WEEKEND
WORKSHOP
By G.Barry Ellis
.Man's desire to satisfy needs arid overcome problem
situations has caused him to be ingenious.
, Necessity is the mother of invention and clamps are no
exception. There exists a truly amazing variety of clamps.
Every hobbyist regardless of specialty has seen and used
the common C-cIamp.
As common as they may seem, there are quite a few different
grades. The cast iron clamps are best. The body is
strong and the screws usually heavy. •
The cast aluminum clamp (when painted, they appear
the same as iron clamps) are much lighter and have less
pressure capability. Aluminum clamps also wear in the
area that the iron thread goes through the body.
The last quality of clamp is the stamped steel body.
While they are inexpensive, the jaw faces are not flat and
they mark material badly during clamping. I suggest using
small protective blocks when using these clamps.
Keep your eyes open to locate used C-clamps at garage
sales, 2nd hand stores and auctions and don't worry about
a little rust.
If a swivel jaw or handle is missing and the clamp is a
name brand (Stanley, Jorgenson, Cinncinati, Wilton or
Craftsman) you could write to the manufacturer for an inexpensive
replacement part.
Another popular consumer clamp is the pipe clamp — so
named because the body of the clamp is made out of gas or
water pipe. These clamps are popular because one can
make any size clamp needed by using the desired length of
pipe.
Years ago, woodworkers used bar clamps which had
either hardwood or steel beams for the body. Alas! The
price of this type of clamp now-a-days would shock the
most aware consumer. Pipe clamps are available almost
outlets for between $4.00 (small and low quality) to $10.00
(large and good quality).
The web clamp is an industrial favorite. The web or •
cloth tape of the clamp is wrapped around the object being
assembled. The device cinches up the slack on the web,
thus applying equal pressure to all sides of the project being
clamped.
A consumer version of this clamp is available locally.
One common example of a difficult problem solved by the
use of a web clamp is gluing together circular objects such
as bongo drums, wooden tubs or wood turnings.
Some bar clamps, which are now common, come in a
range of qualities from inexpensive, light duty to industrial
quality. Their major advantage is ease of use. The jaw may
be quickly slid to the closed position with the pressure being
applied by turning the screw.
We are all familiar with the famous vice-grip plier which
can be used for many metal clamping operations. A new
clamp on the market replaces the teeth of the vise-grip with
two arms onto which is fastened the normal swivel clamp,
face. This tool is like having an extra hand; it does not
have to be adjusted between thick and thin materials.
Another relatively new tool on the market is the spring
clamp. This tool is similar to the "Bull Dog" stationery
clip but with a much heavier spring and it has plastic tips to
prevent marring the wood. Another spring clamp requires
a special pair of pliers to apply the unit. Shop around to
see the new tools.
The old hand book-binding press rriakes a great veneer
press. This clamping device will do large surface joints.
The only clamp that has been in use for centuries is the
wooden parallel jaw, sometimes referred to as the hand
screw. This wooden jaw clamp is rather expensive but is
capable of doing some interesting clamping jobs.
Not many antique versions of this clamp survive as the
wooden screw splits off due to the pressure applied to it.
The machinists version of this clamp is a tiny steel-jawed
layout clamp. Both are excellent for the home shop.
Have you ever wondered what to put on your next year's
Christmas Wish list? Ask for a pair of clamps. I have
found that clamps are most useful in pairs and I never
seem to have too many. ' {•:
Owners of large
downtown areas of potential
flea market property,
however, must extract their
thirty pieces of silver, and
maybe if you don't happen
to sell that much it can turn
into a lot of trouble for very
little return.
Hence, the birth of the
garage sale.
It's perfect. No
overhead, very little work.
All you need is a garage,
carport or an amused basement
room, let the stuff pile
up, put an ad in the paper
and you're open for
business.
One Saturday morning
recently, I decided to look
into the aforementioned activity
and armed with a list
of addresses gleaned-from
the local news media, I
started out.
I tell you I haven't had so
much fun in a long while.
The first place I went to I
met a friend. .We teamed up
and visited all the places on
my list and then ended up
happily discussing our
bargain store purchases
over a cup of coffee in a
nearby cafe. a
At the home of Wanda
Tutt, she and her girl friend
Norma MacDonald had
called it a tent sale.
"Well, if you just happen
to have a couple of good
tents for sale, why not,"
said Wanda.
"Come and shop under
the big top, was Norma's
idea. My husband and I got
transferred and we had all
this stuff we were not using.
We moved to Quesnel two.
years ago and as you move
around you seem to collect
more and more. This is the
first one we've ever had.
I've never been to one
myself. We got a lot of
phone calls. They sure seem
to be popular."
She picked up an assortment
of neatly-pressed
•
V...
jeans and slacks and moved
them around on a table with
some other clothing.
"It's a bit difficult," she
went on.
