4-H awards ceremony held<br />

4-H members, parents, and guests<br />

attended the 2012 4-H Roun-Da-Vu<br />

(awards ceremony) held on Nov. 4<br />

at the Expo Center in Rockwell City.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Calhoun County Hot Shots,<br />

Center Trail Blazers, Center Willing<br />

Workers, and Logan Larks 4-H<br />

Clubs were the hosts for the event<br />

that began at 2 p.m. <strong>The</strong> awards<br />

ceremony started with reciting the<br />

Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call for<br />

the Calhoun County 4-H clubs was<br />

conducted with the Cedar Reading<br />

Rockers 4-H Club having the<br />

highest percentage of their members<br />

in attendance and they were awarded<br />

the traveling trophy.<br />

4-H activity reports were given<br />

on the State 4-H Camping Center<br />

by Jacob Nicholson and Lauren<br />

Ukena, Junior Camp by Kaylynn<br />

Kruckenberg, Robotics Activities by<br />

Chase Pibal and Jacy McAlexander,<br />

Intermediate Trip by Heidi<br />

Hammen, the State 4-H Conference<br />

by Brett Nicholson, and Citizenship<br />

Washington Focus trip by Jordan<br />

Ukena.<br />

All leaders for 2011-2012 and<br />

2012-2013 were given an ISU<br />

Extension and Outreach lawn chair<br />

as a token of appreciation from the<br />

County Council.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Friends of 4-H Award this<br />

year was awarded to Farm Bureau<br />

for their generosity and continuous<br />

support of the 4-H program.<br />

Members of the 2012-2013 4-H<br />

County Council were installed.<br />

Intermediate 4-H member was<br />

Becca Krueger, daughter of Mitch<br />

great opportunity to support a local<br />

<strong>The</strong> Shady Oaks Care Center<br />

team, along with fellow Kid’s Spot<br />

Board and community members,<br />

collaborated to raise funds for <strong>The</strong><br />

Kid’s Spot childcare center in Lake<br />

City. Through much planning and<br />

hard work, a fundraiser consisting<br />

of a maid-rite meal, bake sale, and<br />

silent auction was held. Many<br />

generous donations were given from<br />

both local and out of town businesses<br />

and patrons.<br />

from Shady Oaks for the fundraising<br />

idea and for leading the efforts, as<br />

well as to Jennifer Snyder from<br />

Stewart Memorial for organizing the<br />

bake sale with the SMCH Auxiliary.<br />

of Shady Oaks Care Center) in the<br />

amount of $1000 and from Thrivent<br />

Financial for Lutherans in the in<br />

amount of $250 supported the cause.<br />

we were able to net over $4000 to<br />

present to <strong>The</strong> Kid’s Spot.<br />

<strong>The</strong> money will be used for<br />

general expenses in striving to keep<br />

grant-writing workshops mandatory<br />

for those interested in applying for a<br />

2013 grant. <strong>The</strong> workshops will be<br />

held on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.<br />

and Saturday, Jan. 5 at 10 .m.<br />

at the Rockwell City Community<br />

Sept. 18. <strong>The</strong>re were nine members<br />

present.<br />

the meeting to order, the minutes<br />

were read and the treasurer’s report<br />

was explained. Bot were accepted.<br />

Old business: Uyntha Duncan has<br />

come several times to work on new<br />

cards for the exhibits. <strong>The</strong>y look<br />

very nice. JoAnne Maguire and<br />

Aileen Maguire have helped her.<br />

Jim Casey and crew have been<br />

painting the windows, as you can see<br />

when you drive by. <strong>The</strong>re are a LOT<br />

of windows, as you can see when<br />

you drive by, so it takes a while.<br />

<strong>The</strong> men have been working very<br />

hard getting the Hammond Log<br />

Cabin ready to move up here. It was<br />

and still is a lot of work, so we thank<br />

all of them.<br />

Flea Market. It did very well and<br />

made more than they did last time.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 2012 Holiday Celebration<br />

was a lovely evening of fun, food<br />

and fellowship. My sincere thanks<br />

to all who attend and to the many<br />

volunteers that made this evening<br />

possible.<br />

Santa (aka Paul Boyce) was the<br />

highlight of the evening for kids and<br />

adults alike. His elves, Jona Grodahl<br />

and Hailey Burley helped to round<br />

out the holiday theme. I hope that<br />

Jessica Henry was able to snap that<br />

perfect Santa photo for kids and<br />

participation in the event. Another<br />

big highlight of the evening was the<br />

UBI Trolley Rides courtesy of <strong>The</strong><br />

Bob Roby Family and UBI Team. It<br />

was a perfect night for a ride around<br />

town to admire the pretty lights.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Community Center was<br />

