Sustainable development,
synergy and communication
Yves Weyts
Terry Somers, Ann Vansumere
In 2006, CFE created a new division: sustainable develop-
ment, synergy and communication. The CFE group and
its business units are working on new projects that have
an impact on our daily life and the community. On the
one hand, because of the very nature of its business, CFE
participates in new infrastructure projects, such as the
rebuilding of the main boulevards in Antwerp, the first
section of the RER to Louvain-la-Neuve, the Museum of
Modern Art in Luxembourg or the renovation of the Central
Station in Brussels. On the other hand, because of the
work it undertakes: road or water works, soil remediation,
construction of office and apartment buildings, assembly of
high-voltage pylons and overhead wires for rail traffic.
The CFE group plans projects, builds them and hopes to
maintain them throughout their existence. The role of this
division is focused primarily on the coordination, supervi-
sion, training and awareness-raising of the different man-
agement teams inside the group, within the framework
of their different fields of activity related to sustainable
development.
This translates for 2007, in practice, to:
1. Social responsibility
Communication is the basic instrument for giving life to
and achieving all these objectives within the group. The
employees of the communication department are therefore
part of the engine that is driving these changes. Through
the company magazine, the organization of events and
other activities, they are translating CFE’s commitment
into a practical reality.
In the years to come, CFE wishes to give greater form
and structure to this vision of a responsible company.
During the last meeting of the group of fifteen managers,
CFE’s action plan concerning sustainable development was
debated and defined.
For 2007, the various objectives and actions planned have
been divided into five major themes:
• the group’s social responsibility;
• environmental responsibility;
• relationships with customers and suppliers;
• corporate governance;
• human and social commitment.
Theme Commitments Initiatives
Safety Prevention of all accidents. Greater awareness campaigns with all operational
employees in the construction division emphasizing
the 10 non-negotiable points.
Top priority for safety. At each meeting, make safety the first item on the
agenda.
