School board members discussed
parking problems at the South
Central Calhoun High School in
Lake City and at the South Central
Calhoun Middle School in Rockwell
City. The discussion on different
problems at the two schools occurred
at the joint meeting of the Southern
Cal and Rockwell City/Lytton school
boards on June 18.
The two school districts are whole
grade sharing partners, sharing high
school and middle school grades
starting with the school year just
completed and sharing elementary
grades as well in the school year
coming up.
The issue at the middle school
in Rockwell City is event-night
congestion that occurs on the drives
at the entrances, especially at the
east entrance, where parked cars
create an obstacle for fi re trucks
start serving at 11 a.m.
The Big Parade starts at 1:30 a.m.
and music in the bandstand by Slow
Jam starts after the parade. The Lake
City Union Church will have an ice
cream social from 3 to 5 p.m.
The new Iowa Eagles minor
league football team will play at the
high school football fi eld starting at
4 p.m. on Saturday.
The 53 rd Annual Top Rail Saddle
Club Rodeo at the saddle club
grounds on the north side of Lake
City on Franklin St. begins at 7
p.m. on Saturday and then again on
Sunday.
Fireworks follow the rodeo on
Saturday. The carnival on Saturday
will be from 11 a.m. to midnight
and other emergency vehicles. The
vehicles parked along the drive also
make it diffi cult to drop off children
and people with mobility problems
near the entrance.
The middle school gym and
auditorium is used for events not only
involving middle school students but
for some of the events of students at
all grade levels. The two parking lots
have adequate parking available but
some people prefer parking close
to the entrance, particularly in the
winter.
Board members discussed possibly
creating fi nes or tow away zones
at the entrance areas. Establishing
enforceable fi nes would require
creation of an ordinance by the city
council.
At the high school, the problem
is diffi culty in parking during the
school day, or, according to retiring
principal Earl Trachsel, diffi culty in
getting students parked in the proper
(closed from 5 – 8 p.m.)
On Sunday, brunch will be served
at the saddle club grounds from 7 to
11 a.m.
Community worship will take
place at 11 a.m.
Friends of the Library Party &
Grill Out takes place from non to
1:30 p.m.
A Shine & Show Car Show begins
at 11 a.m. at Goins Park.
A Tractor Pull begins at 11 a.m. at
NAPA on Hwy. 175.
The Lake City Betterment
Tournament & Grill Out takes place
at 11:30 a.m. in Goins Park.
Western Days is sponsored by
Lake City Betterment Association
and Top Rail Saddle Club.
School parking issues discussed
spaces and at the proper angle.
“There are enough spaces for
students to park if they park where
they are supposed to,” Earl Trachsel.
Currently one parking area is
supposed to be used only by juniors
and seniors but that has not always
been observed.
One potential remedy for the
situation is assigning each student
who pays a refundable deposit a
parking place with a number that
will be printed on a window sticker
or laminated ID. The deposit would
be forfeited for violation of rules
regarding parking.
Completion of construction at the
high school is expected to free up
some parking spaces but not enough
to eliminate parking problems
without rule enforcement.
The parking issue was a discussion
item and did not result in any action
at the June 18 meeting.
SCC cook positions consolidated
By Ken Ross
Graphic-Advocate Editor
Board members from both the
Southern Cal and Rockwell City/
Lytton school boards had agreed at
the joint board meeting on June 18
in Rockwell City that the positions
of head cook should be consolidated
into one position following the
resignation of Susan Brant as the
head cook of the Southern Cal
District.
Rose Kutz, the head cook at
the RCL District, said that if she
accepted the position of head cook,
she would want a dollar and hour
more for the added responsibility.
Mark Schleisman, SC board
member, expressed concern about
the fact that the SC cook resigned
after her pay was reduced and now a
raise is being considered for the head
cook position. He suggested that the
position of head cook be advertised.
Schleisman also objected to giving
a raise just because responsibilities
had been added. He said there was
not a consistent policy of increasing
salary for a staff member when
responsibilities were added.
Jim Brown, SC board president
explained that the pay reduction for
the head SC cook was a transitional
pay adjustment in order to bring
salaries between the districts in line
Kyle Welander, RCL Board
member, said that the SC head cook
resigned and now there was a head
cook with over 20 years experience
available for the job of shared head
cook.
