Eight different types of non-living resource are assessed. These all<br />

occur on the seafloor. Table 10 gives a summary of these resources, their<br />

quantity, and estimated value (exclusive of recovery and production costs) for<br />

the nation states that have potential claim to ELCS regions.<br />

Placer deposits comprising heavy minerals, gold and diamonds are<br />

limited to near-shore areas and have negligible resource potential in the ELCS<br />

regions. Similarly, phosphorites occur in the equatorial oceans, mainly<br />

between 400 m and 1,500 m depth, but have limited resource potential in<br />

ELCS areas. Evaporite deposits occur on many continental margins. However,<br />

they only overlap with ELCS regions off eastern North America and western<br />

central Africa, where their resource potential is low. Polymetalic sulphides<br />

(PMS) are formed at active plate boundaries. With the exception of the West<br />

Pacific and off the western coast of North America, PMS resources are low in<br />

the ELCS regions.<br />

The major resource potential within the ELCS regions is held in ironmanganese<br />

nodules and crusts, oil, gas and gas hydrates. Four elemental<br />

metals are the main components of value in manganese nodules and crusts:<br />

manganese, copper, nickel and cobalt. World-wide, the total value of these<br />

metals within the ELCS regions is: US$ 4,534,487 millions of manganese; US$<br />

196,677 millions of copper; US$ 1,131,278 millions of nickel, and US$ 690<br />

millions of cobalt. Conventional oil and gas comprise an estimated US$<br />

2,984,800 millions with a similar estimated value of US$ 3,085,600 millions for<br />

gas hydrates. In total, the resource potential (excluding recovery and<br />

production costs) contained within the ELCS regions of the world amounts to<br />

an estimated US$ 11, 934 trillions.<br />
