrise Middle, which is one of the 

most diverse schools in Broward County. She worked hard to unify the students 

and was able to boost the school’s ratings from a “B” to an “A” for three of the 

years she was there. 

When Shipman arrived at Pembroke Lakes, she was eager to draw on all of her 

experience to help make a great school even better. “The school has received an 

‘A’ rating for 10 years in a row,” said Shipman. “This would not have been possible 

without the entire community of faculty, staff, students, parents and partners 

working together. Their commitment, dedication and hard work provided the 

foundation for the academic excellence we have achieved. My goal is to maintain 

this high level of achievement and to continue to incorporate innovative programs

Who was Montessori? 

Maria Montessori was the fi rst woman to graduate as a medical doctor in the 

early 1900’s in Italy. She developed a scientifi c methodology to teach young children 

based on her extensive observations and research. 

Her philosophy supports the student’s innate curiosity and allows for freedom of 

choice and movement, encouraging independence and self-paced learning. Students 

develop critical thinking and problem solving skills by manipulating the Montessori 

materials and advancing at their own pace without limitations, competition, or 

judgment. Montessori has become the most utilized pedagogical method in the 

world. Its individualized instruction and the teachers’ profound respect for the 

student contributes to have Montessori as the selected and most preferred method 

of education, chosen by millions of parents around the globe. 

Intrinsic Motivation – Montessori students, while guided by the teacher, 

choose their own lessons. Children work for their own goals and motivation and not 

for external rewards. It is widely recognized that when there is high motivation, 

students engage and remain on task due to an inner guide that allows for 

concentration to fl ourish. Since it is not forced, the children understand and retain 

the concepts learned. 

The Classroom – The Montessori classroom is called “The Prepared 

Environment”. It is designed specifi cally to satisfy the learning style of every child. 

The materials develop order, concentration, coordination and independence. It is 

structured in such a way that children have the opportunity to explore, concentrate, 

discover, and learn while gaining a deep respect for the classroom community. 

Multi-Age Classes – Dr. Montessori noticed that younger students learn 

and activities that enhance the lives of our students.” 

The theme for this school year is “Going for the Gold” in the spirit of the Summer 

Olympics. “I want to make sure that the students understand they should never be 

complacent,” said Shipman. “To go from ordinary to extraordinary, they will always 

need to strive for more, just as the Olympic Gold Medal recipients did.” 

One of Shipman’s fi rst projects was to add extracurricular activities for the 

students. “I felt it was important to enhance the curriculum with programs that make 

learning fun,” said Shipman. Some of the programs now include Math Superstars, 

new reading programs, chorus, a math competition team, a technology team, an 

environmental club, and more. 

She has been working closely with the teachers to make sure they have what they need 

to keep the students challenged and engaged. “ I want to make certain that teachers have 

the latest resources and training to properly prepare our students,” said Shipman. “I have 

a fantastic staff and I want them to know that I am there for them.” 

Shipman has also worked hard to increase the level of volunteering and parental 

involvement. “The school-child-parent triangle is not complete without them,” she 

said. The school now has Parent University nights to help educate them on technology 

resources, FCAT’s, new national standards, curriculum and more. 

Shipman has only been at the school for a few months and she has already started 

to make a difference, along with the support of the school’s staff, parents and 

community partners. “It takes a village,” said Shipman.

skills. Montessori students are free to explore, experience and compare. 

They gather information and make decisions understanding the process rather than 

studyng for a test. This results in an individual who constantly seeks a higher order 

of learning using intrinsic motivation and creative thinking without fear of failure 

or making mistakes. On the contrary, mistakes are interpreted as experiences for 

the student to learn from, instead of considering it a setback. 

Education for Life – Many students begin their Montessori education in the 

preschool years. The concepts learned in the early years provide the foundation for 

the Elementary and Middle School levels. During the adolescent years, the concepts 

learned become essential. Montessori provides the students with the self-confi dence, 

responsibility and independence that they will need. Montessori students are 

assertive, organized, resourceful and caring individuals, thanks to the opportunities

SAGEMONT BASKETBALL TEAM 

PLAYS IN UNFORGETTABLE VENUE 

On September 26th, the Sagemont Boys Varsity Basketball Team set out on a journey 

and an experience that cannot be taught in the classroom. The team spent nine days 

traveling throughout Israel and participating in basketball games as part of the Maccabi 

Haifa Educational Exchange Program. The goal of the trip was to expose the students 

to the cultural and historical relevance of Israel. 

The trip was the brainchild of Dr. Richard Goldman, co-founder of The Sagemont School. 

“Having lived in Israel, I was aware that youth sports are run by community groups and not 

by the high schools. I contacted Maccabi Haifa Youth Sports Organization and we discussed 

the idea of having Sagemont students develop cross cultural experiences with Israeli students. 

Sports have a history of bringing together diverse cultures.” Sagemont’s basketball team is 

made up of ten Christians, two Muslims and two Jews. Throughout their travels, the students 

were able to learn about the three different religions. “Before this trip, what I knew of Israel 

was only from textbooks and the Internet. Now I see how so many religions from around the 

world can be tied to the history of one small country,” said sophomore Adam Jurko. 

