Flag Etiquette<br />
When the National Anthem is played …<br />
When the Flag passes on a parade or in review …<br />
When the Flag is hoisted or lowered …<br />
When the Pledge of Allegiance is recited …<br />
• Students, participants and spectators<br />
•<br />
should be reminded that when the National Anthem<br />
is played, they should stand at attention, face the<br />
fl ag, and place their right hand over their heart.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Flag, if visible, is faced and saluted; if not visible, face music and salute; if music is recorded,<br />
face front and salute.<br />
• Salute is rendered at fi rst note of music and held until the last note.<br />
• When in civilian attire:<br />
��Men should remove their hat and hold it at left shoulder with right hand over heart; if they<br />
are without a hat they should place their right hand (palm open) over their heart.<br />
��Women should place their right hand (palm open) over their heart.<br />
• When in performance attire (and not performing) students should face the fl ag or music, remove<br />
their headdress if any and stand at attention.<br />
• When fl ag is passing in review, a salute is rendered when the fl ag is six paces from the viewer<br />
and held until it has passed six paces beyond.