Mike Sexton, RCL Board
president, said that if there had not
been a resignation, the two positions
would not be consolidated because
both head cooks had been doing a
good job.
Jeff Kruse, superintendent, said
that the SC district would still need
a full-time cook as well as parttime
assistants under a sharing plan
under which the head cook would be
shared on an 80 percent RCL and a
20 percent SC basis. The head cook
would provide oversight of the menu
and do paperwork for both districts
but would not be involved in day to
day cooking duties in the SC district.
Kutz said that if she were hired
as shared head cook, she would
make only those changes in the
SC program as required. Actually,
because of federal laws going into
effect, there will be substantial
changes that will be required for
lunch programs at both districts.
“Your butter and peanut butter
that sits out every day for your
bread, that’s out. Students getting
all the toast and all the cereal they
want. That’s out. We have to serve
a maximum amount of grains per
week,” Kutz said.
One of the differences that will
not change is the fact that milk will
be sold in plastic bottles at the high
school in Lake City and in cartons
in the other grades in Rockwell City.
The SC board had approved the
plastic bottles because the students
both more milk in those containers.
The RCL board approved
carton milk based on Kutz’s
recommendation. She said the
plastic was about a dime higher.
“If we went with plastic I’d
be putting them all through the
dishwasher because I’m into
recycling,” she said.
The school district will advertise
for the head cook position but a
salary for the position has not been
set.
2 The Graphic-Advocate Commentary
June 27, 2012
I always wave at oncoming cars
when I'm running. I do this not because
I'm a friendly guy, but I want
to appear as a friendly guy. If it
should happen (and it has), that I'm
way out in the country and need a
ride home, I want motorists to pick
me up.
Waving has given me ample opportunity
to study the return wave of
drivers and passengers. Drivers typically
have at least one hand on the
steering wheel (hopefully), therefore
the one-finger raise (index finger)
is often used. Sometimes they will
point the index finger.
Same goes for the two-finger raise,
or point. Farmers in pick-up trucks,
will often include a head nod along
with the finger wave, especially if
they're wearing a seed corn cap.
If they use the three-or-four-finger
wave, it will often appear as if they
are “throwing” their fingers at you.
This type of wave almost always includes
a head or chin nod.
My favorite return wave is the fullhand
wave with palm showing. This
is the wave I use to greet oncoming
traffic, and when it is returned, I feel
confident that this driver would help
me if necessary.
Passengers in vehicles, because they
do not have their hands on a steering
wheel, if they wave at all, will typically
utilize the full-palm. Multiple
hands raising in a vehicle, from both
driver and passengers, is a great sign
of friendliness.
Of course, in the Midwest, driv-
It's part of Midwest
A n t h r o p o l o -
gists tell us that
the hand wave
originated from
ancient man.
When two
hunters met in
the wild, the open palm was a sign
of no weapon, or no harm intended.
This gesture eventually developed
into the handshake. Not only could
the lack of weapon be felt, like at
night, but also the warmth of the
other person.
I recently participated in a relay run
across the state of Iowa. I informed
my team, the Roadrunners, about my
study of hand waves. We agreed that
we would all wave at oncoming traffic
and conduct an informal study of
the different types of return waves.
Low and behold, a new type of return
hand wave was discovered. The evolutionary
scales have been tipped. It
is THE CELL PHONE WAVE. Yes!
A good fifty percent of all the drivers
we met were talking on cell phones.
A woman driver actually waved
back with her cell phone. Yep. You
read it first right here—the melding
of technology with an age-old hand
gesture.
Nevada is the first state to legalize
driverless cars. The cars are guided
by sensors. Someone still has to be
behind the wheel, but he/she doesn't
For me, nothing creates a more
adverse reaction to a commercial
product than a promise of something
for free.
The idea that a profit-making
enterprise is simply bestowing its
generosity on customers without
getting anything in return is insulting
to the intelligence.
When a miraculously effective
product is promoted on the TV along
with a second absolutely free one,
just try ordering the second free
one without getting the first at an
astonishingly low price.
Junk mail that has the word “free”
on the envelope is particularly
onerous and should be discarded
without opening.
My sister’s son sent away for a free
packet of seeds when he was 10. He
subsequently got regular shipments
of garden products along with bills
for the unwanted products, although
not for the original packet of seeds
he received.
After failing to receive payments
the letters got particularly nasty.