"You don't quite know
what to charge.. We just
figure; well, what would we
' pay for it, and charge accordingly.
You don't want
to give it away and you
don't want to overcharge.
If somebody wants to make
an offer, well fine, we're
open to offers."
She grinned and added<
"Anyway I'd hate to pack it
all up again."
In the fine Saturday morning
drizzle, the tents were
keeping things dry, things
like handy kitchen oddments
and flatware and a
clarinet nestling in its velvet
case. There were some
good-looking suitcases and
a few kittens in a box.
Norma was busy marking
up the sales. /
"I had a few things but
not enough for a sale," she
spoke quickly, "so we got
together. It's fun. A lot of
people have been coming.
Advertising is important
and getting organized. I
noticed some collectors got
here early. I guess if you
want the best you have to
get out early."
In a basement suite, the
Dykstras were all packed up
and ready to leave for
Alberta.
"We are selling
everything we can't- move
by bus," said Dykstra.
"It's just too expensive
to move furniture across the
country. What we figure
we'll do when we get there
is go to a garage, sale and
pick up some more furniture
again. Most of our
stuff was sold Friday. You
would be surprised at the
number of people who
s.how up."
There were some baby
items and various kinds of
potted plants resting on the
window sills. On the floor
there were some boots and
shoes, a few framed pictures
and a wheat grinder he
was willing to sell for fifty
dollars.
Some folks leave the kids
to mind the store -oops!
sorry I meant garage.
- We found a house in the '
Uplands with two young,
teens in charge. Well, I
guess it'does keep them occupied
and gives them some
petty cash, too.
Pat Reichert has had
three sales in a period of a
year and a half. .
"I'm a collector," she
said. "I love antiques. My
family collected them and
I've inherited their liking
for old things." • .
Among Reichert's old
things was a picture print
approximately 36 by 24 in
ches wide, its caption depicting
"The Relief of
Ladysmith", the wooden
• frame treated in a dark
stain with some gilded
edges, reminiscent of Edwardian
times.
There was also a Victorian
dining room
: sideboard possibly built of
rosewood with opulent lines
and carved designs oh the
doors.
It is interesting to note
that most Canadian antiques
were originally
brought over from England
and .are not generally found
to be early American as
might be suspected.
"I enjoy having garage
sales," said Reichert, "and
going to them. Quite
regularly I meet people I've
,seen before. This last sale I
advertised for Friday and
Saturday and Friday evening
there were 30 people
waiting to get in when we
opened the doors. One
thing I have found if you '
want to start your sale at
say ten you can expect people
to be there at nine thirty."
•
"I recently took a trip to
Vancouver, and coming in
from the airport over the
bridge, along Granville, I
was amazed to see every.
gam
other house had a garage
sale. Can ;you imagine all
those big homes and some
of the antiques they would
have for sale?"
Come to think of it, while
I was visiting mother in'
Enderby this summer, I
noticed a few new articles in
the house. The words that
kept cropping up were, "1
got that at a garage sale."
It turned out she went to
them all.
!
Talking on the phone to
someone in Toronto last
week, I mentioned the
magic words "garage sale".
They sure are popular out
here, was the quick reply.
I remember my
neighbour in Victoria had
one while I was living there
and a week later there she •
was out there again having
another one.
She was surrounded by
old lamps and bits of pipe
and scatter mats and dishes
and pot, all neatly arranged
and cars were driving up
and there were people all
over the place and I don't
know what all.
Future in danger
by proposals
The future of Western
* Canadian Agriculture could
be jeopardized by a
rumored proposal of the
Minister of Transport to
solve the Crow Rate by paying
the deficit to the
railways.
Ben Thorlakson, president
of the Alberta Cattle
Feeders Association, said
that if the proposed solution
is carried through, it
will lead to the death of any
livestock feeding industry in
Western Canada.
It will also have a
disastrous impact on the
grain and oilseed processing
sector as well as on such
special crops as sunflower
and sugarbeet, he says.
The rumored proposal
being promoted by Jean-
Luc Pepin would pay the
railways the difference between
the present Crows nest
rate and the railway costs of
moving grain.
On this basis raw grain
and oilseed would continue
to move at the very low
Crow rates and at the same
time the railways would be
expected to upgrade their
grain handling facilities to
handle a much greater
percentage of the prairie
crop.
"With transportation
costs on meat and livestock
products inflating at about
10 per cent per annum but
with our competitors in
Eastern Canada and
overseas transporting feed
grain at 1897 rates, there is
no way that we could stay in
business," says
Thorlakson.
In 1979, the Livestock Industry
on the prairies
recieved $2.8 billion to
farmers and special crops
brought in a further
$300,000.
On the other hand wheat
sales from all three provinces
totalled $1.9 billion
'— or only about 65 per cent
of the returns from
livestock production.
