4-H awards ceremony held 

4-H members, parents, and guests 

attended the 2012 4-H Roun-Da-Vu 

(awards ceremony) held on Nov. 4 

at the Expo Center in Rockwell City. 

The Calhoun County Hot Shots, 

Center Trail Blazers, Center Willing 

Workers, and Logan Larks 4-H 

Clubs were the hosts for the event 

that began at 2 p.m. The awards 

ceremony started with reciting the 

Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call for 

the Calhoun County 4-H clubs was 

conducted with the Cedar Reading 

Rockers 4-H Club having the 

highest percentage of their members 

in attendance and they were awarded 

the traveling trophy. 

4-H activity reports were given 

on the State 4-H Camping Center 

by Jacob Nicholson and Lauren 

Ukena, Junior Camp by Kaylynn 

Kruckenberg, Robotics Activities by 

Chase Pibal and Jacy McAlexander, 

Intermediate Trip by Heidi 

Hammen, the State 4-H Conference 

by Brett Nicholson, and Citizenship 

Washington Focus trip by Jordan 

Ukena. 

All leaders for 2011-2012 and 

2012-2013 were given an ISU 

Extension and Outreach lawn chair 

as a token of appreciation from the 

County Council. 

The Friends of 4-H Award this 

year was awarded to Farm Bureau 

for their generosity and continuous 

support of the 4-H program. 

Members of the 2012-2013 4-H 

County Council were installed.

a $100 savings bond to the Top 

4-H’er in each age division. This 

year’s Top Junior 4-H member 

was Chase Pibal, son of Brian and 

Sara Pibal from Lytton. The Top 

Intermediate 4-H member was 

Becca Krueger, daughter of Mitch 

and Kari Krueger from Manson. 

The Top Senior 4-H member was

6th as Election Day - a time to 

get out and vote, but it was also a 

great opportunity to support a local 

business. 

The Shady Oaks Care Center 

team, along with fellow Kid’s Spot 

Board and community members, 

collaborated to raise funds for The 

Kid’s Spot childcare center in Lake 

City. Through much planning and 

hard work, a fundraiser consisting 

of a maid-rite meal, bake sale, and 

silent auction was held. Many 

generous donations were given from 

both local and out of town businesses 

and patrons. 

Special thanks to Jennifer Blair 

from Shady Oaks for the fundraising 

idea and for leading the efforts, as 

well as to Jennifer Snyder from 

Stewart Memorial for organizing the 

bake sale with the SMCH Auxiliary. 

Matching donations from Vetter 

Health Services (parent company 

of Shady Oaks Care Center) in the 

amount of $1000 and from Thrivent 

Financial for Lutherans in the in 

amount of $250 supported the cause. 

Due to the generosity of so many 

we were able to net over $4000 to 

present to The Kid’s Spot. 

The money will be used for 

general expenses in striving to keep 

daycare rates competitive.

The Calhoun County Community 

Foundation (CCCF) will hold two 

grant-writing workshops mandatory 

for those interested in applying for a 

2013 grant. The workshops will be 

held on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. 

and Saturday, Jan. 5 at 10 .m. 

Both workshops will be held 

at the Rockwell City Community 

Center/Library. 

A representative from the applying 

organization must attend one of the 

grant-writing workshops in order to 

be eligible to receive a grant. 

The 2013 application will be 

available to those attending the Dec. 

6 workshop. An electronic version of 

the application will also be available 

by Dec. 1

painting the windows, as you can see 

when you drive by. There are a LOT 

of windows, as you can see when 

you drive by, so it takes a while. 

The men have been working very 

hard getting the Hammond Log 

Cabin ready to move up here. It was

all of them. 

Bonnie DeBolt reported on the 

Flea Market. It did very well and 

made more than they did last time.

their hard work and it takes a LOT

Rockwell City 2012 Holiday Celebration great success

Chamber of Commerce director 

The 2012 Holiday Celebration 

was a lovely evening of fun, food 

and fellowship. My sincere thanks 

to all who attend and to the many 

volunteers that made this evening 

possible. 

