2 Physiography of the Ocean Floor and its Bearing on Non-Living Resources In order to apply the criteria defined by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Article 76, to identify those areas of the global oceans that lie beyond 200 nautical miles of coastal baselines, it is necessary to consider the regional geology and physiography of the seafloor. This is essential before considering the potential for, and occurrence of, non-living resources forming in or on the deep seafloor. Figures 1 to 5 respectively are preliminary maps showing the age, physiography, tectonic boundaries, sub-division of basement types, and sediment thickness underlying the global oceans and their continental margins.
