on the deep-seafloor. Apart from manganese and iron oxide, nickel,<br />

copper and cobalt, the nodules and crusts include trace amounts of<br />

molybdenum, platinum and other base metals (Cronan, 1980; Manheim,<br />

1986).<br />

Manganese nodules were first dredged by the HMS Challenger<br />

Expedition in the Pacific Ocean in 1872-76 (Murray, 1878; Murray and<br />

Irvine, 1895; Murray and Renard, 1891). The currently known distribution<br />

of manganese nodules and crusts on the ocean floor (shown on Figure 11)<br />

is based on information acquired by sidescan sonars, drill cores, dredged<br />

samples, seafloor photos, video camera records and direct observation<br />

from submersibles.<br />