Santa (aka Paul Boyce) was the 

highlight of the evening for kids and 

adults alike. His elves, Jona Grodahl 

and Hailey Burley helped to round 

out the holiday theme. I hope that 

Jessica Henry was able to snap that 

perfect Santa photo for kids and 

parents and we appreciate Jessica’s 

participation in the event. Another 

big highlight of the evening was the 

UBI Trolley Rides courtesy of The 

Bob Roby Family and UBI Team. It 

was a perfect night for a ride around 

town to admire the pretty lights. 

The Community Center was 

festive in décor thanks to Stephanie 

Wheeler and her daughter and 

the smells of the wonderful chili 

(homemade by Lowell Stoolman) 

and cheese soup filled the air. 

Rockwell City is very fortunate 

to have great volunteerism in their 

Rockwell City Rotary Club and 

from the Logan Larks 4H Club. The 

Rotarians served the food and drinks 

and manned the clean up detail. 

Their support makes any job easier. 

The 4H members helped out by 

supplying the sweet treats, helping 

with the serving, and cleaning up 

tables. Service in our youth is so 

vital and we are blessed to have these 

young people in our community. 

Community Spirit was a live 

Sunday night at the Community 

Center and it was very nice to have 

a number of our local businesses 

and individuals host vendor tables. 

We are reminded of the importance 

to shop local this holiday season 

as in every season to keep our 

business community thriving. 

Many businesses added to the 

festivities with gifts for the Holiday 

Celebration door prizes. We thank 

them for their generosity. Misty 

Rastetter coordinated the gifts for 

the event and I appreciate her efforts 

in that project. 

The Chamber showcased their 

newest project – a print of the 

Rockwell City Square which features 

the Calhoun County Courthouse, 

Carnegie Library and the Bandstand. 

The winter scene is lovely and this 

is a piece of artwork that would 

hang nicely in any home. Chamber 

members will be taking orders for 

the prints in the next few weeks so 

watch for more information. 

Our next event for Chamber 

Members is the Annual Rockwell 

City Chamber & Development 

Meeting on Sunday, January 13 at 

6:30 pm in the First Community Bank 

Basement. All Chamber members 

– current and new – are invited 

to attend. The Fire Department is 

hosting their monthly soup supper 

that evening so we encourage 

chamber members to have soup at 

the Fire House prior to attending the 

Chamber meeting.

Someone shared the following 

story. Thanksgiving was 

approaching and the family had 

received a card with a painting of 

a Pilgrim family on their way to 

church. Grandma showed the card to 

her small grandchildren, observing: 

“The Pilgrim children liked to go 

to church with their mothers and 

fathers.” “Oh yeah?” her young 

grandson replied. “So why is their 

dad carrying that rifle?” 

Many of us are thankful that 

Sunnyview is all on one level. 

No stair steps here, except to 

the basement. And the coffee is 

always on. Perhaps a piece of warm 

pumpkin pie would go well with that 

coffee. There is a lot of nutrition in a 

pumpkin. Roasted pumpkin seeds are 

good, too, and don’t forget pumpkin 

bread. Say, what do you use to fix a 

broken pumpkin? A pumpkin patch. 

By the time this is in the paper, 

Sunnyview may be in a state of 

transformation. Sunnyview has the 

tradition of decking the halls right 

after Thanksgiving. Dee Harman, 

staff supervisor, does a great job 

organizing the decorations with all 

of her helpers. Ready or not, here 

comes Christmas! Seventy-one years 

ago, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was 

attacked, bringing the United States 

into World War II. Let’s remember 

our brave men and women in the 

armed forces. 

Liz Guess were in Ankeny Saturday 

Nov. 17th for a vendors fair to 

benefit the March of Dimes. Liz’s 

nephew and his wife are parents of 

two-year old triplet girls who arrived 

prematurely and received help from 

the March of Dimes. It was held on 

the campus of DMACC. 

Vernon and Shirley Hamilton 

visited Don and Kay Munson of 

Storm Lake on the 13 th . Others 

there were Lanice Goetsch of West 

Des Moines and her sister Lynnette 

Dultma from Michigan.

