Cologne Answers from: 06/20/12 Area Sophomore Attends Leadership Program Hannah DeMoss recently attended the Iowa Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar representing South Central Calhoun High School. DeMoss joined 201 other young leaders representing as many high schools from throughout Iowa June 15th – 17th at Central College in Pella, Iowa. HOBY Leadership Seminars bring together a select group of high school sophomores to interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education and the professions to discuss present and future issues. The goal is to provide the youths a stimulating forum for learning about critical issues while broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self-development. HOBY leaders are also challenged to return to their communities to perform at least 100 hours of community service within 12 months following the Seminar. The cost of attendance for each ambassador is paid for by local sponsors. An investment in an ambassador from your community is an investment in your community. “HOBY does not teach what to think but how to think.” Leadership Seminar Chair Rachel Anderson says. “We give ambassadors the tools to make positive change in their own homes, schools and communities. Ambassadors are challenged to discover new methods of leadership in their personal lives, in groups as well as society.” Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership was established in 1958 by the popular actor Hugh O’Brian following a visit to Africa where he was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. “One of the things Schweitzer said to me was that the most important thing in education was to teach young people to think for themselves,” O’Brian said. “From that inspiration, and with the support of others who believe in youth and the American dream, I started HOBY to seek out, recognize, and develop outstanding leadership potential among our nation’s youth.” Further information about HOBY activities and how to sponsor an ambassador from your community is available by calling Rachel Anderson 563-605-0198 or email at lsc@iahoby.org. Snyder receives a Bachelor of Science degree from AIB Des Moines, Iowa – Koda Snyder of Pomeroy has been awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from AIB College of Business. AIB held two commencement exercises June 3 at its Activities Center, 2500 Fleur Drive. In the past year, 147 students have completed Associate in Applied Science degrees and 224 have completed Bachelor of Science degrees. Eric Wuebker named FFA scholar The National Future Farmers of America awarded a $2,500 Dean Carlson Honorary scholarship to Eric Wuebker of the Southern Cal FFA. Wuebker plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Iowa State University. The 1,539 scholarships awarded this year were selected from 8,050 applicants from across the country based on the applicant’s academic record, FFA and other community and school activities, supervised agricultural experiences in agricultural education and future goals. Dean Carlson Honorary Scholarship Fund, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation, sponsors the scholarship. Kayla plans to use the funds to purse a degree at Iowa State University. This scholarship is one of 1,539 awarded through the National FFA Scholarship Program this year. Currently, 130 sponsors generously contribute more than $1.9 million to support this program. This is the 28 th year that scholarships have been made available through the National FFA Foundation by individuals and business and industry sponsors to reward and encourage excellence and enable students to pursue their educational goals. Scholarship recipients were selected from 8,050 applicants from across the country. Selections were based on the applicant’s record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural experience (SAE) in agricultural education and future goals. The National FFA Organization is a national youth organization of 540,379 student members as part of 7,489 local FFA chapters in Graduate & Professional Studies. Misty Messerly attended the Fort Dodge location of Buena Vista University Graduate & Professional Studies. 366 Wartburg College students receive diplomas Waverly, Iowa — Wartburg College awarded diplomas to 366 students during Spring Commencement May 27. Another 17 students in the Class of 2012 participated in the ceremony, but are not expected to conclude work toward their degrees until August. In addition, 33 students received diplomas during Winter Commencement in December. Wartburg is a four-year, selective liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, internationally recognized for community engagement, with 1,805 students from 29 U.S. states and 49 countries.
