A warm, inviting reception area gives way to their showroom in an unconventional fashion; the door between the two spaces is hinged on a rotating pivot which allows the illusion of the two spaces being interconnected and separate at the same time. The principle of fusing inside and outside also guided the decision to use hanging plexiglass partitions in their office area, transforming raw industrial space with a clean, contemporary design that balances privacy and openness. rENDEZ-VOuS craZy – liKe a foX Starting a business in these economic times? You must be crazy! Nick Marcou has heard that one a few times since recently leaving his old job and starting up Optimal furs at 9400 Saint-laurent boulevard. “Sure I’m crazy… like a fox,” he answers, smiling. “And not just because I’m in the fur business.” A veteran of more than twenty-five years in an industry that has seen its share of ups and downs, Nick believes that there are winners and losers in every economic condition. He says that sound business planning and sticking to the basics will help him survive the tough times and put him in a good position to prosper when the situation improves. Making a superior product and aggressively marketing it, Nick believes, will be critical to his success. “you can’t sit around waiting for the sales to come to you. you have to get out there. Every business, even a small one like mine, has to think in terms of the global marketplace.” Nick isn’t sitting around. He plans to present his product line at fur shows all over the world in the coming months. help from the cDEc Nick Marcou counts among his supporters Jean Choquette from the Ahuntsic-Cartierville CDEC (Community Economic Development Corporation). A government-funded non-profit organization, the CDEC contributes to the development of the borough by initiating or supporting various projects that combine economic results with social gains. It offers numerous consulting services as well as term financing to both start-up and established businesses based in the district or moving here. “One advantage of support from the CDEC is that we can finance a variety of projects and for a range of reasons,” says Choquette. “Moving expenses of businesses coming to the area, leasehold improvements, outlays related to expansions, as well as, intangibles such as travel expenses, and costs related to advertising and promotion. Our loans range from $3,000 to $150,000, and reimbursement terms are customized to meet the client’s needs.” When asked what he liked most about Nick Marcou’s start-up, Choquette answers without hesitation. “Nick’s years of experience in the trade convinced us of his competence. His business plan was sound, and his personal commitment to success was certain.” In addition to the expertise that it provides free of charge, the CDEC has a network of commercial and financial organizations at its disposal.
