Thursday 3 November: “Europa literarisch” Ireland from 18.00 to 20.45

The “Europa literarisch” series continues in November with literature from Ireland. The guest
is Irish author Julian Gough who will read from his latest novel Jude in London (2011, Old
Street Publishing).
The novel is a comic epic for anyone who loves Roddy Doyle, PG Wodehouse, Samuel
Beckett and Kafka, but wishes their books had more explosions. Jude is a penniless Irish
orphan, fighting blizzards, bankers and the laws of physics as he walks the length of
England. He has not one, but two, Quests: to find his True Love and to uncover the Secret of
his Origins.
Julian Gough was born in London, grew up in Ireland and lives in Berlin. His first novel “Juno
and Juliet” was published in 2001. The prologue to his novel “Jude: Level 1”, a story called
"The Orphan and the Mob" won the 2007 BBC Short Story Prize. “Jude in London” is the
second part of a planned trilogy of novels.
The evening will be moderated by Dr. Thomas Wohlfahrt, Director of the Literaturwerkstatt
Berlin and is hosted in cooperation with the European Commission.

Thursday 10 November: Patricia Lambert Exhibition Field Waves
The Embassy of Ireland is delighted to
host an exhibition Field Waves by
Tipperary-born artist Patricia Lambert.
“Field Waves”, her first exhibition in
Germany, features paintings which are
essentially landscapes. They show the
physical relics of the engagement which
has taken place on the land, and which
remain long after man and machine
activity subsides.
Lambert, who is based in Galway, won the Royal Hibernian Academy Oriel Gallery
“Landscape of Distinction” Award in 2010 and the Axa Insurance “Drawing” Award in 2007.
A preview hosted by Ambassador Mulhall, with the artist in attendance, will take place in the
Embassy from 18.30 to 20.30 on Thursday 10 November. Please register at

From 10 November to 22 December the exhibition can be viewed at the Embassy from
Monday to Friday, 14:30-17:00.
The Life and Works of WB Yeats
The exhibition on the life and works of WB Yeats, which premiered in
Berlin on St. Patrick‟s day, is continuing its tour throughout Germany.
On 30 November the exhibition will be opened by Ambassador Mulhall
at the Universität des Saarlands where it will be displayed in the
Campus Centre (Gebäude A 4.4), D-66123 Saarbrücken until the end
of the year.
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) is Ireland‟s most famous poet and
one of the most significant poets of the nineteenth and twentieth
century. He lived through a period which saw the revival of Irish culture, the struggle for
independence and the establishment of the Irish State. The exhibition celebrates his life, his
works and his contribution to the great debates of his age.

Thursday 17 November: Book Launch – Anne Enright “Anatomie einer Affäre”
The Embassy of Ireland is pleased to host the Berlin launch of the German translation of
Anne Enright‟s “The Forgotten Waltz”
A brief moment, an exchange of glances at a garden party, and
already the foundation stone for a stormy affair is laid. But what
happens when this results in the break-up of two marriages and the
secret love becomes routine?
Anne Enright is known for the ruthless implacability with which she
dissects relationships. All it takes is a gesture, a look, a comment on
the furnishing in a dreary hotel room, and it is clear that the lovers
are heading for the abyss of everyday normality. ‘The Forgotten
Waltz’ is a worthy successor to the award-winning novel ‘The
Gathering’: shockingly open, subtle and so psychologically precise
that escape is impossible.
One of Ireland‟s leading contemporary authors, Anne Enright was born in Dublin and now
lives in Bray, Co. Wicklow. Her last novel “The Gathering” won many accolades including the
Irish Novel of the Year, the Irish Fiction Award and the 2007 Man Booker Prize.
The launch, which will include readings in both English and German by the author and
translator (Hans Christian Oeser), and a discussion, will take place at the Embassy on
Thursday 17 November from 19.30 -21.30.

The Irish Folk Festival 2011 – Affairs of the Heart
Irish poet, artist and filmmaker Michael
O„Sullivan will present a selection of his
award- winning poems on Sunday 20

will be in English and O‟Sullivan will also

This year‟s Irish Folk Festival is underway and will run
until 18 November. Entitled “Affairs of the Heart” it will
include major Irish acts such as Altan, Réalta and the
Outside Track. This year‟s tour also features Ireland‟s
last traditional matchmaker Willie Daly. The Festival,
which is supported by Culture Ireland, will tour a number

Ireland’s road to economic recovery.
Some Highlights, 16-31 October 2011
On 20 October, the European Commission, ECB and the IMF completed the latest quarterly
review of Ireland‟s programme. It concluded that Ireland‟s fiscal deficit limit for 2011 „is
expected to be met and important structural reforms are being put in place.‟ The Troika
press release continued: „In a welcome sign of Ireland‟s strengthened competitiveness,
economic growth in the first quarter of 2011 was higher than expected.‟ The Troika added,
however, that the slowdown in key trading partners may cool Ireland‟s export growth and
that real GDP growth for this year is likely to be about 1%.
On Ireland‟s financial sector, the Troika found that „Recapitalisation of the banking sector
has been completed at a lower than expected cost‟. www.imf.org
The statement of Euro Zone Summit of 26 October said that „we are pleased with the
progress made by Ireland in the full implementation of its adjustment programme which is
delivering positive results.‟ www.european-council.europa.eu
The IMF‟s Chief Economist, Olivier Blanchard, said on 27 October that he is: „fairly confident‟
Ireland should be able, in late 2012 or early 2013, to resume market borrowing „with
relatively small spreads‟. www.irishtimes.com
Ireland‟s Central Statistics Office reported that exports increased by 10% in August 2011,
which resulted in a 15% increase in Ireland‟s monthly trade surplus. Ireland‟s exports to
Germany reached Euro 3.8 billion in January-July 2011, an increase of almost 10% over the
same period in 2010. At the same time, Germany‟s exports to Ireland rose by more than

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan said in a speech delivered on 27 October that „our
balance of payments with the rest of the world moved into surplus last year, the first time in
over a decade. This means that the nation as a whole is able to finance itself, which is an
undoubted strength.‟ He went on to stress that Ireland has laid „the foundations for a
continuation of export-led growth‟ with:
A very open economy, with exports equal to more than 100% of GDP;
A flexible, dynamic English-speaking work force;
Favourable demographics; and
A vibrant, high technology export base.
The Minister acknowledged that there are significant challenges ahead for Ireland and said
that „difficult but necessary changes will be made in order to help drive Ireland‟s economy