festive in décor thanks to Stephanie<br />

Wheeler and her daughter and<br />

the smells of the wonderful chili<br />

(homemade by Lowell Stoolman)<br />

and cheese soup filled the air.<br />

Rockwell City is very fortunate<br />

to have great volunteerism in their<br />

Rockwell City Rotary Club and<br />

from the Logan Larks 4H Club. <strong>The</strong><br />

Rotarians served the food and drinks<br />

and manned the clean up detail.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir support makes any job easier.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 4H members helped out by<br />

supplying the sweet treats, helping<br />

with the serving, and cleaning up<br />

tables. Service in our youth is so<br />

vital and we are blessed to have these<br />

young people in our community.<br />

Community Spirit was a live<br />

Sunday night at the Community<br />

Center and it was very nice to have<br />

a number of our local businesses<br />

and individuals host vendor tables.<br />

We are reminded of the importance<br />

to shop local this holiday season<br />

as in every season to keep our<br />

business community thriving.<br />

Many businesses added to the<br />

festivities with gifts for the Holiday<br />

Celebration door prizes. We thank<br />

them for their generosity. Misty<br />

Rastetter coordinated the gifts for<br />

the event and I appreciate her efforts<br />

in that project.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Chamber showcased their<br />

newest project – a print of the<br />

Rockwell City Square which features<br />

the Calhoun County Courthouse,<br />

Carnegie Library and the Bandstand.<br />

<strong>The</strong> winter scene is lovely and this<br />

is a piece of artwork that would<br />

hang nicely in any home. Chamber<br />

members will be taking orders for<br />

the prints in the next few weeks so<br />

watch for more information.<br />

City Chamber & Development<br />

Meeting on Sunday, January 13 at<br />

6:30 pm in the First Community Bank<br />

Basement. All Chamber members<br />

hosting their monthly soup supper<br />

that evening so we encourage<br />

chamber members to have soup at<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sunnyview staff and spouses<br />

gathered Friday night, Nov. 16 th,<br />

at the Pizza Ranch for a “pre-<br />

Thanksgiving” meal together. From<br />

the sound of all the joking that went<br />

on, it would be safe to say that “a<br />

good time was had by all.”<br />

How was your Thanksgiving? Did<br />

you think of things for which you<br />

could be thankful, and did you enjoy<br />

one of those Thanksgiving blessings:<br />

left-overs? <strong>The</strong> weather can be a big<br />

factor in holiday travel. Sometimes<br />

the best choice is to stay home. <strong>The</strong><br />

Sunnyview staff regularly expects<br />

many guests and residents here for a<br />

sumptuous Thanksgiving meal.<br />

We feel for those who have lost<br />

loved ones. That would include the<br />

tragic loss of four lives in the recent<br />

Lake City house fire. It’s hard to<br />

know what to say, other than we are<br />

sorry.<br />

<strong>The</strong> photos from the hurricane<br />

devastation on the east coast are<br />

sobering. However, we might<br />

wonder which photos are real. For<br />

instance, we saw online photos of<br />

sharks swimming in the flooded New<br />

York subways. If you are curious<br />

Someone shared the following<br />

story. Thanksgiving was<br />

approaching and the family had<br />

received a card with a painting of<br />

a Pilgrim family on their way to<br />

church. Grandma showed the card to<br />

her small grandchildren, observing:<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Pilgrim children liked to go<br />