The students traveled in Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv visiting places such as Yad 

Vashem-Holocaust Museum, Nazareth, Sea of Galilee, the Western Wall and Baha’i 

Gardens. They also climbed Masada, a huge desert fortress that overlooks the Dead 

Sea. In between sightseeing and learning about the Israeli culture, they had basketball 

practice and played in three games. “The teams we played were some of the top teams 

in Israel. All three games were very competitive. Getting used to the European rules was 

a challenge and all of us were learning on the fl y” said Jurko. Coach Adam Ross added, 

“This was more than a basketball trip. Our kids came away from this experience with 

something positive that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.” 

The student travelers were required to take pictures and keep a journal to chronicle 

what they learned. They shared these journals with their classmates upon their return. 

Junior Joe Kirby said, “After only being in Israel for one day, you could feel how much 

history was there and how proud the people there were of their country.” Jurko added, 

“Israel was even more beautiful than the pictures we saw before the trip. Every day I 

was so excited to experience the culture and history.” 

Each student came away from this trip with a better understanding of Israel, its culture 

and its signifi cance to the rest of the world. Jordan Cooper, 11th grade, said of his 

experience, “It humbled me. I realize it’s not every day that a high school gets to travel 

out of the country. It puts everything in perspective when you see kids your age serving 

in the army and you realize just how different Israeli culture is. Dr. Brent Goldman, 

President of The Sagemont School said, “This trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity 

for our students. We are extremely grateful to Haifa Maccabi and the Jewish Federation 

of Broward County for making this trip possible.” Next year Israel Maccabi students will 

visit Florida and Sagemont for a similar cultural exchange experience.

The students, parents, faculty and staff at Lakeside 

Elementary School are “bucket-fi llers.” We all carry an invisible 

bucket in which we keep our positive feelings about ourselves. 

When our bucket is full, we are happy; when our bucket is 

empty, we are sad. 

The children read a book about how they can fi ll each 

other’s bucket by loving, helping, and being a friend. It also 

taught the children how to prevent bucket dipping which is 

caused by actions that hurt others. This program is a part of 

our anti-bullying campaign and is the message that we want to 

share this year at Lakeside Elementary. Teachers and students 

are encouraged to recognize other students and teachers who are 

bucket-fi llers. Each class has their own bucket and teachers fi ll 

the buckets with positive things the students are doing. Students 

are recognized as “bucket-fi llers” on morning announcements.

To kick off this year’s theme, staff members wore a teal shirt 

with the slogan, We Are Bucket-Fillers! You Can Be Too! On 

Early Release Days, the entire staff wears their shirts to encourage

Our students made their parents eco-friendly buckets to take 

home as their family bucket. At our open house parents also 

received a thank you note to place in their buckets as a token 

of gratitude for attending their child’s open house.

A “Special” Evening 

at Pines Lakes 

Elementary School 

Pines Lakes Elementary School hosted a very “Special” evening on December 12, 2012 

when they held their annual Book Fair Night in their new Media Center. 

“Our Media Specialist, Ms. Pitaluga, promotes literacy, celebrates reading and takes pride 

in exposing students to multiple sources of digital media every school day,” said Assistant 

Principal Cormic Priester. This year, Ms. Pitaluga coordinated the annual Book Fair and 

planned an evening visitation for parents and community members to attend, browse and 

purchase items. A variety of books and other specialty items were available for purchase 

and a percentage of Book Fair proceeds were donated to the school. 

In addition to the evening Book Fair event, the special area teachers showcased the 

dynamic instructional curriculum delivered through Art, Music and Physical Education 

presentations. “Special arts are an integral part of the curriculum, because students are 

able to express themselves while continuing to learn and apply key components of the 

overall academic curriculum,” said principal Dr. Joanne Nitti. 

“Our music teacher, Mrs. Antmann, is a 21st century music teacher who utilizes the 

latest technology, encourages students to express their creative talents, while reinforcing 

core curriculum through music instruction,” said Dr. Nitti. Mrs. Antmann’s Kindergarten 

students took the audience on a musical adventure. Each musical selection reinforced basic 

reading and language arts skills. 

Long gone are the art classes of the past. Art teacher, Mrs. Wixted, engages students daily 

in multiple types of visual art projects. “Currently, students are learning creative painting 

techniques such as Japanese Sumie painting and are incorporating literature related to 

Japanese culture and traditions within their art projects,” said Mrs. Wixted. Gyotaku, an 

old Japanese Printmaking

Saranik, Pines Lakes Elementary Physical Education teacher, presented activities students 

experience in his class on a daily basis. Select students demonstrated a game that teaches 

students how to strategize and respond to cues. 

Families, friends and community members attended the Book Fair and learned about 

the “Special” happenings taking place at Pines Lakes Elementary School. They enjoyed 

the activities and student demonstrations throughout the exciting evening that was a true 

display of “Panther Pride”.