Kalyn Anderson Named 3 rd Quarter MVV 

Kalyn Anderson was named the 

3 rd Quarter of 2012 MVV winner 

recently. This award is presented to 

an employee who exemplifies our 

Mission, Vision, and Values on a 

consistent basis as well as displays 

a “Yes, I Can” attitude. Kalyn has 

been a Certified Nursing Assistant 

at Shady Oaks for 13 years. Terri 

Johnson is the primary nurse that 

works with Kalyn and she stated,

residents and families. I appreciate

Titan junior varsity girls win first game 

The South Central Calhoun junior 

varsity girls basketball team opened 

the 2012-2013 campaign playing 

at home versus Storm Lake High 

School on Tuesday, November 20 

with a convincing 51-21 victory 

over the Tornadoes. 

The Titans were paced by some 

very balanced scoring with Jadyn 

Khommanyvong leading the way 

with 12 points. She was followed

ISU Women in Science and Engineering Outreach engaged young girls in fun and educational

AAUW hosts outreach program 

On Thursday evening, Nov. 15, at the community 

center in Rockwell City, several girls in grades 4 

through 6 participated in science and engineering 

based activities conducted by four female students 

from Iowa State University, while Carol Heaverlo, 

Ph. D., Outreach Program Coordinator at Iowa State 

University, gave a presentation to the girls’ parents in 

another room. 

The evening was part of ISU’s Women in Science 

and Engineering Outreach, which encourages girls to 

pursue interests in career fields that have traditionally 

been dominated by men. 

The ISU student role models - Mary Krull, Sadie 

Winter, Olivia Janusz and Alicia O’Donnell, conducted 

fun and educational activities including egg bungie 

jump and magnetic pickup. 

The American Association of University Women 

hosted the event and served refreshments. 

Rain Barrel Decorating Contest 

A Rain Barrel is any type of container used to catch water flowing from a downspout. Rain Barrels reduce the amount 

of stormwater runoff by collecting roof runoff and storing the rainwater for future use. The Calhoun County Soil 

and Water Conservation District (SWCD). Commissioners are promoting and selling Rain Barrels. Barrels can be 

purchased by calling the SWCD office at 712-297-7824. The Commissioners recently held a Rain Barrel Decorating

South Central Calhoun MS boys’ team works hard 

On Nov. 19, the South Central 

Calhoun 7th & 8th grade boys 

basketball squads hosted Newell- 

Fonda. 

The 7th grade boys faced a tough 

full court press and Titan turnovers 

led to a 43-17 loss to the mustangs. 

Blake Pagel led the charges with 8 

pts. Hunter Mulhbauer and Tyler 

Jones both had 4 pts a piece. 

The Titan 8th grade boys came out 

and took charge from the start. A 

stellar full court press and balanced 

scoring resulted in a 61-27 titan win. 

Brenden Henklemen led all scorers 

with 18 pts. Lucas Otto had 12 pts, 

Jonas Otto 9 pts, Andrew Gray had 

8 pts, Tyler O’Tool with 5 pts, Kody 

Case 4 pts, Matt Toms with 3 pts and 

Cody Schumacher had 2. Alexander 

Campbell had some quality 

minutes on the floor as well. Coach 

Williamson commented, “Probably 

the most balanced game we’ve had 

to date. Kids continue to improve 

which is no. 1 key.” 

On Nov. 20 the SCC 7th & 8th grade 

“B” squads hosted SE Webster/ 

Grand in Lake City. 

The 7th grade lost by a score of 38- 

20. Leading the way in scoring for 

the Titans was Jerad Campbell and 

Colton Morenz, both with 6 pts. Joey 

Schrage had 12 rebounds, 3 blocks 

and 2 pts. 

The 8th grade came out strong early 

but cold shooting and turnovers led 

to a 37-15 defeat. The Titans led at 

one point in the second quarter 8-6. 

Seeing quality time for the titans 

include Cody Smith, Justin Dick, 

Micah Lantz, Ashton Halversen, 

Wyatt Kruse, Tanner Campbell, 

Alexander Campbell, Brandon 

Assman, Ben Wozniak and Cade 

Carstens. 

Coach Williamson commented, 

“It’s been a long stretch for these 

kids. So many games and only one 

practice in last two plus weeks.