Fortunately, my 10-year-old nephew
was able to avoid the threatened
financial ruin.
What I find particularly bothersome
is the free stuff given away by the
companies I already do business
with. These are available through
“reward points” or “customer
appreciation points” that can be
activated through following the
instructions contained on page three
of the company policy on customer
notices. For a small shipping and
handling fee, qualified customers can
get software for creating a flow chart
or a choice from among recordings
of the most popular Chinese operas.
Creating a flow chart might be
useful, although I have no idea why,
but I’m skeptical that it is worth the
small handling fee plus the cost of
upgrading my computer to operate
the software. Also, the Chinese
operas are not available on eighttrack
so I have no use for them.
Sometimes reward points can be
cash back for a purchase doesn’t
make sense – “Give me money and
I’ll give you a product and some of
Targeted discounting is a related
annoyance. When I see a product
I use offering discounts that I’m
not qualified for – the owning your
HEALTH & NUTRITION NEWS
From Iowa State University Extension
It’s The Berries
Trust the kids to tell the honest
truth. They know that bright
red strawberries are better than
pink ones. And deep blue-purple
blueberries are better than red-blue
ones. “The pigments that give
berries their intense colors also are
the anthocyanins that give berries
more antioxidant power than most
fruits and vegetables,” said Ruth
Litchfield, Iowa State University
Extension nutrition specialist.
While most of us like fresh berries
for their sweetness or tartness,
nutritionists promote their potential
power to help prevent cell damage.
“Anthocyanins have been implicated
in decreasing the risk of cancer
and heart disease by inhibiting
tumor growth and decreasing blood
clotting,” Litchfield said. “They’re
also rich in
Vitamin C and fiber, fair in
potassium and folate, and relatively
low in calories.”
Look for containers at the store
or farmers market without stains,
moisture, or mold. Berries should be
firm, plump, and dry. Strawberries
don’t ripen after harvest, so stay
away from green or yellow ones.
Steer away from blueberries that
are green or blackberries that are
red. Raspberries come in a variety
of colors; make sure the ones you
buy have the right color. For more
fun, take your kids berry-picking or
grow berries at home. When buying
frozen berries, shake the bag first. A
big lump is a sign of defrost.
How to Store
When you get your bounty home,
check for damaged berries and throw
those away immediately, before
they spoil the rest. Strawberries,
blueberries, and raspberries last
longer if stored at higher humidity
with lower air circulation in the
coldest place in your fridge. Produce
drawers are ideal. If not available,
a sealed container will do the job.
Keep blackberries uncovered.
Calhoun County Expo 5th Antique Tractor Ride
Sunday, July 15 @ 10:00 am
Meet in the “pit area” of the
fairgrounds and ride to University
While berries can last one week in
your fridge, eat them within three
days for best nutrition.
Preparing
Rinse berries in cold water when
you’re ready to eat them. Add berries
to low-fat yogurt, ice cream, wholegrain
cereals, salads, or smoothies.
“Sometimes parents think too hard
how to get their kids to eat fruit,” says
Krieger, who recommends eating
berries fresh when in season. For
a low-calorie jam, Krieger suggests
baking berries in the oven at 400°F
for 10 minutes. You don’t need to
add sugar since the jam contains the
natural sweetness from the fruit.
Freezing
Freeze berries so you and your kids
can enjoy them long after the season
is over. Spread berries on a baking
sheet and place in the freezer for a
few hours then transfer to a freezersafe
bag. Keep strawberries whole
to retain more nutrients.
2011 WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR
Lake City Water Supply
This report contains important information regarding the water quality in our water system. The source of our water is groundwater. Our groundwater
is drawn from the Cretaceous (Dakota Sandstone) aquifer(s).
Our water quality testing shows the following results:
The City Council of Lake City, Iowa met in
regular session on Monday, June 18, 2012 at
6:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers. Mayor
Fahan presided with the following members
present: Himes, Bellinghausen, Green and
Kramer*; absent: Ringgenberg. Department
heads/staff present: Norma DeVries, and
Bobby Rist. Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Green stated the June 4th minutes should
have read the committee she suggested was
for long-term planning and goals. Motion by
Bellinghausen, second by Green, to approve
the consent agenda consisting of the agenda,
June 4th minutes (with noted correction),
summary of claims, May Clerk’s Report, and
Sidewalk Permit for Blair’s Artistic Touches &
Design, unanimous.
