tracts of land. prc-feral>ly uninterrupted
by public rcuck. Locating such
places slxHikln't present an obstacle,
let's kxik at private land first.
Hunting private property requires
trespass permission, either free or for
a fee. Here's where PR skills come
into play. If you're hunting close to
home, check out relatives, friends,
friends of friends, etc. who own land.
Often, a considerable amount of huntable
land is only a shintail relative
and a few qucsthms away.
Kmx'k on ikxirs. I've met nuny
ranchers and famx-rs who aren't fond
of coyotes, and most will grant you
permission if you obey the roles
(close gates, stay away from Ixiildings.
cattle, etc.). Gates closed to t>ig gamehunters
are often eagerly ripened to
predator hunters who will relieve the
landowner of his coyote problems.
Pump them for information on any
coyote sightings or dead livestock that
miglit Ix- on tlx-ir property. (Note:
Ranchers/fanners often provide an
exaggerated estimation of tlx- number
of coyotes they have on tlx-lr property.)
If you can get litem to show you
the boundaries of their property tlx-n
you can scout on your own.
Armed with a gixxl nud map
and county plat txxik. you can
quickly figure out who owns wlut
piece of property aixl where they
live, narrowing down your search
considerably. Once I gel permission
from one landowner. I'll pay a visit
Hunting the outback can put you in range ot coyote that have seldom It
ever heard a call. This ups your odds ot bringing in a yote.
THE CAT AND FOX
Cats have incredible hearing and can hear
frequencies from 250-35.000Hz, roughly 7
octavos of sound, with almost maximum
efficiency. Maximum efficiency is
achieved at 8,000Hx with 10 times the
sensitivity of coyoto. Their overall maximum
range with any measurable hearing
response is much broader ranging fiom
SS-79,OOOHz, almost one octave above
the limit of the coyote. Theii upper range
of hearing is so high that cats may bo
capable of delecting the sonar of bats!
High chirp bird sounds are effective cat
The fox, on the other hand, does not
have the greatest hearing of all. despite
vast anecdotal evidenco. Tho fox can hear
a range of frequencies from 100-6.000HZ.
roughly 6 octaves of sound, with almost
maximum efficiency. Maximum efficiency
range with any measuiable hearing
responie is much larger ranging from 50-
28.000Hz.
around 3.000Hz, then the nujority of the
HARRINGTON
RICHARDSON
Dawn was a thin gray promise
in the eastern sky when I
shouldered a sack of decoys
and grabbed my 12-gauge. The tall
tree line where I'd parked led to an
open area a quarter mile away, where
I intended to set up. As I walked, the
sky brightened, revealing February's
leafless tree limbs. I heard the first
eerie cackle of the birds as they
woke somewhere back in shadowed
limber.
When I reached the field it was
just light enough to see. My timing
was perfect. It had to be. When you
seriously hunt crows you do so on
their schedule, not your own. They're
early risers and you must be too.
I'd staked out only half my decoys
when the raucous cries of a hundred
birds leaving their roosts stopped me
cold. They were already in the air,
coming my way, and coming fast. I ran
for the brush pile I used as a blind,
trying to stuff shotgun shells into the
Browning.
The first gaggle of noisy birds
swung clear of the tree line directly
overhead. Just as quick, four black
bandits wheeled out of formation
gliding down toward my half set.
There was no time to lift a call, and
no need. These birds were locked in.
I snuggled the scattergun to my
shoulder and put the bead on the
black beak of the lead bird. He
plunged straight down as his pals
fought for altitude. I swung after
them. Two more quick shots brought
down his wingman. Then all hell
broke loose as the big flock above
broke in every direction screaming
at my trickery. And, I hadn't even
finished setting up all the decoys!
nuny years experience. Tlx- likelihood of
such :xxick-nts can Ix- reduced if liunters
follow specific steps for increased safety-
while calling for predators.
Steps of Increased Safety
The three golden nik-s for firearms safety:
Keep yxxir barrel pointexl in a safe
direction at all limes — mind your
Keep your finger off the trigger until
yxxi are reach' lo slioot.
Keep all guns unlcxtdcxl until you are
While tlx-se Ixisic nik-s are hugely
important and all hunters must always
obey diem, the crux of this ankle deals
with predator calling specific guidelines
to ensure maximum safety.
Step 1: Safe Shooting Essentials
I icing aware of yxxir txickstop is vital day
or niglm. Set up so that no shots are uken
widi farm houses or roads in the hack-
gnxind Refrain from shooting at preda-
cent increases, t nkxid before you get
into your truck and Ix* sure to have
the firearm barrel pointed away from
harm's way.
Step 2: Where Is Your Partner?
In my 24 years of prvxhtor calling 90
percent of dx* tinx* I'm alone. I'm nxirv
prxxUxtivx* sok>. However, I realize tlx*
canuradc-rie of luving a Imnting pannc*r
ackfc to the fun. While* xjfety concerns
slxxikl lx- always paramount, they ate
nxiltiplicxl when hunting with odx-rs.
Wlx-n you luvx* a partner, it's impe-ra-
tivx* tlut yxxi know exactly where each
odx-r are- kxatexL Most predator hunters
set up sick* by side* or luck to lx»ck. It's
easy to whisper and fun to share the
hunt. Ihis is dx- safest way to hunt with
a |xittix-r. for sonx- kxalk>NX IXJWCVCT.
dx* practice of "splitting up to cover the
terrain" has nx-rit. Wlx*n separating dur-
ing a hunt, clay or niglM, it is vital to
know your partners location. This is
crucial in the dirk.
The obvious txk of vision calls for
mote than a " Bob's-ovx-r-there" mcntility.
It might Ix* necessary to actually walk a
partner to yxxir set up location and sliow
him vvlx-re* yxxi will Ix* sitting This is
especially tnx* if one hunter is unfamiliar
widi the hunting grounds. Once set up.
during night hunts, my hunting partner
and I aim our lund Ix-kl bghts at each
odx-r and nuke a circular nxukm. Tliis
communiaitxin affirms tlut we know
where each other are and the
calling-hunting does not start until we
have visual confirmation of our portions.
Once in position and the- culling has
stuted. never move to a different location,
'llx.- temptation to move for a Ixttc-r view-
can Ix- devastating. Wicn hunting solo,
relocating is no lag deal. However, when
a partner is involved, moving nuy be a
deadly mistake. If you haw to move for
any reason, use a two-way radio or cell
plxine to eomniunkate yxxir intentkxxs.
If no verbal communication is possibk*.
stay put
Step 3: Develop Detailed
Communication
Effective communication with your hunt-
ing partner will incnsoc yxxir success
and yxxir safety. Make* vcrtxd dircctkins
specific so that nothing is k-ft to question.
If questions arise, dx- tinx* to ask is when