to church with their mothers and<br />

fathers.” “Oh yeah?” her young<br />

grandson replied. “So why is their<br />

dad carrying that rifle?”<br />

Many of us are thankful that<br />

Sunnyview is all on one level.<br />

No stair steps here, except to<br />

the basement. And the coffee is<br />

always on. Perhaps a piece of warm<br />

pumpkin pie would go well with that<br />

coffee. <strong>The</strong>re is a lot of nutrition in a<br />

pumpkin. Roasted pumpkin seeds are<br />

good, too, and don’t forget pumpkin<br />

bread. Say, what do you use to fix a<br />

broken pumpkin? A pumpkin patch.<br />

By the time this is in the paper,<br />

Sunnyview may be in a state of<br />

transformation. Sunnyview has the<br />

tradition of decking the halls right<br />

after Thanksgiving. Dee Harman,<br />

staff supervisor, does a great job<br />

organizing the decorations with all<br />

of her helpers. Ready or not, here<br />

comes Christmas! Seventy-one years<br />

ago, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was<br />

attacked, bringing the United States<br />

into World War II. Let’s remember<br />

our brave men and women in the<br />

armed forces.<br />

Liz Guess were in Ankeny Saturday<br />

Nov. 17th for a vendors fair to<br />

benefit the March of Dimes. Liz’s<br />

nephew and his wife are parents of<br />

two-year old triplet girls who arrived<br />

prematurely and received help from<br />

the March of Dimes. It was held on<br />

the campus of DMACC.<br />

visited Don and Kay Munson of<br />

Storm Lake on the 13 th . Others<br />

there were Lanice Goetsch of West<br />

Titan junior varsity girls win first game<br />

<strong>The</strong> South Central Calhoun junior<br />

varsity girls basketball team opened<br />

the 2012-2013 campaign playing<br />

at home versus Storm Lake High<br />

School on Tuesday, November 20<br />

with a convincing 51-21 victory<br />

over the Tornadoes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Titans were paced by some<br />

very balanced scoring with Jadyn<br />

Khommanyvong leading the way<br />

with 12 points. She was followed<br />

<strong>The</strong> 7th grade girls basketball<br />

team started their season off with a<br />

home victory over Storm Lake St.<br />

Mary’s. <strong>The</strong> final score was 25-22.<br />

AAUW hosts outreach program<br />

On Thursday evening, Nov. 15, at the community<br />

center in Rockwell City, several girls in grades 4<br />

through 6 participated in science and engineering<br />

based activities conducted by four female students<br />

from Iowa State University, while Carol Heaverlo,<br />

Ph. D., Outreach Program Coordinator at Iowa State<br />

University, gave a presentation to the girls’ parents in<br />

another room.<br />

<strong>The</strong> evening was part of ISU’s Women in Science<br />

and Engineering Outreach, which encourages girls to<br />

pursue interests in career fields that have traditionally<br />

been dominated by men.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ISU student role models - Mary Krull, Sadie<br />

Winter, Olivia Janusz and Alicia O’Donnell, conducted<br />

fun and educational activities including egg bungie<br />

jump and magnetic pickup.<br />

<strong>The</strong> American Association of University Women<br />

hosted the event and served refreshments.<br />

Rain Barrel Decorating Contest<br />

A Rain Barrel is any type of container used to catch water flowing from a downspout. Rain Barrels reduce the amount<br />

of stormwater runoff by collecting roof runoff and storing the rainwater for future use. <strong>The</strong> Calhoun County Soil<br />

and Water Conservation District (SWCD). Commissioners are promoting and selling Rain Barrels. Barrels can be<br />

purchased by calling the SWCD office at 712-297-7824. <strong>The</strong> Commissioners recently held a Rain Barrel Decorating<br />

Contest with the 4-H clubs in Calhoun County. Pictured are the decorated Barrels. <strong>The</strong> following 4-H’ers were<br />

South Central Calhoun MS boys’ team works hard<br />

On Nov. 19, the South Central<br />

Calhoun 7th & 8th grade boys<br />

basketball squads hosted Newell-<br />

Fonda.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 7th grade boys faced a tough<br />

full court press and Titan turnovers<br />

led to a 43-17 loss to the mustangs.<br />

Blake Pagel led the charges with 8<br />

pts. Hunter Mulhbauer and Tyler<br />

Jones both had 4 pts a piece.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Titan 8th grade boys came out<br />

and took charge from the start. A<br />

stellar full court press and balanced<br />

scoring resulted in a 61-27 titan win.<br />

Brenden Henklemen led all scorers<br />

with 18 pts. Lucas Otto had 12 pts,<br />

Jonas Otto 9 pts, Andrew Gray had<br />

8 pts, Tyler O’Tool with 5 pts, Kody<br />

Case 4 pts, Matt Toms with 3 pts and<br />

Cody Schumacher had 2. Alexander<br />

Campbell had some quality<br />

minutes on the floor as well. Coach<br />

Williamson commented, “Probably<br />

the most balanced game we’ve had<br />

to date. Kids continue to improve<br />

which is no. 1 key.”<br />

On Nov. 20 the SCC 7th & 8th grade<br />

“B” squads hosted SE Webster/<br />

Grand in Lake City.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 7th grade lost by a score of 38-<br />

20. Leading the way in scoring for<br />

the Titans was Jerad Campbell and<br />

Colton Morenz, both with 6 pts. Joey<br />

Schrage had 12 rebounds, 3 blocks<br />

and 2 pts.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 8th grade came out strong early<br />

but cold shooting and turnovers led<br />

to a 37-15 defeat. <strong>The</strong> Titans led at<br />

one point in the second quarter 8-6.<br />