No further comments have been received
in regard to the proposed chicken ordinance.
Motion by Bellinghausen, second by Himes,
approving the second reading and waiving the
requirements for a third reading. Ayes – Himes,
Bellinghausen, Green. Administrator will check
quorum requirements for waiving readings.
(Note: suspending the third reading requires
approval by four members; therefore, the third
and final reading will be held on July 2.)
Motion by Green, second by Bellinghausen,
approving Top Rail Saddle Club putting up “No
Parking” signs on the north side of Franklin
Street for both rodeos, unanimous. They will
be offering free shuttle service from Goins Park
and the Town Square.
Motion by Bellinghausen, second by Green,
approving necessary bandstand repairs and
painting at a cost of $4,280 to be paid from the
LOST fund, unanimous.
Art Daisy was present to review the proposed
contract changes as were suggested at the
June 4th meeting. (*Kramer arrived during
discussion.) Following discussion, motion by
Bellinghausen, second by Himes, approving
the contract which is effective January 1, 2013,
unanimous.
Administrator Kelly updated council on
revisions to fees being charged by Red Cross
for learn to swim sessions. With the increase,
recommendation was made to increase
swim lessons to $20/session. Motion by
Bellinghausen, second by Green, setting the
fee at $20/session. Mayor Fahan announced
American Legion and VFW will pay the $20 fee
for all Southern Cal kids attending Level 1 &
Level 2.
Presented for council consideration was a
Building Permit for Andy and Shasta Thompson,
209 W. Jackson (back deck). After review, a
motion was made by Kramer, second by Himes,
to approve the permit subject to City Code and
Zoning requirements. Unanimous
Mayor Fahan stated alternatives need to
be sought for the senior citizens center as it
is currently not cost effective. Suggestions
included tearing out the wall and installing
accordion doors, to provide additional capacity
for large functions. In addition, the room could
be rented to the public for small groups. The A/C
will soon need replaced, however, potentially
heating and cooling could be provided from
the community building units, with additional
ductwork cheaper than purchasing and
maintaining new units.
Fahan inquired about street patching;
and brought up several situations relating to
ordinance enforcement for dangerous and
abandoned buildings, mowing and weed
nuisances, and junk cars. Residents and
business owners are reminded to make sure
address numbers are on buildings for delivery
and emergency purposes; in addition, he has
been informed that based on postal regulations
mail service could be terminated to buildings
without visible address numbers. Administrator
was instructed to send letters to business
owners needing to patch sidewalks.
Green reported Tony Macke is willing to
serve on the Long-Term Planning Committee.
Additional members are being sought.
Chief Rist informed the council that Officer
Cook has returned to duty following his surgery.
Tentatively Cook will attend the Academy’s fall
session.
There being no further business, a
motion was made by Green and seconded
by Bellinghausen to adjourn at 7:56 PM,
unanimous.
Gary Fahan, Mayor
Kimberly Kelly, City Administrator
Mayor Heinlen called the meeting to order
with the following members present: Lange,
Hepp, Walters, Dawson and Hendricks
Motion by Lange, second by Hendricks,
approving the agenda; unanimous.
Motion by Hendricks, second by Walters,
to approve the consent agenda of the June 4
meeting minutes, bills as submitted, various
cigarette permits, Calhoun County Expo Beer
License and Firework Permit; unanimous.
Ryan Hildreth asked the council to forgive
excess sewer due to watering his lawn. Motion
by Hepp, second by Walters to forgive the
excess sewer charges at 348 N. 1st Street;
unanimous.
The Mayor announced the high bid of $26,000
received for the sale of 702 High Street. Then
as advertised he allowed the seven qualified
bidders the opportunity to raise the price. The
winning bid was for $47,000 by Ken Hupton.
Motion by Lange, second by Dawson to
approve a Resolution 12-5 Resolution to Sale
702 High Street to the highest bidder Ken
Hupton at a cost of $47,000. Ayes – Lange,
Hepp, Walter, Dawson and Hendricks. Nays –
none.
Ryan Hildreth told the council that he felt his
neighbor had placed a fence on the north edge
of his property and had not applied for a zoning
permit prior to the start of the project. He told
the council that the late permit was a violation
of the zoning ordinance and asked how they
planned to rectify the issue.
