There are many
things in my school
that make me proud. From
the new physical facilities
such as the beautiful murals
painted on our walls that remind
us of our school vision and mission,
our enchanting butterfly enclosure and
the vegetables that the students and teachers
have planted together with their ‘green fingers’
to our friendly canteen vendors who whip up
lip-smacking food for us….. wow, so much to be
thankful about!
Indeed everyone at Red Swastika School,
from the Principal to teachers and pupils,
have made the school a great place
for learning. Happy 60th Birthday!

are helpful and
caring. They attend
to our every need. I have
many close friends here
too! Apart from studying, I have
opportunities to participate in other
activities such as the Butterfliy Enclosure
activities and the Speaker’s Corner.
I am enjoying myself at school everyday.

…it is huge and I have lots of

Nutrition Roadshow 2011
In partnership with The Health
Promotion Board (HPB), the above
roadshow was held over two days
on 10 and 11 February. Pupils had
an enjoyable time learning how
to make healthier food choices
through playing with interactive
learning materials on display-
learning through the fun way!
An engaged independent
learning community was also
seen working on the HPB worksheets, motivating
themselves to discover answers to questions from the
exhibits on display.

ICT Extravaganza 2011
The event was held with strong participation from various
schools in Singapore at Ngee Ann Secondary School on
21st March. Three teachers and six pupils from our school
shared the ICT initiatives that are currently being practised
in their classes. The pupils worked in pairs to demonstrate
their class blogs. Their fluent articulation and strong
demonstrative skills awed the visitors from other schools.
Many visitors took away ideas that could be used including
the use of class blogs to teach English comprehension,
Science and Mathematics concepts.

Extravaganza Team!

Experiential Learning @ Jurong Frog Farm
Learning has been much more experiential for P3s and P s through the series of learning journeys
planned for them. They had the privilege of travelling to the Jurong Frog Farm, Kampong Glam
and the National Museum. Jurong Frog Farm is a new destination that has been included to align
to the STELLAR curriculum for enhancing pupils’ learning. Enjoy the following reflections by some
pupils.

@ Kampong Glam
I learnt how the
Malays in the past lived
and what games they played.
What excited me most was the
mosque. I have never been in a
mosque before and was anxious
to see what was inside and how the
people prayed in it. As a result of my
Learning Journey to Kampong Glam,
I found out a lot about the Malay
culture, food, games, costumes and
housing in Singapore. I enjoyed the trip
and learnt a lot as I had expected,
before the trip began.

Our Art Talent
Our pupil have participated in the 18th World Annual
Children’s Picture Contest organised by IE-NO-HIKARI
Association (Japan) last year. There were altogether
2 8 0 entries but only 5 winners from Singapore.
Our pupil, Goh Pei Yi (P6 Respect) is one of them.

At the frog hop
station, my first jump was
1.7 metres and my second jump
was 1.75 metres. By the way, I was the
super human rocket frog as I jumped
the longest distance! We then went
to a room to listen to a presentation
and watch a video. They were both
very meaningful to me as I learnt more
about frogs.
Soon, it was time to go home. How time
flies! I wish I could go to the Jurong Frog
Farm again. I want to learn more about
frogs as they are amazing creatures!

@ National Museum
I was looking
forward to my visit to the
National Museum. I believe it
would enrich my understanding of the
Singapore culture and history.
At the Museum, we visited the various galleries,
from Singapore History to Film & Wayang,
Photography Food and Fashion. I was amazed
by the various artefacts. I was particularly
amazed to find out about the street food and
the various spices at the Food Gallery.
The clear displays and description at the
various galleries have allowed me to gain a
good understanding of Singapore’s past.
It was indeed an enriching
experience.

nhancing Holistic Pupil Excellence
Programme For
Active Learning (PAL)
PAL is introduced to the Primary 1 & 2 pupils this year. It is a major
initiative to address the greater emphasis on non-academic programmes
for the Primary 1 & 2 pupils and it consists of modules of activities in the
following areas: Sports, Outdoor Education, Performing Arts and Visual
Arts, which are carried out within the curriculum hours.
PAL is one of the recommendations of the Primary Education Review
and Implementation (PERI) Committee to raise primary education to a
new level. The PERI recommendations seek to ensure that our young are
equipped not just with content knowledge, but also with the necessary
skills and values to thrive in a fast-changing and globalised future.
Throughout the year, the pupils will experience varied activities as listed
below:

For the past few months, during the PAL lessons, the school environment
has become even more vibrant with pupils’ laughter and enthusiasm.
Pupils look forward to the lessons and enjoy the opportunities that allow
them to create and explore.
The lessons are followed by reflections and discussions for pupils to
share their experiences and develop social emotional competencies.

In alignment with the strategic thrust of the school to strengthen our home-schoolcommunity
partnership, a conference and face-to-face parent-teacher meeting were
organised.
Parent’s Conference 2011, held on March, was attended by many parents of P1
to P6 pupils. Important information that pertains to PSLE, Subject-based banding,
Direct School Admission (DSA) and Programme for Active Learning (PAL) was
disseminated.
On a more personal note, 25 March was set aside for a face-to-face meeting with our
parents while pupils had a day of e-learning from home. It was a day well-spent to
share information on the character and academic development of each child.
The ‘village meetings’ have ended, but the village spirit thrives on. Together, the village
will continue to raise the child.