In Alberta wheat only accounts
for 11 per cent of
farm cash receipts whereas
beef cattle accounts for 41
per cent, he says.
"It is essential that all
concerned Western groups
join forces to resists this
proposal," says
Thorlakson, "which will
again force the West back
into being a producer of
raw products and leave
Eastern Canada dominant
in the Livestock production
and agricultural processing
sectors."
Major conference
to feature tourism
Tourism Minister Pat
Jordan recently announced
plans for a major conference
and seminar to be
held this November involving
international leaders in
the tourism and hospitality
industry.
Representatives of all
aspects of those industries
will also attend.
Jordan stressed that "for
several years now, individuals
and groups within
our tourism trade have been
telling me and the ministry
there is a need for a comprehensive
learning and
sharing opportunity."
The three and a half day
conference is the first of its
kind ever held in B.C.
The sessions, which will
i
include seminars,
workshops and demonstrations,
as well as educational
and motivational meetings,
are slated for November
23-26 at the Richmond Inn.
"It is the intent of my
Ministry to work hand-inhand
with the tourism and
hospitality industries, to
develop their full potential,
to deal with their problems
and provide leadership in
the achievement of their
goals," Jordan said.
The conference will be a
forum for the sharing of
ideas, solutions and techniques
and will deal with a
full range of subjects including
conventions,
transportation, tours, attractions
and regional
developments.
To reduce breakage
The egg shell may be a
fine way for the chicken to
package its young, but the
Canadian egg industry
Would like to improve on
nature.
About seven per cent of
eggs produced in Canada
today never make it to the
consumer because of
breakage. This costs the egg
industry about $10 million a
year.
"It's a result of increased
mechanization in the egg industry,"
says P.W. Voisey,
director of Agriculture
Canada's Engineering and
Statistical Research Institute
in Ottawa. ;
"When egg handling was
done by hand, breakage
was about two per cent."
The egg industry is concerned
about cutting down
this loss and that's where
the engineers come in.
To develop a tougher
shell, it is first necessary to
have an effective way to
measure egg shell strength.
"Egg shell strength
Overwartea
ill
in
depends on a variety of factors,
such as the type, age
and health of the hen, the
feed used, air temperature
and even the time of daythe
egg is laid," Voisey says.
After measuring the
strengths and weaknesses of
the shell, poultry breeders
and nutritionists will know
better which factors to concentrate
on to come up with
a tougher shell.
Voisey has been looking
at the methods how used to
measure shell strength.
"The shape of the egg
and the fragility of the shell
are a problem. Any measuring
system must be able to
handle large numbers of
eggs at a low cost," the
engineer says.
Some of the most effective
methods now used for
measuring the resistance of
eggs to cracking result in
the breaking and loss of the
egg. That means only one
stress factor at a time can be
measured.
But other tests do not
lm
harm the eggs. One. of these
tests involves putting the
eggs in saline solutions to
measure their specific gravity.
There appears to be a
link between shell strength
and specific gravity.
"But all these test
methods need to be standardized
to give effective and
useful strength
measurements. Each egg
can react differently to the
tests under different conditions,
such as a slight,
change in temperature,"
Voisey says. ,
"More work must be
done before we, as
engineers, can give the
poultry researchers the information
they need to improve
shell strength."
But, all in all, Voisey
concludes that the egg is
everything it's cracked up
to be.
"It's a wonderful way to
package a nutritious product.
But since it wasn't
made to withstand the
bumps of modern
machines, we're trying to
help it along and save the
egg industry from expensive
losses."
I am anxious to have the opportunity to inspect many of
the major highway projects that are soon coming to completion
throughout the province with many of them being
in the Cariboo riding.
****
Premier Bill Bennett recently requested that Prime
Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau organize a conference of
finance ministers from all provinces to discuss solutions to
many of our nation's economic problems.
I believe that this is a very important suggestion that our
Premier has made and I certainly hope that the Prime
Minister acts upon it. «
Many of the difficulties that we are faced with in
Canada today, and especially the problems occurring between
the provinces and Ottawa, are based on economics
and that is certainly where a great deal of emphasis should
be placed.
The question of energy and have or have-not provinces
is being high-lighted at the present time as a result of Ottawa's
discussions of such items as an energy export tax.
Therefore, the questions of financial matters and energy
matters are closely linked and it is felt that the finance
ministers working together closely with Ottawa may very
well find methods that would be much more acceptable to
all concerned.
****
The Premier recently announced that he and the provincial
cabinet will, this fall, conduct a tour of much of
British Columbia and conduct cabinet meetings along the
way.
I believe that these trips through the province are very
very important for two basis reasons.
First, they take the government to the people and particularly
those who do not have easy access to the government
process in Victoria.
Citizens have the opportunity to meet' with members of
cabinet and to provide their thoughts and views on government
policy, etc.
