Soviet union had sent men and a woman into space, those individuals were<br />

forever bound to <strong>the</strong> Soviet ideology of <strong>the</strong> 1960s. For that reason, <strong>the</strong> post-<br />

Soviet reassessment of <strong>the</strong> early years of human spacefight paid close attention<br />

to <strong>the</strong> cosmonaut’s relationship with <strong>the</strong> state. One consequence was that <strong>the</strong>se<br />

flms extricated spacefight and cosmonauts from <strong>the</strong>ir ideological burden<br />

by passing <strong>the</strong> judgment that what might have held cosmonauts back from<br />

fulflling <strong>the</strong> spacefight dreams of <strong>the</strong> 1920s. according to <strong>the</strong>se directors, it<br />

had been ideology and not technology. as tsiolkovskii had predicted, humans<br />

had emerged from <strong>the</strong> cradle of earth, but it was from <strong>the</strong> gravesite of <strong>the</strong><br />

Soviet union that cosmonauts gained <strong>the</strong>ir freedom from ideological burdens.
