A quick guide to Cottingham and its surroundings

welcome to cottingham
A warm welcome to our village, here on the Leicestershire/Northamptonshire
border and in the heart of the Welland Valley.
We’ve produced this pack to help you find your way around the village and the
local area in general, and hopefully help you make lots of new friends along the
way.
We know how daunting it can be moving into a new home so hopefully the information
in this pack will give you a few pointers to local amenities and places
of interest, along with a few useful contact numbers.
village life
Moving into a new village can be
a little unsettling at first – you
probably don’t know anyone,
you’re not sure where anything is
and there are things you must get
sorted but you don’t know who
to call.
Well, the great thing about
Cottingham and Middleton is that
there are plenty of people around
who’ll be more than happy to give
you a hand and help you out.
One thing you’ll discover very
quickly is just how easy it is to get
involved with village life.
There’s lots of stuff going on
for all ages, from Mums and
Tots, monthly drinking clubs
and annual events to Over 60s
clubs, Village Quizzes and Church
Groups.
There’s a full list of clubs and
groups elsewhere in this pack and
if you need any more information,
just give the contact number a
call.
page 2
Coming along to these events
is a great way to meet your
neighbours and strike up new
friendships. Many of these events
are held on a regular basis so if
you miss one, there’s also a chance
to catch up at the next one.
For example, every month at
‘Ramblers’ the guys from the two
villages meet up at someone’s
house for a night of beer and
curry, while the girls hold their
‘Sweets’ get togethers the next
day so babysitting duties are
equally split.
(There’s no real reason why
there’s a male/female split – it just
worked out that way over the past
10 years!)
There’s also the ‘Desperate
Housewives’ club which meets
every two months and the annual
Wine Safari where villagers are
invited to half a dozen homes
around the villages to take a glass
of wine and raise money for the
Church and School.
But it’s not all about socialising
with a glass in your hand – there
are plenty of opportunities
to meet up and get involved
throughout the year, through
school fayres, church meetings
and a whole host of sports and
social events down at the Village
Hall Annex.
You can keep track of what’s
going on in the villages by taking
a look at the Village Newsletter
(published every two months),
the village website at www.
cottinghamnews.co.uk and
www.middletonnews.co.uk, or
the ‘Down Your Way’ column
in the Saturday Corby Evening
Telegraph.
But the best way is to just go out
and get yourself involved.

history
There has been a settlement around Cottingham and neighbouring
Middleton since the Iron Age. The first mention of a village called
‘Cotingeham’ comes in the Domesday Book as part of land owned by
Peterborough Abbey. There’s no mention of Middleton at the time of
the Domesday survey, although the village can be traced back to the
late 12th Century.
The name ‘Cottingham’ comes from the Anglo Saxon words ‘Cotta’, or
‘Cotti’, meaning ‘chief’, ‘ing’ denoting a tribal leader’s son and ‘ham’
meaning a settlement.
The village lies within Rockingham Forest, created by William 1 in the
11th Century, and sits under the watchful eye of nearby Rockingham
Castle, which you can easily see by taking a walk or driving up
Rockingham Road.
Since those days, Cottingham has geographically been part of
Northamptonshire – first as one of 29 regional ‘Hundreds’ and later as
part of Kettering Rural District – although our postal address has been
Market Harborough, Leicestershire, since the early 1900s.
You can find out more about the history of Cottingham on villager Jane
Smith’s excellent website at www.cottinghamhistory.co.uk, from where
the information for this section has been taken.
If you’d like to explore your new village, the best way would be
to head down to St Mary Magdalene Church (1) at the end of,
appropriately enough, Church Street.
The Church dates from the 13th Century, although most of what we see
now was added in the 14th and 15th Centuries, and underwent a major
restoration in the mid-1800s.
Behind the Church looking south is the 11-acre Dale (2), a ‘Pocket Park’
owned and maintained by Cottingham Parish Council for recreational
use by all of our villagers and also used annually for grazing land.
To the right of the kissing gate is a footpath that leads behind
Cottingham and along into Middleton, coming out just before The Hill
in Middleton.
If you walk back up to the crossroads at the end of Church Street, you’ll
see one of Cottingham’s two surviving pubs, The Spread Eagle (3), to
your left and the newly refurbished village shop and coffee house on
the corner to your right.

cottinghamparishcouncil
If you look up Corby Road, you might catch a glimpse of Cottingham’s
oldest pub, The Royal George (4), which you can get to from Blind Lane
or through the rear entrance on the path behind the bus shelter on
Corby Road.
Opposite the path on the right hand side of Corby Road is the 19th
Century Methodist Church and Hall (5) which holds its services every
week, as well as hosting a wide range of events during the year.
Back on High Street and further down on the left is The Hunting Lodge
(6), a hotel and restaurant originally built in the grounds of the Bury
House (7), the grand 17th Century manor house you can see behind the
ornate railings which is still in private ownership.
Walking down to the end of High Street, you’ll see Cottingham
Church of England Primary School (8) which was built in the 1960s and
serves pupils aged between 4 and 11 from the two villages and the
surrounding area.
The school feeds into the nearby secondary facility at Kingswood School
in Corby and has a very active weekly Youth Club run by local villagers.
It also holds its annual School Fete, along with a few other events
throughout the year, on the recreation field behind the building.
Attached to the school is the Cottingham-cum-Middleton Village
Hall, known as the Annex, which also has an active calendar of events
that includes dances, discos, whist drives and keep fit classes. Both
Cottingham and Middleton hold their separate monthly Parish Council
meetings here, which everyone is welcome to attend.
pubs, hotels and b&bs
page 6
The two main pubs in Cottingham are The Royal George and The Spread Eagle, and
both offer a variety of beers, real ales, wines and food. The Hunting Lodge Hotel
has a bar, a restaurant and offers wedding venue and conference facilities
The ‘George’ is one of the oldest buildings in the village. The bottom lounge was
erected in 1261 as a farmhouse and the building became a pub in 1780, the same
time the Royal George flagship was commissioned.
The ‘Spread’ (right) was originally a thatched
cottage and has been around since at least
1854. The current pub was built in the
1960s behind the original pub, which was
subsequently demolished.
The Hunting Lodge (below) was formerly the stables and outbuildings
for Bury House. In the 1960s/70s the Hunting Lodge was a casino, and
also at one time had a grand ballroom.
cottingham parish council
welcomepack
Cottingham Parish Council has been serving the villagers of Cottingham since the late 19th Century.
Our first Chairman, Cllr W Yates, took up the role in 1894 shortly after the Parish Council’s formation under
the Local Government Act, which was one of the last pieces of legislation to be passed by Prime Minister
William Gladstone.
Since then, some 16 Chairmen
and Chairwomen, along with six
Parish Clerks, have been working
with councillors elected or coopted
from around Cottingham
to ensure that the village’s rural
and forward thinking nature
is preserved for generations to
come.
Meetings are generally held at
7.30pm in the Village Hall Annex
at the back of the school on the
first Wednesday of each month,
except for a break in August when
there is no meeting.