Motion by Hepp, second by Hendricks to
allow the Clerk and Mayor to pay bills prior to
the end of the fiscal year, unanimous.
Motion by Dawson, second by Hendricks
to approve Resolution 12-6 Fire Department
Capital Improvement Plan transferring up to
$7000 for apparatus and major equipment.
Ayes – Lange, Hepp, Walter, Dawson and
Hendricks. Nays – none.
Salaries. Ayes – Lange, Hepp, Walter, Dawson
and Hendricks. Nays – none.
Motion by Hepp, second by Hendricks to
approval for an application for the Rockwell
City, Iowa tax abatement program for 386
Austin Street. Ayes- Lange, Hepp, Walters,
Dawson and Hendricks. Nays – none.
Teresa Hildreth told the council that the SCC
boy’s drill team would like to hold a fundraiser at
the pool and wondered what the charge would
be. Four of the boys on the team are currently
on the Rockwell City pool staff and would be
willing to donate their time for the fundraiser.
The council asked her to talk to the managers
to see if one of them would be willing to donate
time as well and report back to them at the next
meeting.
The purchaser of 1002 High Street asked the
council to consider allowing him to have horses.
The current owner stated that there have been
horses at that location for 50 plus years. The
council asked him to talk to neighboring
property owners and they would discuss further
at the next council meeting.
Motion by Lange, second by Dawson to hire
Trae’s Tree Service at a cost of $700 to cut
down a dead tree and grind the stump located
at 608 Lake Street, unanimous.
The council received email requesting
repairs on Lewis Street. After much discussion
they asked Lowell Stoolman to get estimates to
durapatch and bring them to the next meeting
for further discussion.
from NAOH to polyphosphate for PH control;
unanimous.
Mayor Heinlen called for further business
and, with none, motion by Lange, second
by Hepp to adjourn the meeting at 8:15 PM;
unanimous. Next meeting Monday, July 2 at
7:00PM. Warrants 52891- 52952
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes.
To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column
and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box.
You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Area Sophomore Attends
Leadership Program
Hannah DeMoss recently attended
the Iowa Hugh O’Brian Youth
(HOBY) Leadership Seminar
representing South Central Calhoun
High School. DeMoss joined 201
other young leaders representing as
many high schools from throughout
Iowa June 15th – 17th at Central
College in Pella, Iowa.
HOBY Leadership Seminars bring
together a select group of high school
sophomores to interact with groups
of distinguished leaders in business,
government, education and the
professions to discuss present and
future issues. The goal is to provide
the youths a stimulating forum for
learning about critical issues while
broadening their understanding
of their leadership potential and
quest for self-development. HOBY
leaders are also challenged to return
to their communities to perform
at least 100 hours of community
service within 12 months following
the Seminar. The cost of attendance
for each ambassador is paid for by
local sponsors. An investment in an
ambassador from your community is
an investment in your community.
“HOBY does not teach what to
think but how to think.” Leadership
Seminar Chair Rachel Anderson
says. “We give ambassadors the
tools to make positive change
in their own homes, schools and
communities. Ambassadors are
challenged to discover new methods
of leadership in their personal lives,
in groups as well as society.”
Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership
was established in 1958 by the
popular actor Hugh O’Brian
following a visit to Africa where he
was inspired by a meeting with Dr.
Albert Schweitzer.
“One of the things Schweitzer
said to me was that the most
important thing in education was
to teach young people to think for
themselves,” O’Brian said. “From
that inspiration, and with the support
of others who believe in youth and
the American dream, I started HOBY
to seek out, recognize, and develop
outstanding leadership potential
among our nation’s youth.”
Further information about HOBY
activities and how to sponsor an
ambassador from your community
Your Columnist’s Mary is in the
in for her
On Wednesday Lois Barker treated
glazed donuts for her birthday.
Thanks a lot Lois.
Don’t know how many of you
know Veda Kail of Farnhamville but
she is in the hospital. She now is in
the Paula Baber center in Ft Dodge.
So everyone get out and enjoy the
weather as you know Iowa and what
can happen next.
Thanks
SUNNYVIEW
Lois Hoyt had luncheon guests
on Tuesday, June 12: her grandson,
Staff Sergeant Cody Hoyt, and
his wife Crystal and Lois’ greatgranddaughter
Taitum of El Paso,
Texas. Tim Hoyt and Anita Schuttler
also joined them.