Secondly, it provides the members of the cabinet with
the opportunity to view on a firsthand basis the problems
and concerns of citizens and this is of great assistance in
discussing government policy.
During the last such trip, a cabinet meeting was held in
Quesnel and I am very pleased that during this trip a major
stop will be in Williams Lake.
That will take place on the evening of September 22.
Further detailed'information will be provided to the media
in the very near future.

Pickling and preserving is one of the oldest methods
of having our delicious fall vegetables throughout the
entire.year.
I am happy to say that through Mrs. Cappan's efforts,
Jules Cappan has finally submitted a very special
(and useable) recipe for this column. Although I have
not tried it, it sounds very-much like the onions my husband's
grandmother used to serve.
SILVERSKIN ONION PICKLES
Remove the skins from 10 pounds of small onions
and put them into a crock or enamel container. Add one
cup pickling salt and enough boiling water to cover
(about four quarts).
As soon as water starts to cool, drain off brine and
cover with fresh salt and water and leave for seven days.
On the eighth day drain and rinse well with cold
water. Sprinkle witho alum (about the size of two
walnuts) and put boiling water over the onions. Leave
for one day and rinse with cold water. Then make a
syrup of one quart white vinegar and four cups sugar.
Bring to a boil.
Put the onions in jars and pour the boiling hot syrup
over and seal. Leave one month before using.
The recipe for pickles 1 have that was from my husband's
grandmother is for sweet pickles. As you can see,
the recipe is quite large so you may wish to scale it
down, but these are the best you will ever make.
SWEET PICKLES
,. 300 small cucumbers
2/3 cup salt
1 gallon white vinegar o
4 heaping tablespoons mustard
4 heaping tablespoons salt
4 heaping tablespoons granulated sugar
Vi cup pickling spice
1 ginger root
3 pounds sugar
Boiling water
Scrub the cucumbers very clean and wipe dry. Place
in a crock or enameled pan and sprinkle with 2/3 cup
salt and cover with boiling water. The water must be as
hot as possible and thoroughly cover the cukes. Allow
to stand overnight.
In the morning remove the brine and completely dry
the cukes and crock and put the cukes back into the
crock. Sprinkle cukes with the spices and lay the ginger
root on top.
Mix vinegar, mustard, salt and sugar well and pour
over cukes. Stir well so all cukes are in contact and well
covered with the brine. Set away in a cool place.
Weigh out three pounds sugar and each morning add
one handful to the crock of pickles until it is all used up.
Stir well with each addition.
The day after you use the last handful of sugar, pour
off the brine and heat it to boiling. Put the pickles in
jars and cover with the brine and seal.
Always let any pickle sit for about a month before using
to have the best flavour possible.
The next few columns will deal with various ideas for
putting together lunches for your family.
On August 16 a wellknown
Bouchie Lake couple,
Slim and Mayme Armstrong,
celebrated their 40th
wedding anniversary.
The couple's family
marked the event by
holding an Open House
evening in Richard and Linda
Armstrong's home on
the shores of Bouchie Lake.
- Slim and Mayme are
long-time residents of
Bouchie Lake. Slim, properly
known as Wilfrid
Reginald, moved here with
his family (parents, three
brothers and a sister - later
another sister was born) in
1920.
They pre-empted property
on the shore of Bouchie
Lake (the same property
where Richard and Linda
now have their home) and
built up a profitable dairy
and grain farm.
Mayme, then known as
Emily May Johnstone, had
known Slim in Vancouver
before the Armstrong family
moved to Quesnel.
Soon after the Armstrongs
moved, Mayme also
moved, with her family, to
Edmonton. She and Slim
kept in touch by mail.
In the summer of 1940,
Mayme decided to make a
trip to Vancouver, planning
a brief stop-over in
Quesnel, en route. She
never got past Quesnel!
Instead, after a whirl-,
wind courtship, she and
Slim were married, and settled
down on the family
property.
Eventually, three
children came along. In
1943,' Lewis (Butch) was '
bom. Then Richard arrived
on the scene in 1945. Molly
came along in 1947.
Slim was, for many
years, a well-known hunting
and fishing guide in the
area.
At this time, Mayme was
kept busy baking and cooking,
and preparing meals
for the hungry fishermen
and hunters when they Were
en route to and from their
destinations.
In more recent years,
Slim worked for the B.C.
Forest Service as a look-out
man, retiring just a few
years ago.
Mayme has always been
very active in community
affairs — in particular the
W.I., and more recently,
teaching yoga at night
school.
The open house was attended
by about 100 friends
and relatives of Slim and
Mayme.
- A particularly welcome
and honored guest was
Bouchie Lake's oldest living
resident, Emil Staebler,
who now lives at Dunrovin
Park in Quesnel.
Neighbour Jack
Prestage, who for awhile
worked beside Slim in the
B.C. Forest Service, gave a
