The vertical configuration (option 2) was chosen for structural simplicity, fairing requirement<br />

and the passage MAV/SHM requirement.<br />

In Figure 4-3 the whole vehicle is shown. The overall dimensions are presented in Figure 3-5.<br />

The SHM and MAV are contained in a heat- and a back-shield. Those elements, part of the<br />

Descent Module, are jettisoned after entry in the atmosphere of Mars. Other parts of the DM are<br />

the landing legs and the retrorockets; those parts are attached to the SHM.
