Istochnikov. In 1998, fontcuberta purports that <strong>the</strong> Sputnik foundation sponsored<br />

an extensive, researched installation which examined <strong>the</strong> artifacts, details<br />

and life of <strong>the</strong> Soviet cosmonaut, Istochnikov who had apparently disappeared<br />

during <strong>the</strong> fght of Soyuz 2 in 1968. <strong>the</strong> reality, however, was that fontcuberta<br />

had created an entirely fctitious narrative that refected his actual research of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Soviet culture and its space program. fontcuberta’s portraits of Istochnikov<br />

are, in fact, those of fontcuberta himself. <strong>the</strong> artist also created a series of