Thank you to Jo Fickbohm,
President of Sunnyview Residents
Committee, for this report. “An
evening in the courtyard, with Big
Band music and some golden oldies
was enjoyed by 34 Sunnyview
residents on Tuesday evening June
19thst. The entertainment was
furnished by Rex Kleemeier on
drums, accompanied by recorded CD
music. His wife Charlotte assisted
with the set up and organization of
the CDs.
The residents enjoyed the music
from 6 – 8 p.m. The weather cooperated
by being a little windy so no
bugs or mosquitoes were a problem,
however, the wind had a tendency
to be bothersome while serving
the bars, cookies and Chex mix, as
plastic and light weight containers
needed to be weighted down. Each
resident furnished their own drink.
Hall 2 was in charge of the
entertainment for the affair. The
residents on hall 2 included Carene
Folden (hall monitor), Earl & Pauline
Walters, Helen Tucker, Darlene
Sage and our newest residents, Dale
& Mary Sexton. Hey, that Dale is
a good host. He was seen serving
desserts and picking up trash. We
need more go-getters like him at
Sunnyview.
Hall 2 had intended to have their
entertainment in May but at the time
the Sextons were not moved in yet
and Pauline Walters had surgery so
the date was changed to June. Hall
5 with Ted Stacy as hall monitor
had to be postponed from June until
a later date, due to the Big Lounge
being remodeled and not finished as
yet. Perhaps we will be able to have
two activities planned for July as Sid
Sidmore (hall monitor of hall 4) is
planning a pizza party for July also.
Thank you to all the willing workers
at these activities. It is always nice
to have get-togethers and enjoy each
other’s company.”
Interestingly, the concert at
Sunnyview was not the only
outdoor event on that Tuesday
evening. Someone mentioned that
they had heard music coming from
the direction of Lynch’s on the
square, too, and that a big group had
gathered out back in the outdoor
seating area to enjoy some tunes. Do
you suppose that all of this outdoor
music was a celebration of summer
– the calendar says that it officially
started on Wednesday, June 20.
Happy summer!
More money has been coming in
for the 14 trees that were planted on
June 14. This looks like a positive
addition to the Sunnyview grounds
– a big plus. Thank you to everyone
who has been contributing.
SUNNY
KNOLL
This past week at Sunny Knoll
we spent Monday playing bingo
and treating the residents with spa
day in the afternoon. Tuesday we
spent the morning outside in the
gazebo. Even though it as very warm
Tuesday the breeze was just right in
the shade! We had a wonderful time
enjoying the weather and visiting.
Tuesday afternoon the kitchen made
banana bars we enjoyed at Tunes
and Treats. Wednesday we had
devotions in the morning and bible
study in the afternoon. Thursday we
decided to do a little gambling while
playing horse race and winning
candy prizes. The residents really
enjoy this game so we plan to play
it again in the near future! Thursday
afternoon we were entertained by BJ
Ukena as we sang some oldies but
goodies. After singing we enjoyed
some birthday cake Merle Stouts
family shared with everyone for his
Birthday. Friday the men enjoyed
coffee and snicker doodle cookies
in the morning. Friday afternoon
we had ice cream social to kick off
the weekend. We hope everyone is
enjoying this beautiful summer!
On Tuesday, June 13 the museum
hosted a group from the Howard
New Business, Weston Thompson
brought up that the drain pipe on the
west side has to be drained out into
the street as it is eroding the ground
by the side walk and the steps to the
north. Swanson’s Hardware has a
tool that we can rent to do this job.
There are a group of little children
from a day care that would like to
come tour the museum, they are
from 5 to 10 years of age, so they
will find a time for them to come.
The meeting was adjourned.
Some interesting events that have
happened when people sit. There
was a group of 5 from New York
that toured, they had come out to
see some of their relation and the
dad had gone to school here in the
old elementary school. They were
amazed at all the things they had
here and even found a picture of
one of their relation in the Rockwell
City room, bought several books and
things from the gift shop.
Also, one day two little boys
came in with some rail road spikes,
they had been out riding on the old
railroad and found them an asked us
if we could use them and if we had
a rail road room, they went through
the museum and was very nice, even
gave a donation. We need more little
children to go through.
JoAnn Maguire has been a very
good worker in the library, sorting
out books and making more room.
She wants to remind everyone
that there are a lot of OLD books
still for sale. Most all duplicates
needing a new home. As an example
Zane Greg, Tarkington, Almanacs,
National Geographics and other
authors.
So stop in and something might be
of interest to you.
The Depot people have a lot of
events going on this summer and we
added a new one.
We found the old freight building
and want to bring it back where it
belongs. The building is in good
shape but it will cost a little (lot)
more than we thought. In other
words, we need money to get it back
to its original location and we can
get it looking as nice as the Depot.
Our soup suppers went to fix and
paint the train which is coming along
great.
Stewart Memorial Community Hospital
Employees Donate to American Cancer Society
In a troubled economy, employees
at Stewart Memorial Community
Hospital (SMCH) have found
increasingly innovative ways to
raise funds for Relay for Life. As a
result, SMCH’s employee team was
able to top previous years’ donations
to help fight cancer.
In addition to team t-shirt sales,
the hospital team held a variety of
different fundraisers throughout
the year to raise money including
selling homemade Jane Johnson
Apple Bars, homemade Donna
Westcott Cinnamon Rolls and
cookies baked by the SMCH Dietary
department. They also hosted
contests including a soup cook off,
a Super Salad Showdown, and a
traveling Christmas Grinch during
which departments pooled funds in
order for the Grinch to be housed in
another competing department.
The check for $1,800 was
presented to the American Cancer
Society by members of SMCH’s
employee team at the 2012 Relay
for Life, held on June 15. Plans have
already begun for the 2013 Relay
for Life in hopes of increasing the
donation amount.
Informational Workshop
Offered in Sac County on
July 30 at 1:30 p.m.
More than half of Iowa farmland
is rented. In some Iowa locations,
as much as 70 percent of the land is
farmed by farmers who don’t own
the land.
Iowa farmland values increased by
as much as 35 percent during 2011.
Farmland cash rental rates Iowa
increased for the 2012 crop year by
nearly 20 percent over 2011 – and up
to 55 percent over the past five years.
These are just a few reasons why
Iowa State University Extension and
Outreach offers workshops designed
to answer questions that land owners
and tenants have about farmland
leasing and land values.
A workshop will be held at Sac
County Extension and Outreach
office Monday,
July 30, at 1:30 p.m. The address
is 620 Park Avenue in Sac City. Call
712/662-7131 to sign up.
Melissa O’Rourke, ISU Extension
Farm & Agribusiness Management
Specialist will present information
about a wide range of topics related
to farmland values and leasing.
O’Rourke is a licensed attorney
with extensive experience in working
with farm, ranch and agribusiness
interests.
In several counties – Ida,
Carroll, Crawford, Monona and
Sac – workshop presentations will
include Shane Ellis, a new Farm
& Agribusiness Management
Specialist for ISU Extension based
in Carroll.
Trends in Farmland Leasing
“I’ve had numerous contacts
this year from persons who have
questions about farmland values and
rental rates,” says O’Rourke.
“Due to the increases in land values
and cash rents, there is definitely a
heightened interest in farm leasing
arrangements,” O’Rourke noted.
“We expect significant attendance at
these meetings.”
O’Rourke noted several other
trends in farmland ownership and
leasing.
“Due to the volatility of land and
commodity markets, we have seen
had increased inquiries regarding
flexible cash lease methodologies.
For this reason, our 2012 workshops
will have more focus on these
kinds of arrangements. We will
work through examples of various
strategies for flexible cash leases.”
Another area O’Rourke noted
is the increasing age of farmland
owners.
“ISU Extension research indicates
that the average age of farmland
owners continues to rise,” stated
O’Rourke. “Fifty-five percent of
Iowa’s farmland is owned by people
over the age of 65, while 28 percent
of the land is owned by individuals
over age 75. We also find that
children and surviving spouses of
farmers are less likely to continue
operating the farm themselves.
That’s a major reason why farmland
leasing continues to increase.”
O’Rourke explained that
workshop attendees will receive a
comprehensive workbook packed
with information about land values,
leasing and different types of farm
lease arrangements. “Everyone
should leave with a heightened
understanding of farmland leasing.”
Registration Information
A registration fee of $20 per
person is charged to cover costs
and includes a 90-page workbook.
Please pre-register by calling Sac
County Extension and Outreach at
712/662-7131 prior to the meeting.
Walk-ins may attend for a $25 fee at
the door.
More information about this and
